There's a kind of darkness that doesn't show up with flashing lights or horror movie theatrics. It doesn't growl or hiss. It smiles. It flatters. It knows just what to say and how to say it to get under your skin and into your soul. It makes you question your worth, your memory, even your sanity. And more often than not, it hides in plain sight. Maybe you've met someone like that. Maybe you're still healing from them.
Narcissism isn't just a personality quirk when you see it up close. The pride, the manipulation, the complete lack of empathy. It becomes something much deeper, something spiritual. Now, let's be real. The word narcissist gets thrown around a lot these days. It's become a buzzword, almost trendy to use. But today, we're not talking about someone who just takes too many selfies or enjoys being the center of attention. We're talking about something more sinister, a behavior pattern that not only breaks hearts and wrecks relationships, but also reflects a deeper war being waged in the unseen realm.
This isn't just psychology. This is spiritual warfare, and the Bible has something to say about it. The word of God tells us we don't wrestle against flesh and blood. That means when you're dealing with a narcissist, especially the kind that leaves you feeling spiritually drained, emotionally shattered, and mentally confused, it's not just them you're fighting. There are forces behind the mask. Spirits that have been at work since the beginning of time, wearing new faces in every generation. Spirits that thrive in pride, deception, control, and rebellion. traits that define not only narcissism but also the kingdom of darkness itself.
Maybe you've sensed that. Maybe you've seen the same destructive patterns in different people and wondered, is this just human brokenness? Or is something more going on here? The Bible doesn't leave us in the dark. It names these spirits. It describes their behavior. And it gives us tools to fight back. Not just to survive the manipulation, but to rise above it in spiritual authority. This message isn't about calling out people. It's about calling out spirits, exposing what's hiding in the shadows so that we can walk in the light because freedom starts with truth. And today we're going to uncover it together.
Number one, the spirit of Lucifer, the root of pride. There's a reason pride is always listed first when God talks about the things he hates. Pride was the original sin before there was murder, idolatry, or rebellion on earth. There was pride in heaven, and it wasn't found in a human heart. It was found in the heart of Lucifer. The prophet Isaiah gives us a chilling picture of Lucifer's fall. In Isaiah 14:12-14, he records the arrogant declarations of the enemy. "I will ascend to the heavens. I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will make myself like the most high." Do you hear it? That constant "I," the obsession with self, the hunger to rise above to be worshiped to be God. That is the root of narcissism. It doesn't just come from insecurity or trauma. It reflects a spirit that has wared against God from the beginning.
Narcissists often live in that same spirit of Lucifer. They demand attention, praise, control. They see themselves as superior, entitled to special treatment, above correction. It's more than unhealthy self-esteem. It's a demonic inversion of God's design for humility and servantthood. And just like Lucifer, narcissists often present themselves as beings of light, charming, charismatic, even spiritual. until you challenge their ego. Then the mask slips. Ezekiel 28 also speaks of Lucifer before his fall. "You were the model of perfection till wickedness was found in you." That's how many victims of narcissistic abuse described their experience. It started perfectly. Everything felt right until it didn't. That sudden shift, that coldness, the manipulation. It's not just human error, it's spiritual influence. Proverbs 16:18 warns us. "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." And that's exactly what happened to Lucifer. He fell. But he didn't fall alone. He took a third of heaven's angels with him. Pride doesn't just destroy the person who carries it. It destroys everyone around them. That's what narcissistic pride does in families, churches, and relationships.
But here's the good news. "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." James 4:6. You don't have to stay under the control of that spirit. You don't have to keep trying to please someone who operates like Lucifer. You have authority in Christ to recognize pride for what it is and to walk in the opposite spirit, humility, truth, and freedom.
Number two, the spirit of Jezebel, control, manipulation, and seduction. If Lucifer is the root of pride, Jezebel is the face of manipulation. Her name might be ancient, but her influence is alive and well, especially in the behavior of narcissists. She was a real woman in scripture, a queen in Israel who married King Ahab. But her legacy isn't remembered for royalty. It's remembered for control, domination, and destruction. Jezebel didn't need to lead from the front. She led through influence. She used her position, her voice, and her emotions to control others. She silenced prophets, twisted truth, and introduced idolatry into God's people. And when she couldn't control someone, she tried to destroy them. Sound familiar?
The Jezebel spirit still functions the same way. It disguises itself in charm and sensuality, but its true goal is always power. Narcissists often operate under this spirit. They use seduction, not always sexual, but emotional and psychological to gain control. They gaslight, distort, guilt trip, and manipulate to maintain their dominance. You'll often find yourself questioning your own reality when under the influence of someone with this spirit. Second Kings 21 gives us a shocking example. Ahab wanted a vineyard that didn't belong to him. When he couldn't get it, he pouted like a child. But Jezebel took over plotting lies, forging documents, and orchestrating the murder of an innocent man just to get what her husband wanted. That's how narcissistic abuse often works. One plays the victim while the other pulls the strings.
In Revelation 2:20, Jesus speaks directly to the church in Thyatira. "You tolerate that woman Jezebel who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching, she misleads my servants." Notice that Jesus isn't just angry at Jezebel. He's confronting the church for tolerating her. That's a warning for us today. We can't keep excusing narcissistic behavior, especially when it brings confusion, fear, and emotional bondage into the lives of others. The Jezebel spirit targets leaders, families, and anyone called by God. It thrives in environments where people avoid confrontation. And it it often partners with the spirit of Ahab, a passive, avoidant spirit that refuses to stand up for righteousness. That dynamic creates cycles of fear, silence, and spiritual decay.
But the word of God is clear. Jezebel's time always runs out. In 2 Kings 9, she met her end not through politics or war, but through prophetic judgment. She was thrown down and her body was left unrecognizable. God is not mocked. The spirit of Jezebel may intimidate, but it cannot overpower a believer walking in truth, purity, and spiritual discernment. If you've been entangled with someone under the influence of this spirit, know this. It's not your fault. You're not crazy. You're not weak. You've been in a spiritual battle. And God is ready to bring deliverance, restoration, and healing. But it begins by calling this spirit by name and refusing to tolerate it any longer.
Number three, the spirit of Leviathan. Twisting deception and division. Some spirits don't scream. They twist. They twist truth. They twist words. They twist relationships. And few spirits are as cunning in this as the spirit of Leviathan. Most people skip right over it in scripture, seeing it as just some ancient sea monster. But in the spiritual realm, Leviathan is much more than that. It's a principality of confusion, pride, and spiritual strangulation.
In Job 41, God describes Leviathan in detail. A creature no man can tame, full of fierce power and impenetrable scales. But listen to verse 34. "He looks down on all that are haughty. He is king over all the children of pride." That line reveals his nature. Leviathan is a ruler over pride. That's not just poetic language, it's spiritual insight. Narcissists operating under this spirit are master word twisters. You try to have a conversation and you leave feeling more confused than when you started. You bring up something that hurt you and suddenly you're the one apologizing. They distort conversations, retell events in ways that serve their image, and leave you doubting your memory and even your sanity. That's Leviathan at work.
This spirit doesn't just confuse, it divides. It whispers into conversations, families, and churches, leaving trails of suspicion, miscommunication, and strife. It inflates egos and isolates hearts. People stop trusting each other even though the real enemy is the twisting spirit working in the background. Proverbs 6:16-19 lists one who sows discord among brothers as something the Lord hates and Leviathan thrives in that very soil.
In Isaiah 27:1, God gives us a prophetic promise. "In that day, the Lord will punish Leviathan, the fleeing serpent. And he will slay the dragon that is in the sea." That's the hope we cling to. No matter how manipulative the spirit may be, it is not greater than the power of the Lord. Leviathan is mighty, but it's not invincible. The blood of Jesus cuts through every twisted lie. If you've ever found yourself in a relationship or environment where clarity is impossible and chaos reigns, you may be dealing with this spirit. But take heart. You don't have to stay in the fog. Ask the Holy Spirit for discernment. He is the spirit of truth. And where the truth reigns, confusion has to go.
Number four, the spirit of Antichrist. Rebellion and self-glorification. The word Antichrist tends to send chills down people's spines. We picture end times villains, global deception, and dark prophecies. But according to the Bible, the spirit of Antichrist is not just something for the future. It's already here. It was here in the days of the apostles, and it's still moving today. Often hiding behind spiritual sounding language and charming personalities.
In 1 John 2:18, the apostle writes, "Even now many antichrists have come." And verse 22 says, "Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the Antichrist, denying the Father and the Son." But here's what's often missed. The spirit doesn't always deny Jesus with words. It denies him through behavior. It exalts self above Christ. It rebels against God's authority. It craves worship, submission, and control. Sound familiar?
Narcissists often operate in this very spirit. They set themselves up as the ultimate authority in their world. They're rarely teachable, rarely accountable, and never wrong in their own eyes. You try to speak truth, and they twist it. You bring scripture and they manipulate it to fit their narrative. The spirit of Antichrist doesn't just attack from outside the church. It hides within it using charisma and spiritual language to mask rebellion and pride. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 describes the man of lawlessness saying he "exalts himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped so that he sets himself up in God's temple proclaiming himself to be God." Again, this is more than an end times prophecy. It's a warning about a spirit that seeks worship and dominion where only God belongs.
This is why spiritual narcissists are so dangerous. They don't just want your attention. They want your allegiance. They position themselves as saviors, as heroes, even as prophets. But their fruit is rebellion. They subtly lead people away from Jesus and toward themselves. And that's the very nature of Antichrist. The tragedy is that many fall for it. Why? Because the spirit of Antichrist doesn't show up looking evil. It shows up looking anointed. It flatters, impresses, and deceives until it's too late and hearts are entangled.
But here's the truth. The enemy doesn't want you to know. Christ lives in you. The same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead gives you discernment and authority. You don't have to bow to this spirit. You don't have to tolerate rebellion or false spiritual leadership. 1 John 4:4 reminds us, "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." When you encounter narcissism that sets itself up above truth, remember you're not just facing a person. You're confronting a spirit. And that spirit has already been defeated by the name above all names, Jesus Christ.
Number five, the spirit of delusion, masking reality. Some spirits don't just lie, they create entire false realities. They don't just twist the truth. They bury it under layers of charm, intellect, and confusion. The spirit of delusion is one of the most dangerous forces behind a narcissist. Because it doesn't just deceive others, it deceives the narcissist themselves. This is the spirit that convinces a person that they are godlike, untouchable, justified in their behavior. Even when their actions clearly oppose God's truth.
In Romans 1:21-22, Paul describes people who knew God, but refused to honor him. "Although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him. Their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools." That's delusion in action. When pride becomes so thick that the mind can no longer perceive truth, this spirit operates powerfully in narcissists. They're not just pretending to be someone they're not. They truly believe their own projection. They believe the lies they've crafted about themselves. They live in a self-made illusion of superiority, victimhood, or infallibility. And even when faced with clear truth, they can't or won't see it. That's not just stubbornness. That's a spiritual blindness.
In 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12, Paul speaks even more directly. "They perish because they refuse to love the truth. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie." That's chilling. When someone repeatedly rejects the truth of God, he eventually allows them to be handed over to deception, not to punish them, but because they insisted on choosing the lie. This is what makes dealing with a narcissist so exhausting. You bring facts. They rewrite the story. You set boundaries. They accuse you of betrayal. You point to scripture. They twist it to make themselves the victim. You feel like you're talking to a wall. And spiritually you are. A wall built by delusion and reinforced by pride.
But make no mistake, this spirit isn't just keeping the narcissist trapped. It's trying to entangle you, too. It wants you to believe their reality, to accept their version of events, to second-guess your discernment. It clouds your mind until you no longer know what's true. But God has a remedy, his spirit of truth. John 16:13 says, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth." You don't have to live in the fog. You can break free. You can reject the delusion and embrace the clarity of God's word. When you feel confusion creeping in, go back to what God has already spoken. When you start questioning your worth, go back to the cross. When you feel like you're the crazy one, go back to the light. Truth exposes lies. Light scatters darkness. And no delusion, no matter how convincing, can stand against the revealed word of God.
Number six, the spirit of Python. Suffocation, manipulation, and control of prayer. There's a kind of spiritual oppression that doesn't feel loud or violent. It feels suffocating, like something is wrapped around your soul, squeezing the life out of your prayer life, your worship, your clarity. That's the spirit of Python. It's subtle. It's deadly. And according to the book of Acts, it's real.
In Acts 16:16, Paul and Silas encounter a slave girl who had a spirit of divination. The original Greek word there is *pythonos* or Python. This wasn't just a fortune teller. She was under demonic influence, a spirit that controlled her and made money for her masters by mimicking spiritual insight. That's exactly how the python spirit works today. It mimics revelation, manipulates truth, and constricts spiritual life.
Narcissists operating under this spirit are spiritually stifling. They don't just control people's emotions. They dominate the spiritual atmosphere. When you're around them, it's hard to pray. It's hard to think clearly. It's hard to hear from God. You begin to feel spiritually paralyzed, confused, silenced. And over time, you stop reaching out to God, not because you don't want to, but because you feel blocked, drained, exhausted. The python spirit seeks to do three things: Constrict, counterfeit, and control.
Constrict, like the snake it's named after, it wraps around slowly, squeezing the breath out of your spiritual lungs. It suffocates your freedom, your expression, and your discernment. Victims often say they don't feel like themselves anymore. That's Python. Counterfeit. Just like the slave girl in Acts, narcissists under this spirit may seem spiritual. They may use Christian language, quote scripture, even lead ministries. But it's not the Holy Spirit at work. It's imitation, performance without substance. And over time, the fruit reveals itself: manipulation, control, confusion. Control. Python doesn't just want influence. It wants dominance. It demands loyalty, compliance, silence. It doesn't tolerate dissent or truth. It wants to dictate how others think, feel, and even worship. And when you resist, it tightens its grip.
But here's the breakthrough. When Paul had enough of that spirit, he didn't argue with it. He didn't entertain it. Acts 16:18 says, "Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, 'I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.' And it came out that very hour." That's authority. That's power. And that same power is in you through the Holy Spirit. If you've been living under a spirit that makes you feel like your prayers bounce off the ceiling, if you felt spiritually numb, confused, or disconnected, it may not be you. You may be entangled with someone operating under the python spirit. But the moment you recognize it, you can take your authority back. You don't need louder prayers. You need clear authority. Speak the name of Jesus. Saturate yourself in truth. Disconnect from every relationship that chokes your spiritual life. The breath of God still breaks the grip of the serpent. Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Breathe again. Pray again. Stand in the power of Christ again.
Number seven, the spirit of haughty eyes. Arrogance and superiority. Some spirits don't scream or slither. They stare. They look down. They lift themselves up by pushing others down. The Bible calls this haughty eyes. And make no mistake, it's not just an attitude problem. It's a spirit that God himself says he hates.
Proverbs 6:16-17 begins with a chilling list. "There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue." The very first thing on the list is this look of superiority, not murder, not idolatry, not greed, haughty eyes. That should tell us something. The spirit of haughty eyes operates through narcissists who believe they are above correction, above consequence, and above you. They don't just think highly of themselves. They think less of everyone else. It's not just confidence. It's spiritual arrogance. It's the belief that they are the standard, the source, the final word. And they carry that posture into every relationship.
This spirit fuels toxic cycles of emotional and spiritual abuse. You bring up your pain. They accuse you of weakness. You ask for boundaries. They call you rebellious or disloyal. You try to share your perspective. They roll their eyes or mock your emotions. Every interaction becomes a silent power struggle where they must maintain superiority at all costs. That's not personality. That's spiritual warfare.
Jesus warned about this spirit constantly. In Luke 18:9-14, he tells the story of a Pharisee and a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, "God, I thank you that I am not like other people." That's haughty eyes. But the tax collector, broken and humble, beat his chest and said, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner." And Jesus said, "He, not the proud Pharisee, went home justified." The Pharisee's problem wasn't just legalism. It was spiritual pride. And Jesus made it clear. "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Luke 18:14.
The spirit of haughty eyes is anti-repentant. It resists introspection. It doesn't confess. It accuses. It doesn't listen. It lectures. And tragically, many people under its influence cloak it in false spirituality. They use their wisdom or discernment as a weapon. They speak as if they have divine insight, but their fruit is arrogance and oppression, not humility and love. This spirit is a counterfeit of God's authority. It mimics leadership, but destroys intimacy. It shuts down real dialogue and it isolates people, convincing them that no one else sees what they see or knows what they know. That isolation is deadly. It's how abuse continues unchecked in families, ministries, and marriages.
But there's hope because there's another kind of posture that moves heaven. The posture of humility. James 4:10 says, "Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up." You don't need to fight for position. You don't have to prove your worth to someone operating under haughty eyes. Let God lift you up. Let him heal what pride has broken. God is raising up a generation that doesn't lead through ego, but through servantthood, who don't stare down from thrones, but kneel at the feet of Jesus. You don't fight arrogance with arrogance. You fight it with truth, with grace, and with a surrendered heart that refuses to be chained by spiritual superiority.
A conclusion. Exposing darkness. Walking in authority. We've uncovered some heavy truths today. not to scare you, but to awaken you. Because narcissism isn't just a psychological disorder. It's often a symptom of deeper spiritual forces at work. Behind the mask of charm and confidence can be ancient spirits: Lucifer, Jezebel, Leviathan, Antichrist, Delusion, Python, and Haughty Eyes. Each with a unique strategy to deceive, control, and destroy.
But here's the greater truth. Jesus has already won. Every one of these spirits was defeated at the cross. Every lie exposed, every chain broken, every stronghold shattered. You are not helpless in the face of narcissistic abuse. You are not crazy. You are not alone. You are a child of God filled with the Holy Spirit, clothed in righteousness, and equipped with spiritual weapons that pull down strongholds. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness." That means your battle isn't just with a person. It's with the spirit working behind them. And that's good news because people are not your enemy. Spirits are. And spirits can be confronted, resisted, and cast down in the name of Jesus.
So what do you do now? First, stop tolerating what God calls evil. Don't excuse manipulation. Don't explain away spiritual abuse. Name it, expose it, bring it into the light. Second, pray for discernment, not paranoia. Discernment. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what's really going on. He's not the author of confusion. He leads in truth. Third, take back your authority. Narcissistic spirits hate confrontation, but the Bible says, "Resist the devil and he will flee from you." James 4:7. And finally, cling to Christ, not just as savior, but as your defender, your deliverer, your healer. He knows the damage done by spiritual pride and abuse. He sees the tears behind closed doors. And he's not standing at a distance. He's in the fire with you. The same Jesus who silenced demons with a word, who exposed hypocrites with a question, and who delivered the oppressed with compassion, he lives in you. And he's still delivering people today, including you. Walk in freedom. Walk in clarity. Walk in truth. You were never created to live under the control of darkness. You were born to shine in the light. In Jesus name, rise up.
