The tenth house is the house of ambition, public image, authority, attainment, and vocation. The natural ruler of the 10th house is Saturn. It is a yin house, its element is earth, the modality is Cardinal, and the perspective is universal.
The tenth house represents our reaching for status and recognition, and tells the story of the type of impact we will make on the world around us and what we will leave behind that stands the test of time. We find the career described by the tenth house because it is part of what makes up our reputation and image, how we will define ourselves professionally.
We grow up from the fourth house of the past into the tenth house of the future. The seed that is planted and covered with soil in the fourth house germinates and grows toward the midday Sun and into maturity in the tenth house.
The tenth house is also where we find responsibilities. This house contains our experiences related to external security and the dominant parent who was the basis of our active participation in the outside world. Our attitudes regarding discipline and hard work are seen by analyzing planets in the tenth house.
The dominant parent was typically the original authority figure in our lives and molds our ideas and attitudes toward bosses, government, and enforcement of laws. If our experiences with the original authority in our lives was healthy, then we often will have a better chance of being successful because we can work well with others and are not likely to feel triggered by bosses, laws, expectations, limitations, or deadlines.
We are driven to explore the possibilities of accepting responsibility in our lives as furtherance toward our social and spiritual identity. This is a practical house. As such, it contains our experiences toward direction of our physical and mental energies. This house is where we build the forms and structure of our lives. The type of material success that can ensure our place at the adult's table is found in the tenth house.
Mastery, social power, and the prestige that comes with it are the currency we use to buy our privileged. Planets in the tenth house are used to discover one's social identity, our reputation. We employ the planets in the tenth house to bring us social power and attention.
The tenth house shows our personal integration into the larger social whole, our cog in the wheel of success. If we have failed to achieve social success, we may think of ourselves as powerless and incapable. If we do succeed at social success, we may see ourselves as powerful and competent.
The tenth house shows the extent of our cooperation with others in the pursuit of praise. Praise is something we are definitely seeking in the tenth house. We wish to become an autonomous self that fits into a greater whole and derives purpose from participating in society. The tenth house is the point of culmination of all our efforts.
The opposing fourth house contains experiences that provide a concrete basis for our personal power and references the past. It is the foundation for our tenth house experiences that define one's participation in the social whole. Our defined purpose is described by the tenth house, how we will attain external security, the type of exoskeleton that we arm ourselves with in order to remain safe in an unpredictable world.
The social power that we begin to attain in the ninth house crystallizes to become our social security in the tenth house, how we ensure our place in the world as a result of how we have risen to prominence and established ourselves as a functioning adult. The tenth house represents the stage of life when one has reached the culmination of one's efforts and distinguished oneself as a contributing member of society, ages 56 to 68.
