[Music] It was on Sunday, 2nd March 1975, when then firebrand, the under our North Member of Parliament, popularly known as JM karaoke, was reported missing, and his body found 10 days later at Nairobi City Mortuary. It is said he was assassinated at Kingsway House. 45 years later, we trace his final 48 hours alive before he was murdered. My name is Duncan Hamburg. This is KTN News.

It is reported that the legendary, our own North legislator and Assistant Minister for Tourism and Wildlife, Josiah Manga karaoke, aka JM, knew too well that he was living on borrowed time, in that any minute, you'd be killed by government operatives. It is claimed that together with his boss, somebody now deceased, from an A cool town Member of Parliament, McMath Agha, as they were playing darts of a drink at Nakuru's Stads Head Hotel, then Acrew member over schewe and his associate stormed the hotel, went straight to JM karaoke and Ngawa and uttered these chilling words, and I quote, "You want to bring trouble in Nakuru? Just be warned, your days are numbered. We are going to finish you."

And of course, the statement got JM worried because earlier on, while in the capital, Nairobi, Assistant Minister delayed Godfrey Gita, he karaoke, or GG karaoke, had whispered to JM that a secret meeting had taken place in Nakuru, and a decision made that he had to be eliminated by all means. The plan was to stage a political and security scare, then blame it on him. Valletta Thakur said GG karaoke had further evil JME that those plotting his assassination had been hosted at State House, Nairobi, and pieced together some excerpts of his fiery speeches as concrete evidence that the firebrand lawmaker was setting a stage for a revolution against the government. For instance, they banked heavily on JM's slogan that it was morally unacceptable to have a Kenya of ten millionaires and 10 million beggars. As a concerned friend, Gigi karaoke implored on JM that it was imperative to meet then President, with Jomo Kenyatta, and explain himself, since he was considered a threat to the aging Kenyatta's reign. Jomo Kenyatta used to say that in Akron oona quaggan, and uma moded kangini, catty Jerry book, and a few attack, wait for your time. So he was trying to say that he would not mind JM being the next president, but DM should not come out with 40 lists. He is 6 million in Vegas attack. James land Aquitania is a former member of the dreaded Special Branch squad, who claims JM karaoke was not supposed to be killed on that fateful Sunday of 2nd March 1975. JM was never to be killed. The intention of the JM was an accidental death. Whataya, who is talking about James assassination for the first time, explains how he found himself a member of the vicious crack unit.

"When we joined the Special Branch as from success, we were taken to the air lights. So you are given access to all government secrets because we, we were replacing illiterate people. We were replacing illiterate people. So when we were replacing literate people, you are given access. So that is how I came to know these dates of other Kenyans who are there even before, like Tom Boya. When he died, when I was in sanity to me, I had I went to Nuthouse. I went and came across those documents."

After member aguas threat in Nakuru and the GG karaoke disclosure, JM is said to have approached the lead in Jenga Karuma, seeking his assistance in setting a debt with President Kenyatta. The fast before the appointment could be secured, JM karaoke was asked by his doctor to go to a warm place like Mombasa and relax, since one of his legs had a problem, vocation by the beatings he received while in detention during the Mau Mau struggle. He's said to have planned to travel to Mombasa by bus on first March, but was quickly tipped that he was being trailed and advised to cancel the trip, since the besieged leader knew he was living on borrowed time. He bought the idea and aborted the mission without informing anyone. Few minutes before the RTC bus he could have boarded left the capital for Mombasa, a bomb exploded and killed at least 27 passengers. JM karaoke could have been among the casualties. He had escaped death by a whisk. His surviving that initial well-hatched assassination, but are known to him, the cloud of death hanging over his head was not gone. In less than 24 hours, he was assassinated.

[Music] On that fateful day, Sunday, the 2nd of March 1975, JM is said to have been lured into an emergency meeting by then GSU Kommandant and his friend, they let Benghazi, where he was to be interrogated by Special Branch officers. Knowing what was up, stack karaokes said to have been hesitant because earlier his pistol had been withdrawn by me and our WA DC Joseph thought, leaving him defenseless. However, yet he prevailed upon him to honor the Simon's, promising to cover him by accompanying him to the meeting at the Special Branch headquarters, Kingsway House, along the University Way. JM had a success feeling that those people the humming. So JM said, "I cannot go to meet those people if I am not armed." Today, they gave JM service pistol. They gave JM our service pistol. So, DM went to Kingsway House, the original nachos, it's called Kings we have. JM went to that house while armed with a pistol. Nobody knew DM had any report. It was only then get the whole new DM had a pistol from only do Murad. They drove to the meeting where he found a hostile interrogation panel, mean-looking men who appeared impatient. So he went there, sat down. It was an interrogation. These people are seated just the way you attend an interview when you're going to be employed. There is day. So the panel, but at the gates, not the gate, the door. Gary had sat there, seated.

It was at this juncture that the life of me and our North legislator was brutally brought to an end by nan Havana's friend and yes you commandant Ben Gavi, who had walked him to the gallows. James last minutes were this way. Last minutes on earth. There was somebody called Juanique a dupe. When you Iike took was a police reservist of the rank of Senior Superintendent. Patrick show was a police reservist. Way gonzo, we got you. It was not affect policeman. Why ganja is for this free service or the rank of assistant commissioner. Well Gallo has never been a fake policeman. It is a political service. So when you Iike through coup was a police reservist. That is why I used to open the door for the converter president. Now, a from Moya, they started a military mind. But Yomo cannot. It was the police. So Anika through coup argued with Jay and his lovely Jaya. He was a heavy bill. When he slapped them, the teeth came out. JM went for I want you to get this picture. JM was seated with a with a gun. Nobody knows GM as a gun. It is only the GS you commander and the GS you commanded all GS you, all the su, our sharpshooters. There's no GS you who is not a computer. So there is a sharpshooter there who knows that I have a gun. And when Annie was slapped, the bed teeth came out. When the tooth came out, JM went for the pistol. When he went for the pistol, nanny's shot him and fractured his handy. Then gates Benghazi short GM for the first time and disabled behind Dominika. Thermo was a little civilian who was part of President John McCain at a security detail, and that is the reason yet I decided to sacrifice JM by shooting him to save his job. Thermo was not a police officer, but held titles of inspector of police and seniors pretendin of police on various occasions because of the ties he had with Jose Kenyatta. From I was a youth winger in cow patty, whose duty was to provide escort and security to luminaries in the pre-independence party. It is during this period that he and Jomo Kenyatta trust, since it is claimed he was a tough nut ready to die or kill for the boss, and he hailed from cotton dough as well. After Independence Day, Kenyatta is said to have demanded that thermo and his ilk be included in the lethal presidential security detail, even though he had never had any police training. Owing to the fact that they did not qualify for training in VIP protection abroad, the gang was taken to Czechoslovakia for basic training in gun handling. It is that same squad that is reported to have shot dead a madman in Naku, once rushed to the main daya's at a presidential event. The victim was killed instead of being restrained from reaching the president, as per the training that all elite VIP gods receive. When DM wanted to shoot him at the spa of the minute, at the spur of the minute, Naina felt get if the AM who was a mountain person, so he knows our trunk. If he kills this person, the president will ask, "How did he get a gun?" I gave him a GSU pistol. You say JM shoots vannacutt roku. Music su pistol, it would have landed in problems. So he shot the disabled the hand. Our decision then was made. But you see JM walk on gas on nowadays, the same the minke. So they knew that JM with a plasti and without teeth, you'd say what was happen. So that is when a decision was made for JM to be killed. But then, that Sunday afternoon assassination was abrupt. Both the sin and the time. There was panic and confusion reigned. The Quiles didn't know what to do next, what to tell President Kenyatta, and the biggest predicament was where to take James lifeless body. Then get a shortage am twice to disable the hunt and second to now. After you know, when you want to kill somebody, you have to make arrangements to lead him to the place and then to. But then here is somebody who was not supposed to be even slapped, suddenly is dead. He is bleeding and whatever. That time when JM had died, that we just previously before that time, the government had ordered all all pickups that are carrying meat will be painted white with a red strip with the one who needs. So they went out some way around the venue garden, found a vehicle, kidnapped that vehicle, placed the JM there. So when the vehicle was going, the in blood was but you see when you are following that vehicle, ie what the elaborate. So that is why I am there was not even a plan. Even you want to kill somebody, you're gonna plan somewhere where to go. His body was discreetly taken to Gong Forest and dumped, hoping that should not be traced. But surprisingly, wild animals simply refused to eat the body of form Assistant Minister for Tourism and Word Life. Funny, other people have killed other people there because they must say we discovered him. You see that people used to today, but this one highness did eating. And then he was taken there. JM karaoke was reported missing that very Sunday when he failed to return home. A frantic search by his family and friends started. Season reporter who can report as Matt Lee, the rest African male body found in gone forest and the chicken to the city moisture. So pouring waited to to follow up. That thing had been blocked with a black black yeah, black man. Let's get ourselves a car from the video camera. Echo-y jacket, elevator, different time element, allow you the fish analysis is not cool. You know what we are OTC correlative Topanga team game of Akron PD.

[Music] Lucky me, photographer. And I think for the body to decompose in Parliament, his colleagues were breathing fire and brimstone following his disappearance. His former Nakuru Member of Parliament, delayed McMath Agha, and the late Martin She cook, once stated government was hard-pressed to explain the founders. Discussing the motion on his disappearance, and Moy was just say, "The intelligence report, the CID reporter sieve is that he was in Zambia and he left the Sheraton Hotel, Intercontinental Tell for Tanzania." We had a woman yelling, and I wondered who it was at the Parliament, and she saying, "Jeremy's dead. Jem is dead." Murray dropped her as well. What did you find? He's the body of his kid. When we heard this, we took out a white handkerchief and started wiping out. Yes, and he said, "If that is true, that may be made to Turkey and slice, I am very, very sorry about it." It was about 6:30 p.m. when JM karaoke's fast wife, Doris Neom Borah karaoke, together with other family members, stormed the chambers wailing. The session abruptly came to an end as furious MPs rushed to the City Missouri to confirm what JMS wife had reported. Already, the security apparatus were making plans to sneak the body out that evening, and didn't know that James family would return that very evening accompanied by members of Parliament. We surrounded the moocher, and we know those windows of the motel page, you can see what is inside. So we surrounded it, and do it. We said, "You want to go ahead?" We found the Special Branch office at Parliament.

[Music] Was now bearing a label here called Moisturi attendance. We hadn't even thought of him as such until Grace Onyango, MP for Kisumu Town, called him out by name, and he asked me, "The loo, he said, Dogma charity dance, have you turned out to be nice to the motor attendant? You changed the filthy words." Talk now, as we about to leave, was it that doesn't look at that dead body on the table, who is being checked out? So I look at here, say, "This is JM." But all my friends disagree with me. The MPs flocked the mockery and was surprised to find a Special Branch spy who operated in Parliament was in supervising the process of releasing James body to a group that was wailing outside the motor. A late in the evening, Amata, that is unusual. James body header tag on his toe, labeled a loo of gangsta. His killers had knocked off three of his lower incisors to justify that indeed he was a war on the legs. There was a tired label in unclaimed body of the Luo gangsta. Lose what the enhancer to Parliament. We recorded them, and there's some Louis waiting to cut it. That body there will be just filling forms. We just this again story. I was so angry. I knew, you know, because no one, you know, we are dealing with the rotten people. Sometimes it even is stop talking to them. Who asking, looking for information from me? You know, for information from where? I didn't plan to be available for me. How do you do to that? Here, Rosemary karaoke, machine second bond child of the late JM. She was in primary school when their father was assassinated. When you look at my family, there's people would prefer to be out of the country. On the 2nd of March, my family members, I think they want to be taken away from this Kenyan environment that reminds them of the terrible, terrible past, a lot of betrayal. What we would like to see is what do you like anticipating through the teacher protest is some type of healing and reconciliation. That is what you would like to see. We'd like to change that day from being such a miserable, sad day, from being a day where we want to remember, end up in a happy environment. But this is what JM stood for. This, even if he died, this is how he lived his life, in a positive way, you know, right now. But there's still a gloom that hangs over heads because if an issue that has not really, has not been addressed. Ten days later, on 12th March, Police Commissioner Bernard Hingaa finally confirmed to the anxious nation that JM karaoke was dead, and he had been killed by two bullets. The assassination raised tension across the country, a situation that made the government and easy amid riots that was staged by Nairobi University students, even as the government denied involvement.

When you are Rahman stretching on March 2nd, 1975, the songs, the slogans, well, basically to define, you know, the system then and say, you know, you can't win. I think that spirit still remains with the Kenyan. See, if the government is not involved, why are government institutions and individuals from covering up? You don't need to cover up if you're not involved. So we get the the issue of Zambia. We kept the government coming in because Kenyatta then comes in and takes a fly, a much past of the the army two, three days later, absolutely marching from duska on Ronald Angela's feet. What is not wrong Angela on to near Kenya cinema and down what was then government ruled is now my avenue to show. And the irony of it, don't is this. This is what the British used to do. What was the first thing that was done when the emergency was declared? The Lancashire Fusiliers landed, and that same morning, marched down Delaware Avenue. It is always tyranny is very unoriginal. We use all these formulas and repeat them, repeat them. So why do you do this unless you saw that him, is whether he was alive or his death was a real challenge to them? As Kenyatta wanted it to be, the kind of dictatorship was was really, really to scare not only the revolutionaries but the ordinary people because it was a gruesome murder. Van on manga was Zambia's foreign affairs minister at the time, and JMS close ally, whom it was alleged he had paid a visit. The period he went missing, he met James family many years later. James that must, it took place as far as I'm concerned, under highly suspicious circumstances because I have not been able to come up with a very credible story or credible information to tell me how he actually met his death. And I find this very strange for a person who was as prominent as it was in Kenya, that was very, very strange. PMR disappeared, and we took our passes, we traveled the whole 100 kilometers to Kaname farm, and I can tell you from gibeom up to the farm, a distance of about 16 kilometer, no idea zoos or over there are more than four roadblocks that we had to go through. It only took the most courageous to go to the finner of JM. So the mood was very tense, really ugly, very, I want to use the light one, very compromising. The camera come and expose itself openly that they were the perpetrators because what, who have those cheap doing there in the home of sadness where the Emily is mourning? Only true addict radius friends would come. What are those troops for? But where are they when they the most being killed? Someone like Simeon si, who was the representative of the government, sent by Kenyatta to stick his condolences there, was talked from speaking. People said, "We don't want to hear the government condolences because if they had not murdered a.m., there would have been no catalyst message." When I realized the going was difficult, and I had been stopped, you also just changed tomb and started singing what the people wanted to hear, and it delivered also a very national message, and stopped reading the government condolence message because it was seen as false and as shedding crocodile tears when they could well have done better. My key back, he was the only government officially serving as cabinet minister who attended the button work about his book. He said, "We'll have to get to the bottom of this model. However long it takes, we'll have even if it takes a hundred years, we'll have to know who my dad's Jacob."

A report by a parliamentary select committee that was chaired by the late Elijah Mangala was manipulated by the executive. When the committee chair tabled the report, Kisumu town Member of Parliament, Grace Onyango, pointed out that it had been doctored at State House. Unknown to many, Grace Onyango and Martin Shikoku had hidden a copy of the original report in committee room 7 in Parliament, which contained the names President Kenyatta had removed. The let mark with a ger was the committee's vice chairman. Thank him. When we were now to go to State House, when he arrived, they was in a special observer there, where we were ushered in. He was fuming, was very, very, very, he'd change his color to almost chocolate. I've had a lot of thoughts as to what to do with us.

[Music] And he said, "It appears even if it was not for being polite, good, even a put my name." He was trying to amend something on the book, say himself. And he asked Margaret windows, a dirty castle, the name of Buchanan gay and the Anika dongho. But a true the remains the truth. When we reached Parliament, one thing that we had to do, either table the report immediately, ball, which for another day, and it will never have been tabled. And one girl was told by members, short speech, don't dwell on it too much. He's been reaching some little peepers, just to shorten the introduction. But when like true cup with I took over the floor to second as vice chairman, it took me two and a half days, and refused to be pushed around. When I decided to actually put the record straight.

This seems to me the the idea in the country is reconciliation. So we also would like to be reconciled. You see, JM was perceived as anti-establishment, and then that just has happened for so long, for many years. What we would like is for this narrative to change, such that it is, it is we commemorate the good that JM did for this country as a 40. It's a dot from independent filadyne, the best assassination. This harder time we've come to celebrate as a country, the gains, what he did, what even if he died, he died fighting for something. That thing, what, what was it that he was fighting for? And what had he done in those years that he was, he fought for independence, then he was in Parliament, whatever that he did, it should be celebrated. You look around this country and you see there's a great squad, a crowed, there is tomboy, there's a gala, there's all those names, but you will never find a community. Why there is yoga MapInfo? Also our case is different because you see the the when he was, when GM was killed, and the government started as an economy, there were even no implementation of that Senate committee. So I would say, at least boya, they went to court, and somebody looked like they were jailed or something happened. There was some end to that time. I was there. Was no, there was no closure. There was just no ending. It was, he was killed, and there's a silence. So I think that we would like that narrative to change. We'd want to be accepted into the community of Kenyans as we should be proud of what JM stood for. Former Special Branch spy James what anger maintains then planned execution of JM on that very day caught the perpetrators on our ass in that they dint have an elaborate cover-up plan, which in turn exposed the government. They didn't do a good job because they didn't plan way. But this fellow who was in a kuru, I don't know that you know the case. It was not other people, it is the CID people did it, but they did it so well. He was suspected of being a financial crooks, and whenever he went to court, he would win the cases. So he took out three teams. The first team killed it. The second team buried him in a public cemetery. Then the third team came at night with an accident. We worked on a Google number Garrick uber uber an accident victim. They took out the body and placed there. So when the judge called, she fell or something for that, the examination, they found this was not a puzzle. Actually, this professor knows no, because the first team a said that he was shot and he was taken to this gravy, and then when the grave was taken, it was somebody a drunk who was walking around, and he was hit by a vehicle and claimed. So this fellow's not. And that is how that person just disappeared. Any any any premeditated murder, usually it is harder to find blames. You know, whoever tries to run away from this matter and try to remove government from involvement is just playing with intelligence of Kenyans. And in this success of government working bare responsibility, Acosta's government. Duncan, member for KTN News.
