This is a fantastic way to train your brain, yeah, to get it comfortable with speaking at length, speaking long sentences. I guarantee you guys have never spoken sentences this long in all of your years of learning English. We're starting with a very basic, simple sentence. You can say it with me, or you can pause the video and repeat after me. Ready? A man opens a bank account. Again, a man opens a bank account. Okay, I think we all probably know what this means, right? We have a guy, a man, a male, okay, an adult man; he opens a bank account. Yeah, he goes to a bank; he opens an account. I guess he wants to start using this bank. Let's see what happens next.

Level two. Once again, you can say this with me or pause the video and repeat it out loud. A man opens a bank account to save money. Again, a man opens a bank account to save money. Ah, okay. Now we know; now we know why he is opening the bank account, right? He's opening the bank account to save money, in order to save money, in order to have some savings, in order to save up some money. These all mean the same thing. Let's say level two one more time. Ready? A man opens a bank account to save money.

Level three. Here we go, getting a little bit more difficult now. Repeat after me, or say it with me. Here we go. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future. Ah, okay. Now we know why he is saving money. He is saving money for his future. He wants to make sure that his future self, him in the future, has enough money. Yeah, he has an option, right? He could spend all of his money today and tomorrow have none, or he can spend less today and tomorrow have more. Let's say this one more time. Say it with me or pause and repeat out loud. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future.

Level four. Getting even trickier now. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest. Ah, okay. One more time. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest. Okay, we have an "and" here telling us that he's not just saving money for his future. Yeah, he has two reasons why he's opening this account. The first one is he's saving money for his future; the second reason is he's planning to invest. What does that mean? That means he wants to grow his money, right? Maybe he wants to invest in the stock market; maybe he wants to invest in a certain company. Okay, he's looking for a smart way, a long-term way to grow his money, right? Much like growing a plant in the garden, he wants to take the money he has and grow it bigger by investing. Let's say this one more time. Level four. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest. Okay, great job.

Level five. Getting even more complex. Say it with me or pause and repeat. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market. One more time. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market. Okay. Remember, in level four, we were sort of contemplating, we were sort of thinking about, wondering about where he's going to invest his money, how he's going to invest his money, right? What is going to be his avenue, right? What is going to be his avenue for investing his money? Well, now we know: in the stock market. Now we know specifically how he's going to invest his money. Okay, we have our "how." So let's say this one more time before we move on. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market.

Level six. We're getting really serious now, guys. Okay, let's take a look at this. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth. Wow, it's getting to be quite the mouthful, quite the mouthful. What does that mean? That means it's a little bit difficult to say, especially in one breath, right? Let's try one more time. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth. Okay, great. What does this mean? Grow your wealth. Wealth is just money, right? It's the money you have. He wants to grow his wealth; he wants to increase, okay, increase his wealth by investing in the stock market. So sounds like this guy is taking his future very seriously. Let's say this one more time in one breath. Ready? A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth. Wow, that was pretty quick. Are you guys keeping up with me? If you find my speed to be a little bit fast, you can pause the video. Try saying it yourself at your own speed. Okay, let's level up again.

Level seven. Say it with me or repeat after me. Ready? Wow, I had to take a breath in the middle of that because now this single sentence is getting to be such a big super sentence that I can't say the whole thing in one breath. Let's try it again. Are you ready? A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth and achieve financial stability. Okay, let's take a look at the blue part. What are we adding to this sentence? Okay, so we know that he's investing; we know where he's investing, in the stock market; we know why he's investing, to grow his wealth, but now we know a second "why." There's the first "why," to grow his wealth; here's the second "why," he wants to achieve financial stability. That's a pretty complicated expression, right? Achieve financial stability. Stability, okay, achieve. If you achieve something, then you get something done. Okay, for example, here on my YouTube account, I have achieved the accomplishment of gaining 25,000 subscribers. That's something I've achieved, something I have tried to do and successfully done. Okay, to get something done, maybe we could say successfully. Okay, so what is he trying to do? He wants to get financial stability. Financial just means about money; stability means that something is stable; it's stable, okay; it's um, not going to tip over, right? If a chair is stable, you know you sit in it, the chair is not going to fall over. If you take a glass and put it on a table, the glass doesn't wobble; it doesn't fall over; the glass is stable. Well, your finances can be stable as well; your financial situation. In other words, he doesn't want to have to worry about money, like, okay, this month, where is my money coming from? Will I have enough money? What will I do if I don't have enough money? That kind of situation we could call financial instability. We could add an "i" in to make it instability, meaning that your situation is not stable; it's kind of a precarious situation. Ooh, there's a big word, precarious. If you guys can use this word, I'm sure native speakers would be very impressed. Precarious just means kind of um, kind of a risky situation, kind of an uncertain situation, kind of a danger situation. The situation is a little bit precarious; just means uh, my financial situation is a bit precarious; that means it's not very stable. Okay, let's say it one more time and then move on. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth and achieve financial stability.

Level eight. There are 10 levels total. If you guys are still with me, give yourself a pat on the back; you're doing great. You are building up that spoken English confidence little by little. We're stretching these sentences longer and longer; we're making it more and more complex. You know, your spoken ability is a lot like a muscle. If you're training your biceps, you go to the gym, right? You have certain exercises that really train that muscle. Well, that's what we're doing today. Okay, say it with me. Ready? A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth and achieve financial stability while also setting aside funds for emergencies. Okay, wow, this is getting really complicated, right? We've just learned something new that he's doing, something else that he's doing. Okay, he's setting aside funds for emergencies. Funds, just another way to say money that's used for something. This is my travel fund, my money that I'm saving to be spent on travel, right? This is my school supplies fund; this is the money that I'm saving to be spent on school supplies. Well, he's setting aside funds for emergencies. Setting aside, just as another way of saying saving. He's taking this money; he's putting it over here so that he won't spend it; he's going to save it; he's going to keep it for a certain reason. That reason is emergencies. Mmm, yeah. You know, maybe there's a storm and lightning strikes his roof; he has to get the roof on his house repaired. Maybe he's driving and he hits a nail and he gets a flat tire; the tire on his car deflates; deflates, the air goes out of it. All right, maybe he's, you know, walking to work and he trips and he breaks his ankle; something bad happens and he needs money now. What we're talking about is a financial emergency, a money emergency, right? So all of the stuff he's doing is in preparation for these things, for a financial emergency. He's prepping. Here's a good word, prepping; just means getting ready, getting ready. He's getting ready for financial emergencies. Okay, let's say this one more time. I'm going to go a little bit quick. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth and achieve financial stability while also setting aside funds for emergencies. Okay, guys.

Level nine. We're getting close to the end here. Here we go. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth and achieve financial stability while also setting aside funds for emergencies and major life events. Major life events. What could that be? A major life event. Major just means big, a big life event. You know, could be a wedding, something good, something happy, like a wedding. Okay, could be something bad, like a funeral, something where, you know, there's there's a big event, a big milestone in your life. Okay, milestone basically just means something big that happens in the journey of your life, right? And he might have to set aside some money for that. So there's two reasons why he's setting aside funds, setting aside money. The first reason is emergencies; the second reason, major life events. Okay, are you ready to say this again? A little bit faster this time. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth and achieve financial stability while also setting aside funds for emergencies and major life events. Wow, guys, we have grown this sentence by a lot. Okay, remember how small this sentence was when we started out? I'm willing to bet that you have never spoken a sentence this long. Am I correct? If I'm correct, down in the comment section you can can let me know, "Yes, uh, teacher Connor, you are correct; this is the longest sentence I've ever spoken," or you can say, "You know, teacher Connor, actually no, I have spoken sentences this long before." Let's say this one more time, really quick, and then we'll move on to the final level. Let's go. Ready? Level 10. The final level. If you guys are still with me, you're doing fantastic. Let's keep going. Come on, push. You probably feel a bit of discomfort, right? You probably feel a little bit uncomfortable, but think about it: without discomfort, there is no improvement, no advancement. Another way of saying that is no pain, no gain; something you hear a lot from people who work out, who go to the gym, right? That's exactly what we're doing. The unfortunate reality of learning a language is that if you are not willing to experience some discomfort, then you're not going to make any progress. So, okay, first with level 10, we're going to take it slow. Okay, so say it with me or repeat after me. Ready? A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth and achieve financial stability while also setting aside funds for emergencies and major life events such as buying a house, getting married, and starting a family. Now we know specifically what the major life events are. Remember, in level nine, we weren't certain what they were; we weren't sure what he was talking about; we had to speculate, speculate; we had to guess. Okay, we had to place conjecture; is another fancy way of saying that, right? We had to take a guess; we had to take a shot in the dark; that means take a guess when you're not really sure. Okay, so yeah, we said, "Oh, maybe a wedding; maybe a funeral." Now we are getting some specific examples of what is being discussed. Okay, so uh, such as buying a house; that's a major life event; getting married; that's a major life event; starting a family; that's a major life event. Okay, now all three of these milestones, life milestones, all three of these major life events, these cost a lot of money; these are expensive things. So it makes sense that this guy wants to open an account and save money and plan for his future and invest his money in the stock market and grow his wealth and get some financial stability, achieve some financial stability, while at the same time also setting aside funds for emergencies. Okay, uh, you know, yeah, even if you start a family, you still need uh, an emergency fund, right? What if your child needs an operation? You know, knock on wood; knock on wood; that's something we really don't want to happen. So knock on wood, right? But uh, he's really covering his bases; covering his bases; that means he's thinking about every possible problem, every possible scenario, right? He doesn't want there to be some expensive surprise that drains all of his funds, drains, right? Or sucks away all of his money. Okay, let's say this one more time at more of a medium speed now. Once again, you can say it with me or pause the video and say it by yourself. A man opens a bank account to save money for his future and plans to invest in the stock market to grow his wealth and achieve financial stability while also setting aside funds for emergencies and major life events such as buying a house, getting married, and starting a family. Now I'm really willing to bet that this is the longest sentence you guys have ever spoken. If you have ever spoken a sentence longer than this one, I will be really surprised. Okay, let's say it one more time quickly. Are you ready? I'm going to say it at the speed that a native speaker would probably say it at. Level one, starting off basic, simple, and easy. I want you guys to follow along as I talk slowly at first, getting gradually quicker, gradually faster, or once again you can pause the video and repeat it back out loud. Let's take a look. A woman heads to a big job interview. Okay. One more time, a little quicker. A woman heads to a big job interview. A woman heads; that means she goes; she is going to a job interview. Yeah, she's going to apply for a job; she's going to apply for a job, a new position. Okay, but not just any job interview; a big job interview. In this context, big is another way of saying important; like this could be a big opportunity for her; this could be a big chance to level up in her career. Let's say it one more time quickly, like a native speaker would this time. Ready? A woman heads to a big job interview.

Level two. Now starting off slow. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver. H. Okay. One more time, a little quicker. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver. M. Okay. Now we know the location of the job interview; it's in a city called Denver in the United States, and the interview isn't just in Denver; it's in downtown Denver, in the heart of the city, in the middle of the busiest, most bustling area of the city. But it's not just in downtown Denver; it's in the middle of downtown Denver, so right in the middle of the middle of the city. Wow, it sounds like whatever company she's interviewing for probably has a really nice office space, right? Okay, so let's say this one more time quickly, like a native speaker would. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver.

Level three. Getting a little more serious here. Let's start off slow. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous. Okay. One more time, a little more quickly. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous. M. Okay. Now we have an insight; now we have an idea about how she's feeling, about her emotions. Okay, and we see that she's feeling nervous. We could also say anxious, or maybe a little worried, or maybe a little bit uncertain. Okay, yeah, on the inside she feels like this; she's a little stressed out, maybe about this interview. I wonder why? Maybe because the interview is in the heart of downtown, in a big fancy office; it feels a little intimidating, a little scary, or maybe she's not feeling too confident in her interviewing skills. I wonder why she's feeling nervous, anyway. Let's read it one more time quickly. Ready? A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous.

Moving on to level four. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time. Once more, quicker. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time. All right, we can see here that she's got a real mixed bag of emotions. What's a mixed bag of emotions? That means she's feeling lots of different things. Yeah, her feelings, her emotions, her thoughts are not so simple right now; in fact, they're pretty complicated; there are a lot of conflicting emotions, right? Feelings that don't really agree with each other, like, yeah, she's a bit nervous; a bit just means a touch, a tad, a little bit, right? She's a little nervous, a little worried, a little anxious, but at the same time she's also feeling excited, right? She's like, "Ooh, this could be a great opportunity." Maybe she's going to have a chance to get a fancy new job title, like a manager position, or maybe a chance to make a lot of money in this new job. But whatever the reason, she's also feeling excited. All right, let's read this one more time quickly. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time.

We've reached level five, which means we are halfway there. So I'd like you guys to take your hand, give yourself a pat on the back, to congratulate yourself for taking your English studies seriously. Yeah, you guys are making a big investment in your future as an English speaker, and you know what, like I mentioned earlier, this is a lot like training a muscle at the gym; we are training that spoken English muscle by increasing the difficulty of these sentences little by little. Okay, let's take a look at level five, slowly at first. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited about the great opportunity at the same time. Okay. One more time, a little quicker. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited about the great opportunity at the same time. I can barely say that in one breath; it's getting to be pretty long, pretty advanced. So what are we adding to the sentence this time? Well, now we know why she's a bit nervous and a bit excited; she's got this great opportunity, a great opportunity; maybe a lot of money, like a high salary, like the job will pay her a lot of money, right? Or maybe she's excited to work downtown in the heart of the city. Yeah, or maybe, maybe she's really looking forward to moving up, to leveling up in her career with a new title. Okay, so yeah, the opportunity is great; so because the opportunity is so great, she's excited about the possibilities, but also a bit nervous because she doesn't want to flub the interview; she doesn't want to botch the interview; she doesn't want to mess up the interview; she doesn't want to fail or not pass. One more time quickly now. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited about the great opportunity at the same time.

Level six. I'm not sure I can still do this in a single breath, but let's try, slowly now. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream gig. Faster now. Ready? A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream gig. Okay, so what are we adding this time? She's excited about the great opportunity, the great opportunity, the great chance to, to do what? Well, to land her dream gig. Ah, okay, so this is what she has a chance to do; this is what she's going to be given an opportunity to do, to land or to get her dream gig. A gig is another way of saying a job. Now, gig, this word is very informal; maybe if you're talking to your buddy drinking a beer, you know, you'd say, "Hey, how's the new gig? How's the new gig treating you?" That just means, "Are you enjoying the new job?" Right? But if you are in an interview, you probably don't want to use this word; it sounds a little too casual, too informal, right? You can't go to an interview and say, "I'm really excited for the chance to get this gig." It just sounds a little bit sloppy, a little bit crude. Okay, so anyway, this is her dream gig. Okay, this is like the job of her dreams. We don't know exactly why; we don't know exactly what the job is; all we know is that it's her dream gig. So I'll draw her face when she thinks about it, right? She is just so over the moon; over the moon; she is so ecstatic; that means really excited, really happy about the chance to get this job, to secure this position. Let's read it one more time quickly now. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream.

Gig level seven, let's go. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream gig, hoping she doesn't trip over her words. Okay, now we know what she's so worried about, right? Well, not so worried, cuz remember she's just a bit nervous, just a little nervous, but now we know specifically why. Okay, let's read this one more time, a little quicker. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream gig, hoping she doesn't trip over her words. Okay, so taking a look at the blue here, like I said, now we know specifically why she's a little bit nervous. Maybe sometimes when she's put on the spot, when she's put on the spot, she trips over her words; she has trouble speaking. What's "put on the spot" like that mean? If you're in a situation where there's a lot of pressure, the spotlight is on you, there are high expectations for you to perform, for you to speak, for you to do something right. So you know, if you are in the middle of an interview, yeah, you are put on the spot, and the interviewer is asking you lots of questions and expecting good answers. Okay, so she's hoping that she doesn't trip over her words; in other words, when she's talking, she doesn't want to make any mistakes; when she's talking, she doesn't want to stutter; she doesn't want to misspeak. Okay, one more time quickly now. A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream gig, hoping she doesn't trip over her words.

Level eight, guys, things are getting serious, and guess what? We are almost to the twist ending, the funny twist ending. Something crazy is going to happen at the end of this super sentence. Let's read this again; let's skip right to the quick level, okay, like a native speaker would. Are you ready? A woman heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream gig, hoping she doesn't trip over her words or spill coffee on her new outfit. Oh man, yeah, this is really giving me a workout, and I'm a native speaker. If you guys are keeping up with this, then you're doing an awesome job. Let's see what happens next.

Level 9, let's go slow it first. A woman with toilet paper stuck to her butt, oh no, heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream gig, hoping she doesn't trip over her words or spill coffee on her new outfit. Oh no, guys, this is not looking good for the woman in this story. This poor woman, unbeknownst to her, unbeknownst to her, uh, she has toilet paper stuck to her butt. Maybe she used the bathroom before heading into the interview, and she didn't realize it, but a string of toilet paper became stuck to the back of her pants, to her butt, to her rear end. Oh my God, that is so embarrassing. I would say that's beyond embarrassing; I would say that's humiliating; I would say that she is going to be mortified, mortified when she realizes what has happened. Oh no, what a disaster, what a terrible, terrible, awkward situation. Let's read this one more time quickly now. A woman with toilet paper stuck to her butt heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream gig, hoping she doesn't trip over her words or spill coffee on her new outfit. Guys, I think tripping over her words, spilling coffee on her new outfit, these things are the least of her worries; these things are the least of her worries. What does that mean? That means there's something else that she should be worried about more than those things, right? The toilet paper on her butt is what she should be concerned with, not tripping over her words, not spilling coffee on her new outfit. Let's see what happens in the final level of this super sentence. A woman with toilet paper stuck to her butt heads to a big job interview in the middle of downtown Denver, feeling a bit nervous but excited at the same time about the great opportunity to land her dream gig, hoping she doesn't trip over her words or spill coffee on her new outfit, but sadly doesn't get the offer. Oh no, sadly she doesn't get the offer. Oh my gosh, she doesn't get the offer for the job; she doesn't pass the interview, and I think we know why, guys; I think we know why she didn't pass. You know, even if she did misspeak once or twice during the interview, even if she did trip over her words, even if she did do something really embarrassing like spill a little coffee, I think that pales in comparison, that pales in comparison to having toilet paper stuck to your butt. You know, there's really not much that's more embarrassing than that. So this poor lady, she got a new outfit, she traveled all the way, she headed into downtown Denver, the heart of downtown Denver, and in the end she didn't get the gig; she didn't land the role; she didn't land the job; she didn't get the position; she didn't pass the interview. Let's read this one last time quickly, as if you were a native speaker. Let's go. Starting off slow, starting off simple, we have level one. Now remember, I'm going to read the sentence, and you can say it with me or pause the video and repeat it back. Let's take a look. Okay, we have a woman; she's going to be the focal point of this sentence; she's going to be the main character in this story that we're taking a look at today, and this woman, she, I guess, has some news; okay, something has happened, something significant, something important, something big has occurred, has taken place, has happened in her life, and it's not just news, it's exciting news. Yeah, it makes her excited; it must be some kind of positive news, right? So she wants to share this exciting news. Let's say this again at a medium speed this time. Ready? A woman shares exciting news. And okay, one more time, let's say it quickly like a native speaker would. Ready? A woman shares exciting news.

Moving on to level two, our simple little sentence is starting to get a little bit more complex, a little bit more challenging. Yeah, guys, bit by bit, we are going to push ourselves to speak longer and longer sentences. Let's take a look at this one slowly at first. A happy woman shares exciting news. Okay, still pretty simple. We know that we're talking about a woman, okay, a grown woman; we know that she has news to share; we know that the news that she wants to share is exciting; okay, and now we know how she's feeling; we know that she's really happy. Let's say this sentence again at a medium speed this time. A happy woman shares exciting news. One last time quickly now. A happy woman shares exciting news. We've stretched the sentence a little bit longer. Let's read it again slowly at first. A happy woman shares exciting news with her family. Now we talk about this word a lot on my channel here. Determined means you are, you really want to do something. You have a mission. You have a goal. You have an aim, and you're trying to make it happen. You really want to make it happen. You're not going to give up so easily. Okay, so seems like he's determined to do what? He's determined to paint his house. Okay, he is determined to make this happen. He's not going to give up. He's got a goal. He's got a mission. That is something I have zero interest in. I believe in this idea of work hard, play hard. Work hard, play hard. What does that mean? That means when it's time to work, you give it all you got. It means when it's time to work, you give it 100%, but then when it's time to relax, when it's time to play, you play hard as well. You play 100%, and you work 100%. So this guy, he's taken on this solo house painting project over the weekend, and he's starting early on Saturday morning. Ghh, I kind of wonder how early, because everyone's idea of early is different, right? But now, with this added context, I think it means he’s halfway through the time that he has to complete the project. Maybe he’s halfway through the weekend, and he still barely made any progress. Right? So context matters. Okay, let’s read it again quickly now. Ready?

Okay, so finally, in the end, he threw in the towel. That is today’s idiom. You guys know that I try to teach a new idiom with every new video. This is a really useful one, a really spoken English idiom that people actually use. It just means you give up, right? You’re trying to do something; you give up; you throw in the towel. So what does he do when he throws in the towel? He calls a professional. Maybe he picks up the phone, and he calls a house painting service, and he says, “Hey guys, I’m in over my head; I’m really in over my head here.” Another idiom. What does that mean? Think of it as like being underwater, right? “I’m in over my head; I’m drowning here, right? I need help.” So he calls the professionals, and you know that’s the end of our story here. So it’s a happy ending. One can only assume—I assume—that the professionals come, and they finish the job, and they make it look amazing. Let’s say it one more time. Are you ready? Quick speed. Really feel, feel the burn, guys. Push yourselves.

Take your hand and give yourself a pat on the back, because you deserve it. You’ve made it all the way through this monstrosity of a super sentence. But guess what? The video isn’t over yet. Let’s have a cool-down activity. So just to reiterate, just to reiterate, just to explain it again, to let you guys know one more time, the idiom in this video was “throwing in the towel.” What does that mean? It means admit defeat when something is too difficult. But actually, you know, there are a lot of ways to express this idea in English. Yes, you can just say “give up”; that’s fine. Involuntary. What does that mean? That means you didn’t make the decision to give up; you didn’t choose to throw in the towel; you were forced to give up; it was involuntary. You didn’t do it voluntarily, right? It was involuntary. One more: “pack it in.” “Pack it in.” This one, I would say, is the most similar to “throw in the towel.” You decide to pack it in; you decide to pack it in.

So guys, what we’re going to do now is we’re going to have a one-minute speaking challenge. I have a question for you here: Have you ever thrown in the towel on a hobby or project? And what I’d like you to do is push yourself to speak for a full minute. Talk for a full minute. I’m going to set a timer and give you a demonstration of what I’d like you to try and do first. So first, watch me. I’ll show you how I’d like you to try and respond to this question. All right, guys, so here’s my personal connection; here’s my uh, connection to my life. Uh, when I think about “throw in the towel,” when I think about this question, I think about a fitness goal that I had last year. I started watching these videos on YouTube about this exercise called a muscle-up, a muscle-up, a muscle-up. A muscle-up is when you grab a hold of a pull-up bar, and you first do a pull-up, right? So this is a really challenging physical exercise, but I was watching these videos uh, on YouTube, and I saw these people who could do it really well, right? And they made it look really easy. So I decided I wanted to try and, try and do it. I went out every day and practiced pull-ups, but in the end, I threw in the towel. It was too hard; I gave up. That was my example. I pushed myself to talk for the full minute; I didn’t stop talking, and that’s what I want you guys to do, too. Don’t worry about making mistakes; just keep going. We need to train ourselves to get comfortable talking at length, talking for long periods of time. So here’s your minute. Go for it.

E. What better place to kick things off than level one, right? So we’ve got a short sentence here. Let’s take a look and read it together. Slow speed the first time. Let’s go. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore.” One more time, a little bit faster now. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore.” Okay, interesting. We’ve been introduced to our two main characters here. We have a guy, and we have a girl, and they are both at a bookstore, right? They are browsing; they are perusing; they are looking around for something good to read, maybe flipping through a book here and there. Well, the guy sees the girl, and guess what? She’s not just any girl; she’s a cute girl. So maybe this guy is interested in her; maybe he wants to try and flirt with her; maybe he wants to try and get her phone number. I’m not sure what’s going to happen next, but let’s read this level one sentence one last time together quickly now, and then we’ll move on. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore.”

We’ve leveled up for the first time, and you can see that I have added some blue text to the super sentence. Yeah, we have stretched it longer. Okay, so let’s try saying the new sentence together slowly at first. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her.” Mm. Okay. One more time, medium speed. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her.” Okay, so in level one, I made a prediction, right? Guy sees a cute girl; he thinks she’s cute. So my prediction was he was going to go and try to flirt with her, tried to get her phone number, tried to do something to get her attention, right? And here we can see in level two, he’s starting to think more about it; he is working up the nerve to talk to her. Yeah, he’s psyching himself up; he’s drumming up the courage; working up the courage. All of these are different ways of saying that he’s trying to find the confidence to go over there and talk to her, yeah, to start a conversation with her, start a dialogue with her. We could also say “chitchat with her”; that’s a bit more casual, right? Just have a chat with her. So let’s say level two again at a quick speed. Ready? “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her.” Again. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her.” Man, I remember when I first started dating how difficult it was to work up the nerve to talk to girls. I was very nervous; very shy. It was not easy to work up the nerve or find the confidence to go and start talking to them. What about you guys? Moving right along to level three, let’s just dive right into it with a slow read. He’s getting ready to go and talk to her, and he’s worked up the nerve; he’s started to walk over, and as he’s walking over, at the same time that he’s walking over, his heart is racing: bu-bum-bum-bum, bu-bum-bu-bu-bu-bu, beating faster and faster in his chest. Maybe the closer he gets, the faster it beats, and it feels like it’s going to beat right out of his chest. That’s an expression we sometimes say if you’re really, really excited or nervous or worked up. “I felt like my heart was going to beat right out of my chest.” Okay, again with a quick read. Here we go. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her, heart racing as he walks over.” Last time. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her, heart racing as he walks over.” Dude, I am on the edge of my seat with today’s super sentence. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next. What do you guys think? Is he going to hit it off? Is he going to hit it off with this girl? In other words, are they going to get along well and like each other immediately? Or maybe she’s going to be a bit standoffish, standoffish? Maybe she’s going to be a bit like, “Who are you? I don’t know you. Why are you talking to me?” I don’t know. Let’s find out. Okay, level four. Slow read. Here we go.

Yeah, it’s not looking good for him. Why do I say that? Because he still hasn’t thought of anything to say. You know, he worked up the nerve; he’s walking over; he had all this time to think of something to say, but guess what? He still hasn’t thought of anything. He is still trying to think of something clever. Clever just means something smart, something creative, maybe something that will make her interested in him, something that will make her laugh, something that will make her smile. And maybe he’s trying to think of something clever to say; maybe he’s trying to think of something clever to do; maybe he’s trying to think of something to say or do, but he’s drawing a blank. Oh no, he’s drawing a blank. That means his mind is blank; he’s struggling to think of anything. It’s like somebody has erased all of his thoughts, right? So he’s kind of in trouble. Let’s read this one last time at a quick speed. Ready? “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her, heart racing as he walks over, trying to think of something clever.”

Level five, guys, it is getting pretty difficult. So if you’re starting to struggle, don’t worry, don’t worry. Keep going; keep working that spoken English muscle. Okay, no pain, no gain; that’s what I always say. Let’s take a look slowly at first. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her, heart racing as he walks over, trying to think of something clever, but he ends up making a lame comment about the weather.” Oh no, this guy! What does he end up doing? In other words, in the end, after all of that waiting, what does he do? He makes a lame comment about the weather. So boring, right? He was trying to think of something uh, to get her attention, to make her smile, to make her laugh, to uh, uh, uh, pique her interest, right? To pique her interest, but the only thing he can think of is a lame comment about the weather. What is lame? Lame is like the opposite of cool, right? So not cool, really kind of uh, embarrassing, right? Let’s read it again quickly now. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her, heart racing as he walks over, trying to think of something clever, but he ends up making a lame comment about the weather.”

Level six, slow read. Here we go. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her, heart racing as he walks over, trying to think of something clever, but he ends up making a lame comment about the weather, which sounds way more awkward than he hoped, but she smiles anyway.” Okay, so we’ve got a glimmer of hope, a glimmer of hope. There’s still a small chance that this guy can win the heart of this girl, even though he made a lame comment about the weather, which sounded really awkward; it didn’t come out right; it didn’t sound the way he was hoping that it would sound. Guess what happens? She smiles anyway. Maybe she can see how nervous he is, and maybe she thinks that’s endearing. In other words, maybe she thinks that’s cute and sweet, you know, and likable. Maybe she’s even a little bit flattered that he’s so nervous, flattered, right? She sees how nervous he is, and she realizes, “Wow, he must really like me if I make him so nervous.” So maybe that’s a little bit flattering. Okay, let’s read it one more time, quick speed, then we’ll level up again. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her, heart racing as he walks over, trying to think of something clever, but he ends up making a lame comment about the weather, which sounds way more awkward than he hoped, but she smiles anyway.”

Level seven, this is no Weenie Hut Jr anymore. This is getting really tough, even for a native speaker. This is a real mouthful now, and I would like to take a quick moment to remind you guys, if you still haven’t liked the video, please take one second to do that, leave me a comment, make sure you’re subscribed, maybe even check out channel membership if you want PDFs and extra videos. Level eight, guys, we’re getting so close. I believe in you; you can do this. Okay, push yourself. Slow read. But then the girl took hold of the wheel, right? At the helm of the ship, and now she’s sailing it away from the iceberg, out of the path of danger and into smooth sailing, into clear waters, right? It looks like there’s still hope because she’s taking this conversation in a new direction, asking what kind of books he’s into. What does that mean, “into”? “Into” just means interested in. I could say, “What kind of video games are you into?” That means, “What kind of video games are you interested in?” So hopefully they will have a shared interest in a genre, right? Maybe they both like romance books; maybe they both like mystery novels; something like that. Hopefully, fingers crossed, they will have something in common. Okay, let’s say this sentence one more time quickly now. “A guy sees a cute girl at the bookstore and works up the nerve to talk to her, heart racing as he walks over, trying to think of something clever, but he ends up making a lame comment about the weather, which sounds way more awkward than he hoped, but she smiles anyway, and teases him for it, asking what kind of books he’s into.” We’re in the final stretch, guys. Get your second wind; find your second wind. That means you had energy; you used your energy; now you’re tired, but you can find a second wind and get your energy back for the final stretch, for the last two levels. Okay, slow read of level nine.

I’ll tell you what, because you’ve worked so hard getting all the way here to level 10, we will only read level 10 one time, at a medium speed.

We have a happy ending to this roller coaster, this complete roller coaster of a super sentence. Right from the very beginning, we were uncertain about what was going to happen. Are they going to hit it off, or is he going to crash and burn? Right, but in the end, we see that they exchange numbers; he gets her phone number, she gets his phone number, right? And by the time they do that, he is on Cloud 9.

Now, I'm sure a lot of you guys already know this expression, but it's a really useful one, a really fun one. It just means that you are over the moon. There's another idiom; do you guys know how much I love idioms? Over the moon, on Cloud 9, just means you are so, so happy. In fact, it's more than happiness; I would say that it's when someone feels ecstatic. Ecstatic is like extreme happiness, happiness to the point of bliss. You are blissed out; you are just like, "Man, today can't get any better. Things are perfect."

No workout is complete without a cool, cool-down activity, so that's what we're going to do now, guys. Like I just explained, the idiom "on Cloud 9" describes feeling extremely happy or euphoric. Yeah, extreme happiness, right? So in this case, the guy's awkward start leads to a fun, flirty exchange, and by the end, he's feeling on top of the world. There's another great idiom: over the moon, on Cloud 9, on top of the world; they all mean the same thing. They mean that this guy is feeling great; he's feeling perfect; he's feeling so, so happy.

So here's my question for you, and what we're going to do is push ourselves to reply to this question. Yeah, just speak out loud, quickly or slowly, it's up to you, uh, for a full minute. And here's the question: Have you ever felt like you were on Cloud 9? Now I'm going to go first and give you a demonstration of how I would like you to try and push yourself to talk for this full minute. Here's my minute: To be honest, I've been over the moon all week. I've been on Cloud 9 all week. I've felt on top of the world all week long. Why? Because my channel here on YouTube just hit 100,000 subscribers. And not just 100,000; I think by the time this video comes out, maybe we'll be at 107,000. The channel is growing so quickly, and it has always been my dream to successfully make content and make videos that people actually watch. And as an English teacher, make videos that actually help people. So it's so amazing to, you know, get to a point in my journey where that's starting to happen. You know, next stop, I would love to hit a million subscribers, but I'm going to take it slow. This week, I'm just on Cloud 9.

So guys, that's my personal connection; that's how this expression relates to me and my life. What about you? Push yourself for that full minute. Go ahead.

We know that today's sentence is going to be about this man. What is this man doing? He's buying something, right? Where is he buying it? He's buying it online, on the internet, right? And how is he buying it? Interesting. How is he buying it? He's buying it impulsively. Impulsively. What does it mean to buy something impulsively? If you do something impulsively, then that means you don't think about it before you do it; you just do it. You go with your gut, and you do something. This guy was on the internet; he was shopping around; he was looking at this; he was looking at that; then he saw something that he liked; he didn't think about it, right? He hadn't been planning to buy it for weeks and weeks and weeks, saving up money to do so. No, he saw it, he wanted it, he bought it. So we call that an impulse buy. Let's practice saying level one at a quick speed together, and then we'll move on. Ready? "A man makes an impulse buy online." Again: "A man makes an impulse buy online." A third time: "A man makes an impulse buy online."

Level two of our super sentence. You can see that I've added some blue text, some blue words. Yeah, we've taken this small little sentence and we've begun to stretch it longer and longer. That's what we're going to do with each level. So let's begin level two with a slow read. Once again, you can say it with me as I say it, or you can pause the video, and you can repeat after. Okay, let's take a look: "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed." One more time, medium speed: "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed." All right, so what are we learning about the situation here in level two? Well, he's getting ready for bed, but he's not quite ready yet, because what is he doing? Here's a really interesting, really native expression: "doomscrolling." Doomscrolling. Actually, I would guess that a lot of native speakers don't even know this word, don't even know how to use it. It's kind of an internet slang term. Doomscrolling. Doomscrolling. I'm sure we've all done this. If you doomscroll, then you take your phone and you go on a social media app, like Instagram, right? And you scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll; you just keep going and going and going, and you feel like you can't stop, right? Let's practice saying level two at a quick speed. Are you ready? "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed." One more time: "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed." Awesome. We've leveled up again. Our super sentence is getting more and more complex, more challenging, more difficult. Okay, let's do level three together at a slow speed. One more time, medium speed: "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed, adding a blender to his cart." Okay, so now we can see what this guy bought, right? You can use it in your kitchen; uh, it's an appliance, an electronic appliance that we use to blend things up, right? Maybe you want to make a fruit smoothie; you put a bunch of different fruits and powders and maybe milk and ice into a blender; you turn it on. I guess this guy was in the market for a blender, in the market for, in other words, maybe he's been needing a blender. But then again, maybe he hasn't been needing a blender, because remember this is an impulse buy. So actually, come to think of it, maybe he isn't even in the market for a blender. In other words, maybe this is something he really doesn't even need; maybe it's something really unnecessary. If you are in the market for something, then you are planning to buy it because you need it, right? For example, I'm in the market for new boots for this fall, right? I need new fall boots; I don't have any, so I'm in the market for fall boots. Who knows if this guy was really in the market for a blender or not, but we do know that he bought it online impulsively, which tells me it was probably unnecessary, right? Let's say it one more time at a quick speed, and then we'll level up again. Ready? "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed, adding a blender to his cart."

Level four, getting more and more difficult, more and more challenging, guys. We are working out that spoken English muscle in the same way you would work out your biceps or your back or your other muscle groups at the gym, right? We are working out our spoken English muscles. So let's read level four slowly at first: "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed, adding a blender to his cart without checking the reviews." Uh-oh, that's not a great idea, huh? Let's read it again, medium speed: "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed, adding a blender to his cart without checking the reviews." I think we all know that when you are online shopping, it's a great idea to check the reviews. What are people saying about the product? How are they reviewing the product? Are they leaving good reviews or are they leaving bad reviews? Are they giving five-star reviews or are they giving one-star reviews, right? Although I'll be honest, these days it's kind of hard to be sure, right? Because a lot of products on the internet have fake reviews. So even if something has a bunch of five-star reviews, maybe the person selling the product, the seller of the product, simply paid for those reviews, right? Maybe they're fake; maybe they're bots, bots like robots online, right? But anyway, this guy, he did not check the reviews of this blender, and maybe that decision will come back to haunt him, come back to haunt him. In other words, maybe it's a decision that he will end up regretting later on, later down the road. Okay, let's say it one more time quickly now: "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed, adding a blender to his cart without checking the reviews." One more time: "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed, adding a blender to his cart without checking the reviews."

Level five. If you guys are still with me, you are killing it; you are killing it; you're doing a really good job, and we are already halfway there. So push yourself; keep going; you will be glad you did, because your English speaking skills are going to get better and better. All right, guys, we're at level seven now, and this is no weeny hut jr anymore; this is getting really challenging, really difficult, right? A man cave is a kind of a stereotypical idea of what a guy would do when designing a room to make it the most enjoyable thing for guys, right? Like maybe there's football decorations; maybe he's got a really big TV; maybe he's got like a gaming console set up; he's got beer; he's got foosball; you know, he's got a poker table, etc., etc. That's a man cave, kind of a room that men would really enjoy, right? So let's say that I want to redesign my living room and turn it into a man cave. Okay, I'm not just going to buy a deck of cards and, you know, a cheap gaming console; I'm going to shell out; I'm going to shell out, and I'm going to buy the best of everything to make that man cave extra impressive. One more time, quick speed, let's go: "A man makes an impulse buy online while doomscrolling before bed, adding a blender to his cart without checking the reviews, thinking he found a steal and waits two weeks for delivery, imagining all the fancy smoothies he'll make."

Level eight. We're almost there, guys. Push, push, push; keep going. No pain, no gain. We are getting really close, my friends. By any stretch of the imagination, this is not a best-case scenario; in fact, it's basically a worst-case scenario. But this guy, he's choosing to look on the bright side; he's choosing to see the silver lining in this situation. In other words, he's going to make the most, make the best of a bad situation, and he's still going to use this broken blender. In fact, it seems like he found a pretty creative way to use it, right? So at least there's that; at least it's not a complete waste of time and money. And maybe our friend has learned a lesson about late-night doomscrolling, impulse buying, right? I'm going to go first to give you an idea of what I'd like you to try and do. So here's my minute responding to this question: You know, actually, for me, this is a pretty relatable topic; it's a pretty funny topic, too, because I make impulse purchases online all the time, uh, and these purchases usually have something to do with fitness, with working out, because I always go through these phases, these periods of time where I get really excited about working out, right? Getting back in shape, and I will go online; I'll see something that's supposed to make fitness, working out easier, and I get excited, and I buy it, and then it's delivered, and I realize, "Oh, this thing is low quality," or "this thing is not very good," or maybe I use it for one or two days, and then I get bored of it. One time I bought like a shake weight that was supposed to build muscle in your chest, and the thing was so bad, it just didn't work at all, and that was a poor decision for sure. All right, that was my response, my personal connection to this theme, this idea of impulse buys. What about you? Uh, do you make impulse buys? Do you doomscroll late at night? Let me know. Okay, guys, we've leveled up to level two. You can see that some blue text has been added to the sentence, making it just a little bit more difficult. Know the location of his search. We know where he's looking; where he's searching. He's looking around in his living room. You guys know what a living room is, right? It's the room where you do most of the living. There's your couch and your TV and your chairs in the living room. It's the space in your house where the family can get together and get comfortable, maybe watch a movie together.

Let's say this again quickly, and then level up once again. Ready? A man looks for his glasses in the living room. Again, a man looks for his glasses in the living room. Once more, a man looks for his glasses in the living room. Level three; we're moving right along. Let's jump right into it with a slow read: A man looks for his glasses in the living room, but can't seem to find them anywhere. Once more, medium speed: A man looks for his glasses in the living room, but can't seem to find them anywhere.

Okay, this guy is not having a lot of luck finding his glasses. He's looking, looking, looking, but he can't seem, he can't seem to find them anywhere. Yeah, he can't seem to find them. That's a very spoken English expression, just meaning that, you know, he's trying; he's making an attempt; he's making an effort, but it's not working. He can't seem to do it; he can't seem to find them. We can use this expression when you are struggling to do something. Maybe I buy a new cabinet at Ikea, right, some new furniture, and I bring it home, and I take out the instructions, and I get to work building the cabinet, putting together the cabinet, but it's not going well. My wife comes home; she sees that I'm making a big mess, that I'm not making a lot of progress. She says, "What's going on here?" I say, "I can't seem to figure this out; I can't seem to get this right; I can't seem to do it."

Once more, quick speed, and remember you can say with me or pause and repeat after me. Ready? A man looks for his glasses in the living room, but can't seem to find them anywhere. He's turned the place inside out; he's turned it inside out. He's looked; he has searched; he has gone through the living room from top to bottom, and he can't find those darn glasses anywhere. So he's going to carry on his search somewhere else; he's going to take his search to a different room of the house. He's headed to the kitchen, so he's checking the kitchen just in case. "Just in case" means he's being safe; yeah, just to be safe. He's going to check in some place where he doesn't think he will find the glasses, but who knows; maybe there's a small chance that the glasses are in the kitchen, so he's going to take a look just in case. All right, let's say this again, quick speed. Here we go: A man looks for his glasses in the living room, but can't seem to find them anywhere, so he checks the kitchen just in case. Level five; we're halfway there, guys. Don't give up; we are halfway through this workout. Keep pushing. Let's do a slow read: A man looks for his glasses in the living room, but can't seem to find them anywhere, so he checks the kitchen just in case, opening every drawer even though he knows they wouldn't be there. Okay, one more time, medium speed. So this guy is leaving no stone unturned; no stone will be left unturned. This is a really colloquial, a really spoken English expression that means he is looking everywhere. Imagine that there are lots of rocks, lots of stones, and you're looking for something, right? So you're going to turn over each one of these rocks in your search; while you go about your search, you are going to overturn each of these stones. So that's where the expression comes from; it just means that you are looking everywhere you can possibly look, and that's what he's doing here. He's opening every drawer in the kitchen even though he knows they wouldn't be there. Yeah, there's really not a chance of finding them there, but he's so desperate to find his glasses; but he's so desperate to find his glasses that he will leave no stone unturned. One more time quickly now. Ready? A man looks for his glasses in the living room, but can't seem to find them anywhere, so he checks the kitchen just in case, opening every drawer even though he knows they wouldn't be there. Level six; things are getting messy; things are getting hairy; things are getting tricky; challenging; difficult. All of these mean the same thing; they all mean that this is starting to get hard, even for me. Okay, but no worries. Let's take a slow read of level six together: A man looks for his glasses in the living room, but can't seem to find them anywhere, so he checks the kitchen just in case, opening every drawer even though he knows they wouldn't be there, and then decides to retrace his steps. Ooh, love this expression; "retrace your steps." What does that mean? Another way of thinking about this expression, "retrace your steps," is to work backwards, right? You're trying to find something; yeah, we use this saying, this expression when something is lost and we're trying to find it. You're looking, looking, looking; can't find it anywhere, so what do you do? Work backwards; think; retrace your steps. Where were you last when you used it last or when you last saw it, right? Really great expression. Let's skip the medium read and go straight to the fast read because I know you guys can do it. Let's go. Ready? A man looks for his glasses in the living room, but can't seem to find them anywhere, so he checks the kitchen just in case, opening every drawer even though he knows they wouldn't be there, and then decides to retrace his steps. Level seven, baby; this is no joke; this is some serious stuff. All right, but I know you guys can do it. You know, maybe he's getting ready to go out; getting ready to go to work; getting ready to go do this or go do that, and so he, he thinks back to, "Okay, where was I when I first started getting ready? I was in the bedroom, so why don't I retrace my steps; work backwards all the way to the bedroom." He's going to check and see if he left them by the bed; by the side of the bed; maybe on a nightstand; a nightstand, right, which is where you put a glass of water, where you put a book, where you put your phone next to your bed. Once more quickly now. Let's do it: A man looks for his glasses in the living room, but can't seem to find them anywhere, so he checks the kitchen just in case, opening every drawer even though he knows they wouldn't be there, and then decides to retrace his steps back to the bedroom to see if he left them by the bed.

We could also say, here's a really spoken expression, that he's in a funk; he's in a funk. Just means you're in a bad mood. Somebody might ask him later today, "Hey, what's wrong? Are you okay?" Maybe he says, "Yeah, you know, I'm just kind of in a funk; I'm kind of in a funk because I couldn't find my stupid glasses this morning." One more time, quick speed. Don't give up now, guys. He thinks to himself, "Ah, I'm such a scatterbrain." What's a scatterbrain? If you are a scatterbrain, then that means, means you're kind of an unorganized person, right? Maybe you are forgetful; you leave things places; you forget to do things; you get names and dates mixed up or switched around. If you have some of these habits, then you might be a scatterbrain. What's the opposite of a scatterbrain? Uh, I would say the opposite of being a scatterbrain is being really on top of things; on top of things. If you are on top of things, or we can also say "on the ball," if you are on the ball, on top of things, that means that everything is organized; everything is under control; um, everything is sorted and dealt with. You're very meticulous; you're very detail-oriented, and you don't make many mistakes; you're very careful, right? All right, guys; this is it; your last chance to speak. But for right now, she is stepping away; she's stepping away. We could also say "taking a step back" or "taking a step away" from social media, right? There's lots of ways to express this idea. We could also say she's taking a breather. Here's a really spoken English expression for you guys; yeah, if you take a breather from something, then that means you are giving yourself a rest; you are taking a break from it, right? Imagine that you go to the gym every day for a month; yeah, at the end of the month you are feeling exhausted, and you tell your friend, "You know what? If you take your finger and you sort of trace the top of the weights, you will find a layer of dust that has built up on top of them as a result of what? As a result of having been left idle; yeah, you haven't touched them in a long time, so they've just been sitting there, right? So in this situation, Anna is returning to books that she hasn't touched in years. Maybe she's forgotten about some of these books; maybe she's forgotten how much she used to enjoy them, but now she has an opportunity; now she has a chance to rediscover, or discover again, right, rediscover her love, her passion, her interest in these books. Maybe your stress levels are very low, and you almost never feel stressed out. Well, it sounds like Anna was pretty stressed out before she made the decision to take a break from social media, and she didn't even realize it. Yeah, sometimes that happens in life, right? We're really stressed out, we're really overwhelmed, and we don't even realize it. So her stress levels, they start to drop. Drop just means go down. Let's read it one more time, quick speed. H, what is a notification? Especially at nighttime, and you know, when you're trying to go to sleeping, ding—the constant notifications could be a really big deterrent; deterrent to good sleep; in other words, the constant notifications could definitely stand in the way of good sleep or stop you from getting good sleep, right? So now that these notifications are gone, of course she's sleeping better. This is a terrific benefit to take a step away from your phone, taking a break from social media. Are they really being productive? Are they really working hard and getting lots of stuff done? Lots of stuff accomplished? No, they're slacking off, crowding around this man watching videos on TikTok. So, from the boss's perspective, this is kind of a friendly way of saying, "Hey guys, I know you're having fun, but maybe it's time to get back to work."

Let's read it one more time at a quick speed, and then level up to level 10, our final level for today's super sentence. I want you guys to pay attention to how quickly I say this portion of the sentence: creating a bit of a a bit of a a bit of a. This is one of the reasons why spoken English is so tough, because if you try to say each one of these words individually, you might stumble over yourself or say it incorrectly. Sometimes native speakers are lazy when we speak, and words tend to run together, blur together. So we wouldn't say, "creating a bit of a commotion"; that would sound too robotic. We would say, "creating a bit of a commotion," a bit of a commotion. I wouldn't say, "with a bemused expression"; I would say, "with a bemused expression," with a with a with a. You can combine these two words: with a bemused expression. Level 10 baby, we made it!

Now guys, I know this is going to be tough; it's going to be challenging, but come on, push! We are so close to finishing this lesson. That's a great word to know: mortified, mortified. It means so embarrassed that you want to die.

Okay guys, one more quick read of today's super sentence, and then we will have a cool-down exercise. Are you ready? You could look white as a ghost because you are shocked or really surprised, or because you're scared, or even because you're very sick. When she saw the car speeding toward her, she turned white as a ghost and froze in place. After hearing the news about the surprise test, he looked white as a ghost and started frantically checking his notes. So in both of these examples, the person is afraid, right? And so they look white as a ghost due to fear, or we could also say they look white as a ghost out of fear.

Every good workout needs a cool-down exercise, and speaking English is the same way. So I have a question I would like you guys to try and respond to, try and talk out loud and discuss with me: Should employees be allowed to use their phones at work? Okay, so I'm going to take 30 seconds and give you guys a demonstration of how I would respond to this question, then it will be your turn. Really try to speak for the full time given. Okay, keep pushing through that 30 seconds; don't stop talking. In my opinion, yes, employees should be allowed to use their phones at work. You know, even though they might occasionally get distracted and waste a little time, or doomscroll on their phone for a bit, I still think this beats the alternative, or the other option. What's the other option? You forbid people from using their phones, and they get resentful; they get angry at the boss. I don't think that's good for anybody, certainly not workplace morale. Yeah, I know that personally I can relate to this; I can relate to this. In other words, I sympathize with Tom, because you know, I've also been in this situation. Like Tom, I also am not very good with names. It's tough for me to remember people's names. Are you guys good at remembering names? You can let me know in the comments section. I have a feeling today's super sentence is going to be an awkward one. Let's say this again at a quick speed, and then we will level up. Tom forgets someone's name at a party. Again. I can also say I steer clear of bars; I steer clear of clubs. That means I try not to go anywhere near them. Quick speed, and then we will level up again. Ready? Great word: awkward. Awkward is a feeling, right? You feel like this; it kind of makes you cringe. If you cringe, then you recoil at something embarrassing or awkward. Maybe you think about something stupid you did when you were 12 or 13, and you cringe: You go, "Oh, why did I say that? Why did I do that? What was I thinking?" By the way, what's the most cringe thing you guys have ever done? Maybe we can share some cringe stories down in the comment section. One more time, quick speed. Let's go. And the other person laughs and says, and the other person laughs and says. We've got a great expression here: close but no cigar. If you guys could use this correctly, it would be very impressive. What does it mean? It means you were close, but um, no, that's incorrect; you almost had it, but no. And to be honest with you, in this case, I think Pat is just being nice, because is Chris really that close to Pat? No, these names are really different, right? So I think Pat is going easy on Tom; he's not giving him a hard time, not giving him a hard time; he's helping him save face, helping him save face. In other words, you know, trying to de-escalate the situation, or make it less intense, make it less awkward, make it less uncomfortable for everyone. One more time, quick speed, then we level up. I remember when I was a little kid, I would go to my friend's house for dinner, and his mom was a great cook, and she would make really delicious food, and I would eat one plate of food, two plates of food, three plates of food, and then I would go and ask her sheepishly, "Can I have four plates of food?" I would ask in a sheepish way, or we could say I would ask sheepishly. One's an adjective, one's an adverb. This story is so funny to me; these situations where both people are at fault. Okay, let's read it one more time, quick speed. Are you ready? And make sure you stick around after level 10 because we are going to do a language breakdown and a speaking cool-down exercise as well. So they both laugh nervously; they laugh it off, and what do they decide to do? Just stick with Buddy. They say, "Hey, hey, hey, you know what? Let's just forget about it. You call me Buddy; I'll call you Buddy. Problem solved." All right, quick speed, the last time we are going to read today's sentence. Next we have a language breakdown. Yeah, we're going to take a closer look, very quick, at a couple of the more difficult expressions we saw in that story, starting with close but no cigar. Once again, this means almost correct or successful, but not quite; yeah, doesn't quite hit the mark; isn't quite accurate. It comes from old carnival games where cigars were given as prizes. Oh, that's kind of interesting; I didn't know that. Here are two example sentences: One, he almost guessed the number of jelly beans in the jar; close, but no cigar. Yeah, you know, there's a jar full of candy, all of these jelly beans, and someone is guessing how many; yeah, how many jelly beans, the number of jelly beans in the jar. Maybe they guess, you know, 350, but there's actually 360, so close, but no cigar. The team nearly won the match, but missed the final goal; close, but no cigar. Yes, so they almost won the game or the match; we can also say, but they missed the final goal, so they were close to winning, but close, but no cigar.

Remember blurt out? Blurt out means to say something suddenly without thinking, often in an awkward or emotional moment. So she blurted out the answer in class before the teacher finished the question. Yeah, I think we all had a person like this in our class when we were in school growing up; yeah, the teacher's pet. In English, we call this kind of student the teacher's pet; it means they want to be the teacher's favorite student, and so they are desperate to answer all of the teacher's questions and impress them. I was so nervous; I blurted out my secret without meaning to. What does it mean to stick with something? It means to continue doing or using something, even if it's not perfect or you are unsure about it. So, for example, I decided to stick with my current job, even though it's not ideal; it's not the perfect situation or the ideal situation, but this guy is going to stick with his job, his current job; that means the job he has right now, right? He's going to stick with it; gonna stick with it. That means, yeah, it's not his favorite job in the world, but he's going to keep going with it. Let's stick with this restaurant; it has great reviews. Yeah, maybe one person wants to leave; the other person wants to stay, and they say, "Let's stick with this restaurant; let's not go somewhere else." After all, after all, it has great reviews. In other words, people have a lot of positive things to say about it.

And now for my personal favorite part of these videos: some speaking practice cool-down. Down. Yeah, you know, guys, these super sentence videos are a lot like a hit workout, a high-intensity training workout for your English, and like every good workout, we need a cool-down. So I have a question for you: Are you good with names? Yeah, do you have a good memory for people's names? What do you do if you've forgotten someone's name at a party? Do you have a special technique or trick? What I want you to do is try and speak for one full minute. I'm going to go first and give you a demonstration of what I'd like you to try and do. So first, listen to me and my response, then it will be your turn. Okay, so yeah, in my personal case, in my personal situation, you know, I could relate a lot to today's story because I'm terrible with names. It's really bad; it's really awkward; it's really embarrassing. For example, my current job, on the weekend that I do right now, I've been there for two years, two years, and there are still several people who I work with on a daily basis, but I don't know their names. Why don't I know their names? Because uh, I never asked; they never introduced themselves to me, and I never asked them, and now it's too late; I feel like it's too late to ask; it's pretty embarrassing. And if I were to ask them now, I just feel like that would be really cringe; they'd be like, "You didn't know my name for two years?" All right, that was my embarrassing response to this question; now it's your turn; take the full minute; push yourself to keep going.
