Forgiveness is a form of freedom. When we carry a hurt of past wrongs, even when those were legitimate wrongs, we burden ourselves. Part of our faith in Hashem is that there is divine justice.
I don't have to be the parole officer who checks up on the case of this person who wronged me to make sure that they're getting their divine comeuppance. It's exhausting. It's heavy. It weighs me down.
Another thing it does is it takes me away from my own life. Imagine if, on any level, even subconsciously, I'm keeping tabs on someone because I have a grudge against them. So I'm spending mental energy on keeping track of their life instead of on my own life. So it divorces me from my true self, the resentment.
