Breaking Down Young LeBron vs. “Old” LeBron | Gilbert Arenas & Paul George

Podcast P with Paul George4:17

So Gil, I I want to talk about LeBron with you. And I know you had some incredible matchups with him. And you caught him, you know, early in his career, in the early 2000s. And he's still playing at a high level, as we saw the other night. He's still jumping out the gym, doing stuff that otherwise, we, we really haven't seen anybody, you know, do this at this age. Uh, in LeBron. And I just want to know, like, what you see as the major differences of LeBron's game when you were playing against him and now, what you get to watch against guys like P.

He was one of those players. I, smart, right? Very smart. So smart that he plays to his strengths, never his weaknesses, right? So when you're trying to say he's not a one-on-one guy, he's not this, he knows that's not his skill. He's not going to try to do it, right? He's going to play to his perfection, right? And that's hard to do. Like, you have to consciously be thinking about, like, I'm not going to be suckered into, you know, I'm not like Ben Tim. I'm not going to be suckered into just shoot jump shots, cuz just to prove a point, right? And, you know, that's what LeBron mastered. That I'm just going to stick with what I'm great at, and I'm going to perfect it. I'm going to get smarter, wiser. And, you know, if y'all think he's fast now, what do you think he? I tell people that all the time. What do you think what was coming down the lane then, right? That's if you really think about it, right? Really, when he gets up right now, like, okay, this is, this is 38, 30. What do you think 21, 22 is looking like, man? Hilarious. Worse. You saw the worst of it more than I did. But I tell, like, even the Rooks, they be looking in awe, like, damn, like, you see that? I'll be like, did I see that, man? That was nothing the way he used to do, man. Like, he laid that up like he was.

I had, you know, we playing against the young, non-experienced, um, you know, he came in in as a shooting guard. Mhm. Right? So he came in as a shooting guard. Getting, oh, I torched him out him at shooting guard. Then he grew. Yeah. Right? I remember in the playoff and, um, no, that first year, he's Antoine got him, right? And then we came into the playoffs and like, he's, you know, posing up and he's taller than Antoine. And I had to, was a coach, I think he's, did he grow this [ __ ] grow? That was like, they was like, I don't think so. And I was like, man, he bigger than them dudes now, man. And then we was like, put Jared on him. So we had to put Jared Jeff on him. Jared, 6'11". So we tried. I mean, we tried everything. Like, it was just one of those. And you can just see it, like, yeah, if we gonna get him, we got to get him now because the smarter he gets, the stronger he gets, we ain't gonna get past him in the playoffs, man. Now it was just, you can see the right was on the wall. Like, we was better than them, right? He just outsmarted us. Mhm.

And a followup to that, P shared a story. I think it was like the second or third episode where there was a possibility where Dante Jones was trying to get you to go to Cleveland. Yeah. So he was basically playing the middleman to to because I almost got traded to Cleveland after Indiana. The deal was damn near done. Indiana pulled out. Basically like, we not going to trade him to the same division. They pulled out, canceled the trade. Then they sent me to Oklahoma. But the deal was damn near done to bring me to Cleveland. Uh, with Bron. That would have been crazy. Yeah, it would have been crazy.
