German soldier bones colonized by tree roots - Dust to dust - WWII exhumations

During the exhumation of a long-forgotten German field cemetery, it was found that one row of bodies was buried under a row of trees.

After the trees were removed with an excavator, the diggers were surprised to find that all the skulls of the soldiers buried beneath the trees had been heavily colonized by roots. Having been molded by the insides of the skulls, they looked unsettlingly like human brains.

The tree roots had further mimicked the human nervous system by following the spinal canal within the backbone, thus keeping some of the vertebrae attached to each other as they had been when the soldiers were still alive.
