This week, Prince, stop, stop, Graham meets a star with real [Music] X-factor: a pup Queen who's been overthrown by one of her own dogs. He thinks he rules this world; you know, he runs it, he owns it, and there's nothing you can do about it. An Old English sheepdog with a Death Wish. Woo, no, no, no, no. Will, will, no, he's going to get run over; he's going to get run over, and I, I can't stop it. Well, no, I just want to give him safe cuz I love him. Oh my God, Coco, Coco, stop. And a lady whose rescue dog, and all everyone can hear is Coco barking, is at risk of destroying her fledgling dog-walking business. I've got these business cards, and I'd love to give them out, but I honestly think if I just went up to someone, they would just laugh in my face.
First up, Graham's kicking off with a visit to a very familiar face: Prince. Prince to a very familiar face. It sounds as a prince might be a bit spoiled, should we say? Perhaps, maybe he's a bit of a diva; maybe he's a clue in the name: The Little Prince, eh? He's in Hartford at the request of a songstress in dog distress. Hello, hello Alexandra. Hi, good morning. How are you? I'm very well, thank you. This is the wonderful Prince. That's Prince, is it? Do come in, my darling. He's all ready for you, and he's not the only one, right? Blim me. Well, you've got five dogs there. Yes, my partner and I have five dogs. Right, a lot. Yeah, it is rather a lot. Yeah. So how come he's the one in your arms? So this is the reason why he's in my arms. Okay, okay. All right. Because he likes the attention, because you've just fed Teddy. Right, that's why he's now up, needs to be center of attention. All right. Okay. Okay. Prince, stop, stop. Teddy, no, Prince, stop.
Alexandra Burke has made a name for herself on stage and screen, but in her local village… Are you Alexandra? I am. Yes. Hello. Oh my goodness. Hi. She's famous for all the wrong reasons. Okay, all right, okay. Namely, her 9-year-old Chihuahua, Prince. When I go to the fields, I never let Prince off a lead. Jesus Christ, Prince, Prince, Prince. Prince doesn't know his size, so he thinks he's a Great Dane. Okay, that's your own sister, hun. And once he starts, the rest gets set off, and all they do is just bark. Then you meet another dog, and it literally is war. Okay. W, wo, wo, wo. Okay, okay. He may believe he's Lord and Master of the park, but Prince's reign of terror continues when he's in residence. Prince is, he's a very loving, loving dog, and I, um, say that from the bottom of my heart, because he is a beautiful dog, but when he is around other dogs, Prince can be quite, uh, dominating and aggressive. Oh, he bit me. Oh my God, no, Prince, no. He thinks he rules this world; you know, he runs it, he owns it; it's all his, and there's nothing you can do about it. It is Prince by name, Prince by nature. I, I can't believe I picked the name Prince for this dog. I think the show is harder than it was. Okay, okay. Prince, and this regal rascal makes working from home a near impossibility. Sorry, G. Yeah, rehearsals are going well. Good. It must be lovely being back with everybody again. It's so nice. Okay. Okay. Prince, Prince continually making it clear whose throne he thinks it is. Are the dogs okay, Alex? Yeah, are they attacking each other? Um, okay, stop, stop. Prince, Teddy, Teddy, you okay? Yep, all fine. Sorry, babe, I'll call you later. Okay, love you. Thank you. And work meetings in person are even more stressful. Okay, right. But enough. I'm desperate for him to change, cuz I never want to rehome my dogs, you know. That's my, that's the most heartbreaking thing for me is even thinking about that, and I have thought about that with Prince several times, actually. I'm at that point where I'm just like, if Graham doesn't help the situation, I've just don't know what to do. He is my only option. So it's not as though he's not getting attention. Yeah, exactly. He gets plenty of attention, plenty, plenty at the moment. I think it's actually too much, because people when they come into the house they're like, oh, we have to go and cater to Prince because of what he can be like, so they, he now gets more attention. Yeah, it's annoying. It's even got to the point where I thought of rehoming him, if I'm honest with you. Don't you start, and then that thought of rehoming him upsets me even more, cuz I'm like, I didn't get you to rehome you. Prince, stop. It's actually quite distressing. Like, yeah. To get the full picture, Graham's keen to see what Prince is like when mixing with members outside of the Royal House. Old Prince, stop. Prince, Prince, Prince, Prince, Prince. Right, come on, we going to go this way. Prince, stop, stop. Yeah, I mean, Prince really reacts, doesn't he, to other, the do, he? Prince just doesn't like other dogs. There we go, there he goes. There's a dog, do, in, in very distance running around playing. It needs to be all about Prince. Yeah. What do you think they're saying when they've walked off? Oh gosh, if he's gone for the dog, which she's done a few times in the past, they've probably walked off going, oh gosh, her dog isn't very nice. Cuz it's actually been said to my face, so I know that's probably said behind my back as well. That's why when people… Oh, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Prince, he's off. There's another dog having fun in the background. Yeah. So, but you know, like, this is the thing, it's hard because I like talking to people, so I have to cut the conversation really short because I'm like, just this happens the whole time, and it's not nice for them. But as long as he doesn't attack any other dog, we're okay. But, um, my biggest fear is knowing that actually he could get hurt one day because he may pick on the wrong dog. Yeah. Well, Prince, um, Prince by name and King of the castle I think by nature, um, he really doesn't like anybody else getting attention. You're going to kick yourself. M, you're not praising him when he's quiet. Oh God, damn ever. Yeah, okay. Oh, wow. And I think what you're doing is you're mixing a couple of signals. Right, if he's kicking off, he's getting a cuddle for it. He's like, what part of kicking off would not be a good thing? And if I'm quiet, either she puts me down and I've lost me special place, or nothing. She never praises me for being quiet, so why the heck would I? And the penny drops. Oh gosh, oh no. So I'm not going to lie, I feel really bad for Prince because I'm obviously doing things wrong and giving him attention at the wrong time. So I have to get in the habit now of making sure that when he is good, it's showering of love. All right.
In an attempt to dethrone the would-be king, Prince, Graham will be using one of Prince's arch enemies, his younger brother, Teddy, to show him that in this furry family of five, every dog matters. In a nutshell, Prince just needs to learn to share nicely, does he? Um, you know, Alexander's got the perfect right to, to dose out an equal amount of fuss to all the dogs, not just him. So the training is really simple. I want to get Alexander in a position where she can fuss a different dog and then go to first him, Prince, and then go back to the other dog. If he's a good boy and he's quiet, he's going to get what he wants: attention. Previously, Prince was getting a cuddle when he was barking and being nasty. Yes. So we need to turn that around. Yes, we do. So let's Ted down over there. Lovely, Ang. There you go. So Teddy goes there. Look, hopefully he'll stay up. All right, all right. This time when Prince demands his VIP cuddles back, no, he's put in his place. No, no, that's it. You've got it. Sit. Good boy. Good boy. No. And he quickly realizes that to get attention, good boy, he has to stay quiet, no, or ask really nicely. He's attention-seeking, bless him, but in a very cute way. So I wouldn't be again saying good boy for that. That's fine. Good boy. Good boy. Good. It's good progress, but what will happen when his little brother and threat to the throne is shown favor? So we'll give Teddy a little tickle for two, three seconds. Good boy. That's nice. And then back to Prince. Ah, no, no. Good boy. Good boy. Teddy. Now look, if you glance across at Prince now, he's sat waiting patiently. Good boy, Prin, a good boy. Good boy. Yes, that's good. Good boy, Tedd. Yay. For 9 years, Prince has been in power, but after just a few minutes, he's learned that every pup deserves cuddles and tickles, not just he who growls and yaps. Good boy, Prince. Good boy. Good boy. That's good. This is lovely, because this is very relaxed. It's like, yeah, this isn't normal. They are both in Zen world right now. It's just, um, a whole, a massive breakthrough moment this just now. Well done, Prince. Good boy. But for the final flourish, Graham wants to see if Prince's monarchy can be abolished completely. Bell. I know he's so cute. Say that's good. Good girl. Good girl. Good boy. Magic. Good boy, Teds. Good boy, Teddy. What's he going to do? Well, that's okay. Good boy. And it seems Prince's Purple Rain, good boy, Alfie, is finally over. Good boy. Good boy. Now, I'm going to see… This is for me a miracle, the fact that I can sit on the sofa with the dogs. My goodness, it's never been this Zen, this calm. I mean, look at this. Is that fa… I mean, it's blown my mind a little bit. I'm not going to lie to you. I'm so proud. I'm so proud of you, Prince. Well, fabulous. Uh, all five dogs in the same room, and Alexandra there fussing them all at will whenever she wants, and not a peep from Prince. In fact, he looks really, really calm. Al, he used Alexander's word, Zen. There's a lot of Zen in that room right now. So much so that Alexandra can't wait to tell her agent that she's back in business. So, Gab, I've got some great news. Good. Tell me. So can you see we're having this conversation right now, and there is no barking. No interruption. There's no interruptions. There's no fighting. So more business video calls will commence from tomorrow, darling, with no interruptions. That's what we're praying for. Yes. Fabulous. Good boy. Yay. Pleased with that. I'm so pleased. So if Graham can change things for Prince when he's outside, God bless him, because I don't know if I've got much faith in that one. Whilst Graham comes up with a plan to end Prince's war-mongering ways in the park, he's heading 160 miles up the spine of the country to Manchester. Good boy. No. B, in where one woman lives with her gentle giant, Wilson. No, no, no. He's soft, he's friendly, he's funny, and I am completely in love with this dog. I'm obsessed with him. I just, I can't get enough of him. I adore him. Come on. How we get… Good boy. Until I have to take him out for a walk. No, Wilson. No, no. Since Wilson joined Joanne and her family 9 months ago, no, every trip outside their front door has been a nightmare. Stop it. Anywhere with a road, it is so stressful. Wilson, stop. And I'm frightened, like genuinely, I'm scared. No, no. And with Joanne living on a busy road, any outing is a brush with serious danger as Wilson launches himself at any vehicle, no matter how big. My Wilson thinks he can catch trucks and buses. He even went for the Royal Mail van wing mirror when the van went past him; he had it like he was hanging off it. No. Although he's still a puppy, Wilson, an Old English sheepdog, already weighs 25 kilos, and he's growing bigger by the day. When he was younger, I couldn't control it, but now he's older and bigger, I've got no chance now, and he's still going to double his body weight. No, no. For Joanne, it's only a matter of time before the unthinkable happens. He's going to get run over; he's going to get run over, and I, I can't stop it. Makes me sad. I, what, him getting run over. I just want to give him safe cuz I love him. Can Graham help avert a tragedy? Oh, sorry. Oh, hello. Sorry, don't blind… You're holding on to him. Is that what you got to do with him? Yeah, this is it. When the door goes… Tell you what you like. Come in. It's going to be easier. Is it coming? He's quite a handful, by all accounts. He is a handsome handful. Handsome handful. So why an Old English sheepdog then? You don't see many these days. Because we got burgled last summer. Oh, really? Yeah. So I wanted to, to alert us really, and to frighten, which he, he generally does quite well. Right. But it's unusual choice for a guard dog, an Old English sheepdog. I mean, they're just known for being big softies, in more ways than one, softies and clowns. But, but very protective of the family, which was rich was my number one, but he is a bit of a nightmare to walk anywhere near anything to do with traffic. Can I show you how he behaves? Yeah, absolutely. I'd love to see it. Okay, okay. Come on. Just steps from the front door, a busy road awaits. No, no. This is, this is how it generally… Yeah, yeah. It's a bit of a battle, in it? Ni… Yeah. Wa… Good boy. Come on. Ah, okay. Come on. Come on, Wilson. No, no. I must… Coming. Oh, no, no, no. Just walk down the main street is well… It's chaos; there's no other word for it. And danger of chaos at that. That's to wonder she's not being pulled under a bus, frankly. Oh dear. Um, it's not the easiest meters of my life. No, you're right. I know he's upset. I can't have him around cars for longer than that amount of time. So you, you think he's scared? I feel like he's frightened. Why do you think that is? Um, I think he doesn't see well through one of his eyes. Okay. He's got two different color eyes; one's blue, one's brown. We, you think he's got a slight visual impairment in one of his eyes? And to what level? We, we're unsure, but we do know that he struggles with one eye. Yeah. Oh, that explains a lot. Bless him. He's a big, powerful, fast dog who's highly, highly reactive, and he's, we think, got this visually impairment. Um, none of that makes this easy. I think what's happening is out on the street, he's kind of gone, oh, that's my job then, I've got to protect myself and everybody else from these scary things that come past. Oh, wow. You think he's trying to protect himself and me from the cars? Yeah. And on top of that, you're going, oh my God, this is scary, right, which reinforces it, and he's like, I've never even turned it around to that. Yeah, she's scared, I'm scared. Everybody's scared. BST, you know, it's like… Yeah, yeah, totally. The other thing that makes this even more complex is the way that it is at the moment is self-rewarding; momentarily feels good cuz he got rid of the dangerous thing. Oh gosh. I backed, I lunged, it went away; I scared it off; I got rid… Yeah. If he sat quietly and watched, he might come to the conclusion, they go, well, they're coming and going anyway, aren't they? Because nothing to do with me. And I've not given him that time around traffic to understand that, because I, I avoid it. I think that's it. Right, come on then, let's go.
So to teach this guard dog without a cause that he doesn't need to ward off buses and cars, Graham needs to train him at the perfect location. It's really important that we don't actually start on the main road where the big, big problem is, because well, Wilson just can't think straight. So I'm going to go to a park where we can see traffic, and then if he doesn't react, we get something to reward; we can stay nice and calm, and then gradually we can approach the traffic bit by bit and teach him that actually traffic is okay. To show Wilson that he doesn't need to protect anyone from treacherous traffic, he'll be introduced to it at a distance and clearly shown that Joanne is in no danger. If he does react, we'll catch him on the lead; if necessary, we'll get around the front of him, like, no. Right, you like… Hey, I've got this. Mhm. And that really is the message: you don't need to protect yourself and your mom; your mom's got this. Yeah. But we'll start with me demoing it, and then it's over to you. Okay. Right, let's move a little bit further forward and see what we get. Good boy. That's fine. No. Even at a fair distance from the traffic… Ah, no. Wilson's instinct to protect still kicks in. Hey, hey, hey. Uh, no. So let's just pause for a bit. Wait. Come here. The moment it all gets too much for him… Oops. Let's see what happens. A great big ambulance. Oh, oh. Graham makes sure he knows everything's in hand. Good boy. Right, let's go a little bit nearer. Ah, no, no. Now he's getting a little bit pully. Yeah, maybe this is as close as we need to be for the moment. We can see his tents now, can't you? Hey, hey. No. Let's stay calm. Good morning. We're getting used to this, and it'll start to chill out again. No, one move on again. Oh, sat down. Look at that. Yeah. This time closer to the road, Wilson appears to take a backseat. Clever boy. Standing down from his duties. Good Lord, he's lying there. Well, I didn't see that coming. Good boy. Well, good boy. Joanne's seen just how Wilson can get to traffic without becoming overprotective, but how will he react when she's at the end of the lead? The really important thing about this is body language. Previously, Jo looked absolutely beside herself, anxious, stressed, panicked, all of those things. If she looks like that now, we're sunk. Come on, babe. Come on. Good boy. That's it. Nice. Can… Good boy. As soon as Wilson is reassured that Mom's got this, good boy, good boy, good boy. Joanne can easily get him near the road. Come on. Good boy. There we go. Good boy. That's good. Is it? Now, just a few feet away. Slowly. Slow there. She's got something to praise him for. Good, good boy. Keep going. Slowly. Slow. Oh, she's going to have a sniff of the tree. And no matter how close to the road he gets… We are pretty much on top of the road now. Yeah, we are. He's no longer on high [Music] alert. Oh, well done. How about that? And even the most imposing vehicles… Look at that. R… Okay, by Wilson. And there, a b, l, with flashing lights going fast. Good boy. And be less bothered. He… Well, no. For 9 months, Wilson has been on patrol guarding Mom from the roads, but now, having learned there's no need for close protection, he couldn't clock off completely. I can't believe it. I can't, I can't actually believe it. He's not, he's not pulling me; he's not, he's not barking. Yeah. This is beyond my wildest dreams as well. Today, I've got to say, it's massive improvement. It's more than I could have hoped for. Great. Thank you. No, you're welcome. Good boy. Dogs never cease to amaze you. Um, this has been a fantastic result. I couldn't be more happy. I mean, the bottom line is, she lives in a busy place, um, she's going to encounter traffic every time she comes out the front door, and she can walk her dog now in safety, um, you know, neither he nor her are going to get hurt as she's walking along the main road. That's got to be good news, isn't it? Good boy. Graham may have taught Wilson to give up the day job, but now he's heading back down, down the country, this time to Kent, to try and save one professional dog walker from her own dog.
It's so stressful walking Coco. It's never a peaceful walk. I think sometimes people think, you know, oh, dog walking, that's a, that's a fun, easy job to do, you know, but it's not. You got to look after all manner of dogs, and a really good, trustworthy dog walker's worth the waiting. Go… Oh my God, Coco, Coco, stop. Rescue dog Coco. Coco stop. Ding found her forever home with Fran and Mom a year ago. I was looking for months and months to find like a good dog on like rescue sites, and I was just in love with her as soon as I saw her eyes. And you loved her, didn't you? She's such a lovable dog. Yeah. But as soon as we leave the house, she cries and howls the whole… War. All everyone can hear is Coco barking, and once she starts, she just doesn't stop. I get so many looks and dirty looks all the time, cuz I mean, you come here for creation and that you don't hear that, and neither do any prospective clients. I've got these business cards, and I'd love to give them out, but I honestly think if I just went up to someone, they would just laugh in my face. Despite Coco's deafening dog walks, Fran has managed to win some loyal clients. These are the dogs I've looked after. Having given up her steady job as a carer, this fledgling business needs to be a success. If I had to close my business, it would like destroy me. It would be so hard to do that, because all my life I've wanted to do this. Not very proud of her. She do the guts to do it. Thanks. So it would break my heart for it to end. Are you going to cry? Can Graham save Fran and her dream business? Oh, yeah. Hello. I'm guessing you're Fran? I'm Fran, and this is Coco. Hello, Coco. Go… Blim me. You don't have… B, you… She does. You're like that crazy dog lady, are you? Yeah, literally I am. Oh, here. Should we go to walk together? Yeah, let's. So when does the barking start then? Um, as soon as we leave the house, and it stops when we get back to the house. So the whole duration of the [Music] walk… I, I do feel really sorry for the other dogs I walk, especially when they're a lot smaller. It must be so scary and intimidating listening to that for the whole walk. It is definite. It's not nice. Def [Music] Yeah. Hard truth for Fran is that anybody would see her in the park and think that lady's not in control of that dog. For a professional dog walker, Coco is really bad for business. But for the full picture, Graham wants to see what Coco's like at home, and it's an eye opener. Look at that. She's really good in here, is she? Yeah, she's great when she's on her road or inside. She's just a different dog. I mean, she's only just met me. Yeah, she loves… She's like, I'll snuggle up with you, that bur… in under me jacket. She's so good. I… She's a sweetheart. You really get a feel for that. I wish people did see this side of her, cuz this is such a loving side of Coco. How old is she now? She's two soon. And you've had her for how long? Just over a year now. Right. What was her story before you got her? Do you know anything? We don't know too much, but we know that she was locked in a cage and like in a flat for a very long time, and she didn't have loads of walks, so she didn't have like the great quality of life that a big dog needs. Right. So she didn't see very much of the outside world. No. I think there's a clue in Coco's background as to what's going on. She is so excited when she sees the outside world because of what she was used to, that now she literally can't contain that. But the problem is that Fran's not giving her any training. There's no, don't do that, but, but do do this. That's the problem. Time for teacher training. No, Graham's going to show Fran how to teach Coco a basic lesson. If she barks, she's not going to get to go out there. Um, we're going to actually turn around and walk her back towards the house, but if she's a good girl, keeps it quiet, we'll praise her. Good girl. We'll continue on with our walk. To make it clear for Coco, Fran will be shown…
How to use a clear command. Coco, stop. Good. Go look at that. Yeah, that's pretty impressive. Yeah, I think I'm in trouble. Coco is already looking like a good student whose reward is a fun walk outside. But the moment she hears "stop," the party's over. Let's take another step or two forward. Good girl. Yay. So she's still excited, the tail waggy, but she's just about, just about keeping it a little. Yeah, good girl. Come on, sure we go for a walk. Clever Coco has realized being quiet might just win her her favorite thing. Good girl. Ah, Coco, stop. But as soon as she gets over excited, that's it. No, come on, it's home time. Coco, stop. Here, we're going in. Right, come, come on, Coco. He's clever, in it. Just a minute later, it's time to start lessons again. Good girl. There we go, clever girl. Now she's turned her energies a different way, instead of barking at the, the sky. Yeah, her head's, she's like, oh, actually, I've discovered there's a lot of interest in smells as well. This bit is usually the worst bit of the walk, Le, in the house. And this is, I've never seen this, it's incredible. Do you want to go? Yes, definitely. Good. Bran's had the training, now it's time to take over the lesson, Coco. Right, Coco, stop. Well done. The instructions are simple, right? Let's turn around again. Then when Coco can't keep her head down, Coco, stop. Right, come on, playtime's over. All right, try again. Coco, stop. Good girl. That time it worked without going back. Yeah, yeah, good girl, Coco. It's the furthest away from the house she's been so far. Good girl, Coco. Great, I'm really pleased with that. Me too, I'm very pleased. A massive difference. She's like a different dog, honestly.
And for Coco's final exam, can she still remain star pupil when her classmates join her? This is good. Good [Music] girl. Coco, stop. Good girl, Coco. Her earsplitting excitement is now much more low-key. Good girl. Hey, silence is golden. Absolutely. After nearly a year of non-stop noise on walks, now Coco might just be the perfect ad for a doggy business. Honestly, I'm speechless. What you've done in such a short amount of time is absolutely incredible. And with the tools to keep up the training, Coco, stop. Fran might just be able to keep doing the job she loves, to look like a professional. There, it doesn't feel like I'm walking Coco at all. It's so nice. You keep up the practice, keep training this, even that whing is going to go, it's going to be a game changer. So is it? Yeah, yeah. You could get your business cards out now and start handing them to people. You can be proud about that. Yes, I will be. Make no mistake, Coco was a tricky dog to train because she's so excitable, and I think Fran's done so well today. She's learned to train a dog that is kicking off a bit, and I think that bodes very well for the future. If she can handle Coco, she can handle most people's dogs. Good girl. Good girl, Coco.
Back in Hertfordshire, Graham Hall has unfinished business all right with Prince, the dog who would be king. Prince, stop, stop. And his celebrity owner, Alexandra Burke. No last time, Graham knocked Prince off his throne. If you glance across now, he sat waiting patiently. Well done, Prince. Good boy. Yes. Now Alexandra needs to walk him without fear of him declaring war in the park. Okay, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Okay, okay. Prince is just embarrassing to her, you know. And when Prince kicks off, he sets all the other dogs off. So before you know it, Alexandra's not got one dog out of control, she's got a whole pack of five. Graham's hoping to build on his success at home and teach Prince that his Queen Alexandra is allowed to bestow cuddles on any dog she chooses. No. And to help out, a local dog, Lord Leo, has bravely sworn to face the mighty Prince. Hi, Graeme. Hi, how are you? I'm good, darling. How are you? I'm very well. Good. Well, today, um, kind of obvious that anytime there's another dog that's getting your attention, yeah, even if you look at them over there somewhere, he's like, no, no, no, you can't talk to anybody else. Yes. So what I want to do is get him slowly but surely nearer to another dog, okay, without kicking off. Fabulous. Okay, cool. I'm up for the challenge. Let's hope Prince is, now in practice, he is going to bark and and lunge a bit, but when he does that, Alexandra needs to take control of the situation and block. So she's going to swing her leg in front of him and tell him, no. Now, when he calms down, if he's quiet, he gets praise. Now what Prince is going to understand from this is that actually, do you know what, your mom can talk to other dogs if she wants, it's fine, and you'll still get love at the end of it if you're a good boy. Right then. So I get in front of Prince as and when he barks. Right, timing. Praise him. Yeah. Okay. The reason I'm laughing is you, that, okay, this like very glamorous, yeah, that's not how we like to be glamorous, and I get that. Okay. Are you ready? So drop your arm, that's it. Good.
