Outside the city gate sat four lepers, isolated and starving. They looked at one another in despair. One finally spoke, "Why should we stay here until we die? If we go into the city, the famine will kill us. If we stay here, we will also die. But if we go to the Aramine camp, they may spare us or we may die. Either way, we must act."
At the city gate sat four lepers, outcast from their people. Hunger nodded at their bones, and death seemed certain wherever they turned. Finally, they reason among themselves. Why sit here until we die? If we enter the city, famine awaits us. If we remain here, we perish. Let us go to the camp of the Aramines. If they spare us, we live. If they kill us, we shall only die.
As the lepers approached the Aramine camp, they expected resistance or even death. But to their amazement, the camp was silent. God had caused the Aramines to hear the sound of chariots and horses, and in fear they fled, leaving behind their tents, food, and treasures.
The four lepers, filled with both fear and wonder, stepped deeper into the deserted camp. To their amazement, they found food, drink, and treasures left behind in haste. Hungry and weary, they ate and drank their fill and then carried away silver, gold, and clothing, hiding them for themselves.
After filling their stomachs and hiding treasures, the lepers paused. Conscience gripped their hearts. They said to one another, "What we are doing is not right. This is a day of good news, and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let us go at once and report this to the king's household."
With heavy steps, the lepers approached the city gates. They called out to the gatekeepers, sharing the incredible news. The enemy had fled. The camp was full of food, silver, and gold. At first, their word seemed unbelievable. But soon, the message began to spread like wildfire through the starving city.
The four lepers rushed back to Samaria and called to the city gatekeepers. They shouted, "We went to the Aramine camp and no one was there. The tents are full of food, silver, and clothes." But the enemy has fled. The gatekeepers relayed the message and the whole city stirred with hope.
That night, the king was cautious. He feared it was a trap by the Aramines, luring Israel out of the city to destroy them. Its scouts were sent to investigate. They rode cautiously toward the camp, their hearts pounding as they approached the silent tents. To their amazement, they found no army waiting in ambush, only abandoned supplies, scattered clothes, and riches left behind.
The scouts rode back quickly and brought word to the king. They told of the empty tents, the abandoned weapons, and the food left behind in plenty. At last, the prophecy of Alicia was proven true. What once seemed impossible had become a miracle before their very eyes.
The scouts confirmed what the lepers had said. The camp was empty, abandoned in haste. The people of Samaria rushed out in a great multitude, flooding into the enemy camp. There they found food, drink, silver, and gold. The city that once starved was suddenly filled with abundance.
