People Buy Your Story, Not Your Product

Taking a big jet back to LA, or was that Sundance? There's uh, levels to life. There's levels to jets. This one has a bed and 1100 square ft.

People have a false impression that if you are logical, then you'll make a lot of money. It's not logic that makes money. Humans are not logical. Look around. Does this world look logical? So, what do people respond to? Storytelling. Telling a story. That's why I've been doing social media marketing since 2009. Showing the behind the scenes of my life, weaving a story of who I am as a personal brand. Doesn't resonate with everybody. Some people will hate it, but some people will love it. And you only need a thousand loyal fans to make money. You don't need a thousand to 10,000 loyal fans, loyal customers for you to make seven, eight, even nine figures.

So ask yourself, if I went to your website right now, if I went to your Instagram right now, if I went to your TikTok, are you telling a story that's fascinating to the outside world? Is it fascinating to people who don't know you? It's all a story, man. Humans, for example, if you logically show a spreadsheet and say, "Here's why you should buy my product," versus just a picture or a video, scientists have found that an image is understood and processed 60,000 times faster than your spreadsheet. So, if you can, a lot of people's marketing, a lot of people's website is the logical reason to buy from them. But then you look at Nike. Nike just sold a transformational story. Michael Jordan, LeBron J, they showed all these athletes and said they didn't even have to say, "You can be like them." It was understood in the unconscious mind. Good marketers speak to the unconscious. Bad marketers speak to the conscious mind. You got to become an unconscious mind person. And that's just storytelling.

I, when I'm giving a conference, if I'm at a speaking at a conference, giving a keynote or whatever, there's thousands of people. I spoke to 25,000 people live. If I feel like I'm losing the crowd, I say, "Let me tell you a crazy story." And everybody looks up from their phone. Hey, humans are built with this interest in stories and storytelling. So, do your Facebook ads, your YouTube ads have great stories, or are they just essentially you pitching? Are you showing the behind the scenes of your life on your personal brand, or are you just posting formal posts? None of that works anymore. It never really worked, by the way. I've been doing this since almost 16 years. It never worked. It really doesn't work now 'cause the average person's seeing 13,000 images and ads a day. It's a crazy number. People have to Google it. They don't even believe me. Average human seeing 13,000 ads, social media posts per day. It's a mind-blowing number. How do you rise above that? Almost none of those 10 to 13,000 ads people see per day, images they see, are good storytelling. It's just like Netflix or movies. Most of the movies are boring, and then once in a while you bump into an amazing storyteller, an amazing movie on Netflix or at the theater, and all of a sudden you're mesmerized, and you're telling all your friends, "Go see this movie." That's the best marketing, word of mouth.

Your story, you, if you can weave a story. Like, I'll give you an example. You know, I'm I'm laying on a bed in a private jet. And some people might say that and say, "Oh, like this guy, whatever." People don't like that. I might not have liked it if I saw it, but it's part of a story. When I graduated high school, sleeping on a couch that was smaller than this in a mobile home in Clayton, North Carolina. You know, I did manual labor for 4 years on a farm. And this wasn't given to me. This wasn't handed to me. I, like, I don't always fly private, but when I do, I like the storytelling that I even tell myself. Hey, Ty. Not bad. You know, I'm not big. I don't walk around complimenting myself all the time. It's something like, not bad. You went from a mobile home. You went from, I had a 400 sq ft apartment at one point, and now you're on a. This is 1100 sq ft Challenger 850. It's not the jet that's the important part. It's the story behind the jet.

I shoot videos and ads for my farm. There is down to earth with a tractor, with a horse. There's no fancy stuff there, but it's still a story. People will not remember anything about your corporate name. People get all into, "What's the best logo?" Logos are unimportant unless they reinforce a story. Like Apple has a logo with a little apple with a bite taken out of it. And that's part of the story of Apple. The simplicity. That logo represents simplicity, which is what Steve Jobs came up with with his design after he went to India and meditated with the gurus, and he came back and he said, "I've got a new story, which is how to make simple tools for people." That's the, and that became the first trillion-dollar company in history.

But what separates the people in this world is their ability to market their products, their social media, their personal brand, their corporate brand with amazing storytelling. Hire great storytellers to work inside your company. The best of the best. Don't be cheap. Great copywriters, great video editors, people who can tell story visually, great graphic designers. Now, if you don't have that ability, if you're making money, but you realize your marketing storytelling is not amazing, text me. I, I carry two phones with me, personal and a business one. I check them every day. My assistant sometimes checks them, too, but I check my business phone. Text or WhatsApp me to this number and just say story. That's all I need to. Storytelling. Sorry. Just text me the keyword storytelling. You can WhatsApp it, can text it, and a little bit about your situation, and I'll send you some stuff or we can talk back and forth. I take 10, 20 minutes a day to text back and forth with people who text this number right here. Okay? I'll have them pop it up on the screen.

So, we're about to land here back to LA. Got the networking party. That's all part of a story, too. Every part of my brand has been trying to weave a story. And every time I do it well, I make a lot of money. And every time I do it poorly, I make no money. It's, it's binary. Life is binary. Making money is very binary. A few people make almost all the money. And that, in many, there's multiple reasons, but in great part, that's because we never were taught that storytelling is so important. We're taught, "Oh, that's for, you know, Steven Spielberg making movies, story tell," or somebody writing a Harry Potter book. No, storytelling is business. It is money. It is the source of money in your pocket, in your bank account to grow your life, your legacy, your family, all the things you want to do. If you really get back back to it, it's going to be how well you tell a story to to staff. You want good people to work for you. Can you tell a story that appeals to people? Most employees, employers cannot do that. Can you have marketing? Does the product itself tell a story?

Master psychology and storytelling. Text me. We'll talk on text. Just put the word storytelling, and then put a little about yourself, revenue, what you sell it, and I, and I can uh, peek at your website or whatever, give you a few tips right here.
