Go ahead and get you a notebook, pen and pad, or your notes app on your phone, something because we are about to dive into it.
First things first, what I always like to do is let you know what a medical courier is. To my people that are not new to the channel, be patient with us, okay? But this is for the people that don't. A lot of people confuse being a medical courier with working in a hospital or needing a medical background, and that is not what it is. You do not need it. Basically, a medical courier is a driver who transports sensitive medical items to and from facilities, hospitals, labs, clinics, pharmacies, you name it. Warehouses. You are essentially the logistics link between the healthcare system. And because healthcare never stops, nights, weekends, holidays, the demand for reliable drivers is consistent. That's why I tell people it doesn't matter how oversaturated you think the market is. It doesn't matter about how many people want to get into this type of work. Don't feel like you have to gatekeep the information because there is so much room for growth. There is so much room for more drivers. The medical system, the healthcare system is going to continue to grow.
Now, just a few things that you can expect to be transporting for my people that just want a heads-up of what's going to be in your vehicle. Lab specimens, prescription medications, medical equipment and supplies, so the tools that you see being used during surgery or at your doctor's appointments, those are some of the things that you would be transporting from one place to another. Pathology samples and biopsies, medical records, COVID tests, diagnostic samples, and even organ transporting. And the best part about it is that these items are sealed very specially to make sure that they get from one place to the next safely. So, you typically don't have to worry about anything wasting in your car. As long as you follow the instructions to the T, you will be fine.
Hey, y'all. I just wanted to slide in here really quick with a little reminder. Always check the description of the video because I have tons of surprises down in the description, helpful resources, as well as the link to my "Become a Medical Courier" course. All right. So, for my people that are really ready to start their medical courier journey, then the course is for you, okay? Or even if you just feel like you need a little bit more help and guidance, and you want everything in front of you, you'll find what you need in the description below to sign up for the course, okay? Okay.
Now, let's go over requirements. There's always so much fuss in the comments about requirements. We get a bunch of know-it-alls thinking they just know everything. So, let's talk about it. And the truth is this is simpler than most people think. The basics that most clients require is a valid driver's license and clean driving record. Now, let's get into clean driving records. Your record does not have to be perfect. That's not what I mean when I say a clean driving record. It just can't be anything too, too out of there, you know what I'm saying? Like, you can have some traffic violations, you can have some at-fault accidents. All those things are fine. However, if you're having this happen every month, every week, you're not a good candidate. If you have a bunch of DUIs and DWIs, and they're really recent, then that's going to be another issue. If you have one in the past, depending on how long ago it was, you may be fine when it comes to the DUI and the DWI.
I often get asked about if you need a clean criminal background. No, you don't need a clean criminal background, but it also just depends on the contract. It depends on the company. Every company is different, and it also depends on what your charge was. If your charge was stealing pharmaceuticals, then you probably won't get the job. You probably won't get that contract. But, you know, if it was something else, it was a little while ago, you should be fine. They just want somebody that's trustworthy and responsible at the end of the day. But there's a lot of companies that will give you a second chance.
Next thing you're going to need, which should be a no-brainer, but I want to say it anyway, a clean, reliable vehicle. Heavy emphasis on clean. People like to skip that part. Keep it clean. That's like your vehicle is your office when you're doing this type of work. Nobody wants to see your office being nasty, especially not when you're dealing with delivering these type of sensitive items. You definitely need a smartphone, okay? A phone that works and a phone that is charged at all times. Your little flip phone, I love flip phones, but it's not going to work for this type of career or gig cuz some people don't want this as their career, it's just a side hustle. Whatever it is you're trying to do, if you want to be a medical courier and run it up, you need a good phone. It can be an Android. It can be an Apple phone, but it needs to be in good condition. It has to be a smartphone. And then you're going to need auto insurance. Always see so many people arguing about auto insurance. Commercial insurance is not always required. For my people that have taken my "Become a Medical Courier" course, in that course, I talk about insurance. Not only do I talk about insurance, but I show contracts that are currently available that I have not mentioned on YouTube. And on some of those contracts, you're going to see that majority of them are not requiring you to have commercial auto insurance. But every contract will be different. Every company is different. So, once you figure out which contract you are going to secure, then you'll see what their requirements are.
Now, let's talk about credentials and certifications. HIPAA certification. A lot of people like to go back and forth about this, and the process is different with every company. Some companies will provide the HIPAA training for you or give you a third party that they recommend you use for the certification. Some of them don't mention it at all. And then there's others that want you to be HIPAA certified already. It is different with every company. So, go on the website or go look at the contract first and see what their requirements are. This is not a one-size-fits-all type of situation. Same thing with the OSHA and the bloodborne pathogens. Case-by-case basis. I don't recommend going and running to get all of these things if you're just getting started as a medical courier. And then Hazmat Awareness Training is another one. Good to have, but most of these contracts don't require it. And something else that I want to mention is that all of the certifications that we're discussing are extremely affordable. You can often get them for about $20 to $25 a pop. Um, so, they're really affordable, but like I said, every contract is different. They do not all have the same requirements. Some require certifications, others don't, and then there are some companies that have their own process that they put you through for the certifications. So, it is a case-by-case basis. Please keep that in mind.
Also, take all information that you receive with a grain of salt. I often see people dropping in the comments sharing their experience, and I like when people share their experience. However, there's some people that drop in the comments, and they're telling you, "Oh, you have to do this. You're not going to get a contract if you don't get this contract, this certification, and that certification." And it's just certainly not true. It's just not.
Also, the DOT medical card. Now, this is one that often you would see um if you are drive, if you are using a vehicle that is over 10,000 lb or crossing state lines commercially. So, this is not required for most local couriers. Hazmat Awareness Training. This one is really useful for dry ice shipments and certain specimen types. So, once again, case-by-case basis.
Now, if you just absolutely want to start with some certifications under your belt because you, you want to show up like, you know what? I'm, I'm a pro. I've already been doing this. I have X, Y, and Z. I would recommend HIPAA certification and OSHA because those are universal and they will be useful no matter what contract you get. They will be useful even if the company does not require it. All right.
Now, let's talk about where to find clients and contracts. This is going to be one of the most important steps to making over $3,500 per week, okay? You need the clients. You need the contracts in order to run this money up. So, many people that are saying, "Oh, I tried to do this or I looked it up. It's no money." Babes, you're doing it all wrong. You're looking at the wrong contracts. Or you're strictly relying on an app. Okay? Or you're not stacking contracts. There's something going wrong in there, but let's get to it.
So, first things first, medical courier companies. This is one of the quickest ways to get started. These are companies that already have healthcare contracts and hire independent contractors. Just to name a few, we have Courier Connection, OnTrack Medical, Labcorp Courier Network. Labcorp uses independent drivers nationwide. Quest Diagnostics, same model but massive reach. Dropoff, Hitch Health, Circuit Medical Couriers, and Veyo. And they, and Veyo focuses on non-emergency medical transport. So, you want to sign up as an IC, which is an independent contractor, with two or three of these companies. It's one of the fastest ways to start landing contracts. All right.
Now, let's talk about direct contracts, okay? Direct contracts is bread and butter. So, with direct contracts, you're going straight to the source. All right. Now, let's talk about who to approach. Independent medical labs and pathology centers, private physician offices and group practices, urgent care chains, fertility clinics, dental offices that send impressions and molds off, home health agencies, hospice organizations, and even mental health facilities. And there's many more, but this is a nice list to start with. Once you get in and land that first contract, you want to start stacking contracts, okay? Very strategically. So, focusing on morning routes, evening routes. That's how you're able to run it up significantly. Route stacking and contract stacking is something that I go more in-depth about in my "Become a Medical Courier" course, okay? I have students that have tripled their income since completing the course. So, if you ever feel like you've watched tons of videos all on YouTube, you've done tons of research, and you're lost or your earnings are not adding up, it could just be that you are the type of learner that needs everything in front of you step-by-step. And if that's you, the course is perfect. Also, within that course, I have contracts listed that some of which I have not mentioned on YouTube, all right? So, if you're serious about starting your journey as a medical courier or even increasing your income as a courier, let's say you've already been doing it, but you're, you want more money. You're ready to really run a serious bag, the link will be down in the description of this video.
Now, I want to go over a few tips to really make you stand out, but to also increase the likelihood of you being one of the top-paid medical couriers. Number one, never miss a pickup window. In healthcare, timing is everything. Number two, communicate proactively. If you're running a few minutes late, call ahead of time. Let them know. Communicate. Healthcare facilities love reliability. Number three, look professional. And looking professional starts at your vehicle because guess what? When you pull up anywhere, people see your vehicle before they see you. So, make sure that you're keeping your car clean, your clothes clean. Have a professional demeanor about yourself. Stand up straight. Walk with your head high. Make sure your clothes are neat and that you're not looking dingy. And something that I want to mention about looking professional because I had someone in the comments one day say, "Oh, yeah, you're talking about look professional and you have on makeup and you have tattoos." So, let's talk about it. First of all, you can have tattoos. It's okay. And as far as makeup goes, I'm not going to lie. I don't know what is wrong with y'all. There's nothing wrong with wearing makeup. In fact, wearing makeup can be considered professional in many cases. Some people, it's better that you do put on a little makeup, put a little something on that eye, on that lip, under that eye.
So, the next tip is ask for referrals. A lab manager who knows you and loves you most likely knows three other facilities that need a reliable medical courier. And keep in mind, networking can take you very far. So, if you build up a nice reputation for yourself, even with just one company, you'll be surprised how they recommend you to their fellow colleagues or other people that they know in the medical industry that need couriers. So, just make sure that you are respectful to everybody because you never know who you're talking to and who has those connections to be able to get you more contracts. All right.
And the last tip that I want to mention, as I've mentioned so many times before, is don't rely on one client. Do not put all your eggs in one basket. You want to have multiple contracts. That way, if you ever lose one, because this can happen, and it doesn't always mean that you did something wrong, they could be scaling down. It's just tons of reasons why you may lose a contract. You'll have so many contracts stacked up and lined up that it won't affect That is the goal.
