The Geography of Sumatra, Explained

Indonesia is one of the most populous countries in the world. As of April 2026, it had an estimated population of over 287 million. Now, this makes it the fourth most populous country in the world.

Indonesia is made up of over 17,000 islands. These include islands like New Guinea and Borneo. Both are over 700,000 km, making them larger than the country of Afghanistan. But both of these islands are shared with other countries.

The largest island located entirely within Indonesia is the island of Sumatra. At over 440,000 km, it's not only the largest island located entirely within Indonesia, it's also one of its most fascinating. It sits on one of the most geologically violent stretches of ocean floor. It has more active volcanoes than almost anywhere else on Earth. It's home to the last forests on Earth where tigers, elephants, orangutans, and rhinos all share the same canopy. While its western coast generated the deadliest tsunami in recorded history. Its interior contains a lake sitting inside a super volcanic crater so large that when it erupted 74,000 years ago, it may have nearly ended the human species.

However, I don't see much content about the geography of Sumatra on YouTube and other social media until now. Now, Sumatra is the sixth largest island on Earth. Over 440,000 km of rainforest, volcanoes, river deltas, coastlines, and plateaus, stretching nearly 1,800 km from its northwestern tip to its southeastern tip. It has been continuously inhabited for tens of thousands of years and it was for much of the medieval period one of the most strategically important places in the world.

Now I just mentioned that not a lot of people talk about the geography of Sumatra and I think that's because it kind of sits in a geographical blind spot in the western imagination. That's probably because it's dominated by two other islands. One being the extremely popular Bali and the second being Java which is home to Jakarta. Not only the largest city in Indonesia but also the largest metro area in the world.

Now the island of Sumatra is Indonesia's second most populous island with an estimated population of over 62 million. Its orientation is northwest to southeast running at an angle that reflects the underlying geology of this region. To its east is the narrow straight of Malaa which separates Sumatra from the Malay Peninsula and at its narrowest this straight is only 2.5 km wide. It is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world. Roughly a quarter of all global seaborn trade passes through this straight including the majority of the oil flowing from the Middle East to China, Japan and South Korea. Meaning Sumatra's northeastern coast helps define the economics of maritime Asia.

While to the west is the vast expanse of the open Indian Ocean. There are no major land masses between the western coast of Sumatra and the eastern coast of Africa. A distance of over 5,000 km. Now this long stretch of open ocean makes the western coast of Sumatra one of the most wave exposed coastlines in the world. It's also one of the most tsunami vulnerable.

Now the island is biseected by the equator in its central region which does have profound consequences for its climate. Sumatra has no real seasons in the temperate sense. No summer, winter or spring. Instead, what it does have is rain distributed across the year with local variation driven by topography and the prevailing winds. Annual rainfall in parts of western Sumatra exceed 4,000 mm. The interior is perpetually warm and humid. This climate, unrelenting in its warmth and moisture, is the engine of everything biological that makes Sumatra extraordinary.

Now, Sumatra exists here because of a geological collision. Between three major tectonic plates off the western coast of Sumatra, running roughly parallel to the island for its entire length, lies the Sunda Trench. This is one of the deepest ocean trenches in the world, plunging to nearly 7,300 m below sea level. This trench marks the boundary where the Indian and Australian tectonic plates dive beneath the Eurasian plate. The oceanic crust here descends into the mantle, melting as it goes. The melted rock rises and where it reaches the surface, it erupts as volcanoes.

Now, Sumatra is the result of all these geological forces. The Bukit Burisan mountain range whose name literally means parade of hills in Malay runs the entire length of Somatra's western spine. It is a volcanic arc studded with active and dormant strata volcanoes rising over 3,800 m. The western slope of these mountains drop steeply towards the Indian Ocean coast while the eastern side descends gradually across hundreds of kilometers of lowland swamp, river deltas and petland towards the Malaca Strait. And this asymmetry shapes much of the island. The pattern of rivers, the distribution of agriculture, and the location of its cities.

Sumatra's east coast faces the straight of Malaga and has always been more accessible, more commercially connected, and more densely populated. While Sumatra's west coast faces the open Indian Ocean and has always been more isolated and more exposed to geological violence, more culturally distinct.

Now running along the spine of the Bukit Burisan mountains within the interior of this island lies the great Sumatran fault. It's a 1900 km strike slip fault, one of the longest of its kind in the world. Now this is geologically distinct from the subduction zone offshore and it is known to create significant earthquakes. In 2009 a 7.6 six magnitude earthquake centered near Padang killed over 1100 people and destroyed tens of thousands of buildings and that earthquake actually originated in this strike slip fault.

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, one that I'm sure most of you remember. It was magnitude 9.1 making it the third most powerful ever recorded. Now that was not on the great Sumatran fault. Instead, the epicenter of that earthquake was in the Sunda Trench. And that sits on something known as the Sunda Mega Thrust. And on that fateful December day, the Sunda mega thrust snapped up, displacing an estimated 30 cubic km of water. And the tsunami that followed killed approximately 230,000 people across 14 countries. It obliterated entire coastal cities in minutes. and it remains the deadliest natural disaster of the 21st century.

Now, as we venture deeper into the interior of Sumatra, we find a lake, but not an ordinary lake. This is Lake Toba, and it's the largest volcanic lake in the world. It sits on one of the most violent geological events in the history of Earth. Because this lake sits inside a caldera, a collapsed remnant of a super volcano. It measures roughly 100 km long and 30 km wide. The lake itself was over 500 m deep. This ancient super volcano last erupted approximately 74,000 years ago. In an event classified as a VI8 eruption, the maximum category on the volcanic explosivity index. It was the largest volcanic eruption in the last 2 million years. The eruption ejected an estimated 2,800 c km of material. For reference, the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens released approximately 3 c km. Ash from Lake Toba has been found all over the Indian subcontinent and as far as Lake Malawi in East Africa.

Now, what exactly happened here and how it affected the rest of the world, we're not entirely sure, but we do have some hypothesis. And it suggests that this eruption triggered a volcanic winter lasting years, causing a dramatic collapse in global temperatures and a corresponding population bottleneck in the human species. Genetic evidence suggests that the global population may have fallen to somewhere between 3,000 and 10,000 individuals in the aftermath. Whether the Toba eruption caused this or it was merely a coincidence, it still remains debated. But the scale of the eruption is not in doubt. What is now a serene blue lake surrounded by steep green walls was 74,000 years ago a catastrophe on a planetary scale. Interestingly, Toba today is considered dormant, but not extinct. The magma system beneath it is still active, and it's still being monitored by geologists to this day.

Now, as we head deeper into Sumatra, we find the rainforests and these are among the oldest on Earth. And this long-term stability resulted in a forest of extraordinary complexity and depth. The biodiversity figures here are staggering. Sumatra is home to an estimated 10,000 plant species, over 250 mammal species, roughly 580 bird species, and hundreds of species of reptiles and amphibians. Many of these are endemic found in Sumatra only and many of them are critically endangered.

Now like I mentioned in the beginning of this video, Sumatra is the last place on Earth where tigers, elephants, orangutans and rhinos all share the same forest. The Sumatran tiger is the smallest surviving tiger subspecies. Its stripes are closer than those of the Bengal tiger. Its body is more compact, but its temperament is no less formidable. The global wild population is estimated at fewer than 400 individuals, and it is classified as critically endangered.

The Sumatran elephant found here is smaller than its African cousin and its Indian cousin, but with a proportionately larger head and a more rounded back. It moves through the forest in small matriarchal groups, following ancient pathways that predate the villages and roads that now intersect them.

Sumatra is actually home to two of the three known orangutan species. Those being the Sumatra orangutan and the exceedingly rare Tapanuli orangutan, which was only found as a distinct species in 2017, and as of today, only a few hundred individuals remain, and it's considered the rarest of the great apes. Both species spend most of their time in the trees, rarely descending to the ground. Sumatan orangutans have also been known to use tools, such as using sticks to catch and eat insects. The Sumatan orangutan population in the wild is estimated to be around 13,000 individuals concentrated in the forests of Ache and North Sumatra.

Now, finally, we have the Sumatran rhinoceros. It is one of the rarest species of rhino on Earth along with the Java rhinoceros. It is covered in reddish brown hair. The total wild population is estimated at fewer than 80 individuals scattered in small fragmented groups across a handful of protected areas. There are so few and they are so dispersed that finding mates has become a conservation crisis. The main reasons that most of these species I mentioned are declining in population is because the rainforest of Sumatra are under serious threat. Issues like deforestation, human wildlife conflict, and the illegal wildlife trade are creating immense pressures on the wildlife in this region.

Now, as we continue moving east, we find a new landscape altogether because a long gentle eastern slopes of the Bukit Burisan range give rise to several major rivers, including the famous Musi River. These rivers carry enormous volumes of sediment and tannin stained water across hundreds of kilometers of flat lowland before fanning out into the vast deltas of the Malaka straight coast. These rivers are extremely dark, the color of strong tea. They're stained by the organic acids leeching from the pete lands through which they flow. The pete lands of eastern Sumatra are among the most extensive in the world. Pete, which is partially decomposed organic matter accumulated over thousands of years in waterlogged conditions, can be up to 20 m deep in parts of the Sumatran lowlands. These pete lands store carbon in quantities that make them globally significant. A single hectare of deep tropical pete can store more carbon than an equivalent area of old growth forest.

Humans have lived on Sumatra for at least 70,000 years, but it is the last 2,000 years where Sumatra gained international recognition. The Sri Vijaya Empire based near what is now Pelimbong in southeastern Sumatra emerged in the 7th century CE and became one of the most powerful maritime empires in history. At its height, the Sri Vijaya controlled the straight of Malaa and the Sunda strait, effectively controlling two maritime choke points through which virtually all trade between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea had to pass.

Now, this strategic location made this empire extremely wealthy and Shvijaya became a major center of Buddhist learning. The empire's influence extended to the Malay Peninsula, to Java, and across the maritime world of Southeast Asia. But this once powerful empire declined in the 13th century. However, the geographic logic that did make it powerful has not changed.

The rise of Islam in Sumatra began on the north coast. The first Islamic kingdom in Southeast Asia emerged in northern Sumatra in the 13th century and Islam spread southward and eastward along trade routes over the following centuries. Today, Sumatra is one of the most Muslim parts of Indonesia with the northern regions having a particularly deep and conservative Islamic tradition. Christianity is the second largest religion in Sumatra and it's mostly concentrated in western Sumatra primarily with the Mntawei people. There are smaller Christian communities with the Batak and the Nias people as well. Overall, approximately 2.3% of Sumatra is Christian with the vast majority belonging to the Protestant denomination.

Now that we've discussed most of the physical geography of Sumatra, let's take a few minutes to discuss the different cities of Sumatra. Madan is Sumatra's largest city in Indonesia's fourth largest with a metropolitan population approaching 4 million. It sits on the broad fertile lowlands of North Sumatra, approximately 60 km from the coast, a location that made it the center of one of the most profitable plantation economies in colonial history. Because in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area around Midan became the heart of the Dutch East Indies tobacco production and later rubber and palm oil production. And this brought huge numbers of Japanese, Chinese, Tamil and Bak workers into this region. The demographic mix this created makes Madan one of the most ethnically complex cities in Indonesia today. The legacy of the plantation era is visible in the city's architecture. The Mimmoon Palace built by the Sultan of Delhi in 1888. Just to be clear, that's the Sultan of Delhi which used to be a state in East Sumatra, not the Delhi in India. It's a grand synthesis of Malay, Mughal and European architectural styles. There's also the great mosque of Maidan with its moish domes and minoretses. Built in 1906, it remains one of the most beautiful buildings in Sumatra. Maidan today is a sprawling traffic dense commercial city. It acts as the economic gateway to northern Sumatra and a departure point for most tourists visiting Lake Toba.

In the southeastern region of Sumatra lies Palumbang on the banks of the Musi River. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Southeast Asia. It was the capital of the Sri Vijagaya Empire for six centuries. Today, Pelimang is Indonesia's eighth largest city with a population of around 1.7 million. The Musi River remains the city's defining geographical feature, connecting the city to both the coast and the Sumatran interior. The city is home to the Ampera Bridge. It spans the Musi River and has become Palenong's most recognizable image.

At the northern end of Sumatra lies the city of Banda Ache, which is the capital of the Ache province and the city closest to the epicenter of the 2004 earthquake and tsunami. Now, Banda Ache was hit extremely hard from that tsunami. Entired neighborhoods were obliterated and the death toll in the Ache province alone was over 170,000 people. That is a massive number. It's almost too large to even visualize. The city of Banda Ache itself lost over 61,000 people. About 25% of the city's population and 60% of the buildings in the city were lost. But what has happened since is one of the most remarkable urban reconstructions in modern history. Banda Ache was rebuilt with international aid with Indonesian government investment and the extraordinary resilience of the people. Today the city has a population of 267,000 residents with a metro population of over 500,000.

In conclusion, Sumatra is so much more than the largest island located entirely within Indonesia. It truly is a geological hot spot. It's home to many active volcanoes and critically endangered wildlife like the Sumatran tiger and Sumatran rhinoceros. And it's also home to one of the deadliest disasters in recent memory along with one of the most resilient comebacks of any city in recent memory. It's a hotbed for ecoourism and adventure travel. And on top of all of that, it's home to a site that potentially wiped out the human species altogether. I hope in this video I did some justice to the fascinating geography of Sumatra.
