2017 Ford F350 6.7 Powerstroke p20EE Scr Nox Efficiency

So today's we have a 2017 Ford F-350 with the 6.7 liter Powerstroke. I have a Powerstroke, they're actually good engines, even though I make fun. But this one, we see it has 136,000 miles on it right now. We have a P20EE for the SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold.

Now, there is a technical service bulletin for this truck to reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration because, I guess, they just throw erroneous codes for this. But I've already done that. I gave it back to the customer, let him drive it because we get very short amount of time with these because it's a fleet truck. Light came back on, we got the same code. So that's great.

So now I want to show you something. This is one thing I always recommend to check on these trucks. Watch. Get all the pressure. Doesn't mean that the engine's blowing up. It just means that the crankcase filter is plugged up. And if it's puffing really bad, then you might have an engine issue if it's running like crap. But in this case, the crankcase filter is restricted. Okay, you can see I pushed the cap on. Now I lost the cap. But not only that, I'll show you guys in a little bit. The, it has a Champ air filter, which is aftermarket. The mass air is completely covered in dirt.

So for my first step, I've already looked over everything else. Everything else visually looks fine. There's nothing really going on. For the testing, this is what it tells you to do. Check everything. And the next step would be to check the injector after we get these two fixed. The DEF injector, check the flow rate of it. But we're going to stop with that. We're going to go with this and then see what happens. But I'll show you that mass air when I get it out because it's really, really, really bad. And that's why I do not like to run aftermarket air filters on these trucks. Always run a factory part. You know, factory fuel filter, factory oil filter, factory air filter, everything factory. You know, getting the belt, no. You know, certain things you don't have to. But for the filters, I always recommend factory. But let me get the authorization and then we'll go ahead and replace this stuff.

So we finally got the approval for the air cleaner and the crankcase filter. So I'm going to start off doing the air cleaner. Like I said, try to always use Ford stuff. That's the part number for this specific truck. You always want to make sure the part is correct for your truck because they do change.

Good shot. Okay, it's really easy changes. So we're just going to lift it up. I tried to disconnect the mass airflow sensor, but that was unsuccessful. So as you can see, this might be a little difficult to see. So this is, it's hard to see because of the glare, but it's just Champ. So I know it's made in America. It's supposed to be a good filter. I've had so many issues with this aftermarket filter. So that's why I prefer to run a factory. And our air box is clean inside. So we're clear to go ahead and stab another one. Motorcraft. And you can tell there's a visual difference right off the bat. It's not, it's not like it's the same filter. It is. People will say, oh, it's the same exact filter. It is absolutely not the same filter. Even in my personal vehicles, that's all I like to run is factory parts. Or, you know, like on the European cars, you run a high-quality German brand for like Gun filter. Don't cheap out on your filter. This one fits a little better too because I'm having a different time. Crush it. Careful putting your fingers in the middle of the filter because it's very sharp. Okay, so we've got two little. They just kind of sit. That's kind of not a very good sign. Yeah, be very careful to filter when you touch it because it, it's quite sharp in the center. Pop right down. Lock it down. There's four total tabs. There's one right there, one right there, one right there, and then there's one that's kind of a, not a pain, it's just in a rough spot right here. So we got all those four hooked up. Now we're going to move on to the rear and, uh, we're going to go ahead and get this mass air out.

So to show you how much dirt is going to be in this thing. And I know you're theoretically not supposed to clean a mass air. Only for testing. Clean more than I care to. Never had an issue with the mass air. It's so often on these trucks. See all the dirt right there? This is a layer of dirt in it. And I'm gonna be honest with you, it could have been the filter before. But I've had it where these filters, the aftermarket ones, they'll dust this mass airflow sensor out. Now I'm gonna go take it and clean it off camera just because it's where I'm going to clean. It's very loud, as you can tell. It's already louder. So I'll be right back. Hopefully you can see. I got it clean. Um, you're not, like I said, you're not supposed to clean them. I honestly clean them with brake clean, but just in this case, I use the mass air cleaner. So it's, you know, closer to being proper. But he's breaking and never ever had an issue. But, you know, there always is that one time where you have an issue. The thing that I will say, I always try to let the vehicle sit for a little bit before you do take it out because some of these, if they have a hot wire in them, they will get very hot. And let's say it's, you know, you just shut off, you pull it out, try to clean it, it may damage it because it's still that wire, allegedly, gets really, really hot. So I always let them sit, let them cool down, you know, just as a precautionary, you know, because I'm still doing something that's not ideal, but it works.

Away. Always this open end, obviously goes inlet. I didn't just clean the outside. To spray it really good. Drive. Blew it off. Make sure to make sure you don't want to put it in wet because the moisture in there can damage it. But hopefully that takes care of that. And you're gonna see when I go to reset everything, I'm going to do some extra steps just because we've had some issues with this truck. Because I've already reprogrammed the PCM for there was a TSB for this code and it said before I do anything else, as long as there's no other codes, reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration. And obviously we did that and that didn't help. So make sure you put it back on. It's locked. Everything's good. Nice and tight. Always make sure you reset the filter, the filter minder, and make sure that reset and good here now.

Now we're going to go over to the crankcase. We're going to start on that. And I think I've never done one of these newer ones. I think this one has a lid. So it should be, allegedly, it's a lot easier to do. And I sure hope so because the earlier ones are kind of a pain. So look at. Them. Look it up to write that up. And yeah, so let me find a good spot for the camera and then we'll get it taken apart.

One thing I did notice, I screwed up when I plugged this mass air in. The connector, the wiring was twisted. It probably wouldn't have been an issue, but it just kind of looks like crap. So always try to make sure you put it back on, you know, the right way. And like I just did, at least we saw it and fixed it. You know, so now we can get up here. I don't know if I'm gonna have a good place for this camera, but this is where the crankcase filter is. This is a lid. And then this is the new filter that we got. Again, another Ford part. An upside down one at that. Opened up upside down. You can see this one's just a molded rubber lid with our leaf valve and two filters. So we're gonna go ahead and knock this sucker out. Trying to find a good spot for the camera. I want you to be able to see a little bit. So sorry about the camera.

It's kind of a tight spot up here. Um, so I'm gonna clean it. The cleaning ain't probably gonna do crap for it, but I'm gonna try. Let me get. Not look bad. Just so when I open it up, I don't get crap inside the engine. I should probably grab a new can.

Okay, cool. Let's get it. It's gonna get. A pain. So hopefully you can kind of see there. Sorry for the quality, but it's gonna be a little tough to get in there and see. Um, and you should be careful because I just sprayed a bunch of brake clean in there and it is, uh, flammable. So you should be careful using electric tools.

Just make sure your tool doesn't back up into. I'm gonna have to pull this fuel line off. Back up into the firewall, the top of it. So we're gonna pull this fuel line off because I need to get one of the bolts underneath. All you do, let me show you again, you just take the, squeeze these two tabs together, push them down. You don't have to take the clip out. You just push it down. And hopefully she doesn't squirt on me. Perfect. So just leave it just like that. I don't have to get no crap in there. I don't. I'm not. I've never done one, so I don't know if we have to take the fuel filter out or not. Hoping not. It's not too hard to do. That's just more stuff that I have to do. There's one in there and we have this one. Yeah, let me get my short socket on there, ready.

And I'm gonna blow it off before I get in there. Okay, now we're back at it. We're gonna try to get these bolts. And I have to move this. I can't even see back there.

So we have this one right here. Probably could have got my electric ratchet. That's not a horrible design, but it's not that great of a design. I wish they didn't have so many screws in it, but, you know, it is what it is. They engineered it for a reason. I had to grab my fever. Actually, I don't like the one with the locker on it. So we're gonna go ahead and do this one back here. There's one right in the corner. And these are all eight millimeters. Oh, I'll see if I can get my hand back there and try to turn it a little bit. All right, you want to make sure it's all the way out. The bolts won't come out. They'll stay in there. They should at least. Yeah, so they should just lift that. Let me show you on this one. That's lifts up. Is that retained in there? So that's cool. Yeah, that's a nice thing to Ford people did. Um, I think there's only one more in the back. So, you know, this might not be as bad as I'm thinking. Just very tight back here. And I guess what's nice, if they still put the injector IQA codes on here, they won't be, you're not replacing the cover. So the IQA codes will still be up here. That's one that I did not like when I chose the crankcase filters is to lose the IQA codes. You know, if someone ever had a report on the PCM, then they're kind of screwed. It just makes, makes your life a lot difficult. Freezer. It makes life a lot more difficult. Let me get some brake clean. I got to clean my hands. So I'm gonna try to loosen that nut with my fingers now. There's a siren.

I have long ratchets for this, but that's not gonna fly. A quarter inch socket and stick it on it and then turn it with my hands. Okay, see if I can get my. I got big claws, so it's probably having big hands. You guys are little hands, you guys are must be loving it. It's everything now. It's kind of crammed, especially. Okay, so I have one trick. I'm gonna start doing this when there's not enough tension on the bolt or the dot, I should say, the fastener to pull the ratchet back. Um, I'm gonna take a pick, sticking on the head of it, I'm gonna pry the head of it down, put some pressure on it. Kind of a little tight in here to do that, but, you know, who is it? It works for a couple times. It should be looser now. Because I'm putting pressure on the cover, I'm able to do it right now. I'm not putting any pressure. That's a little tedious. I think that's still so far. I'd rather do this one than the older style. Yeah, I think I got it. Let's use my left hand on it. Just trade off hands if you get tired. You know, um, so like I said, first time fighting this, so we're gonna, we're gonna learn together today. There's one of us all the way out. That one slide right out that side. Okay. And here's our filter. Hopefully they gave us enough room. Oh, look at Ford. Thank you, Ford. Okay, now let me wash my hands and try to clean them before we get that on. Let me wipe this up. You don't want to wipe the inside of the cover with one of these rags because it'll leave crap in there, the lint, it'll get stuck in things. So I'm just wiping the mating surface down so when I put this new filter in, it's nice and clean. Nice and clean. So no problems. No. Okay, look at that. Okay, let me dispose of that. We're gonna go ahead and wipe the bottom of the cover, the lid, I should say. Wipe the inside. We're not wiping the, the whole thing, just where the mating surface is because if you look at the new filters, see the rubber on it? They have this on the top and the bottom. So that's the seal, which is pretty nice. You know, it's a good drops forward. And like I said, I do, I do prefer it because then you're, the other one, you got to use swivels on and it's kind of tight. This one's still tight, but I like that you don't lose presumably the IQA codes. Now there's no brake clean on this part of the rag. Let's have IQA codes on it. Um, yeah, it appears it does. Yeah, it does has IQA. And I'm wiping them off, just wiping off with no brake clean on that rag. That's nice. But I'm not gonna wipe anymore because I don't want to take all of them off.

I don't know if they put like a sticker in the glove box or something like that, but they really should with those IQA codes because that can make life really difficult. Like I said, when you try to go to reprogram this thing, the PCM, I mean, everything needs an update nowadays. But if you have to have a real, really get in there and reprogram it, um, it was kind of a pain. You don't have to put those codes in if you, if you just update the PCM, though. So I'm just gonna snug that that one down. It's gonna start getting all these on, then we're gonna get the scanner out and go to town on this thing. Resetting the sun and the moon. I'm gonna reset the mass airflow because I cleaned it. Um, that's fine. I'll check them. Um, let's get the wrenches. Get, find the wrench for the front and the rear so we can bleed it because we're gonna just bleed the brakes real quick. Okay, let's get this thing all tight.

Now we get the fun one in the back. See if that one just don't want to lose my socket. Now it sucks. It's just crazy with all these trucks. You know, a lot of cars too, but they just, they throw erroneous codes and there'll be a TSB for an update for the PCM and it just kind of baffles my mind. You know, stuff wasn't like that. So my camera died mid. I don't remember what I was talking about. I went to go reinstall the mass airflow sensor. So I think I was talking about all the updates. You know, all these new trucks and stuff, they all require updates. Kind of just weird, but it is what it is. I guess that's why they're trying to go the electric car route so they can do wireless updates on everything and, you know, don't have check engine lights, bring them back in. And what sucks is if you buy a newer truck and you put, you know, 100,000 miles on it, a couple years, you already had a warranty. And then when that TSB comes out for, you know, say these trucks, they have a, there's another TSB. I don't think it's for this year, but it throws the EGR flow excessive code. And, uh, again, reprogram the PCM. And, you know, some people, if they're out of date, they'll try to charge you for that stuff. You know, and unfortunately, here we have to charge for it. I wish it was, anyway, I wish I could do things for free, but, you know, unfortunately, my mortgage payment, uh, isn't free. You know, they all have bills to pay, especially this time with everything being so expensive. It's tough out there.

That's life. But this is actually really good design. You know, I prefer it. And that's good for Ford for, you know, they fixed their kind of flaw in my opinion. So you don't take the whole stupid housing out, just change the filter and you're good to go. And I don't remember how I had this camera, so I'm having a really difficult time getting the camera to stay. So apologize about the camera, I'm being all funky, but that's just who I am. Funky camera. All right, so let's get this back one nice and tight. And, uh, we'll go ahead and reset everything. It's, I think in the testing, it says to go driving 10 miles and see if it throws it again. Um, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to duplicate that today because I do want it back. So I might just go take it for a drive as long as I can and then just give it back to them. And they're really cool to understand. I made them aware that, um, we're doing this and then they're gonna have to drive it, retest because we don't, I don't really know. There's just so much stuff that that code is so generic. It can come up with anything for the SCR. So that's why we're starting with the obvious. I mean, that the mass air was dirty. I've had aftermarket air filters cause these kind of codes. This crankcase filter was definitely bad. And it says to check all that stuff. So we're following the testing. And I'm not gonna replace these components and then take the injector out and check the injector and find out the injector's okay. It'd be a waste of, you know, their money and my time because I would feel bad charging for that if that didn't fix it. Okay, let me get some brake clean. Let me find my brand today. So that's why I do things a little different, but that's just who I am. Trying to do things in a good order. It may take a little longer, but it saves people a lot of money. So I just try to get all the diesel off. We got the line hook back up. You want to make sure you get it over the hump on this fuel line so it doesn't pop off because I know these are, they're under good pressure, you know, I think like 70, 80 PSI. So, but everything looks good there. Everything's done over there. So I want to show you the filter though, because I know I've seen a video before about this. It's gonna set everything in there for now. It's a little loud because they're swamp cooler, but you can see how those filters are kind of bulged. I think, uh, I forgot who it was that showed that stuff. I think it was Crap. Trying to remember his name. But we'll clear it all up and see what happens. Just want to show the difference after that filter has been replaced. See, I mean, there's smoke out of there, but as you can see, there's no pressure. Before it popped the cap off, the cap off. Definitely a lot better. One thing I will tell you to let the fuel system run before you try to start it because I did not, and it started. It just kind of had a little difficult. Now you can hear our pants change. So let it prime before you try to start it. Don't be like me. But you can see that took care of that. So now let's go ahead and start. Go with the resets.

So I just want to show you the code. It is running right now with the AC on. I haven't done anything to it. I haven't reset any of the codes or anything. Hopefully you can see that. It's a little blurry on my screen. We have a P20 Edward Edward SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold, Bank One Catalyst One pending with the warning lamp on. Like I said, you want to make sure always check TSBs, especially on these newer vehicles because there's, I mean, that's everything's a common problem on these nowadays. So we're gonna go back. You have to turn off. So we're gonna go engine. I don't know. I went all the way out. It's one of those days. So we're gonna clear the codes. Get rid of that. We're gonna exit. We're gonna go back. We're gonna go functional test, special function, clear reset that. That. Now we're gonna pick what I want to reset. Um, now we're gonna do the mass air first. Okay, so mass air is done. Once you turn the ignition off, turn it back on, it's gonna reset the menu. Okay, we're gonna do that. And now we're gonna do something probably I shouldn't do. We're gonna do the DLC. And now, understand, the only reason I'm doing this is because I should have turned my key off. Um, the only reason I'm doing that is because after you reprogram the PCM with updated calibration, it tells you reset that. But I'm wondering these trucks are just kind of really, really finicky. Um, that if you don't say, I reset all that stuff and the mass air was skewed, now those readings are skewed because the mass air was skewed. So with me resetting the mass air, I should reset those two. So everything has a fresh start. Um, and I think I need to go look and see what else I need to reset because I don't remember. Call me. So let me go look real quick and we'll see.

So funny thing, I actually, uh, took a picture of it. So we got the oxide catalyst that's been reset. Um, SCR parameter that's on the other side. And carry out a DPF reset. So that's done. Okay, we're gonna turn that off. Okay, now we're gonna turn the key back on. We're gonna go right there. It wants to do the SCR parameter reset as well. And this is part of the TSB for the reprogramming. So like I said, I'm just doing this to cover my butt because these trucks, everything's so adaptive nowadays. So it's really hard to get an idea. DPF parameter reset. And that's what it wanted over there. Parameter reset. Run self-test. Completed. Run self-test and check for DTC. Let's go off. Shut it on. Fire it up. And let's see what happens. Didn't burst into flame. So we're doing okay today. And yeah, so we don't have any codes. And you see, I did take a picture of it the other day because I wanted to make sure that I did reset everything properly. Um, so I'm gonna go ahead and let it run. I have to do a couple more things. And then when I come back, I'll take it for a drive.

So I just got back from the drive. I drove it probably about six or seven miles, um, because they're going to be here soon to pick it up. Um, as you can see, didn't really run through anything yet, just the misfires and components, but that's kind of a given on these. Um, let's go back. Just make sure there's no codes in it. I had to go in as generic because it won't give me the monitors when I'm actually into the specific vehicle, which kind of sucks. And there's, according to this, there's no codes present. So it's gonna let them know, give it back to them. And, you know, that's all we can do for this for the time being. And hopefully it doesn't come back. But if it does, then we're the next step is to remove the, uh, the DEF injector and do an inspection on that. Make sure we have the correct flow coming out of it. And, uh, I did honestly didn't get further than that. But we'll see what happens. And I'll update you if it does come back or if it's good, because we see these guys a lot.
