Why do some people stay in toxic relationships? The well-known answer is because they lack self-esteem. And if they thought better of themselves, then they would take a stand and they would move on from these toxic relationships. And there's truth to that.
But I want to talk about another factor that keeps good people in toxic relationships. And that is that some of us have a knack for seeing the goodness in everybody, even in people whose behaviors are dysfunctional, even in people whose behaviors have been directed toward in a hurtful way. We see that spark of goodness in them, and we won't give up on it.
But here's the thing: at some point in your healing journey, you realize that just because you see the potential in someone doesn't mean that you have to stay in their life. It can mean that you can continue to see their good, but from a distance, from afar, and wish them well and wish them nothing but God's love, but from your own place.
