Hi, I'm Joshap. A lot of people are wondering, "Why do I need an Apple TV? You know, I already bought a smart TV or I'm about to buy a smart TV." And that's great. Smart TVs have a lot of things that Apple TV already has.
One of the big things that Apple TV can give you that the smart TVs just can't is AirPlay compatibility. You have an iPhone, an iPod touch, an iPad, an Apple computer. There are great ways for you to stream content from all these devices right to your TV screen.
So right now, I'm watching a movie off my iPad because AirPlay through my home Wi-Fi network is sending this video that's in my iPad to my TV. So I could do that with videos I've taken on my iOS device, pictures I've taken. I want to show you some pictures on my TV, uh, do a little slideshow. I could do that kind of stuff. And that's all because we have AirPlay going.
Now, it went back to the main screen when this video stopped because I'm not mirroring my display. I was just sending content through AirPlay. I could send videos, I could send pictures, and so forth.
If I swipe an iOS device from the bottom, and this could be the same on your phones and iPod Touches, you'll have a control panel here with the AirPlay button. And I could say, "I want to send things to Apple TV." Uh, you'll also have the option, like on an iPhone, I could see the AirPlay logo at the bottom of this little control panel. I could tap AirPlay, I could choose my Apple TV, and I put mirroring on.
So now, even if I were to play a movie, I'll see it here but not here because when the, the video content plays, you only see it on one location. But if I were to back out, sometimes you'll even have like games that are made for you to like be racing and you see the cockpit of the vehicle on your iOS device and the screen up on the TV because it's made for AirPlay. Kind of a cool feature.
One of the best things I would say. Let me get out of here and turn this off by unchecking mirroring. One of the best things is when you have a computer. So like, AirPlay is an automated process. All you need is to be on the same network as the Apple TV. That's pretty much it.
So like my Mac computer, in the upper right corner, I've got a little Apple TV logo, which is like a, a miniature icon of a TV with a triangle pedestal base, kind of. If I just click on that, I'll see an option right here to connect to my Apple TV. And then, depending on the speed of your network, it'll tweak around a little bit until it's ready. And then, boom, you are mirroring your computer display on your TV wirelessly.
So you don't need to worry about what HDMI converter, uh, connector do I need? How can I plug my TV into my computer? You can wirelessly send it now. I can open up iMovie on my Mac, stream full videos that I've been creating in, in iMovie. Or like, if your iTunes library has 100 videos and you want to send video content, you could open up iPhoto, you could do anything on your computer right here wirelessly.
So Apple TV allows AirPlay to happen. That is not a part of any brand smart TV. An Apple TV, again, is that little tiny little black hockey puck. You just plug it into your existing HDTV, and A, it makes it smart, but B, it gives it AirPlay.
So we've got a lot of TVs to choose from that are smart. If you don't get a smart TV, or if you do get a smart TV, consider the Apple TV if you're an Apple guy with an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Apple computer, because AirPlay is awesome.
