Insulin is the master fat storing hormone. There is no other hormone that is going to make fat and store fat.
The average woman comes in and in six weeks she loses about 16 lbs. Men will lose the same. And it's so crazy how little you have to do when you get your insulin right.
Candy Frasier, one of the most trusted fitness and nutrition coaches in the world. For the last 20 years, she has been helping people lose weight, regain their confidence, and build lasting lifestyle habits that truly stick.
I was having terrible cellulite, horrible periods. My sex drive was tanking, and I wasn't even 40 yet. So, I knew something was desperately wrong with me, but nothing really worked for me. And then it was so effortless. I wasn't hungry all the time. My mood got so much better.
Tip number one out of 10, cut the carbs. Cut the carbs. Absolutely. That is the first thing I would tell people to just go strict carnivore for an entire month. Not only are they going to get their insulin levels balanced, they're also going to sleep better, have sex better, their skin is going to get better, they're just going to look better.
Tell me your thoughts. Yes or no? Steak? Yes. Eggs? Yes. Sardines? Yes. Bacon? M.
If you've been trying to lose fat, especially visceral fat, and you have failed, chances are it is not willpower. It is about a hormone that decides whether you're going to gain or lose fat, no matter how many calories you eat.
Today, I'm speaking with the wonderful Candy Fraser of the Primal Bod. She's over 1 million followers on Instagram, and she is known for her no BS approach to weight loss. Today, there's no counting calories. There's no measuring. There is just one smart strategy that will help you burn fat, build muscle, and even sleep like a baby. You're about to learn about the insulin trick that most people have never heard of and why it can finally make fat loss feel effortless.
So, Candy, my first question, you've helped probably thousands of people lose fat. If somebody is just watching this and they follow this strategy, can they really lose up to 20 pounds in just 6 weeks? Absolutely. I've I see it all the time. That's why the promise is the promise. So, on average, the average woman comes in and in six weeks she loses about 16 pounds. We've had more. You know, it depends on kind of the person, what's going on in their body, but we see it over and over again. Very exciting.
Now, you mentioned women. Is that men as well? Can they also lose a lot of weight following what we're going to talk about? Yeah, men will lose the same. Um, and sometimes men, you know, it's easier for them a lot of times to lose, but again, it depends on how much they have to lose, what state their body is in at the time. So, yeah, it's it's different. But on average, 16 pounds in 6 weeks. That's pretty good. That's a lot of weight. That is a lot of weight.
And just to ask, what type of weight or fat are we talking about? Visceral fat, stubborn fat, you know, these jiggly fat that women don't love. What kind of fat is it? You know, that's a really good question, Reena. I like to think that it starts off with visceral fat. Uh, you know, the body, that's the most deadly fat. The body will want to burn that away first. I know you've had Dr. Sean on your show before, and he talks about the heart fat. Dr. Sean's actually a very dear friend of mine. The heart fat is like the first fat to usually go when someone starts going carnivore or very low carb and they get into ketosis. It's the heart fat that goes first and then the the visceral fat and then the deep subcutaneous fat will follow later.
Now, most women want to see that deep subcutaneous fat go away, and I think a lot of guys do, too. But what happens when they get into that state of ketosis is, you know, up to their body. It's really up to what their body is burning. So, I see women lose it pretty much evenly all over. I think that, you know, the inches when you measure, you can really see that, you know, that it's it's going away in the belly, but it's also going away in the hips or the thighs and the arms. uh we see dramatic changes in their faces. Their faces really change as they start going through. They start looking younger like the younger version of themselves. So, uh yeah, it's it it just goes everywhere. It's fat. It's it's going to leave the body eventually. Absolutely. So exciting.
Okay. What is the number one thing that people need to focus on if they want to burn all of this fat, including the visceral fat? Insulin. 100% of the time it's insulin. It insulin is the master fattorring hormone. There is no other hormone that is going to make fat and store fat. I think a lot of times people get especially women uh get frustrated because they've been told it's their hormones and they're like, "Well, you know, estrogen, I'm estrogen dominant." But that isn't what I've seen in my group. You know, we I work with over 6,000 women and in that group of of women, we see doesn't matter what they're coming with, if they have high estrogen levels or their thyroids are a problem, they can still burn the fat. And it's because we target the insulin. Insulin is the one thing. It's why I'm here. So, it's the it's the one thing that you have to focus on if you want to get that fat off your body. Absolutely.
How does insulin because people might know what insulin is, but how does that hormone block somebody from losing fat? What's happening in the body? So, this kind of goes in as you are like my primal girlfriend, you know, we're both we both like the primal um way of thinking about things and what what's true in nature. And what is true in nature is that we had these big um adaptations in our biology and in our DNA to help us to survive being on planet Earth. Things weren't always easy for us humans. And they're easy now, but they weren't. And one of the things we adapted to was to be able to really easily store fat. And that's through insulin. And I think that, you know, a lot of people don't realize, they just think that they can work off, you know, this um, you know, sugar that they eat and they can go to the gym and do whatever, but that's that's not the case. You know, a cupcake produces way more sugar than the same amount of calories in steak. And so, you know, you're you're looking at the big picture, which is I think I'm getting a little off track here, but center me back, arena, which is insulin. It's insulin all the time. If you can figure out how your insulin works and how much insulin you're producing, you can get into the fat.
Absolutely. I think that people when they are thinking about I want to lose fat and I've tried every diet. I know Candy that you've tried many diets. So on your Instagram, how many diets have you tried so that people can understand that? Oh my god, I'm like Candy. I'm no different to her. Oh man, I've done everything. I did, you know, at way back in the day, it was the fat-ree diet back in high school, you know, we would eat turkey, fat-free subs at Subway with mustard and turkey on them and lettuce, you know. So, I did the fat-ree thing. Then I switched over to the Atkins thing. That was way back in the day, too. Um, so I did high fat, high, you know, protein. I did, you know, so many different things. And finally when I became a nutritionist about 11 years ago, almost 12 years ago now, I really focused on just eating whole foods. So I was paleo, you know, I had the like just eat whole foods, that's going to really help. And it did help people, you know, when they cut out the processed stuff and all the seed oils and all the crap and toxins, they did feel better, but it really never helped anybody lose weight. And that's what I experienced in my own body. I I was, you know, having lipadeema and terrible cellulite and horrible periods, really bad with the hormones. My sex drive was tanking and I wasn't even 40 yet. And so, I knew something was desperately wrong with me, but I ate all organic. You know, I took all the supplements and nothing really worked for me. And then, miraculously, I met my husband Tom. And, you know, seven years ago, he's a type 1 diabetic. And that's when we discovered insulin and you know I discovered insulin he knew about it and um he taught me really everything I know today about insulin. So it's been an amazing journey actually.
How do you know if somebody is got elevated insulin? So somebody might be thinking okay can't lose weight maybe I'm not like a diabetic type one or type two. Well, they would know if they're type one but how do they know if they have elevated insulin? Well, they have excess fat on their body. They have elevated insulin. So, it's just as simple as that. And I see a lot of these um folks that come in and they're they're hypoglycemic. So, I explain this a lot. They they come in and they're just, you know, constantly dealing with these low blood sugar moments, but they have a lot of fat on their body. And so, right there, that's when they learn their first lesson about insulin, which is too much insulin drops the blood sugar down. So, a lot of people don't understand why they're experiencing their hypoglycemia, and it's because they're overproducing insulin. And the reason the body does that is a defense mechanism. It it's really not natural for us to have high blood sugar for long periods of time. And so, the body wants to get all the sugar out of the blood because it's hard on our organs. As most people know, if they have had their A1C checked, you know, the doctors want you to keep your A1C below a specific range for a reason because having sticky blood is not good for your organs, specifically your kidneys and nervous system, your liver, all those filters. And so when they have um this hypoglycemia, they don't understand it because they have a lot of fat on their body, but their blood sugar is dropping. Like they need to eat a lot. they need to eat more often because they feel really crummy. And so I tell them, you know, this is this is what happens when you have a lot of fat on your body. You you're great at producing insulin. But then what happens is they're great at producing insulin and their body is working and it is taking all that sugar in their blood that they're eating and it's transforming it into fat. But eventually, Reena, what happens? The system breaks and they develop insulin resistance. So, they've had too much insulin for too long and then their bodies don't their bodies fight back. They they can't tolerate it anymore. So, their body starts developing this resistance to the insulin because they've produced too much of it. And that's where they develop insulin resistance. And then if they keep going, it's, you know, the label of type 2 diabetes. So this is I believe this is where all of our ill health is stemming from is these metabolic dysfunctions. And yeah, you know, people say, well, we live much longer. Of course, we live longer. We have western medicine. You know, when we were primal living, if we broke our leg, we were toast. We were dead. We didn't have antibiotics and doctors and nurses, you know, to help us put it back together. We we would develop infection and we were dead. So we died from wars, we killed each other a lot. You know, there was infant mortality and all of that brought brought the, you know, average lifespan down. But now we're dying of these really decrepit diseases, Alzheimer's, uh, you know, cancer, all of this is metabolic dysfunction within the cell. And if you look and you look at all the research, there's tons of research out there on it. I mean, it's only blatantly obvious this stuff has shifted since we started eating all of these highly processed, selectively bred plants. And we moved away from our true food, which is meat. And that's when we started developing ill health, chronic disease, and to put it blatantly honest, just terrible physical appearance. I mean, look at us. We don't look healthy. We look really sad and pathetic.
Yes. I mean, every single metabolic disease, including mental health disorders, mood problems, how people behave every day, is coming down to the things that we eat.
That goes to my next question, Candy. What do you think is the worst things that people are doing or eating every day that is causing elevated insulin and not making them lose fat? Uh, so I would say the people the the regular people that are just out there, bread, pasta, you know, those are big ones. Potatoes, those will rise your blood sugar up just like a cupcake. And we learned this by, you know, my husband being type 1 diabetic. So, a lot of people think that they're health foods, sweet potatoes, protein drinks, you know, their maple syrup, um, chia seed pudding in the fridge or their overnight oats. that they think is really health food because they saw it on Instagram and they think, you know, that's what they've been told. This is going to make me healthy. Um, you know, the food pyramid wants you to believe that, you know, you got to eat your eight servings of grains or however many it is, 10 or 11. And so, they think these foods are healthy, but in the body, it acts no different than hogen ice cream. So, they're eating these foods that they consider health foods, and they're like, "Why can't I get thin? I'm going to the gym. I'm putting on some muscle, but I've got all this fat over my muscle and I'm just getting bigger and more plump. And you know, it's frustrating for people in my situation because I was that girl. I was that exact girl. I was vegan for seven years. I ate all the sweet potatoes and all the junky processed, you know, vegan crackers and hummus. And I was so bloated. I worked out constantly. And I was bloated, fatigued, had all this fat over my muscle, the cellulite, and I couldn't figure it out. So, it breaks my heart to see them um struggle like that because they they believe they're being healthy. They believe their protein shake is is the healthy thing to do in the morning and it's just not.
What about almonds and almond milk? Oh, man. If I could take back one thing about my food history, it would be almond milk. Oh, the amount of almond milk I consumed as a vegan. man. Yeah. No, it's um it is not a health food at all. It's actually the opposite. And it's if I'm sure you had Sally Norton on uh, you know, if you hear Sally talk, you won't touch almond milk with a 10-ft pole. Forget about it. It's loaded with oxalate. It is um loaded with all kinds of pesticides. Usually, almonds are one of the most heavily sprayed um plants there are out there. And almonds were very very toxic to humans until humans started messing around with the plant and selectively bred it to be, you know, not to be toxic. But it's still toxic. You know, I think it was um 50 wild almonds or no, I think it's even under 50 would kill a a full grown man. Wild almonds because they're so high in cyanide. Yeah. And but people just see them as this health food, right? they're labeled as hearthealthy and they they want to get all their servings of their hearthealthy nuts in and it's just not the case. It is the exact opposite.
Yeah. I think um this would explain why people focus on, you know, maybe whole grain bread and like chia pudding and almond milk and smoothies in the morning and you see that so much on Instagram. I'm not an Instagram person, but you do see it a lot on there. And that would explain why people cannot lose weight.
Question for you. How often and how much do you exercise to have your body? Oh man, I'm pretty lazy right now. We're actually getting a gym built in our house, which is super exciting because we we need to start lifting some weights. My gym right now is pathetic. Uh so I I walk with my weighted vest and I usually walk for, you know, anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 steps a day. Sometimes I do more. Uh and I'll do, you know, I do squat a lot. I do a lot of squats. I do a primal squat. Um, I try to hang from our pull-up bar. I try to do pull-ups. I'm not really good at them. Um, so I'm pretty freaking lazy. And I think it's awesome that I can feel this good in my body and my movement is so minimal. I do sprint um, you know, but I probably sprint three times a week and you know, it's just it literally takes me five minutes to get my sprints in. It's so crazy how little you have to do when you get your insulin right. Absolutely. That's when you get your insulin right, you do less but more of the right things and you have an amazing body as we can see.
How old are you by the way, Candy? I hope that I can ask that question. I'm sorry. Yes. No, totally. I'm 45. I'll be 46 in March. So, three I've had three boys and I had them when I was young, but um I feel better now than I did when I was in my 20s for sure. Amazing. as a fellow well I'm 42 so I'm like not far from you but when you get these things right the magic just happens.
Last question before we get into the insulin trick that's going to help people lose fat. How do you know that it's not about calories? What is the and there is proof. What is the proof that it's about insulin and not calories? Yes. Well, this is amazing. And so my husband um when we started figuring out what we needed to do to keep his blood sugar balance because when Tom and I met, you know, I was feeding him all these yummy paleo foods that were like these date and nut like pastry treats, you know, all this like paleo um maple syrup and honey and stuff. And he was eating them cuz he's a guy and he just was like, "Yeah, my wife's feeding me all this good food. I'm going to eat it." But his blood sugar was really bad. And so, you know, it it scared me a lot because he would have to give himself a lot of insulin. And when type 1 diabetics have to give themselves a lot of insulin, then you're basically just watching the clock, waiting for that insulin to kick in. And once it does, it's going to drop like a rock and then you're going to face the low. So, if you've ever watched the movie Steel Magnolius, I don't know if you've seen it, Raina, but in the movie, Julie Roberts is one of the main actresses. She has type 1 diabetes and in the movie she uh gets a low in a in a hair salon and she's her mom's there with her and she's shaking. It's really dramatic. She's sweating and they give her orange juice and give her some candy to suck on to bring her blood sugar back up. And I remember when I watched that movie years ago before I met Tom, I thought that must be terrifying. I never want to have to deal with that. That's so scary. Then, you know, fast forward, I meet Tom and that was happening. It was scary. not to that extreme, but it was scary for me. And, you know, Tom didn't like it either. It's not fun for him. So, we decided that we were going to live our lives in in complete direction towards keeping his blood sugar nice and low so he didn't have to overcorrect with insulin and stable. And so, he taught me what we needed to do to do that. And as we did that, I did it with him. I wanted to help him. him. I wanted to help support him with this. And so I ate just like he ate. I moved just like he moved so that he didn't have to do it by himself. And it was amazing what happened because after about 6 weeks I dropped 13 pounds. It was so effortless and I felt so much better. I was sleeping through the night. My skin improved. My mood got so much better. I wasn't hungry all the time. I could go hours without eating. So I felt just incredible and um so you know I was like th this is what we got to do. We got to we got to focus on insulin. People need to understand and know uh about insulin. I'm sorry I got off track again.
Now as Candy mentions insulin is key not just for losing weight but for our overall better health. And by health I not only mean our physical body but our mental and our emotional well-being. Things like how we feel every day, our mood, and even our thoughts. And I know this because I used to live in my head. I used to feel anxious and overwhelmed most of the time. And what completely changed my life along with going carnivore was therapy. And if my therapist was watching me right now, I think they'd say I've had some major breakthroughs. You see, I've learned so many lessons like how to regulate my emotions, let go of limiting beliefs, and truly grow as a person. And those lessons actually inspired me to start the Primal Podcast. And that's to remind you and myself that we're never alone in figuring ourselves out. And one of the most powerful things my therapist gave me was a set of simple self soothing tools. Things like taking a hot shower, slowing my breath, or just feeling my feet in the ground. Therapy was one of the best decisions I've ever made. And if you've been thinking about trying therapy, but don't know where to begin, well, that's where today's paid partner, BetterHelp, comes in. Your husband, who I just met, Tom, uh he's a type 1 diabetic. So, because um he doesn't have insulin, he has to inject insulin, otherwise his blood sugar is going to elevate and then so he can never really get fat. Although type 1 diabetics can actually get insulin resistance from all the processed foods that people are eating. But the question is insulin. How do you know that it's about insulin if people say it's about calories? I have a take on that. But what is your perspective? So you can eat the same amount of calories in steak and you can eat the same amount of calories in pancakes and you're going to get fat from the pancakes. You're not going to get fat from the steak. The steak isn't going to make you fat. The pancakes are going to make you fat. And it's just go try it. To anybody who wants to like really figure out how insulin works, try that. You can eat a bunch of calories in a certain amount of food and then you eat a bunch of calories in a certain amount of meat and you will see right away that you're not retaining water. The inflammation goes away. I mean, within the first week, you start feeling better. Weight comes off. You're sleeping through the night. everything will change. It's it's so critical to understand how your body produces insulin, when, where, and why, because insulin's the one storing fat. And if you eat all these calories in pancakes, um, but the sugar amount is through the roof, you're going to produce that amount of insulin to take care of that amount of sugar. Meat breaks down slowly over time, and not all of it breaks down to glucose. So you eat that many calories in steak, you're producing hardly any insulin compared to the pancakes, you're still producing insulin in the exact right amount in the amount that our primal DNA was designed to handle. Our bodies were never designed to deal with the copious amounts of carbs that we eat. They were never designed that way.
It makes sense. I've spoken to the likes of Dr. Jason Fun. I've also spoken to people that are not in the ketogenic realm and they do talk about calories, but my take on it is that the hormones come first because if you overeat something, it's the hormones that kick in to tell you, are you full? Are you hungry? And then if you eat the right foods, your volume of food tends to regulate by itself, which they term calories. I don't know why they say calories because the calories does not make sense when it comes to a human body, but actually both make sense. But if you eat the right thing, you stop feeling full. I can't tell you how many people have done carnivore the way that we're talking about the way of eating. They say, "I feel full for the first time." I'm like, "Yeah, because you're eating a fatty piece of steak, not that white bread or not that chia pudding." Anyways, exactly. I love it, Reena. I love your theory on that. That's an amazing theory. It is. It's It's hormonal driven, but they don't understand the hormone insulin. You know, insulin makes you hungry. When your blood sugar drops, you get hungry. Insulin is the hormone that makes you really hungry. So you have to eat more. That's why in hypoglycemia you experience that when you hypoglycemia for people who have excess fat on their body is really hyper insulinia. Too much insulin and you experience that blood sugar dip and you're just you're just hungry because your body's trying to get the blood sugar back up. So it it forces you to eat more so that you get that feeling of stabilized blood sugar again because the insulin did too good of a job. But like we said, eventually it insulin doesn't work anymore. And that's where you develop in your 50s. And you know, some some people even earlier now, you know, in their 40s are developing insulin resistance.
Okay, let's talk about the insulin trick to help people lose fat faster. Tip number one out of 10, cut the carbs. What is your take on that? Cut the carbs. Absolutely. That is the first thing. I mean, I would tell people to just go strict carnivore for an entire month and to really understand what meat does for their body because not only are they going to get their insulin levels effortlessly, they're going to get their insulin levels balanced, but they're also going to sleep better, they're going to have sex better, their skin is going to get better, they're just going to look better. If there's one diet for people to do, definitely uh humans are carnivores. Whether Whoever Wikipedia wants to believe it or not, we are we're the apex predator. We are carnivores. We are designed to eat meat. That is our proper food. Can we eat some vegetables and, you know, fruit? Yes, you can. You're not going to die. But our dogs and our cats are fed plant foods in their um their their food. They don't die, but they're carnivores and we consider them carnivores, but we feed them plants. They don't die, but they're they're not well either. The dogs and cats are not well. Our our domesticated animals are not full of vigor and life like the wild animals eating their species specific diet and that's what's happened to us humans too.
Okay, question. So you mentioned carbs. Drop the carbs. Carnivore is great. Now I see people saying fruit is good. What are your thoughts about fruit? Uh fruit will make you fat. So fruit is also highly selectively bred. It is uh one of those things that I think people have a hard time giving up because they think it's the healthy healthy sugar. You know, it's got all the minerals in it and it's the healthy thing to do, but in reality, um it is so loaded with sugar that it's it's just like eating cake. It's no it's the same thing. When Tom's blood sugar gets low, he uses fruit to bring his blood sugar up. So, the fiber around it, the whole myth that fruit doesn't make you fat is just false. I've seen it over and over. I've had the girls in my in my I've had the people in my program that have done the meat and fruit diet. We call it the hibernating bear diet is what we call it because it just puts fat on you. You're eating I mean, it's gluttonous. You're eating all of this fruit and you're just building all this fat from all the high blood sugar, but then you're eating the meat and the fat with the meat and then you're just locking your blood sugar in. And anytime your blood sugar gets locked in, that is when you overproduce insulin. And you don't want to overproduce the master fattoring hormone. So, you know, you can try the bare diet if you want. I wouldn't do it. It just makes people fat. I've had so many people in and they just get pissed because they're like, "Well, I thought I was eating healthy. I'm eating all this meat, this, you know, grass-fed meat and tallow and butter and I'm eating, you know, organic grown fruit and I just I think that I'm doing so well." And they just get fat. You know, they're gaining 20 pounds in a month eating this diet. So you But if you remove the fat the fruit out of it, what happens? They lose the weight. So, the fact that fruit doesn't make you fat is not true.
Okay. So, I heard a video just last week actually saying that take a tablespoon of honey before you go to bed. It can help you sleep. What do you think about honey? Molasses. I've seen these stuff on the internet. Honey is a no. That is a direct like blood sugar hit. Um, I I no, I think that honey can be used in an emergency when your blood sugar gets really low. For type 1 diabetics, a honey stick or a a maple syrup stick is that's what Tom uses if his blood sugar drops really low or a piece of fruit. But, um, that's only for emergencies. And most people when they, you know, eat enough protein in their day, they have to be eating enough protein. if they eat enough protein, they won't have blood sugar issues. So, if there are people that, you know, eat the fruit and the honey and they're they, you know, feel better, it's usually because they weren't eating enough protein. They were eating minimal protein. And a lot of those people like carbs. They like the sweet. They want to enjoy the sweet. You know, it's it's in our DNA to be directed towards sweet because what does sweet produce? A lot of fat. And in nature, when there wasn't any sweet around, if there was some berries or some honey, we would eat as much as we could of it because we would want to fatten up like bears do for hibernation. We would want to put fat on our body so that we could survive the winter famine. But people now are eating fruit all year long, and the fruit isn't real. It's highly selectively bred. Wild fruit does not contain the sugar like today's fruit does. So even the the mango trees and the papaya trees and all these beautiful fruits that look really organic that you see grown in Costa Rica and all Hawaii and wherever. And people say, "Well, it's it's natural." Those are not natural fruits. Those have been highly selectively bred. And humans have not adapted to consume that much fructose and sugar.
Because you said that, I believe you. I'm not going to have fruit and I don't have fruit anyway. So, but I hope you're not going to have fruit. So, step number one, cut the carbs. So, no bread, pasta, don't have fruit. Don't have the honey. It's not going to help you sleep.
Point number two, meat. Meat makes the muscle and burn fat. Why? Carbs make fat. Meat makes muscle. And meat breaks down to glucose. So your body can have the glucose that it needs, but it also breaks down to amino acids so that you can put structure into your body. Not only muscles, but think your organs, your bones, right? Those are dense. They need a lot of amino acids to build them strong. So um they've done a lot of studies on osteoporosis and what did they find? That the the one thing it wasn't the vitamin D or the calcium that helped. It was more protein. So, the most simple way I think people can think about it is when they look at their plate and they see the potatoes, they need to see the fat that's going to be made from those potatoes that's going to go on their ass and on their tummy and on the back of their arms. That makes fat. Carbs make fat. Meat makes muscle. So, it's very simple way to understand it. And I think it's a really good way to explain it to your kids, too. I think kids undereat protein. You know, they get caught up because as babies, we feed these babies cans, jars of fruits and vegetables and they don't eat the meat. And then they get this bad microbiome that's just constantly craving fruit and sugar. And parents think that it's the healthy thing to just, oh, we're giving them grapes and this is healthy, you know, nature's candy, right? But it's exactly what it is. It's candy. It's the same. it breaks down to the same glucose and so these little growing brains need this protein and they're not getting it. They're deprived from it. So I think it's our responsibility to teach our kids what those two macros do in our body. The the meat makes the muscle and the carbs make the fat. And yes, kids should have some um fat on their body, but they can make fat on their body from eating the meat and eating the fat that's in the meat. You know, I'm not an extremist. I think that that there is occasions where kids can have, you know, some fruit on occasion, but it isn't the the source of the nutrients that their body growing bodies need. That is the meat. The meat is what's going to help their bodies grow.
I'm glad that you said that that it's not about being extreme and um really ex people love extremes whether it's not eating for 5 days or just eat meat. It's really about if you look at the plate it's majority meat but we've been told the other way to eat the healthy carbs and the grains and the fruits but it's the opposite. And actually even you said that even berries they're seasonal like two to three weeks in a year. I'm like really I didn't really know that. Um, so how much protein do people need to eat every day? Well, that is the million-dollar question, Reena. That is what everyone wants to know and or should want to know actually because when you figure out how much protein is right for your body, you figured out insulin. And when you figured out insulin, you can get into ketosis. And that's where the fat burning begins. So, we can talk about ketosis if you want to. Um, but the goal is to figure out how much protein your body needs. And everyone is different. This is where the bio individuality comes along. And I know a lot of people, you know, you want to feel special in a way. You're you're you think of yourself as like I have these requirements that I need. It's majority the same in in a sense that we all need to eat more meat. We all just need to eat more protein. Uh, but what it really looks like to get your insulin figured out is figuring out how much your fuel system needs. I like to explain it like a car. So I I tell all my my members, your your body is like a car and you have this fuel system and your body is going to run on glucose and ketones. That is your that's your fuel. That's your gas and you want to run on both of them at the same time. And if you can do that, you find metabolic nirvana really. You find the perfect place to be. That's where our ancestors were burning glucose and ketones at the same time. But if you get too high on your glucose, you can't burn ketones for fuel. So, bringing it back down to how much they need, it depends on how big of an engine they have in their car, which is how much muscle do they have on their body, how much what's their metabolic rate, how fast are they driving their car, and how long are they driving their car. So, you know, how fast is their metabolism working? That's their speed. and how the duration, how far are they going? How much are they moving? So, it's really those factors. How much are you moving? How much muscle do you have on your body? And where are you at in your age? What's your metabolic rate? Are you in your childbearing years? And so, you see a lot of swings in your, you know, hormonal fluctuations. Are you through menopause? So, things have calmed down in your body and you're in this state of kind of place where you don't need to do as much food. your body your body has came to this state of more of a a resting phase. And so it's different for everyone, but if you can track your ketones, you can really understand what your needs are for your protein requirements and your movement needs, too. It gets pretty specific for each individual.
What about minimums? Like what is a number that somebody on average, let's just say somebody is our age or maybe in their 50s, they're hopefully they're a bit active, they have a little bit of muscle, maybe they're what's the minimum protein number so that people have an idea. Um, well, I think that, you know, minimum 120 grams. Some girls need less depending on their height, too. You know, I found a lot of a lot of people, you know, that are, you know, below 5'4 need they just need less. they're just shorter. So, I would say 120 grams is a good amount for most people um at a minimum. But, you know, Reena, I can eat anywhere from 200 to 250 grams of protein a day, no problem easily. Oh my god. So, I feel like we're the same. I can as well. And is that bad for us if we eat that much protein? Hey, you know what? I go on how I feel. I feel amazing. I feel so good. So, I can't, you know, I I follow some research and I understand it and I read it and I take it into consideration, but I don't let it dictate me. What dictates me is how I feel, how well I'm doing, um, how much of visceral fat I have. That also dictates me. So, I those are the things that I that guide me. And I feel amazing when I eat 200 250 grams of protein a day. Now, I don't eat every day of the week. I don't eat for two days of the week. I fast. So, I think that some of the fuel there is getting, you know, pushed into those days. So, I feel that this is what's right for me because it's the best I've ever felt. So, that's why I just keep doing it.
Okay. Makes sense. Just to clarify, I don't eat 250 grams of protein. I eat the higher end. And for me, that's like 130, 140. Sometimes I can do 150 grams and sometimes I think that might be a little bit high. But if you're active and depending on the next point which is fat, where that fat number is, it will depend on how your energy is. So with fat, this is a lever that people have to pull in terms of how much fat or extra fat that they eat. What do you have to say about how much fat people should eat if they're carnivore and if they want to get into ketosis? Yes. So, this is a big one that I think a lot of the carnivores struggle with is their fat intake. And what I have found, and this is was just like my own personal study with Tom's blood sugar and now helping, you know, over 6,000 people with weight loss. It's very clear to me that fat will block you from getting into ketosis for one, and it will block you from burning fat. So, you can make fat out of fat. And this is where the whole fat-ree diet craze came in is because, you know, the anatomy and physiology is perfectly clear. You can make fat from fat. Now, when you're in a low insulin environment inside your body and you're not producing very much insulin, it's harder to make fat because insulin makes the fat. But there is a little bit of glucose in fat. Even the fat that you're eating, there's a little bit of glucose in the meat that you're eating and the fat. And so it can get converted into more fat. So you have that one problem right there is fat can can put fat on your body. The other problem is when you eat protein and fat together in high amounts. So high amounts of fat like a ribeye for example and you're eating ribe eyes day in day out with butter on them. What's happening is the meat is breaking down to glucose slowly over time through gluconneogenesis. And that meat will start to raise your blood sugar up. But saturated fat slows the absorption of insulin. So when you have that fat on the ribeye with the butter and the steak, when you eat that together, what's happening is slowly your blood sugar is raising from the meat nice and slow and steady. It's not at peak, but it does raise. But you have so much fat behind that meat that it gets into your blood and it slows the absorption of insulin. And anytime you slow the absorption of insulin, your blood sugar stays higher. So your body tries to produce more insulin. And the reason we figured this out is because if Tom eats a ribeye, my husband Tom who doesn't produce insulin, he has to give himself insulin. If he eats a ribeye, his blood sugar can go up to 300 and it will stay there locked into place for hours sometime until the next day and he has to give himself so much insulin. If he eats a piece of white fish or a tenderloin, totally different story. So the fat and I know it's hard for a lot of carnivores to understand that because you're told, you know, fat doesn't produce any insulin, so therefore it can't make you fat. And it's just not the truth. Um, yes, it's it can you need fat, you need a healthy amount of fat, but you don't need excess fat. And the animals today, cows, pigs, and chickens in Turkey even are they they're like Sesame Street animals, right? They're they're highly selectively bred animals and they're fed corn and soy and all of these um plant foods, grains, to fatten them up, to grow a lot of fat on their body. Wild animals don't make a lot of fat. the the animals that are highest in fat in nature are in the sea. They're in the water. They're the fish, the fatty fish. And that DHA helps build every cell in your body. So, it's like nature is just pointing you straight to the right amount of fat you need, which is the fat in the fish. And fish do contain some saturated fat. So, you'll get your saturated fat with that. Now, you know, elk, deer, um bison, those are more wild game and they are leaner. Any hunter knows when you get um your deer cut up by the butcher and you go make deer burger or elk burger, venison, you know, whatever, you have to add some beef fat into it because it won't stick together because it's so lean. That animal is very, very lean. Not to mention, if you have eaten a real true grass-fed steak with fat on it, that fat is really tough. It's gristly. It doesn't taste as good, and it's hard to get a lot of fat in that. So, wild animals, even if they produced a lot of fat, the fat wasn't what we ate on it necessarily. We would get into the bone marrow. We would eat the organs. You know, maybe the brain was high in fat, but the fat on the body we didn't necessarily go after because it was tough. It was like shoe leather and it was hard to eat. And then not to mention that, but fat makes you really full. And when you eat a lot of
Fat, you get nauseous. You get full. You get an upset tummy. Sometimes you get diarrhea. So, that's another sign right there that we shouldn't be eating enormous amounts of fat.
Yes, some fat is good for us. We need to have fat. It's a building, it's an essential building block, but we can't overdo the fat. Fat in very moderate amounts is what we need. As Candy mentions, adequate fat is so important, especially if you want to try a carnival diet and lower your insulin and lose a lot of weight. And I have seen this myself when I went carnival 5 years ago. And honestly, I have seen thousands of people do the carnivore diet and they've lost so much weight and they've also reversed chronic health conditions. Conditions like heart failure, diabetes, thyroid issues, all while eating more and potentially eating more calories. And what I found helped myself and my community stay on track was medical support through our team of carnivore doctors. And that is why I created an online private community completely off social media called Go Carnival. This is where you can ask all of your questions to our team of medical doctors, including Candy, who will be joining us. One of the best things about our community are our monthly challenges. We do our high-fat challenge and our protein challenge and so many other challenges. And this is where you're going to get your best results. So, if you want to try Carnival with the medical support, just head to go carnival.com and try your free 14-day challenge and get your free meal plan.
Okay, let me clarify that for my audience. You're not anti-fat and low fat by any means because when you go carnivore or go primal, it is by minimum around 60% fat by a minimum usually like when when you think about macro. So, you're not anti-fat, but you see some people when they especially go to a carnivore or zerocarb diet, they will lean on more fat and it could just be for physical fullness, emotional fullness, and just that transition process. So, we're not talking about that because I do agree with you and understand where you're coming from. When we're talking about the end point of even fat loss and weight loss, which is after you've transitioned to this type of eating, after maybe you're eating carbs, you can just lean on the fat in the meat and you can switch between if people like ribeyes, have ribeyes. If you want leaner cuts, have leaner cups. But in this day and age with the meats that we have, they tend to be fattier than, for example, as you said, grass-fed. I hope that makes sense to people because we're pro-fat and fat is good for you, but you don't need to eat a stick of butter, right?
Exactly. That's exactly. And that that stick of butter isn't going to help you lose the weight either. And just to preface that, if somebody's eating a stick of butter and they say, "Hey Candy, hey Reena, I'm doing great." Good for you. Be amazing and eat that stick of butter. But most people are going to do really well. And think of Dr. Kimberry, Dr. Shan Baker, Dr. and Anthony Chaffy, they primarily eat the meat and even some organ meats from time to time.
Now, point number four, fasting. You do a 48-hour fast. What do you eat during that fast?
Absolutely nothing. Nothing. Just water. It's just a strict I will drink a little fermented um pickle brine or sauerkraut brine just to get the microbes in. Um, if I'm craving some salt, I'll drink the the brine and it just takes it right away. That's mostly what people face when they're doing fasting is they go low salt and then they get hungry. If you can just drink water and take in a little salt through I like the fermented pickle brine because you're getting good microbes in your gut. Um, then you know you're you're good. So, yes, we just we just do water and a little couple little sips of the fermented pickle brine and we're good to go. 48 hours every week.
Okay. If somebody doesn't want to do 48 hours, maybe eating fewer times, so to lower insulin, eating two to three times a day and no snacks. Would that be a good starting point?
Absolutely. I mean, yes. And you know what I found, Reena, is just start, you know, like you said, the first thing you can do is just just try carnivore for even give it three days and see how much better you're sleeping. You know, just start there one by one. You don't have to rule everything out. You know, you we're grown ass adults. We can do whatever we want, but how are you ever going to know if you don't give it a try and you always have to go over the edge a little bit with something to understand what your body truly needs and likes? So, I'm a big fan for, you know, just just slowly start maybe maybe once a week skip dinner and see how you feel when you skip dinner. Do you feel better? How do you feel in the morning? Did you sleep better? Uh, but if you're not trying it, you're not you're never going to know.
And you say that if people have weight to lose, they should maybe skip dinner and have an earlier second meal. What time should their last meal be if they want to lose weight?
I like between 2 and 3 p.m. for we call it a liner. So, we eat breakfast, big nice big breakfast, and then a a good size of liner. And then you're able to get through all that glycogen that you produce. Your blood sugar becomes stable. Your insulin drops to a nice, you know, low amount so that your melatonin can come out because if insulin's out, your melatonin is not going to come out and then you're not going to sleep well. So, we like around 2 to 3 p.m. for our cut off for food.
Okay. I try to do 5 or 6 p.m., but maybe I can try to move it up. Um, okay.
Next one is, what's your thoughts about coffee?
Coffee. Um, so coffee is a drug and it is pro is as addictive if not more than sugar I would say. Um, you know, everybody's doing coffee and everybody's sick. So, I like to look at the masses and what they're doing and how well they're doing. And when we know most Americans have five to seven prescriptions in their cabinets right now, they're not doing well. And what are they all doing every day? Coffee. So coffee is an extreme um hormonal disruption. So anytime you take in a drug that makes you overproduce cortisol like coffee does, you're going to have implications in the hormonal chain down the road. And that's what I see happen over and over again. The the you know talk about, oh, we'll fix your hormones with HRT. Well, our ancestors never had HRT, but our ancestors didn't have coffee either. Coffee is a fairly new thing like um you know the same as agriculture. A lot of people think oh oatmeal is an ancient grain. It's not. It's a fairly new thing when you consider the big grand scheme of how long homo sapiens have been here. So coffee is the same thing. And uh I think that the biggest thing people should try first is is cutting out their coffee if they if they have hormonal um disruptions and things going on and their doctors are telling them to go on HRT or you know their their low tea or whatever it is. Man, just it's as simple as quit the coffee. But I get so much hate for it because people are so addicted. You know, it's like telling heroin addicts to give up their heroin. So that's where I'm at with the coffee thing. It's another one of those things where you have to just go off of it, give your body the space to heal, and see what happens.
So, that goes to the next tip, which is um how to get more energy to burn fat in the morning if you don't have coffee. So, if somebody doesn't have coffee in the morning, how do they get energy?
The question should be, why do you need energy that's over the top? Why do you need your inner metronome to be spinning at mock speed? Why can't you wake up in a nice restful state? So, a lot of girls experience when they go off coffee, their sex drives come back and they feel calm. They have this sense of calmness that comes over them and happiness. And it's because they're not experiencing that fight or flight. First thing in the morning, you want to run from a tiger because that's what's in your cup is your your body is running from a tiger. Every time you have a cup of coffee, it is running from a tiger. So you want to feel that way for most of your day because coffee lasts a good four to eight hours in your system. And so just to me I see that as something highly toxic. You know we have a lot of people talk about how toxic seed oils are. And in my opinion it's coffee. Coffee is way more toxic to our body than than we think it is. And we've liked to believe that oh it's just you know antioxidant. It's got all these health benefits. It helps me poop. If you can't poop without coffee, that's a problem. That is a problem.
Wait, people say it helps them poop.
Oh, yeah. Lots of people would drink coffee because it makes them have a bowel movement. But the reason it makes them have a bowel movement is because it triggers that running from a tiger, that fight-or-flight response. It's a toxic chemical that your body is trying to get rid of. It's a pesticide. Your body is trying to evacuate it out of your system immediately. So, it makes people poop.
Well, I have one coffee in the morning because like it's just my ritual. And people say, "Oh, they like to wake up." And I do the same thing, you know, look outside, have the coffee, but I have one cup, but I need to kind of quit coffee, I think.
Oh, Reena, you I mean, your skin is already gorgeous, but just wait. If you quit the coffee, your skin will be amazing. Amazing. Coffee is so dehydrating. Not only that, it's highly acidic. So, it leeches all that all those really good um you know, calcium and uh magnesium, potassium, it leeches everything out of our system. And as carnivores or as as people that eat mostly meat, you know, you don't want to be doing that because you're getting, you know, your mineral sources are li are lower, but that's okay that they're lower because you're not overproducing insulin, but you don't want to throw the coffee on top of that and leech everything out. You want to be able to live in a good, nice, stable pH and coffee throws that all off. So we notice that when people stop drinking coffee that redness around their nose, around their, you know, face that goes away. You know, sometimes when you have coffee and you notice that you're fine, but when you take it away, you notice that was causing me a bit of jittery. I wasn't feeling so good. So, you know, even if it's and the thing about fat loss, which you know, people say that caffeine can blunt your appetite and it helps with fat loss. However, I've seen with so many people, if you feed your body with nutrients and then you feel full and you have stable energy and you eat less times during the day, not less calories, that's a perfect way to burn visceral fat and burn stubborn fat.
Absolutely. Absolutely. I am a huge fan of it. Yes. Just let your body do it on its own.
Okay, perfect. Second to last tip, movement and exercise. What do you have to do to burn the fat as fast as possible?
As fast as possible. Um, well, you have to figure out how much protein you need uh in order to find that homeostasis with insulin to allow you to get into ketosis. And I know that sounds complex, but it's actually really easy to to do. And um, you know, I would say that, you know, as fast as possible, yes, walking, walk, walk, walk, walk, walk. Walking is so critical. Our ancestors walked seven miles a day on average. So, we need to be doing the same. So, I tell people, get up, do an hour walk in the morning, do an hour walk at night. You don't have to calculate. Don't wear your watches, all the gadgets. Just don't think about it. Just go for an hour walk somewhere beautiful in the morning and an hour walk in the evening. Take your family. It is the it's like the quickest way. And then, you know, weight-bearing exercises, too. You have to have that muscle. Um, requires a lot of fuel. And so if you require more fuel and your car is going to try to go faster with the muscle, then you are going to be burning through more fat, which fat on your body is just excess fuel. It's pre-eaten meals. It's just extra fuel that you have stored there. So if you build more muscle, it'll eat through that excess uh fuel that you have built up on your body.
Perfect. Walking is easy and most people can walk. If you can't walk, swimming, aqua aerobics, um push-ups on the wall, any type of movement is so important. Just move in a way that you can move. Um so I have a quick fire game for you. Five foods that can help you burn fat. Tell me your thoughts. Yes or no?
Steak? Yes.
Eggs? Yes.
Protein powder? No, not so much. Why? Because it causes a big insulin spike. It's pulverized protein and protein breaks down to glucose. So this is dried pulverized protein. So it's processed. It's a processed food. And when Tom drinks a protein shake, his blood sugar goes up versus just a steak. If he ate a tenderloin um or he drank a protein shake, his blood sugar is going to go up with that protein shake. It'll go up a little bit with the tenderloin, nice and steady. Um but it the protein shake will cause a big spike. And whenever you get those spikes, you're getting an enormous amount of insulin spiked into your system to handle that spike. So, I'm a no on protein protein powders.
Sardines. Yes. Great way. Great way. So, Dr. Bos is the big sardine um woman, and we do three-day sardine fasts. She's she's really the guru that figured all this out. Um we do three-day sardine fasts over where I'm at. And those girls get their ketones up like crazy. They melt through the fat. You know, some of them lose a couple pounds in 3 days. Um, and you know, some of that's water weight, too. But they just feel amazing. So, sardines, um, superfood in my opinion.
Bacon. No, no on the bacon. Not not really a fat burning tool. Um, even I mean I guess if it's if it's eating a species specific diet with with pork, you know, a little bit is okay, but I see it as kind of like a carnivore treat. Like a it's like carnivore candy for me. Like I'll have bacon on occasion. I'll go out to a restaurant and have some bacon um with my eggs in the morning. You know, I don't buy it. It's kind of like cheese. It's cheese is basically like ice cream. It spike your blood sugar. you can't I mean you're just getting fat from the cheese. So, um I treat it as a treat. Bacon and cheese are treats.
I love that. I um I like how you explain it because, you know, some people are strong advocates of bacon and there's nothing wrong with bacon, but for the end point of fat loss and weight loss, uh you want to treat it as a treat at the end of the meal after your steak or eggs or sardines and salmon is also another good one.
Last question for you. Now, this is interesting. If you have elevated insulin, and I think you mentioned this before, your melatonin, which helps you sleep, is going to be out of whack in the evening. How do you help? How do you increase the melatonin and lower the insulin at night time?
Um, well, we use the blue light blockers. Um, you know, we don't eat past two, so that's the insulin's taken care of. We go for an evening walk. So, we flush out all any of that, you know, immediate glycogen that comes out when you walk. And so, you're going into the evening in a state of, you know, um, uh, where your body has been through all the sugar through the day. You've metabolized everything and your insulin is nice and low in balance where it should be. And then you don't turn on your lights. You don't turn on your blue lit screen. And if you do, you put on the blue light blockers. So that is what we use. You'll see me wearing them in my Zooms. When we are in a place where it's dark, usually I do my Zooms, you know, at night or whatever, it's dark. I put on those blue light blockers and that that helps tremendously because the light will block you from producing melatonin just like insulin blocks you from producing it. So just really the two things are is stop eating so heavy and late at night. Get out and get your evening walk and put on your blue light blockers or turn your lights off in your house and just use candle light. We use um candle light in the evenings. It just a natural beeswax candle and we turn on the candles and it's perfect.
Love it. Was there anything else that we missed? Like any tips for people to burn that fat fast?
Um, you know, I think the biggest thing is understanding how to get in ketosis. When you're in ketosis, you're burning the fat on your body. You don't need exogenous ketones. You want your body to burn its own fat. So, you want your body to take the fat and turn it into ketones, which your body can use as fuel. So, I recommend everybody buy the little blood testing unit. I like the Keto Sense. We also use the Keto Mojo. Um, and understand when they're in ketosis and when they're not. Understand when their body is, you know, using more glucose than ketones and when it's using what it takes to get those ketones up because anytime your ketones go up, you're burning more fat. So, really tracking the ketones is the best way. Pee sticks don't work. Uh, the breath ones, they don't work. We vetted them. It has to be the blood testing unit. It's a simple little unit. It's like a hundred bucks. I don't have any links. Maybe you have a link for them with the code. Um, but the they're like a hundred bucks or less and it will be the best money you ever spend to understand when you're in fat burning and when you're not in fat burning. And all humans should be at at burning glucose and fat at the same time. So those ketones, you know, if you want to to always stay in a state of ketosis, humans should be around 3 to 0.8 for their ketones, just regular with no fat to burn. You have fat to burn, you want them to go higher. So, but if you start going too high on your ketones, you bear the risk of eating away at your muscle because the more fat you're burning is a sign that your body is really low on glucose and glycogen. And so, your body's going to start eating away at its muscle to provide your body with the source of glucose that it needs. So, it's a complex little tricky thing to figure out, but once you do, like I said, metabolic nirvana, but tracking the ketones is the is such an important part.
Okay. How high is too high?
Well, um, you know, I say anything over three or four is is getting into, you know, some some people will get into threes and fours and it's good, but you don't want to be there every day. You don't want to be there every day. That's going to bear the risk of you starting to eat away at your muscle.
Okay. You also have an amazing weight loss program and different programs that you have on your website. Would you like to tell us a little bit about that?
Sure. Yes. So, primobody.com is our website. Um, my Instagram is where, you know, a lot of people are. We have quite a following on Facebook now, too. Um, but I'm the primobody on Instagram and, uh, we do weight loss. That's what I specialize in. After I figured out insulin with Tom and I realized that everyone could benefit from this, we took it to the masses. And so we offer a 12-week course and you come in and I teach you about insulin. I teach you about ketosis. You know, we like to to think of it like a study group, you know, where you're understanding and learning exactly what your body needs for fuel. And we have guides, we have, you know, homework every week, which is what they're going to be doing. They don't have to write essays but um we help support them through this comprehensive learning process of understanding what their body actually needs for protein requirements um for movement and how to burn that fat but also retain and build the muscle because that's really important. We need to have muscle. So, we we target a lot of um uh women that are, you know, women that are 40 through uh, you know, 60 is really my demographic, but I help I I have a lot of young girls right now in my program. We help men. We have a men's program. So, um we're just helping as many people as we can to help them to get the weight off. They always feel better. And my big goal is to get them all in bikinis, get them looking sexy on the beach.
I kind of imagine people like, I don't want to be in a bikini. What would be maybe if you could think of your biggest success story of somebody that you're just like, "Oh my god, they've just transformed their life and their weight loss transformation."
Um, man, I guess I would have to say that Connie comes to mind. Connie, um, she started with me a couple years ago and she's just such a beautiful, sweet person. She's a school, she was a school teacher, so she's retired now, but she had a massive heart attack. Um, the widowmaker heart attack. they call him. Um, and she was in desperate need of help. She had a bunch of stents put in and she felt terrible. She was overweight in the obese category. She felt terrible and she knew she had to do something. And so she heard me talking on Instagram. She joins Parmal Bod and it completely transformed her life. And she's just such a big advocate. She's, like I said, she's an angel. She's the sweetest person. But it completely changed her life and she can't stop talking about it. Um, her story is phenomenal. Love Connie to pieces. But, you know, she feels amazing. All her symptoms gone. You know, the medications go away. She doesn't have to worry anymore. Um, and she's doing great. She's doing remarkable. So, I love that. I love success stories. Anyone that can say that Connie or anyone else that we can help is amazing.
I'll leave all the links in the show notes so that people can find you. And you know, if we can just do the insulin trick, get it down, people can just transform their health. Candy, thank you so much for your time.
