We are so glad that you are joining us this morning. My name is Maya. My name is Mason and we're so glad you're here today. If you've never met us before, I'm a worship pastor here on staff and Maya is a kids pastor. A kids pastor. So, uh we got the the just the young the young energy up here. Yeah. The young pastors on the team. That's what that is.
Yeah. So, uh we've had a crazy weekend. Um, so we just finished our students conference just wrapped up yesterday at our north campus. Yeah. Refined. Yeah, I've got the t-shirt on. Um, man, it was so incredible. Maya, you were there. You were What was your role this weekend? I was an admin floater. So, I also I sold merch and then I also just help with snacks, behind the scenes prep. Um, it was incredible.
It was awesome. I mean, I've got to be 100% honest. I've never seen our students worship the way that they worship this weekend. And it was just and I've been a part I've been around our student ministry for several years back to when I was a student. And it was just insane how hungry our students are. And um it was so cool. We had Pastor Jeffrey was there preaching the last session and he got to encourage our students and say like, "Hey, what is happening right now in students is going to affect the rest of our church." And so I want to encourage you if you're watching online and maybe you have a middle school student or a high school student and you're like, "Man, I didn't even realize that we've got a youth ministry, a student ministry, that would be a great place for them to get plugged in. We've got groups. Uh we meet on Wednesday nights u here at the South Campus." And so u you can go to beltway.org/bsm for info there.
Yeah. And what's even cooler is even to backtrack a little bit. Uh Ryan, Pastor Daniel Reinhardt, Pastor Molly, Pastor Zach, all the youth pastors were like, "Hey, we're going to take a charge and fast." And a lot of students fasted the week leading up to conference. And I think it made incredible. It made a huge difference. Huge difference. Yeah. The first night I was leading worship and I asked like, "Hey, show of hands, who all fasted something this week?" Usually 40 50%. Oh, it was it was insane. It was insane. And uh we we were a part of that. And um on Friday um I had lunch with the youth pastors and that we had Red Robin for lunch. Yeah. It was the first time we had eaten in five days and it was the greatest meal I've ever had. Yeah. You're like, you know what, Red Robin, you are the best. But so I think that made a huge difference in the conference and being able to be behind the scenes and just watching all these kids. I just stood in the back. I was kind of a monitor of the door making sure no one left. Uh but watching them all worship was the most incredible thing. It was such a powerful weekend.
It was awesome. Hey, we do want to keep something in front of you though. Um, and that is groups. So, we talked a little bit about groups for students, but there's groups for adults. There's groups for everybody. It community is so important. It changes everything. It's such a big deal. Um, especially here at Beltway, it's um it's part of the reason of like why we do what we do. It's just to get in community and and and do life with other people that are chasing after Jesus. And so, if you want information about groups, we're a bunch of groups are launching right now into early February. And you can go to beltway.org/groups. There's online groups, there's in-person groups, and so we'd love for you to check that out and and get involved. But I'm excited for this morning. We're in another week of our new uh sermon series called God is today. It's God is King of Kings. And so today, we get um to hear about just the worthiness of God. And we're about to jump into worship and and uh praise him for his worthiness.
Yeah. So excited. This uh Pastor Jeffy's on the mic today. And it's so exciting. He hasn't been on the mic. He hasn't been back in a while. And so he is just fired up, ready to teach, ready to bring God's word. And it is going to be another powerful morning. So it's going to be great. So we're so excited you're here. But, um we taught them a new song this weekend. Um and I would uh I would see, you know, who's all here from student conference, but they're all asleep. uh they'll be here second service probably. Listen church, I got to be a part of this uh BSM conference this weekend and wow, let me just tell you that God is doing something amazing in the young people of our church. I mean, he is stirring something up. It was beautiful. And not only are they passionately loving the Lord, they are ready. They're engaged. They're they're about to go out and shake up the big country. You're going to see it. You're going to see things popping up in their schools and in their homes and in their neighborhoods, on their sports teams, whatever it is they do, because they are ready to spread the kingdom. So, you be praying for them because they're going to lead us. And um I'm ready to go with them. Like, I'm not going to be as fast as them. Uhhuh. Because they got a lot of energy. But um but I'm going with them. I'm going to be right there with them. So, let's keep praying for them. Um, welcome to Beltway Park Church. And so, um, if you have been thinking about going on a mission trip, maybe you've already signed up, maybe you haven't thought of it at all, but now all of a sudden you're like, I don't know, you should come to the School of Missions. It's going to give you an opportunity to learn about all the mission trips, what's happening. Um, it's going to be so good. And if you've never done a mission trip before, I would just challenge you to ask the Lord if this is your year. I remember the first time I went on an overseas mission trip uh to Ethiopia. And goodness gracious, my whole little ethnosentric world was rocked upside down. Uh I realized that I was my little community was not the center of the universe and that God was doing amazing things all over the world. So, Father, the day is yours, Lord. As as we enter into the time of the preaching of your word, would you change us? Would you use your word to accomplish exactly what you intend for it to do as you send it forth? God, I've asked for your anointing on Pastor Jeffrey. Lord, we we just come before you as open books. You do what you want to do in us because you are the King of Kings. You are the Lord of Lords. All dominion and authority is yours. And so we bow before your throne this morning and let you take place on the on the throne of our hearts and accomplish your good plan. Jesus, thank you.
God, I know there's probably a reason for the pain, but I can't understand it. God, why have you taken everything away from me? Is this fire good? Should it feel like this? Why do I hate what I see in the mirror? Did you make a mistake when you made me? Father, why do I keep breaking over and over? God, if your hands are on me and you're molding me, how is that going to look? How's that going to feel? All I feel is this weight. Why are others stronger than me? Woe to him who quarrels with his maker, a pot among other earthn pots. For does the clay say to the one who formed it, "What are you making?" Or, "Why does your work have no handles?"
Good morning. Morning. Hey, welcome. My name is Jeffrey. I am the lead pastor here. And uh I have missed you. It feels like it's been a while since I've been here. I was gone last week. Uh I got to be at one of our church plants that we have partnered with. And I was thinking as I stood on the front row of that church plant last week. I was thinking how cool it is that you Beltway Park have played a role in planting not one, not two, not three, not four, but five churches since 2020. And we've you have helped plant churches in Lake Cities, Dallas. Uh you've helped plant a church in Tampa, Florida. You've helped plant a church in San Diego, California, Columbus, Ohio, and then the church I was at last week, History Makers in Miami, Florida. And it is incredible to see what God is doing through you. And I was standing there worshiping with them, and I thought, you know what? You need to see more of what's going on there. So, we got a little video we're going to show you from History Makers.

How awesome is that? Like it is they History Makers was planted and they started in February of 22 and they averaged over 1,400 people last year. I if you don't like live in the church world, you don't know that is a unicorn. Like it is the most incredible thing what God is doing there. Last week we we were walking up to church and uh and this this girl came out to me and she was like, "Oh, hey, Pastor Jeffrey." And I was like, "How did you recognize me?" And then I went in there and I was one of like uh I don't know, maybe a dozen people that look like me, like white people. There was no And I stuck out like a sore thumb. They were like, "You must be him." And so I said, "Hi." And then we went in there and it was an incredible thing to see what God is doing. I mean, that service alone, they had over 50 people say yes to Jesus for the first time. 50. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Let's try. Let's hold on. I'm going to rewind. That service alone, they had over 50 people say yes to Jesus. That is 50 people whose destiny was not what it should be that got changed. And what I love about our church, what I'm so proud of anytime I get to go talk about our church and talk about what God's doing in our church, it's it's very rarely like the preaching. I'm never like, "Y'all should hear the preacher. He is swell." It's not that. It is always our church has bought into big kingdom vision in a way that I've never seen another church do. Like there are people those people 50 people last week at History Makers Church in Miami, Florida. You're never going to meet them. like you you're the odds of you meeting one of them is minuscule and yet you because of your faithfulness in giving week in and week out you played a role in eternities changing last week like it's incredible and so I just from the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you and if you're a guest we don't always take time like this but but I just I I'm so proud of our church and I love what God is doing in our church and and it's not that we're that special it's just that we're people trying to take next steps with Jesus and we wrestle with those questions that that video played at the beginning and then we ended with Isaiah 45. But we wrestle with those questions like we wrestle with the question, am I enough? We wrestle with the question like do I have what it takes? The questions like am I was I made right? The questions like why are things happening in the way that they're happening? If you don't, I do. And here's the crazy part about those questions is we don't have to um teach them to our kids. We don't have to teach insecurities and questions about our life. That those come really naturally. I can remember being a 12-year-old looking in the mirror and seeing what what in my mind resembled a a modern-day Oompa Loompa. And uh I mean I was short and and round. And I remember even as a 12-year-old boy who should just be focused on Legos and video games, I remember looking in the mirror and beginning to go, God, why am I like this? Like, why can't I be more like that guy? Why Why am I the way that I am? And then I got older and I started playing sports. And this is going to shock you. I know. Uh I wasn't great. And I we went to a school that had flag football. So, I didn't do that cuz I wanted to have friends. And so, we played we played basketball and uh all my friends were so much better than me. They were all on varsity and I was on JV. And I remember thinking, God, why can't I just be like a little taller? I'm not asking like I I don't need like 65, but you know, six feet would be swell. Why am I not more athletic? Why can't I be a little more like that? And then I got older and and everyone that's older than high school age, you know that all those insecurities and questions, they go away as you get older, right? You start to you're confident in who you are all the time. Everything's great. No, you get older and the questions just change. It's just like why why does this person always get that job opportunity and here I sit just just doing the same thing every day and I can't like get ahead. See, the questions as we get older and and as you get out of like the high school age, the questions are less about sports and stuff like that. They're more like like I want a spouse, God, and I felt like that was going to happen and here I sit and everyone around me is getting married and here I'm not. Or I I've been begging you, God, to to have a child and start a family and and every person I look at somehow they get magically pregnant all the time and we cannot. God, why will this door not open? Why am I the way that I am? These these questions just they're constant in our lives. And we live in a culture that quietly trains us to doubt almost everything about our life. Here's the reality for you and I. Culture is not helping us be more secure. Culture is not helping us be more confident in who we are. Everything that we see in culture, from commercials to movies to TV, everything we see in our culture is shouting at us, "Hey, you know what? You're not enough. You don't have what it takes. you need this. That's not working in your life. Here, let me show you the answer. Everything in our culture gives us insecurities and doubts and questions all the time, which which inevitably gets us to the place that we begin to go, "Do I trust God?" Like, I know this is church, so we're supposed to say, "Yes, I trust God. Love you. God, trust you." But really, really, do you trust God? Do I? And I think if we peel back the from from the surface level Christianity that it's easy for us to like live in, if we really begin to peel back and ask that question honestly of our soul, all those questions that video hit, they're real questions. And that video ending with this is is pretty apt. Woe to him who strives with him who formed him, a pot among earth and pots. Does the clay say to him who forms it, what are you making or your work has no handles? I get it. I get being the clay looking at the potter going, "Hey, are you sure?" And we can read Isaiah 45. Probably every time I've read Isaiah 45 before this week, I read it as like this is going to be vulnerable for like a pastor to say sometimes I still view God this way, but I've always read Isaiah 45 as God kind of mad at me. Like, hey, what's wrong with you? Why Why do you You're clay. Why are you looking at I'm the potter. You're clay. Who Who are you to look at me and ask me questions? And this week I read it and it was like the Holy Spirit opened it up in a new way that Isaiah 45 is reminding us who we are and who God is supposed to be in our lives. It's not God angry. It's an invitation. And we can wrestle sometimes with God being God. We're good with God being savior. Like we like the idea of God being the one who saves. We're good with God being comforter whenever we need comfort. or we're good with God being provider whenever we need him to be provider, healer whenever he needs to be healer. But in our heads and in our hearts and in our souls, we can often wrestle with God actually being God in our lives. What if our questions and anxieties that we face aren't actually about uncertainty, but they're about submission? What if the reason that we're asking all these questions all the time is because we've kind of gotten like our lives out of order? What if it's because we don't view God in the way that we're supposed to view God? What if it's because we view God as as a lot of things but not king? We view him in a lot of ways but not as not just king, king of kings. Us shifting the way we view God is is tantamount. It is unbelievably important if we're going to live the life that he has for us. Submitting to the King of Kings is what brings about freedom and purpose in our lives. It is only in learning how to submit our lives to someone else, to the King, that we will live the life that God has for us. And we can be confident in doing that because of a passage of scripture we're going to look at right now in Revelation 19. So, if you will grab a Bible, we're going to camp out in Revelation 19. means the very so flip your Bible over and then turn three chapters. It is three chapters from the end of the Bible. If you are at a physical campus and you don't have a Bible, there's one around you. Online campus, there's one right there on the screen. Let me catch you up though because when we read scripture, it is really important for us to understand the context of what was written, why it was written, and who it was written to. So, Revelation 19, the church is in a wild spot. Okay. So, this is obviously the last book in the Bible and it is written um to a church in turmoil. Things are difficult at this point in time. About 30 years before Revelation is written, uh Rome and therefore the world is being led by a guy named Nero. Say Nero. Good. I just want to make sure you're awake. Okay. So, Nero, he uh he is leading Rome and he is leading the world and he is not a nice fella. Okay? He is bad. That's the most church appropriate word for Nero. Here, here's how bad Nero is. Most historians, there's a huge fire that that burns most of Rome down. And historians, specifically the historian Tacitus, who is not a like Christian historian, he and most other historians believe that Nero actually started the fire and then blames the fire on Christians. It is the first that we know of like state sponsored persecution of Christians. And Nero does that. He's he's a bad enough guy. He he is a he he demands like to be the the emperor, the king that that's you have to submit your whole life to him. if you don't. He would torture them with animals. He would kill them. He would put them on stakes in his garden and light Christians on fire to light up his dinner parties. That's Nero. That's what is happening in the church. And then you fast forward about 30 years and you've got another guy leading leading Rome and therefore leading the world, a guy named Domitian. And so it is under Nero that most like early church history will tell us that that is when both Peter and Paul are killed for their faith. And now Domitian is leading Rome and therefore leading the world and he is just as bad a guy as Nero is. And in this time, the apostle John gets exiled to Patmos, which is where he then writes the book of Revelation. And so it's in the midst of this turmoil, this chaos. I mean, like I gave you some wicked details just then. The church is asking questions like Jesus said all this stuff. The apostles said all this stuff and things are going so bad. Things are difficult. We're anxious to live. They were full of questions. And it's in the midst of that that John like God gives John not just a not just a word of encouragement to the church. God gives John a vision of his very self that was going to change the way they looked at their present circumstances. We see this in Revelation 19 starting in verse 11. Then I saw heaven open and behold a white horse. The one sitting on it is called faithful and true. And in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire and on his head are many diadems. And he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood. And the name by which he is called is the word of God. And the armies of heaven arrayed in fine linen, white and pure were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. And he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread on the wine press of the wrath of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty on his robe and on his thigh he has a name written king of kings and lord of lords. That's a crazy picture of Jesus. Like be honest, usually when we think about Jesus, it is not like that. We think of like a a you know kind of Caucasian Jesus, long beautiful hair, perfect teeth in a time when, let's be honest, people didn't have perfect teeth. He looked like he has a a manny petty before that was a thing. Like Jesus, we get this real cleaned up, sanitized version of Jesus. And then you read the Revelation 19 Jesus, you're like, "Oh, that's different." And the image opens up, John, John's vision opens up, the heavens open, and we see Jesus on a white horse. We think that's great. Jesus on a pony. Sweet. No, this is this is an important part of the vision that John has. See, in this time, kings and leaders, they they would ride donkeys. We see Jesus actually ride on a donkey in the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. And that that is a normal like way that kings and leaders would move in times of peace. And then when they went to war, kings and generals, they if they were good kings and generals, they would lead their people into battle on a horse, which is also awesome. Now, think the church at this point, they feel like they are in war. They feel like things are difficult. And so Jesus is on a horse, but no, no, that's even even greater. He's on a white horse. You know who rode white horses? The winners. The people that rode white horses were the ones that already won the victory. And when John's vision opens up, the heavens open and there is Jesus riding on a white horse. You know what that meant? He won. He He won the victory. They would not have seen that as a as a general that like was preparing for battle. They would see that as a general, a king that won the battle already. What a beautiful image of Jesus. And then John's like, "Okay, well, God to John is like,"Okay, you got the white horse. That's a really important part, but let me let me double down on it in who he is. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems. Crowns. You know how many crowns kings wore? One. You know why? That was their kingdom. They wore the crown of their kingdom. And then in this image, this vision that John has of Jesus, Jesus is crowned with many crowns. See, a king whenever he would he would defeat another kingdom, that king would then take the the crown from the other king and put it on his head. He was then over this kingdom. So when a king would defeat another kingdom in battle, he would take the crown symbolizing authority, power, influence. That was now his kingdom. When John's vision is seen in Revelation 19 and he has many crowns on his head, it is because he has defeated many kingdoms. It is it is this image of okay, he's on the horse. He's the victorious king. Oh, also he's defeated all these kingdoms. And then John goes on his robe and on his thigh he has a name written king of kings and lord of lords. This would have been scandalous under the time of Nero and Domitian. King of Kings on his thigh and on his robe, Lord of Lords. And we we struggle with the image of King because in the modern time, we don't really see kings. We don't have kings. That's not our world. And I was thinking this week like what's a good way to explain this? And I went to basketball. Okay, so like LeBron James is known as King James. Okay, that's wrong. Okay, that's false. That is it's heresy. Okay. The king is who? Michael Jordan, of course. Yeah. It's not Wilt. I mean, awesome. I'm too young for that. Like, it's not Wilt. It wasn't It wasn't Magic Johnson. Like, it's it's Jordan. He's the greatest. Like, he did things that no human had ever done on a basketball court. Like, and he was ruthless about it. I I loved Kobe. You know, I've got thoughts about LeBron, but like Jordan is Jordan's the goat. And then you know what? He had somebody over him. Phil Jackson was the coach of the Chicago Bulls for most of the time. And he is the greatest coach of all time. Like Jordan and then Phil Jackson. And then Phil Jackson had a boss. Somebody owned the Chicago Bulls. He could get fired or hired based on this guy. And then that guy had a boss. The guy who ran the NBA was a guy named David Stern. And he oversaw the whole NBA. David Stern had a boss. Michael Jordan's the greatest basketball player ever. Five layers down in importance and authority. This image of King of Kings and Lord of Lords is there is no hierarchy. The image King of Kings and Lord of Lords is he's the endgame. There's no one above him. There is no one. We King of Kings, Lord of Lords, on his thigh and on his robe is a declaration that he is the one in charge. No one tells him what to do. No one determines what he does. No one is over him. No one gets to change his will. No one has the power or authority over him. King of kings and lord of lords is a declaration that it is him and only him. that we get this vision from John of a victorious Jesus riding on the horse, white horse and then crowned with many crowns, king of kings and lord of lords. It is a unbelievable declaration of the power and wonder of our God. It points us to the reality that like everything around us may be chaos. He's king of kings and lord of lords. It would have been a reminder for this church in the midst of chaos and questions. He's still God and he's got it under control. He's that powerful. If that's the case, why do you and I, or at least me, often struggle to make him king in my life if he's that king? Why is it that I struggle to live my life submitted to his will? There's a couple of reasons. We often struggle with God as king because our experiences with broken human authority have shaped our expectations. We struggle to view God as king and a good king because we've watched bad leaders over us fail us. People in positions of authority abuse that authority. people who who should have done one thing and didn't do the thing that they were supposed to do. We can wrestle with fully submitting our lives to God because we've watched people that were over us be bad at what they're supposed to do. Which takes us back to Isaiah. Woe to him who strives with him who formed him a pot among earth and pots. Does the clay say to him who forms it, what are you making or your work has no handles? We are clay. That boss over you who was a bad trash boss. Clay, the person in the position of authority that you expected to do one thing and did something else. Clay, the broken human leaders. Clay, there is one potter. God. Humans will let you down time and time again. But who is the clay to tell the potter? Your work has no handles. That's not the only reason we struggle with with trusting God and submitting our lives to God as king. We far too often in my life, God doesn't do what I want him to do in the manner that I want him to do it. Often what he does is different and we struggle with God as king when his will clashes with our own. I love it when God does what I want him to do in the way I want him to. It's my favorite when he does exactly what I think in the way that I think he should do it. It's awesome. We we love when God heals in the way that we wanted him to heal or provides in the way that we wanted him to provide. Is he still king whenever he doesn't? Is he still king whenever his will doesn't look like my will? Whenever that thing we've been asking for doesn't happen in the timeline that we wanted it to. Whenever provision happens differently. whenever things and questions arise, which is why that passage in Revelation 19 matters so much for us because the church at this point in time would have been racked with questions. God, is this how this is supposed to be? Are you still good? I'm My family is getting killed because they said they're Christians. Is this really the way this is going to look? Has evil won? And then that image, the vision of Jesus as the victorious king would have shifted their perspective, hear me, from all this mess, and it was a mess to, "Oh yeah, but my God." For some of us, we get caught so much looking at the mess and the muck and the mire of our lives that we forget who our God is. And the only reason we can be confident in submitting to God as king is because of who he is. If he is a God that we can fashion with our own hands, then he is a really weak God. Instead, he is on the white horse, a victorious king, king of kings and lord of lords. Therefore, we can submit to him and find freedom and purpose in our life. I mean that image of Jesus, the power, the authority, the wonder. And then we get to verses like, "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?" We connect Revelation 19 to Romans 8, and we're like, "Let's go. If that's who my God is and he is for me, then who in the world could ever be against me?" We can submit our lives not because of who we are, but because of who he is. Submission is not oppression. It's not it's not just having to lay our life down for no reason. It's alignment with how things are supposed to be. So, how how then do we get to the place that we live our lives submitted to him? How can I not be clay looking at the potter going, "Hey, what are you doing?" It's it's three things. It is salvation which is the door. It is submission which is the I mean submission and surrender which is kind of the way we walk it out. And it's freedom which is the fruit we get to walk in. Salvation starts submission starts with salvation. If we're going to live lives submitted to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, we only do it because we've said yes to him. Scripture says, "Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart
That God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with for with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame."
A life submitted to him begins by saying yes to him. And hear me. We If you've been at Beltway very long, you know almost every week we're going to talk about finding Jesus and saying yes to Jesus. If you've never said yes to him, you will not have the life you want. Like I I want you to.
People ask all the time like why do you do what you do? What is why do you like being a pastor? And it's twofold. I desperately want people to know Jesus because I know not only is it you get to spend eternity with him, not separated from him, but it's because I know second reason is I want you to know who you are and the life that God has for you. If you've never said yes to him, don't leave today before doing that. It is the only way to find freedom and life. You will never find it outside of him. And I desperately want you to know him and know his purpose and his plan in your life.
If we're going to submit our lives to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, it begins with salvation. And what's beautiful, what I love about our God is the king provided what he required: an atoning sacrifice. See, scripture tells us that the wages of sin, the cost of sin, which every human being has done, if you're in here, if you're at our north campus, if you're online, you just like everyone before you not named Jesus Christ, has sinned. And scripture tells us there is a cost to that sin. And that cost to the sin is death. And so, forever, what happened is an innocent animal died so that people could be saved. And God in his grace and his mercy gave us the very thing we needed to find the life that he has. And he sent his son to this earth. That this this baby that we remembered when we talked at Christmas, not just about presents and parties, when we talked about Jesus, that baby had a destiny from the moment it was born. Think about that. And that destiny was to go die a death that was the required sacrifice for you and me. That's a beautiful God that he would love you and I enough to send Jesus to the cross to pay that price for sins so that you and I could have life and have it according to Jesus's own words: have life and have it in abundance.
If we're going to live a life submitted to him, it begins by saying yes to him. But then it continues, submission requires total surrender, not partial. We live in a culture, especially us as Texans, we we live in a culture, in a society that's like, you know what, you can do this. Pull yourself up by your bootsteps. You got it. Can I tell you something? You don't. I don't. You weren't made to. That's [clears throat] not the way this was supposed to look. That was not God's design. In the middle of the upside down world that we live in, if we're gonna find freedom and life and hope and purpose, it's going to be because we give up control. Does that make sense? No. Tons of what we believe doesn't make sense. That doesn't mean it's not true. We have to be totally completely surrendered.
I heard it said this week. I read a story about a guy named Dr. Adrian Rogers and he had traveled on a mission trip to Romania and he's talking to his interpreter and they're just talking throughout the trip and and Dr. Rogers asked this interpreter. He goes, "Hey, uh, tell me what you think about American Christians." And the guy goes, "You don't want to know that." Which then makes us curious folk like, "Oh yeah, I do." If you ever want to be really humbled and you travel like anywhere outside of our Bible belt area, ask what people think about Christians. It's not great. And he's asked the question, "What do you think about Christians?" And then Dr. Rogers keeps pressing him like, "No, no, really, tell me." And he says, "Okay, you're not going to like my answer. I don't think you Americans understand what Christianity is all about." Back in the 1960s, you started to use the word commitment to describe your relationship with Christ. However, anytime a word comes into usage, another word goes into disuse. Until the 1960s, you Americans talked about surrender to Christ. Surrender means giving up control, turning over all to the master, Jesus. By changing the word to commitment, your relationship with Christ became something you do, and therefore, you're able to keep control. Surrender means giving up all rights to oneself. You Americans don't like to do that. Instead, you make a commitment. Ouch.
If we're going to live lives surrendered, it means all of us. It means, "I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. I appeal to you, brothers, to give it all. And do not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." That image to the very church that would then be persecuted by Nero and Domitian. That image is everything. Have you given it all? Surrender means every bit of me. It means your marriage, his money, his hobbies, his friendships, his decisions you make, his. If we're going to live life surrendered, we don't get to decide what goes into that surrender and what doesn't. That image in Romans of of us laying our bodies on an altar. You don't lay your leg on an altar and nothing else. It doesn't work. A sacrifice was everything. If we're going to surrender our lives, if we're going to submit our lives to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, who is worthy, it means we have to give it all. If we try to partially do it, when we choose partial surrender because it feels easier, we forfeit the freedom that comes from fully yielding to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. You don't partially get married. You're married or you're not. You don't partially go on a diet, although some of us try. You don't partially break the law. You either break it or you don't. We don't partially get to submit our lives. He gets it all. If we want the [music] life that comes from submitting to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, it means I hold nothing back. Surrender and submission leads to freedom and life. [snorts] Do you want that? If so, that's what it looks like. That's what it requires.
Now, the Lord is spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is, there's freedom. And we all with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed in the same image from one degree of glory to another. Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. I so desperately want our church to be known by the way we walk free. I want us to be known by the way we walk out the purposes that God has for us. I want us to be known by the way that God blesses us with his presence. And all of that requires a life submitted to the King of Kings. Not halfway, not partially. It requires me giving him my all. All that I am, all that you are. And when we do that, we'll find blessing. And I unashamedly like being blessed and want more of that blessing.
Let's pray. God, I thank you for who you are. And I thank you for [sighs] your majesty. When I read Revelation 19, it is awe-inspiring that you are that God. Would our response be appropriate for who you are? Would we not hold anything back? If we've never said [music] yes to you, would today be the day we do that? We thank you that what you have for each of us is far greater than even what we could imagine. Give us the grace today to submit fresh and new to you. It's in your name we pray. Amen.

I'm going to read Revelation 19 again as we get into it because this view of God should definitely cause us to worship. "Then I saw heaven open, and behold a white horse. The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. You don't have to tell anyone what it is, but raise your hand. If you're around one of these people, will you just appropriately put your hand on them? And I thank you that you don't need us to tell everyone around us right now what's going on for you to know. So God, in each of these circumstances, [music] each of these situations, each of these places with questions, God, I ask that [music] you would be near. Sometimes your will doesn't align with our will, and that's always a wrestle, but your nearness still changes things. [music] So God, I ask that you would be near. Would you be present? Would you be close? We ask for you to move in each of these, every person that raised their hand, ask that you move in their lives. And God, you tell us to ask. So we [music] ask that you move soon, fast. Would you provide? Would you heal? Would you comfort? Would you be who you are? It's in your name we pray. Amen.

Uh, so sometimes when we worship, we do it out of a place of gratitude for what God has done. Sometimes when we worship, we do it out of out of gratitude for what God will do. And then he scripture tells us that he is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. And because he has done, we believe that he is doing and that we believe that he will continue to do. It is who he is. And so even if we're in the season of waiting, [music] even in we're in the season of questions, even if we're in the season of going, "Why hasn't it happened?" Yet, we can still declare gratitude for a God who has done, is doing, and will do, and believe in faith and hope that he will continue. So, let's worship together.
