All right, today we're going to be talking about how to mix up Master Building nutrients the correct way. Uh, it's my little buddy back there. I have to give them treats so it'll stay out of the garden. Let's go, let's get to it.

Alrighty, we're gonna mix up some nutrients. And if you've seen my YouTube channel, if you've seen any of the videos, you've probably seen me just take it and dump it all into a five-gallon bucket and fill it up with water. Uh, I've done it for years like that, eight years, and I haven't had any problem. But I want to show you guys how the manufacturer says to do it.
This one comes from Master Blend. This one's a little wet, but this is a kit. And this one has the Master Blend tomato formula and Epsom salt already mixed up. This one has the calcium nitrate. Now, the directions for this, right from Master Blend, says, I'll bring it in there so you can see if you can read that. "Directions: In one gallon of water, dissolve one level scoop of 5-12-25. Then dissolve half a scoop of calcium nitrate."
Now, this is 5-12-25 because it's got the, um, 4-18-38, the tomato formula, already mixed with Epsom salt. So that changes the chemical formula. So that's why, you know, some people get confused about that. But this just says in a gallon of water. So if you're doing five gallons, you know, you can mix it up. And the direction says to dissolve your Master Blend first. Then, after that's dissolved, then you add the calcium nitrate and dissolve it.
Now, I'm going to show you how to do it if you want to be really careful, like people used to be. And that's what people, some people get excited about, is you mix it up into two separate containers. And I'll bring you in here for a close-up. But I've got a couple, I've got one white one and one blue one. You don't have to do this. But the white one, you can see when you dump the Master Blend in, it looks, it's got kind of a yellowish color. And the blue bucket over here, when you dump the calcium nitrate in, the calcium nitrate generally, it's a white color. So you can actually see when it's totally dissolved.
So what I'm going to do is put the Master Blend and Epsom salt in the white bucket. Put the calcium nitrate into the blue bucket. And when they're both dissolved, then I'll dump them both together, cover it up, and store it for when I need it.
All right, so we'll bring you all in for a close-up. You've got a little, a big old whisk to mix it up with. You don't need this. You can just use a paint stirrer or whatever you have to mix it. Um, I used to be a chef, so I just have this on hand, so that's why I'm using this. You don't have to go out and buy one of these. Or if you've got one in the kitchen, just use it, wash it off.
Now, we've, I've already pre-measured my nutrients. This is my Master Blend, my Epsom salt, and this is my calcium nitrate. We've got 12 grams of Master Blend, 6 grams of Epsom salt, and 12 grams of calcium nitrate. Now, you can put anywhere between 10 and 12 grams of the Master Blend and the calcium nitrate, and between 5 and 6 grams of the Epsom salt. I usually start off with the 10-10-5 ratio for microgreens if I'm just going to start them from this stage and put them into the downspouts here.
If I get transplants, like this lettuce right up front here, we've got those as transplants from Home Depot, so they're already started out and get ready to go. And I usually put those into the 12-12-6 ratio. So if you're starting with this, you want a little bit weaker ratio. Something like this basil here, if you're just pulling these guys out, this one's went a little too long. But if you just get something like that out, you know, I start that with a little weaker ratio. And then this, you want to go ahead and bump it up to 12-12-6. At least that's what I do.
So I'll bring you in for a close-up. We're going to dump these into the buckets. You can see what it looks like, and then we'll mix them all together.
All right, so what I did was took a gallon jug and I put two gallons in here and two gallons in the blue bucket. Now, what I'm gonna do is I've got one more gallon. So I'm gonna pour half of it into here, roughly half. But I'm using this gallon so that I know that I've got exactly five gallons, right? So for half of it in here, then I'm gonna pour the other half into the blue bucket. You can hear that going on right now. So I've got two and a half gallons in each bucket.
Now, this, some stuff is falling. I'm outside and there's trees, so all the little bits of debris and that are falling in here. I don't really worry about it. So here's our mixture. If you need to, you can just make sure you get all of that out of there and see it in the bottom and just stir that up. It's got a little yellowish tint to it. All right, so we know that's stirred up. Now let's move over to the blue bucket.
All right, all of that in there. See why I use the blue one instead of the white? You can see the calcium nitrate down there. Now we're just gonna stir this until that gets dissolved.

Stop for a second here so you can see with the blue container, you can see that still got a little ways to go. [Laughter] So good. And you can see just about there. Stir it for one more second. Finish that up there. Rinse this off. All right, now we'll just take this and combine them.

Makes five gallons and you're ready to go. All I do is take, uh, this one's full, but I usually just use my almond milk jug and I just dip it out of there. Take this and pour it in. And I'm actually going to use this right now. I'm getting some more downspouts set up. I've got about 10 of these to go ahead and start doing. So we've got some work to do.
But if you're not going to use it right away, go and cover it up. And I usually let this sit. I mean, it can last a couple of weeks like this. Yeah, you don't want to let it sit in the sun. If you have it and it's going to be where a little light's getting to, you might want to get a darker one with a dark lid. But I'm using it up right now and I usually use it within a couple of days, so I don't mix up too much.
I've got, you know, lots of stuff over here. If you've only got one little container that you're using and you mix up five gallons, you want to go ahead and set this in a dark place, otherwise algae will grow inside of here too. So right now, I'm using this. I'm going to go ahead and leave it in this white bucket.
