All right, guys. If you take a look at the board, I realize a lot of this kind of looks jumbly. You guys hopefully can read this. This is a lot of information to fit on the board. So, uh, today we're not going to just talk about acting. We're going to get a deeper understanding for it.
Okay. So, an actor doesn't just memorize lines and say them. An actor has to know what the character wants, why the character wants, and how the change and how that changes the way the character talks, moves, and behaves. So, today, what we're going to do is practice. Okay?
So, let's look up at the board. Let's read the learning goal together. Okay? I know this might sound a little bit like a children's TV show, but we're going to do it together. So >> I can motivation and explain how it affects acting choices. >> Awesome. Great. Great. Okay. So this is what we're going to practice. So looking up at the board, seeing the learning goal. Okay. So ready one more time. You guys got to read it with me one more time. Okay. >> I know it's a little blues quiz here. and analyze a character objective and motivation and explain how it affects acting choices. >> Awesome. Okay, good.
Now, let's break that down. So, we're going to look at the vocabulary. So, objective, objective means what the character wants. Okay? Motivation means why the character wants it. So, objective what the character wants. Motivation, why the character wants it. Okay, so let's say it together. Objective, >> what the character wants. Motivation, why the character wants it. >> Very good. Very good.
Now, I'm going to make it even simpler. If I want something, that is my objective. If there is a reason that I want it, that is my motivation. So if I say something like I want the last slice of pizza, that's my objective. Okay. But my motivation, my why could be because I haven't eaten all day long. Does that make sense? >> Okay. >> Thank you. Thank you.
Okay. So once I know those two things, you can make your acting choices a lot stronger. So let me ask you this. If somebody really really really wants something, does that change how they act? >> Good. If somebody really, really, really, really wants something, does that change how they act? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, let's see. If you change the way you talk, it changes the way you move and it changes the way you react. Okay.
So, let me think of how to say this to you guys. If you want to get out of school, Elite, all right, >> I want to get out of school. I don't want to come to school today. >> That would be your objective. >> But what could be your why? >> Because I have a test. >> Because you have a test, right? Okay. So, how would that maybe change how you acted in the morning when you woke up? go pretending to be sick. Maybe >> pretending to be sick, right? And so that would also change how you move because you won't you won't go up to your parents and be like, "Yeah, I don't want to go to school today. I feel groggy." You're going to change the way you move a little bit. Right? >> Okay. Good.
So now, let's look at the board. All right. So, a group of friends discover there is one slice of pizza left. All right. A group of friends discover there's one slice of pizza left. So, that's a very simple situation. But as actors, you can do a lot with a simple situation. So let's think about it together. So in that scene, what is the objective? What do you think? >> To get the last slice of pizza. >> Mhm. Yep. That's right. So the objective is to get the last slice of pizza. So I'm going to say that again just so it's crystal clear. >> The objective, one slice of pizza. You want it, right, Isabella? >> Okay, good. So, the last slice of pizza is the objective. All right.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. Just because two characters want the same thing does not mean that they want it for the same reason. So, the reason matters. All right. The reason is the motivation. So, why might somebody want the last slice of pizza? >> Mir hungry. Okay. >> Okay. Maybe a little bit even more detailed than that. >> Haven't eaten in three days. Okay, that's great. Okay, Desiree, >> they're greedy and just want more. >> They're greedy and they just want more. No, that's a legit reason. I mean, Zena, >> it's their favorite food and they don't get it often. >> It's their favorite food. All right, >> never had it in their life. They've never had pizza in their life. Hey, that's always >> I mean, hey, there's always there's always one, right? >> Cool. Yeah, you know, I bought it. It's my slice, Angelo. >> Okay. They have to eat it. All right. So, other things, you know, maybe they're starving. Maybe they paid for the pizza. Maybe they had a terrible day. You ever just want to eat pizza because you had a bad day? your day is not so good. >> Maybe they're saving it for themselves. Okay. So, do you hear how all those have different motivations, but the objective stays the same, right? It's to get the pizza, right? Okay.
Now, you guys can pause for a second. You can talk amongst yourself if you want. So, that is the first part. Okay. Great. So, if my motivation is to get the last slice of pizza, so if my objective is to get the last slice of pizza, my motivation because I haven't eaten all day. So, if I model that for you, if I walk in and I just say, "Hey, I really need the last slice of pizza. Can I have that?" What's more clear? If I do it that way or if I come in and I'm can I get the last slice of pizza? >> Which one's more clear? >> The second one. >> The second one. Why is it more clear? It shows emotion >> because it shows emotion. But you can also see that I'm >> trying to get pity. >> You're sad. >> Sad. Or >> what happens if you haven't eaten all day? >> Fatigued. You're weak. Yes. So the second one. Okay. >> So that's exactly what I mean.
Okay. Now here's what I want you guys to do. All right. I want you to turn to your partner and you are going to decide what your character wants. Guys, I want you to turn to your partner and you guys are going to decide what your character wants. You're going to decide why your character wants it. So, what the objective, what your character wants and then you're going to decide why your character wants it. Okay? So if you get stuck, I want you guys to look at this sentence frame on the board. The character's objective is blank because blank. So I will blank. So using this in terms of the last slice of pizza. The character's objective is >> to get pizza. >> To get the last lights of pizza because >> they're hungry. >> They're hungry. So I will >> buy a pizza. >> You will what? >> You will beg. Yes. Great. So, if you get stuck, just look at this sentence frame. Okay, this is a complete sentence. You guys can copy this and fill this in. Okay. So, all right, guys. I'm noticing a little bit of pattern. So, a lot of you guys when I was circling around the room, you're saying what the character wants, but you're also not saying the why. So, some of you guys when I heard you guys rehearsing. So, going back to the original thing is the character's objective is to get pizza because they haven't eaten all day. So, I will act desperate. Okay. Please don't go in the closet. Okay. >> Did somebody just walk in there? >> No. >> Okay. >> All right. I'm going to cut that part out where I said that, but you know. Okay. Because people are going to think that my classroom's unruly, which it is. and they we can't have that on film. >> Okay. Okay. So, now the acting choices are clear. So, here's what I want you guys to do to go back to your partner and fix your answer. If you only said what, I need you to add why. Let's go back to our vocabulary. Objective >> class objective >> motivation. >> Okay. So, a lot of you are including your objective, what the character wants, but we got to have that motivation. why they want it. Okay? So, if you only said what, now you add why. If you already said why, now you will act. You will change how you act. Okay? All right. All right. Now, what we're going to do, guys, is go ahead and get into groups of three to four. Everyone wants the pizza, but your reasons must be different. So, we're going to go back to this original scene prompt. A group of friends discover there's one slice of pizza left. So, everybody wants that one slice in your group, but everybody's reasons is different. Maybe one person is starving. Maybe one person is greedy. Maybe one person Yes, Chloe. >> Group of five. Group of four max. But somebody can >> table. Yeah, we're just going to go by table. Okay, so guys, we'll go by this table, this table, this table, this table. Okay, so I did notice something though, guys. And here's what I noticed. So, some ideas are strong, but the audience cannot always see them clearly. So, here's what I want to do. You know what? Do not hate me. I'd like you guys to go up one more time and try to show it even more clearly. Same group. Same group. try to show it even more clearly and think about from an audience perspective them seeing it. Show us think about the sentence frame. The character's objective is because, so I will. How are you showing them these things? They're just they're going to try to make their they're going to try to show even more depth what it is their character's objective and motivation and what they are doing to show that. So remember you dropped to your knees and you begged that was showing. Um Elite grabbed her ribs that was showing. Sienna got close to the box that was showing. Think of how you can show us even more to where it's so obvious. All right. And go. >> Look, there's only one slice of pizza left. Who wants it? >> There's please. I need it. Please. Please. Give me the pizza. Give me the pizza. Mary, I need the pizza. Please. >> Oh my god. It's my favorite type of flavor of pizza. Jeez. Can I please have it?
