Recently unearthed remnants of a wooden vessel and other artifacts could be the first discovery of links to the Malacca Sultanate. Archaeology buff Doctor Dionysius S. K. Sharma said the vessel is believed to be linked to the last ruler of Malacca, Sultan Mahmoud Shah, who reigned from 1488 to 1511 A.D.
He said the remnants have been sent to the United States to determine the actual age of the timber through laboratory tests. Dionysius said the tests are crucial to verify if the vessel was carrying the cargo of foreign vessels or transporting items from the Malacca Sultanate.
He said more artifacts could be unearthed if Pula Malanka is properly scoured and excavation done with proper planning. Dionysius is currently working closely with the National Heritage Department and Malacca Museum Corporation to unearth tangible artifacts relating to the Sultanate.
