Research. Um, so we do a lot in the wearable device space. So we have kind of two major projects right now at the moment there. So we have a partnership with Apple, uh, that we're running a few different studies with Apple using the watches and phones, and then we have a partnership with Samsung, uh, in which we're doing some similar work, a little bit different, but using, uh, some of their devices as well. Uh, so I kind of just helped to oversee that, try to keep the the ship running in the right direction. Uh, and I've been been there for a while now. Um, so yeah, why don't why don't you tell me a little bit about you? I I saw your CV, obviously. Am I right in thinking have you just started college?

Yeah, I'm a freshman. Yeah.

Okay. Is this like in the past couple weeks you started college?

Yeah, I started, um, on August 27th.

Nice. Congratulations. How's that going? You're like a weekend.

That's great. Yeah. No, um, I really like Brandeise. It's an awesome college. Um, I'm having a lot of fun. Thank you for asking.

Yeah, of course. That's good. That's a a big step, obviously. Um, all right. So, why don't you tell me a little bit about what you're, you know, interested in, what you're looking to do.

Okay. So, I haven't introduced myself properly, I guess. I'm Mahogany. It's very nice to meet you. Um, so I when I was looking into your lab, like the first thing that really struck me was that you guys work with zebrafish. And me personally, um, I've always like had a bit of a fascination with animals. That's just I actually I visited the marine biological lab last, um, last year. So, um, when I saw that the McCrae lab works with zebrafish, I was like instantly hooked. It's very interesting to me. Um, uh, me personally, I have worked with, um, anti-diabetic research in the past. I actually last year I presented, um, a poster, um, about anti-diabetic research at the American College of Gastroenterology, and for that, I actually received, um, an outstanding poster presenter award. So, I have some research experience that, um, I would be very interested in applying to the McCrae lab because I'm very interested in, um, cardiovascular biology, and, uh, I would love to expand my horizons in the research field.

Okay. Yeah, that's awesome. Um, so, obviously very impressive that you're looking to do this at this stage in your career. I guess I'd have to like some practical questions like how much time effort are you thinking you'd like to to propose? I mean, I don't know, would any of this be tied into your school in any way? Are there any like research requirements or anything that it would hit, or is this all just personal interests in wanting to kind of expand from there?

Well, this is definitely personal interest. Um, Brandeise does have, um, excellent research, I'm sure, but, uh, I was really hooked on your lab. Um, I want to go to medical school, and, uh, some of the things that your lab deals with are very interesting to me. So, um, for as for like hours and things like that, my I'm very, um, flexible. My classes end every day at around 12:00 p.m. Besides on Tuesday, I have a recitation at 6 PM on Tuesday, but, um, weekends and other like days of the week, I am very much free. Um, it is a personal interest. Um, but a personal interest I'm very passionate about.

Okay. Yeah, that's great. Um, all right. So, why don't why don't we uh plan on a few things. One, uh, I'll connect you with some folks that are, uh, some of the scientists in the lab that are working with the the zebrafish specifically. Um, maybe you you can ask them some questions about their projects and and find if there's something that would be interesting to you. Um, and then we can think about the best way to kind of get you set up because obviously we're we're supportive of trying to kind of offer those experiences. I think that at the very minimum, we we could think about getting you set up and maybe there's some hours throughout the week that you could work, but we could also kind of have you in place to maybe, uh, do something more involved in the in the summer or when you have, you know, even more availability. Um, I think it'd be a little tough to think that we'd be able to kind of get a project that is, you know, yours that we could get ownership for you in the current state. Um, but that is something we actually like to do is, you know, not just have, uh, kind of younger interested academics come and and just work for postdocs, but we want you to try to kind of, uh, get some ownership over something yourself and and try to help facilitate that. Um, usually that's over the course of summer months to be honest, whenever, uh, we have we have college students that are joining, but since you're, you know, in the area obviously and and might be willing to come in some other times, we could see if there's something that we could kind of get you set up for to to do as you're you're coming and going. And if you're willing on weekends, you know, there is always some stuff that's available on the weekends as well, which is not the most desirable for some of the full-time employees. Um, but at at a minimum, I think this would kind of get your foot in the door. Um, and have you be able to hit the ground running whenever you do have more time available, whether that's, you know, over some breaks or definitely over the summer if you're interested in around over the summer, we could try to set up a a more involved project. But does that seem, does that seem good and like something you'd want to do?

Of course. Yeah, I'm very flexible, like I said. So, whatever works for the lab is fine with me.

Okay, perfect. Then we will plan. I the next step, I'll, uh, introduce you to at least one of the postdocs, maybe one of the techs. Um, you can chat with them, kind of just get a better sense of what they're actually doing, uh, in the lab and on a kind of day-to-day basis. And then we can circle back, uh, whether it's them with me or you with me as well, and we'll start working through the logistics of what it looks like to kind of get you onboarded through the hospital and your clearances and everything so that you could come in.
