My order is wrong.
Excuse me.
Yes, sir. Is everything okay?
Well, I ordered a cheeseburger, but this is a chicken burger.
Oh, no. I am so sorry about that. Let me check your order.
No problem. These things happen.
You are very kind. Yes, I see here you ordered a cheeseburger with fries.
That's right. With no onions, please.
No onions. I wrote that down. I will fix this right away.
Thank you. How long will it take?
Just 5 minutes. The kitchen is very fast.
Okay, that sounds good.
Can I bring you anything while you wait? A drink?
Actually, yes. Can I have a cola, please?
Of course, with ice.
Yes, please. Lots of ice.
Perfect. And I want to apologize again for the mistake. How about a free slice of apple pie for dessert?
Really? That's very kind of you.
It's the least I can do. I will be right back with your drink and the correct burger.
Thank you so much.
Again, I am very sorry for the mistake.
It's okay. Everyone makes mistakes.
You are a very understanding customer. Thank you.
Five minutes later.
Here you are, sir. One cheeseburger with fries, no onions.
This looks perfect. Thank you. Is there anything else I can get for you?
No, this is great. Thank you for fixing it so quickly.
My pleasure. Enjoy your meal.
Coffee shop confusion.
Hi. What can I get for you today?
Hello. I want um one coffee, please.
Sure. What size would you like? Small, medium, or large?
Medium, please.
Great. And would you like room for cream? room. I don't understand.
Oh, sorry. Room for cream means space in the cup. So, you can add milk or cream.
Ah, I understand now. Yes, please. Room for cream.
Perfect. And what kind of milk we have? Regular, almond, oat, or soy milk.
So many choices. What is oat milk?
Oat milk is made from oats. It's a plant-based milk. Many people like it.
Interesting. I will try the oat milk, please.
Good choice. So, that's one medium coffee with room for oat milk. Anything else?
Yes. What is that in the glass case?
Those are muffins. We have blueberry, chocolate chip, and banana nut.
Banana nut. What is that?
It's a muffin with bananas and walnuts. It's sweet and delicious.
That sounds good. I'll take one, please.
Wonderful. So, one medium coffee with oat milk and one banana nut muffin. Your total is $8.50.
Here you are.
Thank you. Your order will be ready in just a minute. Can I have a name for the order?
My name is Carlos.
Perfect, Carlos. I'll call your name when it's ready.
Thank you for explaining everything. My English is not so good.
Your English is great and you're very welcome. That's what I'm here for.
Thank you. You are very kind. Thank you.
No problem at all. Welcome to the neighborhood.
First time at sushi.
Good evening. Welcome. Is this your first time here?
Yes, it is. Everything looks amazing, but I don't know what to order.
No problem. I can help you. What do you usually like? Fish, vegetables.
I like both, but I've never had sushi before.
Okay, let me explain. We have two main types: Maki rolls and nigiri.
What's the difference?
Maki rolls are sushi rolled in seaweed with rice. They have fish and vegetables inside.
That sounds good.
Nigiri is a slice of raw fish on top of pressed rice. No seaweed roll.
Ah, I see. Which one do you recommend for a beginner?
The California roll is perfect for first time. It has crab, avocado, and cucumber. Not too strong.
That sounds safe. I'll try that.
Good choice. And maybe some salmon nigiri. Salmon is mild and very popular.
Okay, let's do both.
Excellent. Now, let me show you the condiments. This green paste is wasabi.
What's wasabi?
It's Japanese horseradish. Very spicy. You only need a tiny bit.
Okay, I'll be careful. And this pink thing is ginger. You eat a small piece between different sushi. It cleans your palette.
Oh, like a palette cleanser.
Exactly. You know that term?
I learned it from a cooking show.
Very good. And this is soy sauce. You can dip your sushi lightly.
Just a little bit.
Yes. Too much and you can't taste the fish. Just dip the fish side, not the rice.
That's a good tip. Thank you for explaining everything.
My pleasure. I'll bring your order out soon. Enjoy your first sushi experience.
I'm excited. Thanks for being such a great teacher.
British tea time.
Good afternoon, sir. Welcome. Table for one.
Yes, please. Near the window if possible.
Of course. Right this way. Here you are.
Lovely. Thank you.
Are you familiar with afternoon tea or is this your first time?
I've had it once before in London, but it's been years.
Wonderful. Let me explain our service today. Afternoon tea comes with finger sandwiches, scones, and small cakes on a three tier stand.
That sounds delightful.
And you can choose your tea. We have English breakfast, Earl Gray, dariling, and several herbal teas.
I'll have the Earl Gray, please.
Excellent choice. Now, for the scones, they come with clotted cream and strawberry jam.
Remind me what is clotted cream again?
It's a thick, rich cream from Devon. You spread it on the scone with the jam. It's absolutely divine.
And is there a proper way to do it?
There's actually a debate about which goes on first. Some say cream first, others say jam first.
What do you recommend?
I say whatever makes you happy. Life's too short to worry about such things.
I like your philosophy.
Now, the sandwiches. We have cucumber, smoked salmon, egg salad, and ham with mustard. All on white or brown bread with crusts removed.
Why remove the crusts?
Tradition, really. It makes them more delicate and easier to eat in one or two bites.
This is quite fancy, isn't it?
It's meant to be a treat. a proper English tradition. I'll bring your tea out straight away.
Thank you so much.
My pleasure. Enjoy your afternoon tea.
Italian restaurant date.
This place looks wonderful. Thank you for bringing me here.
You are welcome. I am happy you like it. This is my favorite Italian restaurant.
How long have you been in America?
3 months. I came from Rome for my studies. I am a graduate student.
That's exciting. What are you studying?
Art history. There are many important American museums I want to learn about.
That sounds fascinating. And you must know all about Italian food.
Yes, my mother is a very good cook. Let me help you with the menu.
That would be great. There are so many choices. First, do you like pasta or pizza?
I love pasta, but I don't know which one to choose.
Okay. Do you like tomato sauce or cream sauce?
H I think tomato sauce.
Then I recommend the spaghetti al pomodoro.
What does al pomodoro mean?
Al pomodoro means with tomato. It is simple but very delicious. Fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic, olive oil.
That sounds perfect. And what will you have?
I will have the lasagna. It reminds me of my mama's cooking.
That's sweet. Do you miss home?
Sometimes, yes. But I am happy here. I am learning English.
Your English is very good.
Thank you. But sometimes I make mistakes like I come from Rome. I should say I came from Rome.
Yes, actually both are okay. I come from Rome means that's your hometown. I came from Rome means you traveled from there recently.
Ah, this is helpful. English is tricky sometimes.
Italian is tricky for me too. I only know ciao and gratzi.
That's a good start. Ciao is hello and goodbye. Gratzi is thank you.
I'll practice. Gratzi for teaching me.
PGO, that means you're welcome. See, you are learning.
This is fun. I like learning languages.
Me, too. Maybe you teach me more English and I teach you more Italian.
That sounds like a great idea.
French restaurant experience.
This restaurant is beautiful. Have you been here before?
Yes, once. The food is excellent, but the menu can be a bit confusing.
Why is that?
Many of the dishes have French names. Let me help you translate.
That would be wonderful. Thank you.
What type of food do you usually like?
I like chicken and fish. Not too heavy.
Perfect. Then I recommend the coco van or the soul min.
What do those mean?
Coco van is chicken cooked in red wine with mushrooms and onions. Very traditional French dish.
That sounds delicious. And the other one.
Soul Munir is a flat fish cooked in butter with lemon. It's light and elegant.
H I think I'll try the fish. I've never had soul before.
Good choice. And for a starter, do you want something to begin with?
What's good?
The esargo is classic, but if you're not adventurous, the onion soup is excellent.
What's esargo?
It's snails cooked in garlic butter.
Snails? Really?
I know it sounds strange, but they're actually delicious. Very buttery and garlicky.
I think I'll stick with the onion soup.
That's perfectly fine. It's called soup alone. It has cheese melted on top.
That sounds much more my style. And for dessert, you must try the creme brulee.
I've heard of that. It's the one with the hard sugar on top, right?
Exactly. You break through the caramelized sugar to get to the creamy custard underneath.
That sounds amazing. This is going to be a wonderful meal.
I'm glad I could help. French food is worth the extra effort to understand.
Absolutely. Thank you for being such a good guide.
Chinese restaurant adventure.
I'm so glad you suggested this place. I love Chinese food.
This is my uncle's restaurant. The food is very authentic. Real Chinese cooking.
Great. Can you help me order? I never know what to choose.
Of course. What do you like? Spicy or not spicy?
I like a little bit spicy. Not too hot.
Okay. I recommend Kungpow chicken. It has peanuts and vegetables. A little spicy, but not too much.
That sounds good. What else?
We should order family style. Everyone shares the dishes. That's how we eat in China.
I like that idea. What does family style mean exactly?
It means we order several dishes and put them in the middle. Everyone takes a little bit of each dish.
Oh, I see. Like tapus in Spain?
Similar. Yes. But we use chopsticks and share from the same plates.
Should we get rice too?
Yes. Always rice. We can get steamed rice or fried rice.
What's the difference?
Steamed rice is plain white rice. Fried rice has egg, vegetables, and sometimes meat mixed in.
Let's get one of each.
Good idea. Now, we need one more dish. Do you like dumplings?
I love dumplings, but I never know how to eat them.
I show you. First, you pick up the dumpling with chopsticks. Then, you dip it in this sauce. It's soy sauce with vinegar.
Just dip the bottom.
Yes. And be careful. There's hot soup inside some dumplings.
Really? Soup inside?
Yes. We call them soup dumplings. You bite a small hole first, then you drink the soup, then you eat the dumpling.
That's so clever. I can't wait to try.
One more thing. In China, it's polite to serve others before yourself.
Oh, I didn't know that. Thank you for teaching me.
No problem. I like sharing my culture. Are you ready to eat?
Yes. This is going to be delicious.
Bar food and friends.
Hey, thanks for meeting me here. How was your day?
Long. I need a burger and a beer. This place looks good.
It's perfect. Simple, good food. Have you looked at the menu yet?
Yes. I think I want a bacon cheeseburger, but I have a question.
Sure. What is it?
What does how do you want it cooked mean?
Oh, they ask how much you want the meat cooked. You can choose rare, medium rare, medium, or well done.
I don't understand. What is the difference?
It's about how pink the meat is inside. Rare means very pink. Well done means no pink at all.
I understand. In Korea, we always cook meat completely. I want no pink.
Then you want well done. I usually get medium, a little pink in the middle.
Okay, well done. And what about sides? There are so many choices.
You get to choose one. Fries, onion rings, kleslaw, or a salad.
What is kleslaw? I never tried it.
It's chopped cabbage with mayonnaise. Some people love it, some people hate it.
H maybe I try the onion rings. What are those?
They're sliced onions in batter, deep fried, crispy and delicious.
That sounds good. And for drink, what do you recommend?
I'm getting an IPA. It's a type of beer, more hoppy and bitter.
What is hoppy?
Hops are the plant that give beer flavor. IPAs have lots of hops, so they taste more bitter.
I think I want something lighter, not bitter.
Then get a logger. It's crisp and refreshing. Perfect with a burger.
Logger. Okay. You know a lot about beer.
I come here a lot after work. It's a great place to relax.
I like it here. The people are friendly.
And the food is great. Should we order?
Yes, please. I am very hungry.
Fish and chips.
Hi. I've never been to a fish and chip shop before.
Really? Well, you're in for a treat. This is proper British food.
Great. Can you help me order?
Of course. First question. Do you like fish?
Yes, I do. What kind of fish do you have?
Usually cod or hadock. Both are white fish, very mild and flaky.
What's the difference between them?
Cod is a bit meatier. Hadock is more delicate, but honestly, they're quite similar.
I'll try the cod. Is it fried?
Yes, it's deep fried in batter. The batter is like a crispy coating.
That sounds delicious. And the chips?
Chips are thick cut fries. Much thicker than American fries.
Oh, I thought chips meant what we call potato chips.
In Britain, those are called crisps. It's confusing, I know.
So, fish and chips is fish and thick fries.
Exactly. And you can add salt and vinegar on top.
Vinegar on fries.
Trust me, it's traditional and it tastes amazing. The vinegar is malt vinegar.
Okay, I'll try it. When in Britain, do as the British do.
That's the spirit. Now, do you want mushy peas with that?
Mushy peas? What are those?
They're green peas that are cooked until they're soft and mushy. They're a classic side.
Sure, why not? I'm trying everything today.
And finally, do you want it wrapped in paper to take away or eat here?
Let's eat here. I want to experience it properly.
Perfect. One codon chips with mushy peas, salt and vinegar coming right up.
This is exciting. Thank you for being such a good guide.
My pleasure. Welcome to British Cuisine.
Fast food order.
Hey, first time here.
Hello.
Yes, it is. Everything looks good, but I don't understand some words.
I come here every week. Let me help you out.
Thank you. That is very kind. What is combo meal?
A combo meal is a burger or sandwich with fries and a drink. It's cheaper than buying them separately.
Ah, in France we say menu. Same thing.
Exactly. So, what do you feel like eating?
I want to try a burger. A classic American burger.
Then get the cheeseburger combo. It's simple and delicious.
What comes on the cheeseburger?
Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, and mustard.
What are pickles?
Pickles are cucumbers in vinegar. They're sour and crunchy.
Oh, I don't think I like sour things on my burger.
That's okay. You can say no pickles please when you order.
Good to know. And what size fries should I get?
The medium is usually enough. The large is huge.
Okay, medium. And for the drink,
you can choose from soda, lemonade, iced tea, or water.
What is iced tea? In France, we have te glass.
Oh, interesting. Yes, iced tea is similar. It's cold tea with ice. But American iced tea is usually less sweet than tea glass in France.
Less sweet. Tea glass is very sweet, often with peach flavor.
Exactly. American iced tea can be sweet or unsweetened. This place makes it lightly sweetened, so it's probably less sweet than what you're used to.
I see. I will try it anyway.
Great choice. So, let me help you order. You say, "I'd like a cheeseburger combo with medium fries and an iced tea. No pickles on the burger, please."
I'd like a cheeseburger combo with medium fries and an iced tea. No pickles, please.
Perfect. You're ready.
Thank you so much for your help. My English is not perfect.
Your English is great, and you're very welcome.
Thank you. You're very patient. Americans are friendly.
We try. Enjoy your meal.
Thank you so much for watching today. I hope these conversations helped you learn useful English for eating out at restaurants. These are real skills you can use. Which conversation was most useful for you? Was it the American diner where Tom's order was wrong? Or the coffee shop where Carlos learned about different kinds of milk? Maybe the sushi restaurant where James tried Japanese food for the first time, or the food truck where Pierre ordered his first American burger. Please leave a comment and tell me. If you enjoyed this video, please give it a like and subscribe to our channel. Share this with a friend, family member, or colleague who is learning English. And don't forget to watch another video to keep practicing. Thank you again, and I'll see you in the next lesson.
Hello everyone. Welcome back. Today I want to introduce you to someone special. Her name is Hannah and she works at Everyday Burger Bar. Hannah will show you real conversations at a fast food restaurant. You will learn how to take orders, help customers, and work with confidence. This is very useful English for everyday life. Let's meet Hannah and start learning.
Hello, my name is Hannah. Welcome to Everyday Burger Bar. This is my workplace. Today is your first day here, and I want to help you. I know you might feel nervous. That's okay. I felt nervous on my first day, too. I remember standing right here looking at the menu and thinking, "How will I remember all of this?" But you know what? It's easier than you think. Everyone makes mistakes when they are learning. That's completely normal. The important thing is to stay calm and be kind to customers. They understand that you are learning. In this video, I will show you everything step by step. We will learn about the menu, how to take orders at the counter, how to help customers at the kiosk, and even how to work at the drive-thru. Don't worry, we will go slowly. I will be with you the whole time. Are you ready? Let's start learning together. You can do this.
Learning the menu.
Okay, let's talk about the menu. I know it looks like a lot. When I started, I thought, "This is too much. I can't remember everything, but here's the secret. You don't need to learn it all at once. You learn one part at a time. Look at the menu. See, it has four main parts. First, we have burgers. We have the classic burger, the cheeseburger, and the deluxe burger. The deluxe burger has bacon, lettuce, tomato, and special sauce. Second, we have combo meals. A combo meal has a burger, fries, and a drink. It's very popular because customers save money. Third, we have sides. That means fries, onion rings, or a side salad. And finally, drinks. We have soda, juice, coffee, and milkshakes. That's it. Four parts: burgers, combos, sides, drinks. See, it's simple. Now, here's another tip. Customers usually ask for the same things. Most people order a combo meal. So, you will hear, "Can I get a combo?" many, many times. After one week, you will know the menu by heart. Trust me. Now, let's practice with a real customer.
Curious customer at the counter.
Hello. I have a question about your menu.
Of course, I am happy to help. What would you like to know?
What is the difference between the classic burger and the deluxe burger?
Good question. The classic burger has a beef patty, cheese, pickles, and ketchup. The deluxe burger has everything from the classic burger, plus bacon, lettuce, tomato, and our special sauce.
Oh, I see. And which one is more popular?
The deluxe burger is our most popular option. Many customers love the special sauce.
Okay. and the combo meals. What comes with a combo?
A combo meal comes with a burger, a medium fries, and a medium drink. You can choose any burger you like.
Can I change the medium fries to a large?
Yes, you can. For an extra $1.50, you can make it a large.
Perfect. And for the drink, what options do I have?
We have Coke, Sprite, Fanta, iced tea, or a lemonade. We also have coffee if you prefer.
Wonderful. I think I will take the deluxe burger combo with a large fries and a Coke, please.
Great choice. That's one deluxe burger combo with large fries and a Coke. Your total is $9.75. Here you go.
Thank you for your patience. You explained everything so clearly.
You're very welcome. Your order will be ready in just a few minutes.
Selfservice kiosk training.
Now, let's talk about the selfservice kiosks. Some customers like to order using these machines instead of talking to us at the counter. At first, the kiosk might look complicated, but actually it's very simple. Let me show you how it works. First, the customer taps start order on the screen. Then, the kiosk shows all the menu categories: burgers, combos, sides, drinks. Just like the counter menu, the customer taps what they want. For example, if they tap combos, the screen shows all our combo meals. They choose one and then the kiosk asks what size drink, small, medium or large. After they choose, the kiosk asks what drink would you like? They tap their choice. Finally, the kiosk shows the order and says, "Is this correct?" The customer can review everything before paying. If something is wrong, they can go back and change it. If everything is correct, they tap pay now and pay with a credit card. Easy, right? Sometimes customers need help with the kiosk. Maybe they don't understand English very well or maybe they're not comfortable with technology. That's okay. Your job is to help them. Let's practice that now.
Helping at the kiosk.
Excuse me. Can you help me, please?
Of course. What do you need? This machine is very confusing. I want to order two combo meals, but I don't understand.
No problem. Let me help you. What would you like to order?
I want two deluxe burger combos. One for me and one for my friend.
Okay, let's do this together. First, tap here. See combos?
Oh, yes. I tap this.
Exactly. Now, do you see the deluxe burger combo? Tap that.
Okay, I see it. I tap here.
Perfect. Now it asks what size drink. You can choose small, medium, or large.
I want medium.
Good. Tap medium. Now, what drink would you like?
Um, Coke for me, and my friend wants Sprite.
Okay, let's add your order first. Tap Coke. Good. Now tap add to order.
Add to order. Okay.
Now we need to add the second combo. Tap combos again.
Like before.
Exactly. You're doing great. Tap deluxe burger combo again.
Okay. Medium size.
Yes. And for the drink, tap Sprite for your friend.
Sprite. I got it.
Excellent. Now look at the screen. It shows two combo meals. Is that correct?
Yes, this is right. Thank you so much.
You're welcome. Now, tap pay now and use your card here.
You made this so easy. I was so confused before.
I'm happy to help. Enjoy your meal.
Drive-thru basics.
All right. Now, let's talk about the drive-thru. The drive-thru is a little different from the counter. Customers stay in their cars and they order through a speaker. You wear a headset and talk to them through a microphone. Here's what you need to know. First, the drive-thru is fast. Customers want quick service. Second, the sound quality is not always good. Sometimes the speaker makes noise or the customer's voice is hard to hear. That's normal. Don't worry. Third, some customers have accents or speak English as a second language. You need to listen carefully and be patient. If you don't understand something, it's okay to ask, "Can you repeat that, please?" or "I'm sorry, can you say that again?" Customers understand. Now, here's the basic drive-thru process. When a car arrives, you say, "Welcome to Everyday Burger Bar. How can I help you today? The customer tells you their order. You repeat it back to them to make sure it's correct. Then you say, "Your total is amount. Please drive to the window." At the window, you take their payment, give them the food, and say, "Have a great day." That's it. It sounds simple, right? But sometimes things don't go perfectly. Let me show you what can happen.
Drive-thru under pressure.
Welcome to Everyday Burger Bar. How can I help you today?
Hello. I want a combo meal, please.
Okay. Which combo would you like? We have the classic burger, cheeseburger, or deluxe burger combo.
The cheese cheeseburger combo.
Great. What size drink would you like? Small, medium, or large?
Sorry, what you say?
What size drink? Small, medium, or large?
Oh, medium, please.
Perfect. And what drink would you like?
Uh, CocaCola.
Coke. Got it. Is that everything?
Wait, also fries. More fries.
Oh, you want to add an extra order of fries?
Yes. Yes. Extra fries.
Okay. What size? Small, medium, or large?
Small is okay.
All right. So, that's one cheeseburger combo with a medium Coke and one small fries. Is that correct?
Yes, that is correct.
Perfect. Your total is $8.50. Please drive to the window. Thank you.
You're welcome. Hi, that's $850, please.
Here. Thank you for helping me. Sometimes I don't hear well.
No problem at all. The speaker can be difficult. Here's your food. Have a great day.
You too. Thank you.
First shift nerves.
You know, one of the best parts of this job is helping new team members. We all remember our first day. Today, we have Ben. He just started a few hours ago. He's working in the kitchen and he's learning fast, but like many new team members, he's a little nervous. Let me show you what happens when someone needs help.
Hannah, I need help. I made a mistake.
It's okay then. What happened?
I put the wrong sauce on this burger. The order says no special sauce, but I already put it on.
No problem. We can fix it. Just make a new burger. It happens to everyone.
But now we're behind on orders.
I'm so sorry, Ben. Listen to me. It's your first shift. Mistakes are part of learning. Don't worry about the time. Focus on doing it right.
But I'm too slow. Everyone else is faster than me.
Of course they are. They've been here for months. You've been here for 3 hours. Give yourself time.
I don't know if I can do this job.
I felt the same way on my first day. I burned French fries. I forgot to add cheese to a cheeseburger. I even gave the wrong order to a customer.
Really? You did that?
Yes. And look, I'm still here. You know what? Let me show you a trick for remembering orders. Look at the screen. Read it out loud before you start. That way, you won't forget anything.
Read it out loud. Yes. Try it. What does this order say?
One deluxe burger. No pickles. Extra lettuce.
Perfect. Now make it. Take your time.
I did it. I got it right.
See, you're learning. Every shift gets easier. I promise.
Thanks, Hannah. I feel better now.
That's what I'm here for. Now, let's get back to work.
Why this job matters?
You know, I want to talk to you about something important. Working in fast food isn't easy. Some people think it's a simple job, but it's not. You stand for hours. Your feet hurt. The kitchen is hot. Sometimes customers are impatient. It can be tiring. But you know what? This job also has good things. First, you learn valuable skills. You learn how to work with people. You learn how to stay calm under pressure. You learn how to solve problems quickly. These skills are useful in any job. Second, you help people every day. Think about it. A tired parent comes here with their kids. They don't want to cook dinner. You help them. You make them smile. You give them a good experience. That matters. Third, you work with a team. Look around. We help each other. When Ben made a mistake, we fixed it together. When Carlos was confused at the kiosk, I helped him. That's what a team does. And finally, this job can be a beginning. Maybe you won't work here forever. That's okay. But while you're here, you can learn, grow, and earn money. So, yes, the job is hard sometimes, but it's also meaningful. Be proud of what you do. You make a difference every day.
A treat for the kids.
Hi there.
Hi. Welcome to Everyday Burger Bar. How can I help you today?
I'd like to order two kids meals and one deluxe burger combo for me.
Sure. For the kids meals, which toy would they like? We have a puzzle or a small car.
Oh, let me ask. Hey, sweetie. Which toy? The puzzle or the car? My daughter wants the puzzle and my son wants the car.
Perfect. And what drinks would they like? We have apple juice, milk, or a small soda.
Two apple juices, please.
Great. And for your combo, what size drink would you like?
Large Coke, please.
Excellent. So, that's two kids meals with puzzle, car, and two apple juices, and one deluxe burger combo with a large Coke. Is that right?
Yes, that's perfect. It's a Friday treat for the kids. They had a good week at school.
That's so sweet. I bet they're excited.
They are. They've been talking about coming here all day.
Well, we're happy to have you. Your total is $1525.
Here you go.
Thank you. Your order will be ready in just a few minutes. The kids meals come with apple slices, too.
Oh, that's great. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome. Enjoy your meal. See kids, Hannah helped us. What do we say?
Thank you, Hannah.
Thank you, Hannah.
You're welcome. Have a wonderful evening.

From fried chicken to pizza, from burgers to tacos, everything. Are you ready? Let's join Kevin and Anna on their delicious journey.
Fast food fun.
Hey, Anna. This city has so many great food places.
I know, Kevin. I want to try everything, but it's hard to choose.
Hey, I have an idea. What if we try a different fast food place every day?
Every day? That's a lot of fast food.
Come on, it will be fun. We can try burgers, pizza, chicken, tacos.
Okay, you're really excited about this, but we have to walk a lot, too, to stay healthy.
Deal. Exercise and eating. Perfect balance.
So, where should we start today?
Good question. Let me think.
Burger or chicken? Look, there's a burger place over there and a chicken place on that side.
H the burger place looks really popular, but that line is so long.
Yeah, there must be at least 20 people waiting.
I'm hungry now. I don't want to wait that long.
Me neither. What about the chicken place? It looks busy, but not too busy.
Good idea. And their sign says crispy fried chicken. That sounds amazing.
I love fried chicken. My mom makes it sometimes, but I've never ordered it at a restaurant.
Really? Then this is perfect. Let's make it our first stop.
Okay. I hope it's as good as it looks.
Only one way to find out. Come on.
Fried chicken.
Wow, it smells so good even from out here.
I know, right? I can smell the spices.
I'm getting more hungry just standing here. So, are we really doing this a new place every day?
I guess we are. This is going to be interesting.
It's going to be delicious. Ready to order your first fast food meal?
Yes, but you have to help me. I don't know what to order.
Don't worry. We'll figure it out together. Let's go inside.
What should we order?
Okay. So, what looks good to you?
Everything looks good, but I don't understand all these combos.
A combo is a meal deal. You get chicken, a side, and a drink together.
Oh, that makes sense. Which combo should we get?
Well, the classic combo looks popular. Three pieces of chicken, fries, and a drink.
Three pieces. Is that enough for both of us?
Good point. We need two combos. Or maybe we should get a bigger meal.
Let's get two classic combos. Then we can each choose what we want.
Smart. You order first. I'll wait here.
Okay. Wish me luck.
Ordering fried chicken.
Hi. This is my first time here.
Welcome. My name is Mai. We have the best fried chicken in the city. Are you ready to order?
Um, yes. I'd like two classic combos, please.
Good choice. The classic combo has three pieces of fried chicken, French fries, and a drink. Can I ask which pieces you'd like for each combo?
Oh, we can choose. What pieces do you have?
We have legs, thighs, wings, and breasts. What would you like?
For the first combo, I'll take two legs and one thigh, please.
Perfect. And for the second combo, can I have two wings and one breast?
Of course. Now, what size drinks? Small, medium, or large?
Two medium drinks, please.
Great. What kind of drinks would you like? We have cola, lemon soda, orange juice, and iced tea.
I'll have the iced tea. And my friend wants cola, please.
Perfect. Would you like any sauce? We have ketchup, barbecue sauce, honey mustard, and hot sauce.
Can we have some honey mustard, and also some ketchup?
No problem. Is that for here or to go?
For here, please.
Wonderful. Your total is $25.
Here you go.
Thank you. Your order number is 15. We'll call you when it's ready.
Thank you so much. You were very helpful.
You're welcome. Enjoy your meal.
Enjoying the chicken.
This looks amazing and it smells even better.
I know. I'm so excited to try it. You did a great job ordering. I was impressed.
Really? I was so nervous, but Mai was very nice and patient.
She explained everything clearly. That helped a lot.
Okay, let's try it. Which piece should I start with?
The leg is always good. Nice and crispy.
M. Oh, wow. This is delicious. The outside is so crunchy,
right? And the inside is so juicy and tender.
This might be my new favorite fried chicken place.
Better than your mom's.
Don't tell her I said this, but maybe.
Your secret is safe with me. Want to try the honey mustard?
Yes. Oh, that's perfect with the chicken.
I told you this would be a good idea.
Okay, you were right. This is really fun.
Pizza time.
So, yesterday was fried chicken. Today is pizza.
I can't stop thinking about that chicken. It was so good.
Me, too. But I'm ready to try something new.
This pizza place looks authentic. See the wood oven inside?
Oh, yes. My dad says the best pizza comes from a wood oven.
Your dad knows his pizza. Let me order this time. You ordered yesterday.
Okay. But remember, we need enough for both of us.
Don't worry, I won't forget. Two people, two hungry people. [laughter]
Exactly. I wonder if they have garlic bread.
Only one way to find out. Let's go.
Hi. This place smells incredible.
Thank you. We make fresh pizza every day. What can I get for you?
My friend and I want to try your pizza. What do you recommend?
Our most popular is the pepperoni pizza. Classic and delicious.
That sounds perfect. Can we get a large pepperoni pizza?
Absolutely. A large pizza has eight slices. Is that good for two people?
That's perfect. Oh, and can we also add some garlic bread?
Of course. How many orders? One order has four pieces.
Let's get two orders. We're really hungry.
I like your appetite. Anything else?
Do you have salad?
Yes, we have a garden salad with tomatoes, lettuce, and cucumbers. What size would you like?
Just one large salad for us to share. What dressings do you have?
Italian, wrench, or balsamic vinegar?
Italian dressing, please. When in Rome, right?
I like you. And to drink
two bottles of water, please.
Perfect. One large pepperoni pizza, two orders of garlic bread, one large garden salad with Italian dressing, and two bottles of water. Your total is $32.
Here you go. By the way, is this your restaurant?
Yes, this is my family's restaurant. I work here 3 days a week.
That's amazing. You must know everything about pizza.
My nona taught me when I was a boy. Thank you for coming.
Thank you. We'll definitely be back.
Wow, this pizza looks perfect. Look at that cheese.
I know. And it's still bubbling from the oven.
So, you and Marco had a nice chat. What were you talking about?
He told me about his grandmother. She taught him to make pizza.
That's so sweet. My family's in the restaurant business, too. They run a Chinese restaurant.
Really? You never told me that.
My parents run it. I worked there when I was younger.
Impressive. So, you know all about restaurant life.
A little bit. Okay, enough talking. Let's try this pizza.
You're right. It's getting cold. Here, take a slice.
M. Oh, this is so good. The crust is perfect.
Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, just like good pizza should be.
And the garlic bread is amazing, too.
Everything is delicious. Marco really knows what he's doing.
Today's two great meals. I'm starting to like this adventure.
Just wait. Tomorrow gets even better.
Your turn to order.
So, I ordered yesterday at the pizza place.
You did a great job. That pizza was amazing.
Thanks. But now it's your turn again.
My turn. Oh, right. Fair is fair.
Exactly. Plus, you need the practice.
That's true. Okay, I'll order our burgers.
Just remember, we need two of everything.
Two burgers, two fries, two drinks. Got it.
Perfect. So, what do you want to get?
I'm thinking about a cheeseburger. What about you?
Same. Two cheeseburgers sound great.
Okay, I'll go order at that kiosk machine over there. Good luck. I'll wait here and save our table.
Oh no, this machine is so confusing. Hi there. I'm Sophia. Do you need some help?
Yes, please. I'm trying to order two burgers, but I don't understand this kiosk.
No problem. I can help you. What would you like to order?
Two cheeseburgers with fries, please.
Okay, let me show you. First, you touch start your order here.
Oh, okay. I did it.
Great. Now, do you want meals or just the burgers?
What's the difference?
A meal comes with fries and a drink. Just the burger is only the sandwich.
Oh, we want two meals, please.
Perfect. Now, touch cheeseburger meal here. See it?
Yes. Oh, but now it's asking me about size. What does that mean?
The size is for the fries and drink. Small, medium, or large.
Can I get different sizes?
Sure. What would you like?
One medium and one large, please.
Okay. Touch medium for the first meal. Good. Now, scroll down and touch add another meal.
Oh, I see. Now I choose large for the second one.
Exactly. You're getting it. Now it asks about drinks. Which ones do you want?
Can I have lemonade for one and cola for the other?
Of course. Just touch each drink. Perfect. Now, do you want to add anything extra like bacon, extra cheese, or pickles?
No, thank you. Just regular cheeseburgers.
Got it. Now touch add to cart. See, you did it.
Thank you so much. I was completely lost.
It's okay. These kiosks can be tricky at first. Now you just need to touch checkout and pay with your card here.
This is so much easier with your help.
You're welcome. Next time you'll be a pro. Enjoy your meal.
You did it. And the burgers look great. I almost gave up on that machine, but Sophia saved me.
She was very patient and helpful.
She really was. She explained everything step by step.
Okay, enough about the kiosk. Let's eat these burgers.
Yes, I'm starving. This one is yours, the large.
Thanks. Wow, this is a big burger.
Mine is perfect. Not too big, not too small.
How is it?
M really good. The cheese is melted perfectly.
And the fries are so crispy. Try one.
M. These are the best fries we've had so far.
I agree. This place knows how to make good fast food.
Even though that kiosk was confusing,
but you figured it out. I'm proud of you.
Next time I'll be faster. I promise.
Ordering hot dogs.
I can't believe we've tried three different places already.
I know. Fried chicken, pizza, and burgers. What's next?
Look, there's a hot dog cart over there.
Oh, I love hot dogs, but I haven't had one in so long.
Me neither. Street vendor hot dogs are the best.
Are they? I usually just make them at home. Trust me, street hot dogs have something special. All those toppings.
You're making me excited now. Let's go.
My turn to order again, right?
Yes. Your turn. Make sure you get two hot dogs.
Don't worry. I'm getting hungry just looking at that cart.
Hi. We'd like two hot dogs, please.
Sure. Would you like anything on them?
What do you have? We have ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, sauerkraut, and cheese.
Wow, that's a lot of choices. What do most people get?
Most people like mustard and relish or ketchup and onions.
Hm. Can I have different toppings on each hot dog?
Of course, that's very common. Okay. For the first one, can I have mustard, relish, and onions?
Sure. Do you want the onions raw or grilled?
What's the difference?
Raw onions are crunchy and a little bit spicy. Grilled onions are soft and sweet.
Grilled onions sound good. And for the second hot dog, just ketchup and cheese, please.
Perfect. Two hot dogs, one with mustard, relish, and grilled onions, and one with ketchup and cheese.
Yes, exactly. Oh, can we also have two bags of chips?
Sure. We have regular, barbecue, sour cream, and cheese flavor.
One barbecue and one regular, please.
Great. Anything to drink?
Two colas, please.
Okay. Two hot dogs. two bags of chips and two colas. Your total is $14.
Here you go. Thanks.
You're welcome. Your hot dogs will be ready in just a minute.
Perfect. The weather is so nice today.
It's a great day for a hot dog. Enjoy.
These hot dogs smell amazing.
I know. Look at all these toppings.

I love all the fresh toppings. >> You ordered six tasty tacos. That's perfect. >> Sophia helped me choose. She's so nice. >> She really is. Okay, which tacos are which? >> These two are chicken. That's completely different from the meat ones. >> I know. That's why I love Mexican food. So much variety. >> And this horada is perfect with the tacos. Sweet and creamy. >> The ham is good, too. It's like cranberry juice, but different. >> This might be my favorite meal so far. Mine, too. But we still have more places to try. Ordering grilled chicken. You know, we've been eating a lot of fast food. >> I know. It's all been delicious, but maybe we should try something healthier. >> I was thinking the same thing. My jeans feel a little tight. [laughter] >> Mine, too. Look, there's a grilled chicken place up ahead. >> Grilled chicken? We tried so many different fast food places. >> I know. I can't believe how much we did. Which place was your favorite? >> H, that's hard to choose. I really loved the tacos. >> The tacos were amazing. I think I liked the pizza best or maybe the grilled chicken. >> You know what? I learned so much English this week. >> Me, too. At first, I was nervous about ordering, but now it feels easy. >> The staff were all so patient and helpful. >> They really were. They explained everything clearly >> and we saw some of them at different restaurants. That was funny. >> I know. It made everything feel more comfortable. >> You know what else? I feel more confident speaking English now. >> Same here. We can order anything anywhere. >> This was such a good idea. Thank you for suggesting it. >> I'm glad you agreed to do it with me. It was more fun with a friend. >> Definitely. So, what's our next adventure? >> I don't know, but I'm sure we'll think of something. >> As long as it involves food, I'm in. >> Deal. But for now, let's just enjoy this gelato. >> Perfect idea. Cheers. >> Cheers. >> Wow, Kevin and Anna had such a great adventure, didn't they? They visited so many different fast food places and learned so many useful phrases for ordering food in English. Did you notice how they asked questions, made choices, and spoke with confidence? That's exactly how you can practice, too. Which scene was your favorite? Was it the pizza shop, the taco place, or maybe the ice cream parlor? Leave a comment and tell me. Today we have 10 real coffee shop conversations to help you learn English. You will hear Jake and Emma visit a coffee shop. Emma is a little nervous about ordering, but Jake helps her learn. You will discover useful phrases for ordering coffee and learn interesting facts about coffee, too. Let's get started. Walking to the cafe. >> The weather's perfect today. Let's get some coffee. >> Okay. But I have to tell you something. I'm nervous about coffee shops. >> Nervous? Why is that? >> Last month, I went to this busy cafe. There were so many people behind me in line. The menu had all these crazy choices. I didn't understand half the words. Oh man, that sounds stressful. >> Yeah, the barista kept asking me questions, but I didn't know what to say. I felt so rushed. Everyone was just waiting for me. >> Aw, Emma, I'm sorry that happened. >> I just said coffee, please. Really fast. Got something I didn't even want. >> Well, today is going to be different. I'll help you out. >> You sure? I don't want to look silly. >> You won't look silly. Ordering coffee is easy once you know how. And this cafe not busy right now. Look. See? Only two people inside. Pretty quiet. >> Okay, that's good. All right, I'll try. >> Great. And I'm going to show you what to say. It's like a formula. >> A formula for coffee. >> Yeah. First you say hello. Then you say what drink you want, then the size, then any extras, like what kind of milk. That's it. >> Hello. Drink size. Extras. I can remember that >> exactly. And if you don't understand something, just ask, "What does that mean?" or "Can you explain that?" >> Okay. Thanks, Jake. I feel better now. >> You're going to do great. Trust me. Now, let's go in. >> Looking at the menu. Oh, wow. Look at this menu. So many choices. >> I know, right? But don't worry. Let me break down the main ones for you. >> Okay. What's the difference between all these? >> Well, they've all got coffee in them, but they're made in different ways. >> I see latte, americano, espresso, cappuccino. How do I even choose? >> Good question. Do you like your coffee strong or mild? >> I think I like it mild, not too strong. >> Then you probably want something with milk in it, like a latte. >> What's a latte exactly? >> A latte is espresso with steamed milk. It's smooth and mild. Not too strong at all. >> That sounds good. But wait, what about these sizes? Tall, grande, venti. What does that even mean? >> Oh, yeah. Those are kind of confusing at first. Tall's actually the smallest one. It's about this big. >> Wait, tall is small. That doesn't make sense. >> I know, right? It's weird. Grande means large in Italian. That's the medium size. And venti means 20 in Italian. That's the biggest one. 20 o. So tall is small, grande is medium, and venti is large. >> Exactly. You got it. It takes some getting used to. >> Okay, I think I want tall, then. I don't drink a lot of coffee. >> Perfect. And you can choose your milk, too. Regular milk, oat milk, almond milk, soy milk. >> Oh, I like oat milk. So, I want a tall latte with oat milk. >> Exactly. See, you already know what you're going to order. >> Wait, but what are you getting? >> I'm getting a grande americano. That's espresso with hot water added. It's stronger than a latte. >> Why do you want something stronger? >> Because I really like that coffee flavor. But hey, you know what? This is going to sound weird, but where does coffee actually come from? >> What do you mean? Doesn't it just come in those little powder packets like instant coffee? That's what a lot of people think. But no, the real story is way more interesting. Let me show you. >> Where does coffee come from? >> Okay. So, coffee doesn't start as brown powder. It starts as a plant. >> A plant? Really? >> Yes. Coffee grows on farms, usually in warm countries. The plants have green leaves and they grow coffee cherries. Cherries like the fruit. >> Exactly. But these cherries are special. They start green and then they turn red when they're ready. >> So coffee comes from cherries. >> Yes. Inside each cherry, there are two coffee beans. The farmers pick the ripe red cherries by hand. >> That sounds like a lot of work. >> It is. After picking, they remove the beans from the cherries. Then they dry the beans in the sun for many days. >> In the sun. Why? >> To remove the water. Dry beans last longer and taste better. After drying, the beans are green. They look very different from the brown coffee we know. >> So they start as cherries, then become green beans, >> right? Then the green beans are put in bags and sent all over the world to places like this coffee shop. >> Wow, I never knew that. So, what happens next? >> That's where roasting comes in, but we'll talk about that later. First, let's order. >> Okay, I want to see how this works. Ordering Jake's turn. Worouo. Good morning. What can I get for you today? >> Good morning. I'd like a grande americano, please. >> Perfecto. One grande americano. Would you like room for milk or cream? >> No thanks. Just black is fine. >> Okay, no problem. Oh, and I should mention we have a special today. Buy one drink, get a pastry half off. >> Oh, really? What kind of pastries do you have? >> We have croissants, muffins, and biscotti. The chocolate croissants are very popular. >> H, that sounds good. But I think I'm okay with just a coffee today. Thanks, Bo. >> No worries. And do you have a rewards card with us? >> Actually, yeah, I do. Here you go. >> Perfecto. Let me scan this. Oh, nice. You have enough points for a free drink today. >> Oh, wow. Really? >> Yes. You have 12 points and you only need 10 for a free drink. Would you like to use them? >> That's awesome. Yeah, let's use the points. So, my drink is free. >> Exactly. Your Americano is free today and I'll put your name down for the order. What's your name? >> Jake. >> Wonderful, Jake. Your drink will be ready in just a few minutes. >> That's great. Thank you so much, >> PGO. You're welcome. Who's next? Ordering. Emma's turn. Good morning. What would you like today? >> Hi, I would like a venti cappuccino, please. Okay. One venti capuccino. What kind of milk? Oh. Um, can I have regular milk? Of course. One venti capuccino with regular milk. Anything else? Wait, sorry. I think I said the wrong thing. No problem, dear. Take your time. What would you like? I wanted a latte, not a cappuccino. And I wanted it tall, not venty. I'm sorry. Hey, no worries. This happens all the time. So, a tall latte? Yes, please. A tall latte. Perfect. And you wanted regular milk? Yes, actually. Can I have oat milk instead? Absolutely. One tall latte with oat milk. Anything else? Maybe a little vanilla. Vanilla in the coffee. Yes, we can add vanilla flavor. It's very good. Makes it a vanilla latte. Oh, yes, please. That sounds delicious. Perfect. One tall vanilla latte with oat milk. And your name? Emma. Lovely name. That's $5, please. Here you go. Thank you, Emma. Your drinks will be ready soon. You two can sit outside if you like. Beautiful day. Thank you so much. You're very helpful. My pleasure. Enjoy your coffee. Tasting the drinks. See, that wasn't so bad. >> I made a mistake, though. I said cappuccino and venti. >> But you fixed it. You said sorry. I meant a latte and tall. That was perfect. >> The barista was so nice. She didn't make me feel bad at all. >> That's how it should be. Good baristas are patient. Now, try your drink. >> Okay, here goes. M. Oh, wow. This is really good. It tastes sweet and creamy. >> That's the vanilla and oat milk. Lattes are pretty gentle drinks. >> What's yours taste like? >> Here, try it. Just a little sip. >> Okay. Woah, that's strong. Super different from mine. >> Yeah. Americanos don't have any milk, just espresso and water. Way stronger taste. >> I can really taste the coffee in there. It's not sweet at all. Exactly. Some people love strong coffee. Some people like it mild with milk. Both are good. >> Mine's definitely on the mild side and a little sweet from the vanilla. I really like it. >> I'm glad. This is your coffee style now. You know what to order next time. >> Yeah. Tall vanilla latte with oat milk. I can totally remember that. >> Perfect. Hey, do you want to hear something cool? >> What? >> Here's the thing. You got your drink for five bucks, but I got mine free. That rewards card is actually pretty useful. >> Wait, really? Your drink was free? >> Yep. I had 12 points, and you only need 10 for a free drink. So, I saved like $4 today. >> That's awesome. How do you get points? >> Every time you buy a drink, you get one point. So, after 10 drinks, you get one free. >> Oh, that makes sense. I should get one of those cards. >> Definitely. You can sign up online or just ask them for a card next time. >> Cool. I will. So, your Americano tastes stronger than my latte, right? >> For sure. Way stronger. >> But why? Is it just because of the milk? >> That's part of it, but it's also about how the beans are roasted. Do you want to know more about that? >> Yeah, actually, I'm kind of curious now. coffee roasting and strength. >> Remember those green coffee beans from the farm? >> Yeah, the ones that dried in the sun, >> right? When they arrive at the coffee shop, they're still green. They need to be roasted. >> What's roasting? >> Roasting means heating the beans in a special machine. The heat changes the beans from green to brown. >> Like cooking them. >> Exactly. And here's the interesting part. You can roast them for different amounts of time. >> What happens if you roast them longer? >> Good question. If you roast for a short time, you get a light roast. The beans are light brown. If you roast for a long time, you get a dark roast. The beans are very dark brown, almost black. >> Does that change the taste? >> Yes. Light roast tastes more fruity and bright. Dark roast tastes stronger and more bold. >> So, your Americanos probably dark roast. >> Exactly. And your latte might be medium or light roast. But here's something people don't know. >> What? >> Dark roast actually has a little less caffeine than light roast. >> Wait, what's caffeine? >> Oh, good question. Caffeine is a natural substance in coffee. It's what makes you feel more awake and energetic. >> Oh, so caffeine gives you energy, >> right? That's why people drink coffee in the morning. But here's the surprising part. Dark roast actually has a little less caffeine than light roast. >> Really? But it tastes stronger. >> I know it seems weird. The strong taste comes from the roasting, not from more caffeine. When beans roast longer, they lose a tiny bit of caffeine. >> So, light roast has more caffeine. >> Just a little more. Yeah. But most people choose by taste, not by caffeine. >> That makes sense. I like the mild taste of my latte. I don't need strong coffee flavor. >> And I like the bold taste of dark roast. Everyone's different. >> This is so interesting. But I still have a question. Before you said the word espresso a few times. What exactly is espresso? >> Ah, that's a great question. Let me show you. >> Espresso basics. >> Okay. Espresso is the base for most coffee drinks. It's very important. >> What makes it special? >> Espresso is made with an espresso machine. The machine pushes very hot water through ground coffee beans with high pressure. >> High pressure. >> Yes. The water is forced through very quickly and strongly. This makes a small concentrated shot of coffee. >> How small? >> One espresso shot is just one or two oz. Very small but very strong and flavorful. So that tiny cup of espresso is the base for everything. >> Exactly. Now let me explain the drinks. An espresso is just that small shot by itself. >> Okay. What about your Americano? >> An Americano is one or two shots of espresso plus hot water added. That makes it bigger but still strong. >> And my latte. A latte is espresso plus steamed milk. Lots of milk. That's why it's mild and creamy. What about a cappuccino? I almost ordered that by mistake. >> A cappuccino is also espresso and milk, but it has more foam on top and less milk than a latte. >> So latte has more milk. Cappuccino has more foam. >> Yes. And cappuccino is usually smaller and stronger than a latte. >> Now I understand why I changed my order. I wanted something mild and creamy, not small and foamy. >> Exactly. You made the right choice for your taste. >> What about a mocha? I saw that on the menu, too. >> A mocha is a latte with chocolate added. It's sweet and delicious. >> Oh, maybe I'll try that next time. You should. Now you know the basics. Espresso is the start. Then you add water or milk or foam or chocolate. >> This makes so much sense now. Thank you for explaining. >> You're welcome. Now you can order any coffee drink with confidence. >> Coffee culture. This is nice. I like sitting here. >> Me too. Coffee shops are special places. >> What do you mean? Look around. Some people are working, some are reading, some are talking with friends. >> Yeah, everyone's doing something different. >> But they all came to a coffee shop to do it. There's something about coffee shops that feels cozy. >> I think it's the smell of coffee and the comfy chairs. >> True. And the gentle background noise. It's not too loud, not too quiet. >> In other countries, they have tea houses. They feel kind of similar. >> Really? Tell me about that. >> People go to tea houses to relax and talk. They drink tea and spend time together. It's about community, you know. >> That's exactly like coffee culture here. It's a social place. Actually, there's this cool story I heard about coffee houses. >> What story? Back in the 1600s, coffee houses in Europe were called penny universities. >> Penny universities? What's that? >> For just one penny, you could buy a cup of coffee and sit all day. And people would have these amazing conversations about science, art, politics. It was like going to school, but in a coffee shop. >> That's so cool. So, coffee shops have always been about more than just coffee. >> Exactly. They've been places where people share ideas and connect. Some of the greatest thinkers used to meet in coffee houses. >> I love that. It's not just about the drink only. It's about the experience and the people, >> right? And that tradition continues today. Look at us. We're here drinking coffee, but we're also learning together, talking, enjoying the day. >> Yeah. I can see why people love this. It feels good to just slow down and be here. >> That's coffee culture. In Italy, where espresso comes from, people go to cafes every day, sometimes multiple times. It's just part of life. >> I could get used to that. Now that I know how to order, I want to come here more often. >> You should. You've got your drink down, you understand the basics, and you're not nervous anymore. >> You're right. I actually feel really confident now. >> Should we head home? >> Yeah, let's go. But I want to remember everything you taught me today. >> Walking home. >> So, can you remember what you ordered? >> Yes, I ordered a tall vanilla latte with oat milk. >> Perfect. And if someone asks you about coffee, what can you tell them? I can tell them that coffee comes from cherries on a farm. The beans are dried and roasted. Then they make espresso and espresso is the base for many drinks. >> Excellent. What about roasting? >> Light roast tastes fruity. Dark roast tastes strong and bold. But dark roast actually has a little less caffeine. >> Wow, you learned so much today. >> I did. And I learned that a latte has lots of milk. A cappuccino has more foam. And Americano is just espresso and water. >> You're going to be a coffee expert soon. I still have questions though, like what's a macchiato? >> Oh, that's espresso with just a small spot of milk. Very strong. >> And what about cold brew? I saw that on the menu, too. >> Cold brew is coffee made with cold water over many hours. It tastes smooth and sweet. >> There's so much to learn. >> That's okay. You don't need to know everything today. You learned the basics. >> That's true. And I successfully ordered my own drink. That's what matters. >> Exactly. And the barista was so nice to you. >> She was very patient. I felt comfortable making a mistake and fixing it. >> That's the best part. Making mistakes is okay. That's how we learn. >> You're right. Thank you for helping me today, Jake. Anytime, Emma. Next time, maybe we try that mocha you mentioned. >> Yes. Or maybe I'll be brave and try something completely new. >> That's the spirit. See, you're not nervous anymore. >> You know what? You're right. I'm not nervous at all. I actually want to go back soon. >> Perfect. Now you have a new favorite place to visit. >> Thank you so much for watching today. I hope these conversations helped you learn useful English for ordering coffee. Did you notice how Emma felt nervous at first, but then became confident and how Jake explained everything in a patient, friendly way? These are real skills you can use. Today we have 10 real supermarket shopping conversations to help you learn English. You will hear a couple buying groceries under time pressure. You will also hear other shoppers asking for help, comparing prices, and solving problems. These are the kinds of conversations you will have when you go shopping. Let's get started. A surprise visit. >> Good morning. The coffee is ready. >> Thank you. Oh no, Mike. Look at the refrigerator. We have almost nothing. I know. We need to go shopping today. >> Yes, we can go this afternoon. We have time. >> That sounds good. Oh, wait. My phone is ringing. Hello. Hi, Mom. >> Your mother? >> Yes. Uh-huh. Really? Today? What time? >> What? What is happening? >> Okay, Mom. See you soon. Bye, >> Mike. What did she say? >> My mother is coming to visit us today. >> Today? Right now? >> Yes. She will arrive in 2 or 3 hours. >> 2 or 3 hours? Oh, no. We have no food. >> I know. This is a problem. We need to go shopping right now. >> Yes, right now. What does she like to eat? >> She likes healthy food. Vegetables, chicken, fish. And remember, she has a nut allergy. >> Nut allergy. What is allergy? >> An allergy means her body has a bad reaction to something. If she eats nuts, she will get sick. >> Oh, I understand. No nuts. That is important. Yes, very important. We need to check the labels on all the food. >> Labels. >> Yes. The labels are the small papers on the food packages. They tell us what is inside. >> Oh, I see. The paper with words. Okay, >> good. Now, we also need to watch our budget. >> Budget? >> Yes. Budget means the money we can spend. We only have about $50 until payday tomorrow. >> $50? That is not very much. >> I know. We need to be careful. We need to find good deals. >> Deals? >> Yes. Deals are special prices when something is cheaper than usual, like a sale. >> Oh, yes. A sale. Okay, I understand. >> Great. Let's make a shopping list. What do we need? >> We need vegetables, carrots, tomatoes, lettuce. >> Good. We also need chicken for dinner. And rice. >> Yes, rice. And fruit. Apples and oranges. >> Perfect. And bread. We have no bread. Okay, this is a long list. >> We can do it, but we need to hurry. My mother will be here soon. >> Okay, let's go. I will get my purse. >> And I will get the shopping bags. We can save money if we bring our own bags. >> Good idea. Let's go quickly. Race against time. Okay, we are here. Where do we start? Let's start with vegetables. Look, here are the tomatoes. >> How many tomatoes do we need? >> Let's get six. They look fresh and ripe. >> Fresh and ripe. >> Yes. Fresh means they are new, not old. Ripe means they are ready to eat, not green. >> Ah, I see. These tomatoes are red. They are ripe. >> Exactly. Now, let's find lettuce. >> Here is the lettuce, but there are two kinds. Which one? >> This one is iceberg lettuce. This one is romaine lettuce. >> Which is better? >> Roma is healthier. My mom will like it. >> Okay. Roma. Got it. What is next? >> We need carrots. Let's see. These carrots are $2 per pound. >> Per pound? >> Yes. Per pound means for each pound of weight about this much. >> Oh, okay. So, if we get two pounds, it is $4. >> Exactly. You're getting good at this. Let's get one pound of carrots. >> Just £1. >> Yes. Remember our budget. We need to be careful. >> You are right. We have only $50. >> Now, we need fruit. Look, these apples are on sale. On sale means a good deal, right? >> Yes. Usually they are $3 per pound, but today they are only $2. >> That is good. Let's buy apples. >> How many should we get? >> Maybe six apples. >> That's about £2. Okay, six apples. Now, let's find oranges. >> Here are oranges. Oh, but they are expensive. Yes. $4 for a bag. That's too much. >> Should we skip the oranges? >> Good idea. We can skip them and save money. We're doing great. Let's find the bread section next. >> Okay. Oh, Mike, what time is it? >> It's 10:30. >> Your mother will arrive at 12:30. We have 2 hours. >> I know. We need to hurry. Come on, let's go quickly. >> Okay. Where is the bread? >> The bread is this way. Follow me. >> Find a deal. Okay, we have the vegetables. Now we need bread. >> Yes, bread is on the list. Let's see what they have. >> There are so many kinds. Which one should we get? >> My mom likes whole wheat bread. It's healthier than white bread. >> Whole wheat. Okay. Is there a deal? a deal. Let me check the prices. >> This bread is $4. That is expensive. >> Yes, that's a lot. Let's look for a sale. >> What about this one? >> That one is $350. Still expensive. [sighs and gasps] >> We need to find something cheaper. >> Wait, look at this sign. It says special offer. >> Special offer? What does that mean? A special offer is the same as a deal. It means the price is lower than usual. It's a sale. >> Oh, so special offer, deal, and sale are the same. >> Yes, they all mean a good price. This bread is usually $4, but today it's only $2. >> $2? That is much better. >> Yes, this is perfect. It's whole wheat and it's a great price. Should we buy two loaves? >> Yes, two loaves is a good idea. >> So, that is $4 for two loaves. >> Exactly. That's a good deal. >> I am happy we found this. It saves money. >> Yes, we're saving money. That's good. We still have our budget. >> How much money have we spent so far? >> Let me see. Vegetables were about $8. Apples were $4. and bread will be $4. That's $16. >> $16. So, we have $34 left. >> Yes, $34. We still need chicken, rice, and maybe something for dessert. >> Dessert? Like cake or ice cream? >> Yes, but we need to be careful. My mom likes healthy food. >> Maybe we can get fruit for dessert. >> That's a good idea. We already have apples. >> Okay. Should we find the chicken now? >> Yes, let's go. The meat section is over there. >> Great. I feel less worried now. We are doing okay. >> Yes, we're doing well. We're making good time. >> Good time. >> It means we're not too slow. We still have enough time. >> Oh, I see. Okay, let's keep going. Healthy choices. Okay, here is the chicken section. Let's see what they have. >> There are many different packages. Which one should we buy? >> Let's compare them. This one is chicken breasts. >> How much is it? >> It's $7 for one pound. >> $7? That seems expensive. Yes, it is a little expensive, but chicken breast is very healthy. My mom will like it. >> What about this one?
It says chicken thighs. Chicken thighs are darker meat. They're cheaper. This is $5 per pound.
$5. That saves $2.
Yes, but chicken breast is better. It has less fat.
Less fat.
Yes. Fat is the oily part of meat. Less fat means healthier.
Oh, I understand. So, chicken breast is healthier than chicken thighs.
Exactly. My mom always chooses healthy food.
Okay, but we need to watch our budget. Maybe we should buy the cheaper one.
H, you have a point. Let me see. How much chicken do we need? We are three people. Your mother, you and me, right? So maybe 1 1/2.
If we buy chicken breast, that is about $10.
Yes, $10. That's a lot.
If we buy chicken thighs, that is only $7.50.
Okay, let's do this. We'll buy chicken thighs. It's still healthy and we save money.
Good idea. We can use the extra money for other things.
Exactly. Now, let's look at the labels. We need to make sure there are no nuts.
Why would chicken have nuts?
Sometimes the factory that packages the chicken also packages food with nuts. So, there could be traces of nuts.
Traces. Traces means very small amounts. Too small to see but still dangerous for people with allergies.
Oh, that is important. We need to check carefully.
Yes, very carefully. Let me read this label. It says packaged in a nut-free facility.
Nut-free facility.
A facility is a building or factory. Nut-free means no nuts are there. So, this chicken is safe.
Perfect. Let's buy this one.
Great. I'll put it in the cart. Now, what else do we need?
We need rice.
Okay, the rice is in the next aisle. Let's go.
The snack debate.
Mom, can we get these chips? They look really good.
Tyler, we already have chips at home.
But these are a different flavor and they're on sale.
On sale or not? We don't need more chips.
Come on, Mom. Just one bag.
Tyler, we talked about this. We need to buy healthier snacks.
But chips are my favorite.
I know, but they're not good for you. Too much salt. What about these crackers? Are crackers better than chips?
Let me see. Yes, these whole grain crackers are much better. They have more fiber.
Fiber?
Fiber helps your digestion. It's good for your stomach.
Okay. So, we can get the crackers.
Yes, we can get one box of crackers, but that's it.
What about cookies? Can we get cookies, Tyler?
We're here to buy healthy food.
I know, I know, but maybe just one small package.
No cookies. How about this? We can get some fruit instead. Apples or bananas?
Fruit? That's boring.
Fruit is not boring. It's sweet and good for you.
But I want something crunchy. Apples are crunchy and they're much healthier than cookies.
Fine. Can we at least get some yogurt?
Yes, yogurt is a good choice. We can get yogurt.
The kind with chocolate chips.
No chocolate chips. We'll get plain yogurt with some honey.
Honey is okay, but it's not as good as chocolate.
Tyler, honey is natural sugar. Chocolate chips are full of processed sugar. What's processed sugar?
Processed sugar is made in factories. It's not as healthy as natural sugar from fruit or honey.
Okay, I understand. So, crackers and yogurt.
Yes. And some apples.
Fine. Can I pick the apples?
Of course. Come on. The produce section is back this way.
Okay. But next time, can we please get chips?
We'll see if you eat all your healthy snacks this week. Maybe next time.
Really? That's a deal.
Yes, it's a deal. Now, let's go.
The missing item.
Okay, we have the chicken. Now, we need rice.
Yes, rice is very important. My mom loves rice with her chicken.
Here is the rice section. Which one should we get?
I'd like to buy jasmine rice. My mom loves the taste and smell when it cooks.
Okay. Jasmine rice. Where is it?
It should be right here on this shelf.
I don't see it. Is it here?
No, I don't see it either. That's strange.
Look, there's a sign. What does it say?
It says temporarily out of stock.
Temporarily out of stock.
What does that mean?
Temporarily means for a short time. Out of stock means the store doesn't have it right now.
Oh, no. So, they have no jasmine rice.
That's right. They sold all of it. They need to get more. When will they get more?
I don't know. Maybe tomorrow or next week.
But we need rice today. Your mother will be here in less than 2 hours.
I know. I know. Don't worry. We can buy a different kind of rice.
A different kind?
Yes. Look, here is white rice and here is brown rice. Which one is better?
Brown rice is healthier. It has more nutrients.
Nutrients.
Nutrients are the good things in food that help your body, like vitamins.
Oh, I see. So, brown rice is like the jasmine rice we wanted.
Not exactly. Brown rice has a different taste. It's a little chewier.
Chewier.
Yes. Chewy means you need to chew it more. It's not as soft as white rice.
Will your mother like it?
I think so. She likes healthy food. Remember, brown rice is very healthy.
Okay, let's get brown rice then.
Good. This bag is 5 lb. That's enough for several meals.
How much does it cost?
Let me see. It's $6.
$6? That's okay. We still have money in our budget.
Yes. Let's check. We spent $16 before. Then $10 for chicken. That's $26.
And $6 for rice. That's $32 total.
Good. So, we have $18 left.
$18. Is that enough?
I think so. We just need a few more small things. Okay, I feel better now. We found rice.
Yes, we solved the problem. Sometimes we need to be flexible.
Flexible.
Flexible means able to change plans. We wanted jasmine rice, but we can't get it. So, we change our plan and get brown rice.
Oh, that's a good word. Flexible. I like it.
Great. Now, let's keep going. We're doing well.
Yes, but we need to hurry. What time is it now?
It's 11:00. We still have time. Let's go.
A little help.
Excuse me. You speak English?
Yes, I do. How can I help you, dear?
I am looking for olive oil. I cannot find it.
Oh, olive oil. Yes, it's right here. Let me show you.
Thank you. You are very kind.
It's no trouble at all. Here. This is the olive oil section.
Oh, I see it now. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome. Are you looking for a particular brand?
Brand?
Yes. Brand is a special name of the product. It helps you know which one you want. Like this one is called Mediterranean Gold.
Ah, yes. Brand. I understand. No, any brand is okay.
Lovely. Where are you from if you don't mind me asking?
I am from Spain. I moved here 3 months ago.
Spain? How wonderful. I visited Barcelona once. Beautiful city.
Yes, Barcelona is beautiful. I am from Madrid.
Ah, Madrid. And how are you finding it here?
Finding you mean how do I like it here?
Yes, exactly. Are you enjoying living here?
Yes, I like it. But my English is not very good. Shopping is difficult.
Oh, nonsense. Your English is quite good. You're doing brilliantly.
Thank you. That is kind. But I make many mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes when learning a language. It's perfectly normal. You are very nice. Can I ask you something?
Of course, dear. What is it?
What is the difference between expensive and cheap?
Ah, good question. Expensive means it costs a lot of money. Cheap means it costs less money.
Oh, I see. So, expensive is high price. Cheap is low price.
Exactly right. You've got it. This olive oil is $8. Is that expensive or cheap?
for olive oil. That's about average. Not expensive, not cheap. It's a fair price.
Fair price. That means a good price.
Yes. Fair means reasonable. Not too high, not too low.
Thank you. I learned many words today.
You're doing wonderfully. Would you like some help finding anything else?
No, I think I am okay now. But thank you. You are very patient.
It's my pleasure. Good luck with your shopping.
Thank you. Have a nice day.
You too, dear. Take care.
Running out of time.
Mike, what time is it?
It's 11:20.
11:20? Your mother will be at our house in 1 hour.
I know. We need to hurry.
We still need to buy oil and some vegetables for salad.
And we wanted to find a dessert. Remember?
A dessert? Yes. But we need to find one without nuts.
Let's get the oil first. It's in this aisle.
Here is the olive oil. Which size should we get?
We don't have time to compare. Let's just take this one.
Okay. This one is $7.
That's fine. Put it in the cart. What else?
Salad vegetables. We need cucumbers and bell peppers. The produce section is all the way back there. Come on, let's go quickly.
Okay, I'm coming. Oh, wait. We forgot something.
What? What did we forget?
Salt. We have no salt at home.
Salt. Okay. Salt is in the spice aisle.
But that's in the other direction.
I know, but we need it. Come on, we can do this. Let's split up.
Split up.
Yes. Split up means we go separately. You get the salt and I'll get the cucumbers and peppers.
Separately. But what if I cannot find it?
Don't worry. The salt is easy to find. Just look for the sign that says spices and seasonings.
Spices and seasonings.
Yes. Seasonings are things you add to food for flavor, like salt, pepper, and herbs.
Oh, okay. I understand. So, I look for the spices section.
Exactly. Get one container of salt. Not too big, not too small.
Medium size. Got it.
Great. I'll meet you at the checkout in 5 minutes.
5 minutes. Is that enough time?
It has to be. We're running out of time.
Running out of time means we have no time left.
Yes, exactly. It means we need to hurry.
Okay, I understand. I will be fast.
Perfect. See you in 5 minutes.
Wait, Mike, what about the dessert?
We'll have to skip it. We don't have time.
Are you sure?
Yes, we can serve fruit for dessert. We have the apples.
Okay. Apples for dessert. That's healthy anyway.
Exactly. My mom will like that. Now go. Hurry.
Okay, I'm going. See you at the checkout.
Self-checkout trouble.
Excuse me. I need help, please.
Of course, I'm David. What seems to be the problem?
This machine is not working. I cannot scan my items.
Okay, let me take a look. What happened?
I scanned this bread, but then it stopped.
Did you put the bread in the bagging area?
Bagging area.
Yes, the bagging area is this part here. After you scan an item, you need to place it here.
Oh, I did not know that. I am sorry.
That's okay. Many people make this mistake. Let me help you. Can you scan the bread again?
Like this?
Yes. Perfect. Now place it in the bagging area.
Okay. I put it here.
Good. See the machine is working now.
Thank you. But what is this message? It says unexpected item.
Unexpected item means the machine found something it did not expect. Did you put anything else in the bagging area?
I put my purse there. Is that wrong?
Ah, yes. That's the problem. You can only put the items you are buying in the bagging area. The machine weighs everything.
Weighs. What is weighs?
Weighs means measures how heavy something is. The machine checks that the weight matches what you scanned.
Oh, I understand. So, I cannot put my purse there.
That's right. Here, I can remove the error for you.
Thank you so much. You are very patient.
It's no problem. That's what I'm here for. Now, let's continue. What's next? I have tomatoes. How do I scan tomatoes?
Good question. Tomatoes don't have a barcode, right?
Barcode?
Yes. The barcode is those black lines on packages. The machine reads the barcode.
Oh, yes, the black lines. But tomatoes have no barcode.
Exactly. For fresh vegetables and fruit, you need to use this button. It says produce.
Produce. What is that?
Produce means fresh fruits and vegetables. Click on this button.
Okay. I click here. Now what?
Now you need to find tomatoes on this list. See here it is. Touch the picture of tomatoes.
Oh, I see. Like this.
Perfect. Now place the tomatoes on this scale. The machine will weigh them.
Okay. Is this correct?
Yes, that's right. Now, the machine will tell you the price.
It says $2.50.
Good. Now, place the tomatoes in the bagging area and continue with your other items.
Okay. Thank you for all your help. This is very confusing.
I understand. Selfcheckout can be tricky at first, but you're doing great now.
Thank you. You explain very clearly.
You're welcome. If you need more help, just call me.
Thank you. I will try to finish by myself now.
Great. Good luck.
Ready to go.
Finally, it is our turn.
Yes. Let's put everything on the belt quickly.
Okay. Here is the bread, the chicken, the vegetables.
Good. I'll put the rice and the oil here. and the salt, cucumbers, and bell peppers.
Perfect. We got everything.
I hope this goes fast. What time is it?
It's 11:40. We still have time.
Good morning. How are you today?
Good morning. We're in a bit of a rush, actually.
No problem. I'll go as fast as I can.
Thank you. We appreciate that.
No worries. Do you have a rewards card?
A rewards card.
Yes. It's a card that gives you points when you shop. You can use the points to get discounts later.
Oh, yes. I have one. Here it is.
Perfect. Let me scan it. Do you have any coupons today?
Coupons. Oh, yes. I forgot. I have some coupons on my phone.
Great. The store app has digital coupons, right?
Yes, exactly. Here I have a coupon for bread and one for chicken.
Perfect. Let me scan these. The bread coupon saves you $1. The chicken coupon saves you $2.
That's $3 saved. That's good.
Every little bit helps. Okay, let me total everything up. Your total is $45.30.
45.30. Perfect. We're under budget. Will that be cash or card?
Card, please.
Okay, you can insert your card in the machine like this.
Yes, perfect. Now, enter your PIN.
Done.
Processing. Okay, your payment went through. Here's your receipt.
Thank you so much.
Thank you for shopping with us. Have a great day.
Sarah. We did it.
Yes, we got everything we needed and we stayed under budget. We spent $45.30.
We still have almost $5 left.
Good teamwork. Now, let's hurry to the car.
What time is it?
It's 11:45. We have 45 minutes to get home and start cooking.
Can we make it?
We have to. Come on, let's go.
I am so relieved. We got everything we needed.
Yes, we did great. chicken, vegetables, rice, and fruit.
And the best part, no nuts. Everything is safe for your mother's allergy.
Yes, we checked all the labels carefully.
Thank you for helping me with English words today. I learned a lot.
You're welcome. You did great. Now, let's get home and cook.
Yes, let's go. Thank you so much for watching today. I hope these conversations helped you learn useful English for shopping at the supermarket. Did you see how Sarah and Mike worked together under pressure? They had a surprise visitor, a tight budget, and very little time, but they made a plan, helped each other, and succeeded. You can do the same when you practice English. Which conversation was most useful for you? Was it learning about deals and special offers? Or maybe checking labels for allergies? Please leave a comment and tell me. If you enjoyed this video, please give it a like and subscribe to our channel. Share this with a friend, family member, or colleague who is learning English.
