Basketball is a contact sport in which athletes sustain many different types of injuries, from ACL tears to finger injuries to bloody noses. This is a sport where we recommend at least one glove is always on. Have the athlete keep pressure on the nose. CWS is offered to stop the bleeding. The head is held forward slightly, and the bridge of the nose is pinched to stop the bleeding. Nose plugs, blood clot, or other measures can be used to help stop the bleeding.

Leading if the athlete is to return to play, all the blood must be removed from the body and uniform. Spray saline or hydrogen peroxide works well. The sports PT now completes a head-to-toe exam and focuses on the face to assess for further injury. Think about what your decision points would be in allowing this athlete to return to play.
