Now, four out of the five were associated with the University of Genoa, and one of them, a professor of ecology named Monica Montafalcone, was there with her daughter Georgia. Both of them now killed. Uh Montafalcone actually fairly well known in Italy. She appeared on TV a lot talking about conservation issues, a high-profile academic. Um at this point, the university is saying the sympathy of the entire university community goes out to the families, colleagues, and students who shared their human and professional lives.
It's clear that they were given permission, that they had a clear purpose, and that they knew exactly what they were doing. So, the big question remains, why did this baffling tragedy still happen? They repeatedly insisting this was nothing more than a tragic accident, but many signs suggest there's far more to the story. Testimonies from other divers who entered the water at the same time as the Italian group have revealed several disturbing and unusual details about their decision, which sound like they tried to kill themselves. Moreover, the individuals who were among the first to dive directly into the cave where the tragedy unfolded have confirmed numerous troubling inconsistencies.

Magic. So, last Thursday, a group of five Italians, they went on a vessel as part of a bigger group, and they started going into the water to look at these caves, which are about 60 m deep. And after an hour and 45 minutes, the crew on on the surface of the ship, like surface ship, they got worried and they alerted the Maldivian security forces. And then they found one body on that day. They were able to bring it out because it was near the surface.
We know that this excursion was called a citizen scientist excursion, but it's a very seems very clear that many of these people that were on this dive boat, and there were 20 people who did not go down into the water and who had to watch this all unfold in front of them, they were all sort of tied to or very interested in marine biology and the sea and the underwater environment.
However, multiple other reports have revealed numerous strange and troubling inconsistencies in the timing and actions of the five Italian divers. On the morning of the dive, the 24-member group from the University of Genoa gathered aboard the Safari vessel Duke of York for their second dive briefing of the day. The time was 11:00 a.m. The briefing described a routine fun dive at the Day Akunu Kandu Channel. No mention was made of cave penetration. The instructions outlined a standard recreational excursion around the channel, nothing more. The group included experienced divers and researchers, but the plan on paper remained simple and within normal recreational limits.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., the group of five Italians entered the water first. Gianluca Benedetti, Monica Montefalcione, Giorgia Sammacol, Federico Gualtieri, and Muriel Odino were dropped off on the southern side of the channel, directly near the known entrance to the cave system. Roughly 10 to 20 minutes later, the remaining 20 divers, accompanied by three Maldivian guides, entered the water from the northern side of the channel. The Duke of York positioned itself in the middle of the channel between the two groups, giving the crew a central vantage point for monitoring. The second group completed their dive without incident. They surfaced around 12:30 p.m. after a normal 50 to 60 minute recreational dive. The boat picked them up. Everything proceeded according to the scheduled plan. Yet, the group of five Italians did not surface.
By 12:30 p.m., their scheduled dive time had already elapsed. The crew on the Duke of York began to take notice. Still, no immediate alarm was raised. Surface searches began with the crew initially scanning for bubbles or signs that the group had been carried away by a slight outward current. They did not head straight to the cave entrance, despite knowing its location and the drop-off point. The delay stretched on. It was not until 1:30 to 1:45 p.m., nearly two full hours after the five Italians had entered the water, that the official alarm was finally raised. The gap created a critical window of silence. Two hours underwater far exceeded the normal 45 to 60 minute window for a recreational dive. During that time, the other group had already completed their dive, been collected, and returned safely. The conditions that day allowed the larger group to dive and surface without issue. Weather and currents were not the deciding factor. The problems centered on the five who never came up.

And one reason uh possibly is because the divers did not have any backup uh cylinders. That's one reason. Uh as one official was telling me a short while ago, the fact that they were found deep inside the cave, probably more than 100 m, it shows that they ran out of oxygen. That's one theory. The second one, the divers are also talking about the composition of these oxygen cylinders, how much you have oxygen, nitrogen, helium. The it has to be in the right mix, especially when you go very deep into the water, like 50, 60 m, and the high compression happens. Then it has to be a different composition. And third, probably, you know, something happened inside the cave and the sand and dust kicked up and that disorientated the divers. That's three possible explanations are given, but it is a dangerous mission and one reason why they went inside it was of course for a recreation purpose, but the Maldivian government says for recreation, you don't go below 30 m, that is illegal. And there was no mention of the cave. So, how did they manage to go to the cave without informing, you know, anyone else or the Maldivian authorities? That is going to be part of this investigation.
The initial surface search focused outward, rather than immediately checking the well-known cave. Crew members later explained they suspected drift. That decision caused valuable time. No surface marker buoys, no strict timer enforcement, and no dedicated surface support appeared to track the group once they submerged. The central boat position should have allowed better oversight, yet a 2-hour gap opened anyway. By the time the alarm reached other vessels and marine police, the five had already been underwater far longer than any recreational profile could safely support. These timeline discrepancies point directly to failures in basic dive protocol. A routine fun dive briefing did not match the actual actions taken. Military driver diver, I should say, has died during a search for four Italian divers that are missing inside an underwater cave in the Maldives. Officials say the Italians likely died while exploring a cave about 160 ft deep. Authorities say the divers suffered underwater decompression sickness and was rushed to the hospital where he died. The cause of the death still under investigation.
Two days after the five Italian divers disappeared inside the Dhaalu Atoll Kandu Cave System on May 14th, 2026, the Maldives National Defense Force launched an intensified recovery operation. Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhee, also known as Mudee or Mahadee, joined a team of eight military divers. The 43 or 44-year-old Sergeant Major served as a senior member of the MBF's Rescue Diving Unit. On May 16th, 2026, during what became a high-risk effort to reach the deepest sections of the cave, Mahudhee entered the complex himself using standard compressed air rather than specialized trimix gas mixtures required for such depths and environments. The team had already navigated Chamber 1 and Chamber 2 when Mahudhee pushed further into Chamber 3, the deepest and most remote part of the underwater cave network. According to detailed local reporting from Addu, he lost consciousness just as he attempted to exit back into Chamber 2 near the sandbank area that separates the passages. His dive buddy tried to pull him out but encountered a sudden silt out that reduced visibility to zero. With his own gas limits rapidly approaching, the buddy was forced to leave Mahudhee behind in the chamber and surface alone to save himself. When Mahudhee was eventually retrieved, he had no pulse. Like Gianluca Benedetti, who was later found in Chamber 2, Mahudhee had ventured into Chamber 3, lost consciousness while trying to return through the critical sandbank corridor, and became a victim of the same combination of silt out, gas limits, and disorienting passages. We can say that that on the screen now. So, they have they basically gone in the opposite direction, have they? There's some some claims that maybe their flippers stirred up the sand on the bottom, and that's why they went the wrong way?
Yes, and it's very easy to get disoriented even without uh obscuration like that that you stir up from the bottom. So, you've got no compass under underwater effectively. So, that's another reason that they would or cave divers normally carry a rope with them so they can find their way out. So, yeah, it's believed they may have stirred up the bottom, and then that optical illusion from that sandbank has caused them to take a wrong turn.
Also, it it appears that they were a long way further down uh than they should have been with what recreational diving equipment. Can you talk us through that?
So, recreational dive equipment even with recreational qualifications, you shouldn't go below 40 m, and they were found at the back of the cave at about 60 m. So, there's a lot of extra complications at that depth, nitrogen narcosis, and a a range of different factors, and very limited uh amount of air in your tanks.
So, if they had an instructor, how could that have happened? How could they have been down that far in the first place, let alone taking the wrong turn?
Yeah, well, the one of the Finnish rescuers says that he believes they deliberately entered the cave, but that really is unusual. So, it'll be I think more information will come to light from from there is extra information available uh in the investigation, but they have entered the cave this guy believes deliberately. And once that happens and you get disoriented, you can you might have an intention to go a short way and then come out, and then quickly you get disoriented, and your plans, you know, change. So, that's what the investigation will uncover.
The rescue operation itself revealed significant shortcomings. Following the disappearance of the five Italian divers on May 14th, 2026, the Maldives National Defense Force deployed a team of eight military divers from its Coast Guard Diving Unit.
