The Late Show with Stephen Colbert5:10

Stay hydrated. Hold on.

Hey everybody, we're back with the star of Mother Mary, Anne Hathaway. You play a pop star, uh, opposite Michaela Cole, um, who plays your best friend and a, and a, and a wardrobe, a costume designer.

She, yeah, she's a fashion designer and she's my former, she's my best friend and former image architect.

Okay. So, tell us a little bit more about what it's about.

Well, it's, uh, so my character, uh, who has been kind of one of the dominant pop presences, uh, for the last 20 years in the world. Um, so she's like a Lady Gaga kind of.

We were inspired by so many people. Um, we wanted her to be Mother Mary to be her own thing, but we listened to Beyonce, Gaga, Roselia, we listened to Taylor Swift, of course, Lord, um, you know, all of these amazing, but also James Blake and Nine Inch Nails and like, so there were all these different elements that went into her. And yeah, so she had an accident a few years ago and has gone back to her former best friend to basically ask her to make her a dress, but it's more than a dress. She's asking for an identity. She's asking for healing. She's asking for absolution for the wrong that she's done. And Michaela Cole has one of the greatest acting turns I have seen in a very long time, torturing me about whether or not she's going to make me this dress.

Um, we have a clip here. What, what do I need to know about this clip?

This is the beginning of the movie. This is Mother Mary at the height of her power, singing, uh, an original song by Charlie XCX and Jack Antonoff called "Burial."

Ivon rising. It's terrifying. This fits like a glove. I just want to be the winner of want to lose myself to the touch. I just want to be the lover of this black. So fits like a glove. I just want to be the my red heart free like a tell me that it's never enough. This is your burial.

I see a lot of influences. The Beyonce music, like the crown.

That's, that's there.

Wait, are you a secret? Are you a secret pop fan?

I, I just saw Gaga's last Monster Ball, uh, show on Monday. I'm still vibrating.

That's amazing.

Anyway, how did I understand? You mentioned Taylor Swift, but how did she influence this?

Oh, well, I mean, she was just kind of like, like an angel that, like, I felt like was over our heads all the time. David Lowry is a huge Swifty. Yeah. And, um, he was really influenced by the Reputation tour, uh, for all of the concert scenes. And then I was really influenced by her tour film, Miss Americana, and how vulnerable she just let herself be in that. And so kind of showing that, uh, pop stars who were so used to seeing, like, so in their power and so polished, you know, what happens when they're kind of in between moments, when they're having a moment of metamorphosis, which can be so painful. And what happens when you're a really public person and you're still trying to figure things out in the spotlight. And I just, I, you know, I was already a fan, but after that, I just had so much empathy for her and her humanity and, and of course, her talent.

Do you guys hang at all?

We do know each other. Yeah. Yeah, we do. I actually, um, so we filmed this movie in Germany and, uh, over the course of a few years. And when we finished the concert portion of the film, which was the second year, we were in Bonn, Germany. And Taylor was finishing up Eras in Gelsenkirchen, which I know we've all been to. And, um, she did three nights in Gelsenkirchen, and I got tickets and it was, and so, like, me and my family, we went and it was amazing. And she came out on stage and it was just like the whole place exploded. And she just, like, makes the audience feel so loved. And she made me feel so loved. And I'm like, oh my god, Annie, you're so cute. You think Taylor Swift's waving at you right now. I'm like, you're so ador. And so, um, and then, uh, somebody tapped me on the shoulder and they said, Taylor wants you to have this. And I went, what is happening? And I opened it and it was a note where Taylor said, I'm so happy you're here. I'm going to be enthusiastically waving at you. And I was like, oh my god, she's so magical. She did it. She did the. And I was right. I AM SPECIAL.

RIGHT. YOU CAN safely assume everyone is waving at you.

Thank you so much for being here.

Thank you for having me. Mother Mary opens in theaters this Friday. And Hathaway. Everybody, right back Johnson.
