A good byte scan starts with having good scans of the arches before going to the byte scan page. Remember to use the three shape official scan strategies for the upper and lower jaws, both for quadrants and full arches.
Scan strategies consist of three swipes for both quadrants and full arches: occlusal, lingual, and buccal for the lower arch, and occlusal, buccal, palatal for the upper arch. Following the scan strategies ensures that a scan has high quality and precision.
Furthermore, to obtain the best results, always avoid artifacts on the molar surface. These may result from soft tissue (lips, cheek, tongue) being scanned onto the teeth. You can fix that by retracting the soft tissue from the teeth while scanning, using, for example, a dental mirror. Areas like these may interfere with a good bite scan and therefore compromise the occlusion.
Avoid excess soft tissue at the back. This may be to the distal of the last molars, or it may be large portions of sulcus to the cheek. If you scan larger areas of soft tissue, for example, sulcus distal of the last tooth, the mouth bottom, or cheek, remember to use the trim tool to clean up the scan. Clicking the "all patches" button will remove the outlying areas.
Finally, avoid bubbles of saliva being scanned onto the occlusal surface. Dry the teeth before scanning. Check the 2D live stream to see if there's a lot of white spots. Thick saliva and air bubbles will result in incorrect scanning of the molar surface. If you should accidentally scan one or more of these aforementioned artifacts, simply trim away the artifacts and rescan that area.
Ask the patient to open their mouth. Position the scanner between the first and second molar on the buccal side. Pull out the cheek a bit with the scanner tip. Not touching sensitive gingiva will increase patient comfort. Align the scan area to cover 50/50 of the upper and lower teeth. Ask the patient to bite in centric occlusion. Start the scanner. The scanner tip will hold out the cheek. After a few clicks, slowly move out the tip while scanning. Keep scanning until both arches snap into position. Scan three to four teeth for perfect alignment, even if the scan snaps together earlier. For a full arch case, repeat the procedure on the opposite side. Make sure that the patient gets the same bite position again.
