Die w/ Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Your body has five hidden modes that only turn on in danger. When someone you love is trapped, your body ignores its normal limits. The brain disables the safety mechanisms that usually hold your muscles back, and people have literally lifted cars with their bare hands.

The second mode is slow motion. When you're about to die, your brain starts recording the world at an extreme rate. Time seems to stretch. Seconds feel like minutes, giving you a chance to react to things you'd normally never even notice.

The third is pain shutdown. When adrenaline floods your system, pain signals get blocked before they ever reach your brain. People have sprinted on broken legs or escaped burning buildings without feeling anything at all until they were safe. It's the same with professional boxers. They don't feel anything at the moment. It's only after the match that they start to feel everything.

The fourth is extreme survival. In icy water or unbearable heat, the human body can stay alive far longer than science says it should. When survival becomes the only priority, your body switches into a mode designed for one goal, not dying.

And the fifth mode is total focus. When death is near, your brain shuts off every distraction. Fear, doubt, noise, completely gone. All that's left is pure sharp survival instinct.
