[music] Hey guys, welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Michelle and today we're back with another tutorial. So, this is what we're going to be making today. It's a mesh [music] tote bag, perfect for everyday use, especially for the summer using fun colors like this one. It's a [music] super easy project. The stitches that we're going to be needing for today's tutorial are single crochet, double crochet, and chains. And it works up very quickly. [music] This one took me about 2 hours, so it's [music] perfect for a last minute gift or just a cute little bag to make for yourself. I also made this smaller version with a slightly [music] smaller hook. I use t-shirt yarn for this bag, but obviously you can use other yarn for this pattern. That's enough of me talking. Let's [music] get to the tutorial.
Okay, so for this tutorial, you're going to need some t-shirt yarn. For my t-shirt yarn, I'm going to be using a 7 mm hook. You're also going to be needing four stitch markers, some scissors, and a yarn needle. To make the bag, we're going to start with a slip knot. And then we're going to chain 24. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. Okay.
Okay, so I have my 24 chains. We're now going to start [music] the base of the bag. And to make the base of the bag, we're going to be crocheting into this chain on this side as well as this side. We're going to be working in rounds [music] to create the base, which will look like a rectangle. The base is going to be made of single crochets. Into the second chain from the hook, so one, two, we're going to put our first single crochet. >> [music] >> I'm going to be crocheting into the back bump of the chain because there will be less holes in the base. Normally, we put our hook through the top of the chain, for example, but this time we're going to be crocheting into this back bump. So, into the second chain from the hook, my first single crochet. It is much harder to crochet into the back bump of the chain, but I promise it is definitely worth it. It [music] looks much better. Okay, so after the first single crochet, we're going to mark this stitch. Then we're going to single crochet in every single chain until the end of the row.
Okay, so I've reached the end of the chain. Now I have one last chain [music] here. Into the very last chain, we're going to do three single crochets. and we're going to mark [music] with our stitch marker the first and third single crochets that we do into that last chain. So that is my first single crochet. I'm going to mark it. Second single crochet and then third single crochet into that same chain space. Mark that third single crochet. Okay, so we've worked down one side of the chain. Now we're now also going to work down the other side of the chain. When we do this, we can also carry our yarn tail underneath our stitches so that we can hide this yarn tail, weave it in at the same time. Okay, so we've done that chain. Now we're working into the next chain [music] and putting one single crochet in every single chain until the end of the row.
Okay, so I've reached the last chain of this round. This is where I put my very first single crochet. I'm going to put two more single crochets into this [music] chain space to finish the round. So one, we're going to mark this [music] stitch as well. So that first stitch in the last chain, [music] we're going to mark. Then we're going to add one more stitch into that last chain. So, just like on this side, we have three stitches in this last chain. We now have three stitches in this last chain as well. We just did two and we did one in the beginning. So, 1 2 3. Just to finish this round, we're going to remove the stitch marker from the very first stitch and slip stitch in that stitch.
Okay, so that's the first round [music] finished. Your work might start to curl like mine, but don't worry, when the bag is finished, and after a few uses, the yarn will stretch and relax a [music] lot. Okay, so next round two, we're going to start by chaining one. And then [music] into that very same stitch that we just slip stitched into, we're going to do three [music] single crochets. One, we're going to mark the second single crochet out of the three. Two, replace our stitch marker in that second stitch. This is creating the corners of our rectangular base. So, 1 [music] 2 3 stitch marker in the second stitch. Now, we're going to single crochet in every single stitch down the row until we reach the stitch marker. [music]
Okay, so I've reached my next stitch marker. [music] We're going to remove the stitch marker and into this stitch, we're going to do three single crochets. 1 2 3. And we're going to replace our stitch marker into that second stitch that we did [music] out of the three. Then continue. So, one more single crochet here in the middle. And then into this next [music] stitch marked by the stitch marker, we're going to do three single crochets again. So remove the stitch marker. Three single crochets. Then replace the stitch marker in that second stitch. Then we're going to work down the row putting single crochets in every single stitch until the [music] next stitch marker.
Okay, so I've reached the stitch marker again. into this stitch. We're going to do three single crochets. Putting the stitch marker into that second stitch [music] again. One 2 three. Then we're placing the stitch marker in the second stitch. Then after we've created that corner, we're going to do one more single crochet in this middle [music] stitch. And then after we've done that middle stitch, we're going [music] to slip stitch into that very first single crochet here. So [music] the stitch before the stitch marker, we're slip stitching into that stitch to finish [music] round two.
Okay, so that's round [music] two finished. Finally, our last [music] round for the base. So, round three, we're going to start by chaining one. And then we're going to do one single crochet into [music] that same stitch that we just slip stitched into. So, one single crochet here. And then into this marked stitch, we're going to do three single crochets once again. Since this is our last round of the base, we won't be making any more corners after this. We don't actually need to [music] replace the stitch marker into the middle stitch. I would though recommend maybe putting a stitch marker into this [music] very first stitch of the round so that we know when we've gotten back to the start of the round. Okay. So, after our three single crochets in that corner, [music] we're just going to single crochet all the way down the side until our next stitch marker.
Okay, so [music] I've reached my next stitch marker. We're going to remove the stitch marker and into that stitch, we're going to do [music] three single crochets. Then down this side, we should have three single crochets along this straight [music] edge into this marked stitch. We're going to do three more single crochets. And then we're going to single crochet all the way down this side until the next stitch marker. And then in this next [music] mark stitch, we're going to do three single crochets again.
Okay, so we've done the three stitches into that last corner of this round. [music] Next, to complete this last side, we're going to put two more single crochets into [music] the next stitches. So, in the next stitch here, one. and then [music] the last stitch two. This is our first [music] stitch of this round. We're going to slip stitch into that [music] very first stitch to complete the round. So, remove the stitch marker and into that first [music] single crochet, do a slip stitch. So, that actually counts as our third single crochet of this side. If you guys remember on the opposite side, we did three single crochets in between the two corners. On this side, we had our last two single crochets. And that very first single crochet that we did counts as our third single crochet of this side. [music] This is what our rectangular base looks like. So, we've made four corners here. And in total, we should have 64 stitches. So the base is finished. [music] This is going to be the right side of our work. So the outside of the base, this is going to be the inside of the bag. Now we're going to be working our mesh stitch to create the body of the bag. We're going to do so by working upwards from the base. Okay.
So with the right side facing you, now we're going to start the body of the bag. The body of the bag is made using double crochet mesh stitch. So the entire thing will be double crochets and chain one. So to start, we're going to chain four. [music] 1 2 3 4. [music] The chain four acts as our first double crochet plus [music] chain one. So it's come out of this stitch here. We're [music] going to skip the next stitch and into the stitch after we're going to do a double crochet. So, skipping this stitch into the next stitch do a [music] double crochet. That's our first double crochet. Then chain one, skip the next stitch. Into the stitch after, we're going to do our next double crochet. [music] Chain one, skip a stitch, into the stitch after another double crochet. So this entire mesh stitch [music] is just a double crochet, chain one, skip a stitch into the stitch after, double crochet, chain one, skip a [music] stitch, into the stitch after, double crochet. So, we're going to be doing this all the way around our base. We're not doing any more increases now. Just [music] doing our double crochet mesh stitch pattern. So, I'm going to do this all the way around the base and then I'll meet you guys once I'm back at the start of this round. Once you reach [music] the corners, there's no change in the pattern. We just continue as we are. Chain one, skip a stitch, into [music] that corner, we're doing the next double crochet. Chain one, [music] skip a stitch, into the next stitch, double [music] crochet. So nothing changes when we work in the corner. Okay, so I've done my last double crochet, [music] chain one. This is the stitch we're going to be skipping. And then to finish this round, we're going to slip stitch into that third chain of the chain four [music] that started the round. So 1 2 3, we're going to slip stitch into that [music] third chain. And that is our first round of mesh stitch completed. The bag is just going to continue mesh stitches [music] until we reach the height that we want, which is going to be 12 rows of mesh stitch. [music] So, this is our first. We're going to do 11 more to start the next round. Just like we did previously, we're going to chain four. This counts as our first double crochet plus chain one. Then we're going to put a [music] double crochet directly into that next double crochet. So double crochet into the double crochet. chain one, double crochet into that next double crochet. [music] So, we're just going to be repeating the mesh stitch all the way around. Double crochet, chain one, [music] and then double crochet into that next double crochet. The bag is still curling at the moment as you guys can see, but once it's finished, and when we wear it with things in it, it will stretch and it won't do that. So now I'm just going to continue doing the mesh stitch, finishing the round with a slip stitch into the chain three, and then starting the next round with a chain four. So I'm just going to continue doing that until I reach 12 rows, and then I'll check in with [music] you guys then.
Okay, so I've done my 12 mesh rows and now I'm on my very last double crochet and [music] the last chain one. And then finally to end this round, we're going to slip stitch as always into that third chain of that chain four. And that is our main body of the bag finished. Now I've done 12 mesh rows in total. And now we're going to start working on the straps of the bag. To start the row of the straps, we're going to, as usual, chain [music] four. Now we're going to work four of these mesh spaces. [music] So four of these mesh squares. Do this by doing the mesh stitch as usual. So our first mesh space, second mesh space, third, and finally fourth. [music] So now we've made four mesh squares here. We're going to start forming the straps. [music] To do this, we're going to chain and then reattach on this side of the bag. I'm going to chain 37. If you guys would like your straps longer [music] or shorter, you can adjust the number of chains, but it has to be an odd number. So, I'm going to be chaining 37. Okay, so I have 37 chains here. [music] Now, we're going to reattach the chain back to the other side of the bag. Just make sure you remember how many chains you did because we're going to need the exact same amount of chains to make the [music] other strap. So, I have 37 chains. To reattach it to the other side of the bag, we're going to skip eight mesh stitches here in the middle. So, [music] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8. That is [music] eight mesh squares. I'm going to reattach my strap [music] on top of that double crochet after the eighth mesh space. Make sure that your chain isn't twisted like this. Make sure that the [music] stitches are all facing outwards. Attach the chain with a standing double crochet. So, just like we normally do with a double crochet, you're going to yarn over and insert your hook into [music] that double crochet below. Yarn over, pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull through [music] the two loops. and pull through those two loops. And then continue with eight more mesh squares. So that's one mesh square. And the last one. So 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 mesh squares. Now we're going to form the other strap in the exact same way. [music] So this was 37 chains. And I'm going to do 37 chains on this side as well. Okay, that's my 37 chains. And then we're going to reattach it on the other side of the bag again by skipping eight mesh [music] squares. So 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8. We're going to be attaching our strap back on top of this eighth double crochet [music] here. So making sure it's not twisted and doing a standing double crochet. So yarn over, insert your hook into the top of that double crochet, yarn over, pull up a loop. It sometimes doesn't feel right cuz this tends to get a bit loose with a standing double crochet, but try your [music] best to pull through both of those loops on your hook. And then pull through the next two. And that is our standing double crochet. Then to finish this round, we're going to have four more mesh squares so that we have eight in total just like on this side. So finishing off with our four more mesh squares. Okay, after our last chain one of that round, we're going to slip stitch into [music] that third chain of the chain four. As usual, slip stitch. And that [music] is our first round of the straps. We're going to do one more round to reinforce it so it's a little more sturdy. And then we're done. So to start the next round, as always, we're going to chain four. We're going to do three mesh stitches on top of the mesh stitches [music] below. So, we have three squares here. Once we reach this last [music] mesh square here, where this strap is starting to come out of that last mesh square, we're not going to put a double crochet into this double crochet here. We're going to start working along this strap directly. So, we're going to skip putting a double crochet into this double crochet where the strap's coming out of. And instead, we're going to [music] chain one as always. And then we're going to skip this double crochet here. We're going to skip the very [music] first chain of the strap. And we're going to put our double crochet into [music] that second chain of the strap. So, this chain here. Try your best to work through the two loops of that chain. I know it's a little difficult, but it does look neater. So, double crochet. It's going to look like that. Then, we're going to chain one. And we're going to continue doing our mesh stitch all along this chain just like we normally do. Double crochet, chain one, [music] skip a stitch, double crochet into the stitch after, chain one, skip a stitch, double crochet into the chain after. So I double crochet chain one [music] into this chain. We're going to skip this chain here and then into the chain after we're going to do our double crochet. chain one, skip the next chain, into the chain after, double crochet. Okay, so continue doing that all along your bag strap and then I'll meet you once we get to the end of the strap.
Okay, so I've just done my last double crochet. Chain one. There's one more chain left of the strap. We're going to skip that chain. Skip the first double crochet here. And we're going to skip the chain after that double crochet as well. And then we're going to double crochet into this second double crochet here. So double crochet and it should match what we did at the beginning over here. Then we're going to continue with our mesh stitch all along this side of the bag until we reach our next [music] strap, stopping one mesh stitch space before the strap. Okay. So, including this space here, I've done seven mesh spaces. And now we're going to start working on the next [music] strap. We're just going to work this in the exact same way as the previous strap. Chain one. We're going to do our next [music] double crochet into the strap chain. We're skipping this double crochet here. And directly into the second chain [music] of this strap, do your double crochet and then chain one, skip a chain, double crochet into the chain after. Exactly like we were doing with this [music] previous strap. So continue doing that and I'll meet you guys at the end of this strap.
Okay. So I just did my last double crochet. Chain one of this strap. Just like we did previously. We're going to skip that chain, skip the double crochet, skip the next chain, and double crochet into this next double crochet here. And that is our second strap finished. And now we just need to do our last three mesh squares. [music] And then our bag is finished. So chain one, double crochet into that double crochet, chain one, double crochet into the last double crochet, and our last chain one. And then finally slip stitching into that third chain of this chain four. Slip stitch. And then to finish off our bag, we're going [music] to chain one. Cut your yarn, leaving a bit of a tail. Pull the yarn through that chain and pull it to tighten. And our bag is done. And then [music] finally, to completely finish off our bag, we're going to weave in this one and only yarn tail. So, yeah, that is it. I hope you guys enjoyed that tutorial and that you love your new crochet mesh bag. I used a six millimeter hook for this one. And I put a little drawstring bag inside just to keep all my little bits and bobs from falling through the mesh. But obviously that's up to you guys.
