Type one muscle fibers. These are slow twitch fibers built for endurance. They contract slowly, resist fatigue, and use oxygen efficiently to produce energy. Because they contain lots of mitochondria and blood vessels, they appear darker red than other fibers. Type one fibers are active during long activities like running, walking, cycling, and maintaining posture. Endurance athletes usually have a large amount of these fibers.

Type 2 a muscle fibers. These fibers balance speed and endurance. They contract faster and produce more force than type 1 fibers, but they also tire more quickly. Type 2 A fibers can use both oxygen and stored muscle fuel for energy, making them useful for sports that require repeated bursts of movement. Activities like swimming, rowing, and team sports rely heavily on them.

Type 2X muscle fibers. These are the fastest and most powerful muscle fibers in the body. They generate explosive force for sprinting, jumping, and heavy lifting, but they fatigue very quickly. Type 2X fibers rely mostly on anorobic energy, which works fast, but does not last long. Power athletes and sprinters often develop these fibers more than endurance athletes.
