Did you ever wish writing lyrics wasn't so hard? In this video, I'm going to share a technique for how you can write lyrics easily.
Hi, I'm Tony from Songwriters Chop Shop. One of the ways we can write song lyrics that connect with the listener is by getting them to see what we do. In other words, adding detail in the right way. And an easy way to do that is with the ASACK method.
A is for Action. This kind of detail includes what you're doing, what is happening around you, how it's happening, where and when it's happening. And this goes for any point of view. Just pick a part of your body and ask, where is it? What is it doing? For example, your hands. Where are they? On a steering wheel. Okay, so you're driving. Or your butt. Where is it? In a chair. Okay, so you're sitting. Where are you sitting? It includes any action at all, past, present, or future.
S is for Senses. This type of detail includes how you're experiencing the action through your senses: sounds, sights, smells, touch, and taste. So pick a sense and describe what it's experiencing. For example, hearing: comes the radio. Or sight: watching the time roll away.
E is for Emotion. This one's straightforward enough. It's simply how you feel about things on an emotional level.
C is for Commentary. This is any thoughts or commentary that you have about the action or the emotion. It shows your attitude towards a subject.
Using these four types of detail, we can really paint a full picture of the situation that the lyric is about. And you can mix and match and blend these details any way that feels right to you. Let's look at "Passenger Let Her Go." This line has a blend of action and senses. It's describing what he's doing and how it's experienced through his visual sense. Emotional: this is about how he's feeling as the action is happening. Commentary: he tells us what he thinks of the emotion he's feeling.
