So, uh, Austin Barber is he's 6'6" and 7/8. He's built like a... came in weighing, uh, yeah, tackle, um, at 318. He had 33 and an eighth inch arms. Uh, so again, on the lower side. And then his hand size was a 9 and 5/8. He ran a, he had a 1.77 10-yard split with a 5.12 40, and then a 32-inch vert and 9'3" broad.
Okay. Okay. Those were all at the combine. Okay. So let's work backwards here before we talk about Austin Barber as a player. Do you have the details on the trade? Uh, I do. Uh, so the deal was, um, let me, give me one sec. Yeah, it was 105, 145. So now we only have four picks in that range, and 206.
Okay, so it was a six, a fifth, and then our fourth. So we traded up from our fourth round pick, right? Correct. All right. Um, and then we take him at 86. Was he at the Senior Bowl? Austin Barber? That name sounds familiar. I remember a Florida guy there.
Let me double check on that. I, I'll keep, I'll keep looking. Uh, you go ahead and give your thoughts here. Yeah. So, I'm interested to see what the vision here is. Again, I would love if we got a Todd Monken press conference or or some position coach press conferences here. Like, I would love to see... Yes, Austin Barber was there. Yeah. So, I would love to see a George Warhop press conference on this. I want to know what the plan is for Austin Barber because right now, you know, just looking at how he's built from just like the television screen because I didn't get to watch much of him before the draft. I think I might have saw him at the Senior Bowl, but he wasn't one of the guys I was focused on. Um, I'll go back and look at the tape on him at the Senior Bowl. Um, really interested to know what the plan is for him, right? Um, and who wanted this pick? Who, who pushed for this pick? Um, if this is a Warhop project, um, he thinks he could play center. Okay, it's a bit unorthodox, but stranger things have worked out. Um, he certainly has the measurements to stay at tackle if he wanted to. Um, I would imagine his tape is not that, but you know, if you think you can slide him to guard or slide him to center, you get another offensive lineman. I'm not going to be upset at it. You know, there were some guys who are centers in the NFL, well, right now, that I thought would be good players. You know, Connor McGovern, one of them, but maybe the injury scared them off of him. Um, you know, I'd just be interested to know what the vision is for it, right? And what the plan is for him and what the plan is for the center position because I think that's the important thing right now. Alex says here, "In Andrew Berry, we trust." Look, Andrew, he gets, he gets the benefit of the doubt here, right? Um, you know, that, that second, third round pick has always been tricky for the Cleveland Browns. It, it seems like that's the one they give, like if somebody loses a battle, um, and sometimes in war rooms, right, certain coaches lose battles for certain players and then you got to compensate them with something. Sometimes the Browns tend to use that second, third round big pick to kind of be like, "Okay, you lost this battle here at seven, but you can win this battle here at at this pick, right?" Um, we'll make you happy because you got to manage relationships in an organization, right? You don't want somebody feeling like they're never listened to, their input isn't valued. You want to get the best out of them. You got to, you got to, you got to give and you got to show some flex there, right? Um, so sometimes it does happen. I mean, like the Dylan Gabriel pick is a prime example of this. It's all been but confirmed at this point that that was a make-good for Kevin Stefanski, right? Like, "Okay, you know, we'll get the quarterback that you want. Here you go. Here, damn." Right? Like, kind of that philosophy there. Um, and maybe this is what Austin Barber is. I would have to reach out. I'm gonna probably reach out to some of the people I know. Um, Justin, who covers the Senior Bowl pretty intensely, like you can see what he thinks of him. I'm not going to act like I've watched all the tape on, uh, Austin Barber. This is a guy who fit into a blind spot with me here. If they think he can play center, all right, let's give it a try, right? Um, and in general, given what we saw happen to the offensive line, if you think he's a guard project, I'm okay with that, too, because, you know, Ethan Green is not young.

Right. Yo, there I wonder too, maybe we're looking at this in a different way. I know they say Ethan's going to play guard, but maybe they get into camp and they think to themselves, "Hey, whoever wins this battle between KT Leon and, um, Zach Zenter can play guard for us and we can put Ethan at center where he's not as good, but he's manageable. He's, we would have a veteran center with a young quarterback." Well, the only, the only thing with that in particular is that, um, Monken, in just about every press conference, it feels like when he's been asked about that... It's been saying he's a guard, right? Yes. And that's kind of where I wonder, again, maybe this is one where they think that he can kick in center and he can kind of be that, that guy that they can go ahead and move in and they think that he translates right away. Yeah. Like... Go ahead. My bet. No, no, no. Go ahead. It's one of those things to where it's like that might have been the plan. Um, this is the beast. He's a developmental swing tackle who might be better suited to move to guard. I mean, if you can move to guard, you can move to center, you know what I mean? Um, and to be fair, Emmanuel Oguagwu just went, um, to Jacksonville at 88. Shout out JP. But... Yeah. The, the, to be fair, another 25-year-old rookie. It's not uncommon to solve center like this, right? Like sometimes you draft centers and you play them at center, but a lot of times these are guys who are guard prospects who move over to center sometimes, right? Um, so it's, it's not uncommon, you know, because center is usually the last place that guys get funneled because you make the least money playing center. Well, you used to, you know, I mean, now they gave $40 million to a center who's not even like the best center in the league. But I digress. Maybe he could play center. Maybe they think he's guard. Given how much the Browns' offensive line deteriorated from 2020 to 2023, I'm willing to overstock offensive line. You know what I mean? Like I'm okay with that. Chris with the super chat. I wonder if Barber is a sit and develop piece behind Titus Howard. Um, you know, Mac, tell me your thoughts. So, I'm going to look up his age real quick. Yeah. So, he's, he's 22 right now. He turns 23 in May. I don't know if that's developmental territory. Right? That's what I was thinking, too. Um, you know, at least with Barber, at least looking up on, looking up some of the, uh, different places that he's played basically at Florida and basically where he's lined up. He's lined up at left tackle, uh, his entire career. For the last three seasons, he's been a starting left tackle there. Played 700 snaps the last two. Um, I, again, I think that this is interesting because honestly, I wanted them to kind of do this with Trey Zuniga out of Texas A&M. Um, so I'm interested to see what they view from him. And in terms of just like... We're getting Todd Monken at the press conference right now. He said he sees Austin Barber as a tackle to start with the flexibility to potentially move inside. Okay. Again, like for me, like them moving up 20 spots though for this, like, I, I think the other question that we got to have too is, you know, around Dewan potentially here too. Yeah. Because you can, you can only carry so many, you can only carry so many linemen. And we already got Tevin backing up, backing up as a swing guard. Mhm. And then you have Dewan as your swing tackle. Obviously, it seems that Pono is going to be your starter. Um, but the only spot that's open is center. Yeah, maybe they like Luke Whipler more than we think. I mean, maybe, but again, like him, we talked about injuries in this class, like him coming off of the injury. I just, I don't know how the team is going to view him coming off of that injury, especially with the new group like that. I, cuz again, like I would say this when it comes to Whipler, like everything that I've heard at least when it comes to like in the building, everything like that is like, "That dude's going to end up being a coach." Because of like how well the dude actually like prepares and like goes through everything, uh, in terms of his preparation week to week. So, I, I can see him kind of working out well in that regard. But again, it's just staying healthy. And the other part too is, is he also the size that they want? Like, you know, we talked about it with, you know, the size of of Barber coming out of college at, you know, he's 6'6", 315, but, you know, when it comes to, you know, Luke Whipler, and let me just double check, like, uh, when it comes to him, at least coming out of college, like he was listed at, again, I might be totally wrong and totally off base here. Yeah. Like 6'2", 303. So, like on the lighter side for for that spot. So the more, the more... I don't know if they want somebody bigger in that role too. The more I think about this pick, the more I think it's, uh... So that's where I'm, I'm so interested to see like, and at least, and hell, maybe I know you said that Monken's speaking right now, but I'd love to see if, you know, maybe another scout comes out or something like that that they talk to and kind of get some more info on him. Um, and just kind of hear more about about him, cuz again, after you've already taken Pono, jumping up like and feeling the pressure to jump up 19 spots, so fascinating to me. For what, why did you feel the sense of urgency to jump up for him here? Yeah, I, I wonder what it is there. Um, I would love to hear George Warhop talk. I sometimes they give us position coaches. I would love to hear him talk about this pick. Um, because I... You got me. Yeah, because he's the guy who has the most insight to this one. Um, so... Here you got me. Can you not hear me? Oh, can you hear me now? Yeah, I got you now. All right. So, I would love to hear what George Warhop has to say about this one, right? Like, I, I think that's the position coach who's going to be able to offer some insight into this selection. Clearly, they like him. Um, I, I think what they, they see him as a tackle, they're going to move him at guard. Um, like, how long is Titus under contract for? Like two years? So, I guess if you know you're worried about Ethan, like maybe they feel like this is the right time. Well, Titus is under for three. Titus is under for three and you got, um, uh, Ethan Jenkins at at guard for two. Yeah. Like I wonder if this is just they liked him as a player, so they wanted to bring him in. Obviously, there was a sense of urgency to jump up the board to go get him. Um, their intel's been pretty good, so I imagine they didn't do that for no reason this year, right? Like when, when, when they've showed the level of like patience with Pono and Emmanuel and McNeel Warren, I'm going to trust that, you know, if their intel was telling them that he was going to come off the board before they got to 104, that he was probably going to come off the board there. They've been proven right on that a lot today. So... Sure. Yeah, I, I, I imagine there's a reason. Like, they, they liked him. They wanted to move up for him. Um, I think this is the, this is a luxury pick for them. I think what McNeel Warren was a luxury pick for them. I think this is a luxury pick for them. Um... I don't know if McNeel, if McNeel Warren is a luxury pick though. I think trading from 70 to go after him is what makes it a luxury pick, right? Like it's, if you really, really needed to get McNeel Warren, you probably would have took him earlier, but him being there at 58, it's kind of like how JK was a luxury pick. It's like, "Well, they traded up for..." Okay, that's fair. Like, but they didn't need it. It's like, "Oh, the value is just so good, I can't pass it up. Let me throw that in the cart." When it probably wasn't, yeah, a part of the plan there. Um, so yeah, I think I think that they're, they're in their luxury pick part. They like this player. I, I think this is also, you know, front offices have politics that you have to deal with. And we've heard the rumors and I don't know if the rumors are necessarily true, but you know, something that we've heard out there was that George Warhop was more indicating Proctor than Spencer Brown. But the Browns scouting department and Andrew Berry especially, like I think Andrew was super high on Brown personally, um, were high on Brown, and that's where they ended up going. And, you know, George Warhop, you got to make him happy somewhere. So you can say, "Hey, look, we're going to take our offensive lineman who you want, and you take the guy that he wants." Like, I think that might be part of this, right? You know, just trying to, uh, make sure that people are involved in the process and then, you know, you're saying yourself, "You trust George Warhop." Um, you know, he has a great resume as an offensive line coach. If he wants a guy to develop in the third round, you know, if this is the guy that he wants and he thinks can turn into something, let him do it. You know, we'll see what it turns into, right? Um... Hey, by the way, 49ers with their yearly throwaway third round pick of taking a running back with Kaylin Black. I like Kaylin, though. He was pretty good at the Senior Bowl. But yeah, I think that's kind of the philosophy of this one. I'm interested to learn more about this selection. I think the instinct for a lot of people is going to be to... on this one. Um... Yo, for sure. I'm going to want to learn more about this selection. It, it, I have my gut feeling on what motivated this. Um, but, you know, if one of your position coaches and one of your most veteran position coaches is saying, "No, I could turn this guy into something." The third round is about where you want to do that at, right? Like that's about where you're comfortable making that move. So... Well, and let's actually, like, I think one angle of this too that we have to look at and actually, you know, um, keep in mind when it comes to this too is, you know, the long-term future of the offensive line where, you know, you have Dewan coming into the last year of his deal. Uh, you have Kevin Jenkins only on a one-year deal, and both of those are your swing guard and swing tackle. If you're able to go ahead and coach this guy up this year, basically at that point, you know, maybe he takes over as your, you know, long-term swing tackle or, uh, if he has to come in and be one of your guards, you can go ahead and have him train for that during the season. And on top of that, it's not like both of those swing, both your swing guard and swing tackle are, you know, the clean bill of health that you really want from that. Like having somebody that you know has plenty of, uh, experience at least when it comes to collegiately, but having somebody that you're, you know, developing to be that guy in the future when those, when both of those players are known for their injury history, I also think is kind of smart on their end as well. Yeah. And I honest to God, if you're gonna draft a player that I'm not very aware of at a position, offensive line is probably where I'm okay with that happening. Um, because like push, come to shove, if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, but it's not gonna mess your team up. Um, and if it does work out, then that's gonna be amazing, right? So cool. You know what I mean? Like I prefer this to what they did with Dylan Gabriel last year where it's like, "Oh, we're gonna have to like build the offense around that guy for like five weeks and like really try to like change things to make that work." You know, if this guy gets on the field, he gets on the field. If he doesn't, he doesn't. Um, but it's just a, it's a swing at a project for George Warhop. And I imagine this is something that George Warhop really wanted. And, um, we'll see if he can make the most out of this. Um, and if he does, then we're lucky. And if he doesn't, then okay, well, you know, we can talk about it's a lot easier to talk about things you could have done with a third round pick versus like things you could have done if you do this at like, like if they take Kaden Proctor there and we don't, and Kaden Proctor doesn't end up being good and he's the first tackle off the board, that's gonna hurt a lot more, right? So, you know, hey, if you're gonna take a swing here, I think I'm okay with that being at tackle. The other. Hey, hey, hey, hey.
