Preparing the gravel and sand for pavers, you'll notice a 2x4 matches the thickness of the pole and the P. So I want to set this pole at a height that when the 2x4 runs across it, it sticks up above the concrete about 3/16 of an inch.

Now that that's set, I'm going to run a board out to the outer pole and I'm going for a 1% slope away from the pool. I'm adjusting both ends of the pole and the middle.

Now the poles are set to the right elevation for gravel. So I'm going to spread gravel, flatten it with a calong, and then scre it. Next, I'll fill the voids where the poles were, wet it, and compact it.

Now I'm going to place the poles back and spread sand all throughout the area. The inner and outer pole can be fine-tuned so that the paper butts up just right and the slope is correct.

Now dragging a board across the two poles leaves the P sand just right. Pull the poles, fill the void, and it's ready for pavers.
