A person who understands human psychology can enter the depths of it and strip it down like that. Human psychology, social psychology, is a part of our everyday life. What is happening with an individual in his psychology has been completely torn apart.

It could be that a person is troubled by this bureaucratic system, from the so-called matrix in which we are all stuck in our 9 to 5 jobs. But this person has realized that we are actually stuck somewhere. If you want to change your life, to go to a bigger level, if you want to improve your life, you need to understand how people will start treating you.

Today, we will talk about the minute details of everything. We will do this through Franz Kafka, who is a writer that is less of a writer and more of a philosopher. I see a psychologist in him because he delved into the depths of human psychology, taking it out from inside and weaving it into stories. In these stories, you can understand it better.

But before we move into the book, let’s take a brief introduction to Kafka and why he wrote this book. What was his ulterior motive? Franz Kafka has prepared a complete lecture. But I am here on this channel to discuss a little bit of psychology and philosophy. I am about to start with psychology, so I thought, what could be better than Kafka's "Metamorphosis"? It is an easy-to-understand book, intricate yet filled with minute details and symbolism that make it beautiful.

We will talk about it here, but first, a slight introduction to Franz Kafka. It should be noted what kind of struggles he faced. The first thing he used to do was envision his life. He faced the reality of wanting a different path in life. He was always misunderstood and kept in isolation. His differences with his father made his life very detached from his family.

You will see in his books the struggles he faced, how his mother's relationship deteriorated, and what pressures or constant tensions existed within his family. You will mostly see critiques of the bureaucratic system in his work, which is often referred to as a bureaucratic nightmare.

How are the bourgeoisie populated? How do they eliminate the working class? Kafka tries to show how man gets trapped in this system and cannot escape. The loop runs continuously; it doesn’t get better, it keeps getting worse. In every book by Kafka, hardship begins with suffering, and by the end, the condition worsens, often leading to death.

Assistance is not touched because the existential nail is cut somewhere, but the nail jam goes inside. This reflects the glumness of life, the absurdity of existence. For those interested in Albert Camus, you can see glimpses of absurdism here.

What does that mean? The world wants to explain, and what do we understand? How do we implement it? They find self-sacrifice. I always talk about how a man becomes so emotional while on duty that he forgets about his self-interests and personal needs. If he gives his sacrifice for the world, then this is him.

In "Metamorphosis," a cockroach becomes a vermin. Vermin is something that annoys people. We will explain further, but actually, he could have flown out of his misery. He may have had the potential to escape, but he hid it. His potential was never recognized, and he remained trapped in that same hole.

However, there is an aspect of the story that can also be seen in a different light. In this whole lecture, we will cover different character plots, read symbolism, and explore the philosophy and morals. Do we get morals from this whole book? Are there important things to implement in our lives?

Now, in the book "Metamorphosis," Kafka attempts to show the last stage of psychological distress when a person has lost everything. The story begins with suffering. The part before the transformation gives a glimpse of the suffering that Gregor Samsa faced.

Suddenly, he wakes up one morning with a psychological disorder, finding himself transformed into a vermin. But if you look carefully, Gregor's room is his world. Everything revolves around it. Food comes and goes, and he is crawling in his room while the cleaning is going on.

Whatever happens, happens within those four walls. If it is happening between them, it is happening in the same world about us.

Now, coming to part one, I have made notes, and I will explain from them. Gregor Samsa's troubled life had dreams that implied he was suffering from the pain of his family. There was an illusion in his mind that he was happy with the work he was doing.

But was he really there, or was he being made a fool just to exploit him? The day he turned into that insect, that day maybe that illusion became true. It was an illusion that manifested into a horrible vermin.

If you look at the definition of vermin, it refers to small animals or insects that are harmful and difficult to control. Vermin is disgusting, painful, and harmful. But beyond that, Kafka portrayed the worst imaginable vermin, the dirtiest species of cockroach.

The first and second paragraphs of the book explain the details of the disagreement that makes a person feel disgusted with himself due to external factors. It was like this: "Because of that, I became like this."

Collectively, he became like this, and one morning he woke up as a cockroach. How bad! His life has been ruined. This is the prime example of Kafka's bureaucratic nightmare.

We know we are free, we should be free, but due to various external factors, which make up the bureaucratic system, we are not free. This is explained completely.

Now, how do I come out? My boss is not letting me down. He will say I am late. If I am even 10 minutes late, then my neck will be on the line. Whoever is with us on a daily basis, we feel our time is running out. Even five minutes can affect attendance.

This is the prime example of Kafka's nightmare. A nightmare is basically what you can do to sleep at night. Whatever seems like a nightmare, I used to be very nervous, but after waking up in the morning, even after that, the nightmare continues.

That nightmare remains even after you open your eyes. Nothing can be worse than what is going on. The emphasis given here is Gregor Samsa saying, "If I could sleep a little more, people will think I am lazy."

Even though Gregor Samsa was a successful international salesman throughout his career, he never slacked off. He set his own standards and boundaries in his career. But the same bar and standard turned him into a vermin.

People have set such high standards that they cannot function further. If they leave a little slack, they are seen with evil eyes.

If a teacher is at the blackboard, and he writes 9 out of 10 things correctly, but if he makes one mistake, he will be told that he has written it wrong. Nothing comes of those nine things; they are overlooked and ignored.

But if that one mistake is pointed out, then the point will be resolved. When a kite is made, there will be a lot of emphasis here.

When Gregor Samsa was getting very late to the office, the conversation was going on in bed. He thought he might be having an illusion, that when he wakes up, everything will be fine.

When he wakes up, he sees that he has actually turned into a vermin. This is what I want to talk about. He wants to escape, but his door is locked.

This shows how a person can cut himself off, specifically like Gregor Samsa. He had locked himself up, saying, "This is my world. I don’t want it within my four walls."

Now, there is a good thing and a bad thing about it. The bad thing is that if you try to push people in, they will get cut off. If you are the one in your world and do not want to let anyone in, then why should anyone help you with your psychological distress?

People will think, "It’s okay, he is mentally up and down. It will get better on its own."

When it comes out, you will see both sides. Another important thing is that Gregor can lock his room even while sleeping at night. The sleeping man wants to keep his world to himself, yet Gregor does not want anyone to peek into his world.

If anyone disturbs him, then Gregor Samsa has isolated himself completely. He is the prime example of isolation, converting into the concept of alienation.

Now he is getting isolated and has turned into an alien, which is a challenge for the world. He has made himself an alien.

As we move forward, you will understand what it feels like. In the beginning, it may seem that Gregor Samsa was sitting like this, but you will know that the world has also tried.

The world is responsible for pushing us aside. In the book, it is shown how the world pushes him away. It seems like it’s not the first time that this psychological distress has happened.

It might have happened to Gregor before, but it was not as intense. The methods of metamorphosis show the stage that turned him straight into an insect.

This portrays that the world will see you as a vermin. Who knows, he might not actually be a vermin?

Who knows, because a man is his own worst enemy. Gregor Samsa understands that the world might be showing him as a vermin.

There might be a beautiful bug on his waist. He could have a beautiful pattern there, with fins on his back, with which he could fly.

He could get out of that world, but we will come back to this in the second and third chapters.

There is a journey given here, a very beautiful sign of his whole journey from bed to getting up. From there to standing, a very important and beautiful journey has been shown.

Kafka describes it in such a way that it depicts a depressed man. How to treat a depressed man when he is in bed? He doesn’t feel like getting up, and getting up from the bed is a big sacrifice.

Isn’t it true that when a person is depressed, he doesn’t even feel like taking a bath? Getting up from bed is a mentally draining thing when you are depressed.

This is what happens in clinical depression. If it happens, then minute details are here, but it is given in a way that shows how he rises and falls.

He hits his head and falls down with a thud. He has a problem with completely manifesting it in his physical life.

Here’s an important thing: imagine if two strong people were there to help him. One was his father, and the other was the maid.

Here is an interesting story for you: the father is one of the strongest figures in Gregor Samsa's life, and the maid is its extreme opposite.

The father is the ultimate authority, while the maid has the least authority. Can anyone judge what happened to him?

Kafka means Gregor Samsa as a judge. If he doesn’t do this, then at that time he is imagining this.

This is a very important hidden gem inside this book: all the doors were locked. This line shows that he has shut himself off from the world.

He wants help, but still, he needs help. Gregor Samsa wrote to him with a smile, which is a paradoxical situation.

In such situations, a person gets trapped in psychological distress. I don’t want anyone to care about me, but at the same time, I want someone to help me.

That is what was happening with Gregor Samsa. Now we will be talking about the chief clerk, a brief character whose plot we will read later.

The chief clerk symbolizes the bureaucratic system. If I am late or if today is a holiday, he will say, "You are late."

Gregor Samsa's mother is introduced as a typical mother who loves her child and wants to protect him. She doesn’t have the strength to deal with the world or the bureaucratic system, but she tries her best to protect her son.

Gregor Samsa's family members want to investigate what is actually happening with him. But when they see his situation, they are not very much taken aback.

If they were prepared for this day, it seems they knew that this day was going to come. They knew he was having psychological distress, but they still did not try to help.

Sometimes, it happens among relatives: "You didn’t call me." "I didn’t call you." Both think that the other will extend their hand, but neither does.

Life is spent in resentment. This is the result of grievances. When Gregor Samsa has become a vermin, does anyone care?

Absolutely yes, but they were not taken aback. Falling unconscious, vomiting, running to the toilet—nothing like this happened.

It was probably supposed to happen somewhere in their minds, or they were more in fear than in shock.

People fear only the unexpected. They were not expecting that this could happen to such a person.

You may be more in fear than in shock. Seeing the whole family, Gregor Samsa has no role but that of a locksmith.

The locksmith is like the icebreaker in truth. He takes a break and talks to a person who is passing through pain and suffering.

The locksmith has a small role, but he becomes a psychologist in his life.

A psychologist means a depressed person. There were no psychologists at that time, but the locksmith introduces a person to his close one, saying, "Please help him in this trouble."

The locksmith tells a person that they are in trouble and that they want to help.

Let them help you; let them come into your world. The work a locksmith does is to break locks.

A person who breaks locks or makes locks implies that psychological barriers can be broken.

In distress situations, someone can put a lock on fear. You may not be afraid of this thing; it is useless.

If so, think about how much work it takes to lock it. The locksmith is not a big character; he appears once or twice, but he is trying to show how important he is.

It has been discussed how important the locksmith is. Maybe later in life, Gregor will find his locked room and start expressing his distress.

This shows that in the peak of his alien form, Gregor Samsa is still expressing his distress and wants to tell what society has done to him.

What have the people of this society done to him? You guys are responsible for this situation.

You guys are in the systems. You have to follow the rules. You have to walk in a manner that is acceptable.

This is what Kafka is trying to show. Gregor Samsa is at the peak of his alien form, but he is still expressing his distress.

He wants to tell what society has done to him.

Now, as we move forward, we will see how the chief clerk symbolizes the bureaucratic system.
