PFW Challenge Day 14: How to Earth in Winter

So what about earthing in the winter? If you're like me and you recognize the benefits of earthing, it is super easy to earth in the warmer months of the year. All I have to do is step outside into my backyard with my bare feet, and I do that all the time. So it's very easy for me to get at least an hour of earthing in every single day in the summer. As opposed to the winter, where it's not as easy to touch bare skin to the cold Earth, to the snow. So is earthing in the winter still possible? Yes, it is, and here are some of the reason, or some of the things that you can do.

But before I go into how you can earth in the winter, for those of you who aren't aware, I want to explain a little bit about why earthing is important. So first and foremost, to understand why earthing is important, we have to have a basic understanding of our body and its need for charge, I call it, or voltage. Um, from a very, very basic perspective, we're full of this, this electricity and this electrical charge that is negative if you were to measure it. So what does that mean? Uh, you know, going back to basic chemistry, it basically means that we're just chalk full of electrons, both inside of the cells, outside of the cells; we're just really this reservoir of electrons. And so we have to maintain that reservoir. That reservoir gets depleted because those electrons can act as antioxidants; those electrons um go through the electron transport chain in mitochondria to make things like ATP and water for us. So if we're continually using up this electron reservoir, we have to be able to replete it. Basically, we're designed to be plugged in or connected to the Earth's surface all the time.

And in fact, think about a thousand years ago; we never, we would always be plugged into the Earth in some capacity or the other. Natural stone conducts the uh the Earth's electrons, and so does um natural animal hide. So in all capacities, we would actually be connected to the Earth, and the earth's surface is an infinite supply of electrons that we can pull into our bodies to maintain this beautiful electron-rich body that we have when we touch bare skin to the Earth. And so amazing, right, that we are actually full of electrons? We need these electrons to maintain our health, to maintain optimum mitochondrial function, and then we have an infinite reservoir of them if we simply touch bare skin to Earth's surface.

Now let's talk a little bit about the details around that, because there's a lot of surfaces that are conductive: grass and sand and being in water and dirt and even with dead leaves. And any natural Earth surface conducts electrons. There's a couple of um exceptions, and one of them is dead wood; wood that no longer has its water in it that is not conductive. So if you're on a wooden deck, that's not necessarily going to be conductive. Other things that are not conductive are asphalt, so that black top asphalt is not conductive; it does not allow Earth's electrons to flow through. However, concrete is a natural stone, is so you condu, you can conduct through concrete; summer, fall, spring, winter, it doesn't matter; that's all conductive. Also, you don't actually have to touch the Earth itself; you can touch things that are um have their roots into the Earth and that allow uh that actually get Earth's charge into them as well. So, for example, trees and bushes and plants, all of those are also pulling Earth's electrons into themselves, and then when we touch them, we pull those electrons into us. And so we can touch any little bit of nature possible, um any any Earth's surface or any uh living plant that's in the earth; we're able to conduct the electrons into us to reestablish our healthy electron-rich bodies.

And so how can we do that in the colder months? Well, I will stand barefoot in the snow, probably for 30 or 60 seconds every single morning. I love it; in fact, I love it so much that I also do a little bit of cold therapy with it. While I'm getting cold on the bottoms of my feet, I also pick up a snowball and get cold in my hands, and I actually oftentimes smash that snowball to my forehead. And that's because all of those skin surfaces, from my forehead to my the palms of my hands and the soles of my feet, all of them contain the glabrous skin that I discussed in the uh cold face plunging video about how it's important to get the forehead under the water because that skin has a lot of cold receptors. So I do a little mini cold, cold exposure, if you will, being outside and um touching the the snow with my feet and hands and forehead while I'm skygazing at sunrise. Okay, but I digress, right? So I can get earthing that way, right? But that's not a way to get a lot; I can't touch the snow for a very long time; like my feet tolerate maybe 30, 60, 90 seconds, up to 2 minutes, um but after that it's like, okay, no thank you.

So what are some alternatives? Well, some alternatives are different earthing and grounding shoes. So again, in the resources you'll see all of my recommendations that I've vetted for different earthing and grounding shoes. Um, you can also get a uh gloves that are conductive. So to have conductive material, it simply means it needs to be able to pull those electrons U basically from the earth, go into the material, and then ultimately they'll come to you. And so there's gloves that I love that are conductive; socks that are conductive. So maybe it's not snowy where you live, but it's just cold, but you can still go outside and stand on the earth um in just socks, so you can get some conductive socks that can do that as well. I also like um to utilize um different earthing rods as well. So there's walking sticks, if you will, that actually also are conductive, so either copper or silver based walking sticks. I have clients who simply actually have a copper rod that they've driven into the Earth, and they actually run a copper wire from it, and then that copper wire is flowing the electrons into them. So copper rod in the earth, copper wire, and then they just hold it. And you don't have to be outside to do this; I've actually had people who will um do that outside of a window and then hold on to that wire and get charged that way.

And if that kind of sounds a little much, a little bit too DIY for you, um I, you have the ability, or was it DIY? If that's too DIY for you, then you have the ability to also use um earthing or grounding mats and products. And I'm going to introduce you to the only company that I ever recommend for this anymore; it's a company called Intuition Physician. And this physician, Dr. Laura Conover, really understands both earthing and grounding and also how there is the potential for some EMF um uh there's a little bit of confusion about what you can do with EMFs in terms of earthing and grounding; meaning some people um kind of assume that if you have a conductive surface that electromagnetic fields are also going to be drawn to that and that's going to cause issues. And her products have done a beautiful job in terms of mitigating any aspect of EMFs kind of polluting the earthing and the grounding benefits that we're going to get. And so she's got different products, such as a little mini mat; I have one right here underneath my desk; it's this tiny little mat where I can put my feet on top of it. I have mine plugged into an outlet, and the nice thing about her products is that it comes with an outlet tester to make sure that the outlet you're plugging something into actually is grounded. I also have done it where I've had an a one of her rods driven into the Earth and then connect one of the cables to it, one of the earthing cords to it, and then connect it to the to the product itself, the earthing mat, and also can pull in electrons that way if you don't trust using an outlet. Um, and then lastly, there's things like earthing um bed sheets and earthing blankets, and uh I haven't had one client who has purchased one of her products be disappointed; it's a very great way to maintain that continuity with the source of electrons all day long, even indoors.

So earthing is something that can be very powerful. One of the things that I love when I've been studying earthing is to see things like before and after photos of red blood cells that get stacked and clumpy all on top of each other. These are red blood cells that are not flowing well; they're not distributing nutrients and oxygen; they're just really, really stuck and coagulating. And then all of a sudden, after earthing, you see these red blood cells start to plump away, and because what are those red blood cells doing? Earth's electrons are literally flowing around the surface and and going to the surface of each and every single red blood cell and creating a halo of electrons around them. And because electrons have a negative charge, if each red blood cell has this negative charge, these negative charges are going to repel each other, and so these blood cells plump away from each other and start to reestablish healthy blood flow again. You'll see the same thing in terms of before and after images of earthing and inflammation; you'll see thermographic scans where there's a really big hot spots of inflammation, meaning uh they show up really bright pink and red and even white, uh and you'll see that before earthing, and you'll see it after earthing, and you'll see almost all of the red and the pink and the white hot spots of inflammation decrease; they become colors like green and blue, meaning that the inflammation is going away or it's gone. And that's because inflammation really generates a lot of reactive oxygen species that need electrons to calm them, so the body can calm inflammation from earthing as well. And so I don't really see a downside to earthing indoors, contrary to what you may hear.

One of the um most interesting research articles that really provided me with a very um good understanding of earthing indoors, even in a high non-native EMF environment, was one that was done in a newborn NICU unit. So that's an a newborn Intensive Care Unit; uh they did a study to to have some of these babies earth and grounded, connected to an inside form of grounding, right? They had these babies connected to um a grounding product, and then that was plugged in to an outlet. The babies who were grounded in Earth had such a better recovery; it was it was night and day compared to babies who were not connected and were not grounded, grounded um or or connected to Earth's electrons. And so that's a high non-native EMF environment, and we're still trying to ground these babies with artificial grounding materials, right? Not necessarily artificial because Dr. Con's products are organic cotton, but we're not doing it as if we're placing these babies just on the Earth itself and getting it the way we would in nature; we're doing it with a product through an outlet in a high non-native EMF environment, and that showed such success in helping babies get out of the NICU so much faster. And so really we have to kind of shift our brain from um uh-oh, there might be a lot of damage with the stray non-native EMFs to my body needs electrons; a body is requires electrons, and those electrons serve a huge healing purpose. And so if I can maintain contact with those electrons and and flow those electrons into me all day long, that's a benefit; that's healing; that's healthy.

Now be, you can be on a grounding mat indoors all day long; you can sleep on it all night long; the body will only pull in the electrons it needs; it's not like you're going to overdo the electrons. Same thing with being outside; you could stand barefoot outside for 10 hours every single day of your life, and you're not going to overdo uh the electrons coming into you; you're not going to overdo that charge. And so I would say um do it as much as you can in the winter, and if you do want to do it in a more natural, quote-unquote natural way, being outside and maybe touching a tree or putting your bare feet to the Earth, then I would say instead of doing a longer chunk, space it out; do three minutes here, do five minutes there, do 10 minutes here; really try to um kind of recharge your electron battery, your electron-rich body periodically throughout the day. Um, it seems to be a really good way to get outside regularly in the winter as well, to sync up with the natural light signals, to remind your body of the cold exposure that you're trying to keep maintain with the brown adipose tissue and the mitochondria's ability to generate heat for you. And then you get the added benefit of pulling Earth's electrons into you as a beautiful, as nature's antioxidant, basically a beautiful way to support health, healing, lowering inflammation; so many benefits you're going to get from doing that on a regular basis.
