You see, insulin resistance doesn't start in your pancreas. It starts in your cells, especially your muscle cells. So, check this out. This is a cell. You have about 50 to 70 trillion cells inside of your body. Every cell has this lipid billayer around it called the cell membrane. Insulin resistant genes that run in the family. diabetes genes, cancer genes, heart disease. That's controlled by your cell membrane. You also have these little organels. I'm going to draw a couple of them, but you have a few hundred to a few thousand depending on the cells that produce ATP, energy that helps you burn fat, that helps you feel good.
Now, this is the key part here. Every cell has these receptor sites called integral membrane proteins. All right? You don't have to know that part. Just understand they are receptor sites for hormones to attach to all hormones, all nutrients, even oxygen. But the hormone we're talking about here is insulin. Insulin needs to communicate to these receptor sites. The message is heard and then you function properly. You have amazing energy. You burn fat.
But if you're lacking that key mineral magnesium and you are eating processed foods, you're sedentary, you're going to create rigidity, cellular inflammation in these cells. When you have cellular inflammation, all of a sudden, insulin cannot communicate that message. So, here's the simplest way to picture this. I want you to think of your muscle cells like a warehouse. The glucose is the cargo sitting outside. Your muscles have little loading dock doors. These are proteins called glute 4 transporters. They need to swing open so that glucose can get in. Insulin is the phone call that tells those dock doors to open. When insulin hits the surface of the muscle cell, the receptor has to turn itself on first. That step is called autophosphorilation. And it literally does not happen without magnesium. There is research on magnesium deficient animals showing a roughly 50% reduction in muscle insulin receptor autophosphorilation. Translation: Insulin is calling. The phone is ringing off the hook, but nobody inside can pick it up. Oh, and it gets worse. So, why is this showing up now and not when you were 25? Well, three things compound after 40. And most people don't connect the dots. So, let me do this for you. Number one, your mitochondria are disappearing. By the time you hit 70, research suggests you've lost around 56 to 70% of your mitochondria. And that decline starts well before age 70.
