And we want to welcome all of our first-time visitors. We welcome you this morning. It feels good to be back in the house of the Lord. Everybody together, join with angels and all the heavenly hosts and just say amen. And praise the Lord. My, it's good to see you today.
This time last week, I was chewing the nails down to the quick. I'm telling you, it's good to be back in God's house. We're living in desperate times. I'm calling a prayer meeting for tomorrow night at 7:00 right here in the sanctuary. I know we have an activity every night of the week. This is a busy church. I know you have to make decisions about which ones to attend. Some of you travel long ways, but I still feel the need to call for prayer. We'll do some singing and a whole lot of praying tomorrow night.
Father, I thank you now for the privilege of standing up to represent you, your son, by the power of your Holy Spirit. Lord, I thank you for the church. I thank you for this local church. We have millions of brothers and sisters all over the world right now who are worshiping you. I ask you now, Lord, to be pleased with what is said, lay it on my heart, put it on my tongue, and then let us receive it with gladness. Be glorified in all things.
Later, Lord, we will pick up a piece of bread and just a little bit of juice to represent what you did for us. May it be more meaningful today than it's ever been before. Forgive us for our sins, shortcomings, transgressions. Forgive us, Lord, for sins of our tongue, the sins of our mind and heart. Forgive us for the steps we took in the wrong direction. And may we be counted worthy this morning to receive the cup and the bread after we have received the word. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Thank you for being seated.
>> [clears throat] >> When you study the scriptures, you learn a theological phrase at some point, two words, called types and shadows. In the study of scripture, you have types of things. That means they represent a person of utmost interest in scripture. Then you have shadows. These are vague pictures of events in the Bible that lead to a greater, deeper truth. So, in the Old Testament, you have types of people that represent, always, Jesus. And shadows, which are events, things, parts of the tabernacle, kinds of worship that point to Jesus. Everything points to Jesus in the scripture. The Bible's not about Israel. Israel's a part of it, but Jesus is the central theme of scripture. The Bible's not about the church. Although the church is a very important tributary to the stream of salvation. Everything points to Jesus. So, in Colossians chapter 1, I believe it says Paul says, "These things" talking about tabernacle worship, sacrifices, on and on. These things are shadows of things to come, but the substance is Christ. In a word, in other words, it's all points back to Jesus.
So, then there's that very famous phrase they use in theology and in seminaries, the New Testament is concealed in the Old and the Old is revealed in the New. See, when you're studying the Old Testament, you're getting a shadow, a vague picture of the New Testament truth. When you study the Old Testament figures such as Moses. Moses brought the law, Jesus brings grace and truth. You read about David. He is a type of Jesus who conquered as a lad conquered the greatest giant of all and became king.
>> [clears throat] >> Or you read about Joseph. Wow, what a story. That Joseph story fascinates me to no end. Joseph who was rejected by his brethren the Jews, sold for a mere pittance, became a slave, but in his faithfulness, God elevated him to the highest position. Hallelujah. Those are all types of Christ events. When the blood was applied to the lintels of the door, the post of the door, and the Lord said, "When I see the blood, I will pass over you." So, Passover is a shadow. Or if you see Israel coming across the Red Sea, that's a shadow of salvation coming out of bondage, being baptized in water and taking a trip through a place called Earth and life and time.
Then you have the type, which is what I want to dwell on right now, called Isaac. In the 24th chapter of Genesis, there's not as much about Isaac as there is Abraham and Jacob, but what a beautiful truth. Some people call them stories. I don't like to call anything in the Bible a story. I call them truths. Narratives of truths. So, here is a type and here is a shadow of one of the greatest events that's yet to happen in the New Testament.
>> [clears throat] >> The Bible says that Abraham was an old man, well advanced in years, and the Lord had blessed him in all things. And Abraham said to the oldest servant of the house, Now, when you read this chapter, and I know you will when you go home, that'll be the first thing you do after you eat lunch, cuz you want to see if I told you the truth, and you will become so interested in this, you want to read it for yourself. Abraham said to his chief servant, and if you go through the entire chapter, the servant never has a name. Not one time. He's just called the servant. He said to the servant, and I'm going to, you know, shorten this a bit. It's time for my son Isaac to have a wife. I want you to go to a foreign land. I want you to choose a wife for my son. That's your mission in another land. Get a bride for my son. You know where I'm going, don't you? Well, then let's go.
And so, the servant gathered [clears throat] his other workers and servants. They went to a foreign place. They came to a well. And the servant knelt down and prayed, and he said, "Oh Lord, my God, for my master's sake, help me find his son a bride." And he said, "Lord, let it be that the woman who comes to me and says, 'I will give you a drink,' and then says, 'I will give your camels a drink, also,' let her be the one chosen for my master's son." And you know that's exactly what happened. This is a great story. Sorry, a great truth. That's exactly what happened. The Lord God showed the servant kindness.
And so when the servant and his camels, 10 of them, gathered there at the well with the workers. A young beautiful lady came out named Rebecca. And he said, "I, I pray thee, may I have a drink?" She said, "Of course, I'll give you a drink. And by the way, while I'm at it, why don't I just give all your camels a drink, too?" And he went, God's a great God, isn't he? Now, I understand that a camel can drink at one time about 5 to 6 gallons of water. He had 10, that's 50 gallons. I don't know how many lifts she made or trips she made, but she didn't [clears throat] seem to mind it at all. And the servant said, "Who do you belong to?" And she told him her daddy's name and her cousin's name and some things about the house that she grew up in. And the Bible says in verse 26, the man bowed his head and worshipped the Lord. See, this unnamed servant wanted credit for nothing. His job was to get the father a bride. His mission was to go anywhere he needed to go and find the perfect bride for his master's son.
And so as we read on down, she took him to her father's house. And he told the story of how he had prayed that the woman who gave him drink and also gave his camels water would be the one for his master's son to be his wife. Verse 36 is an interesting verse. "Sarah, my master's wife, bore a son to my master when she was old." Listen. "And to him he has given all that he has." This thing's building up. He's saying, "This man for whom I have come to get a wife has gotten everything, inherited everything from his father. He's over all things." And then the servant told the narrative again of how he prayed for success. And when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the Lord bowing himself to the ground. Watch this. Then the servant brought out jewelry, silver, jewelry of gold, and clothing and gave them to Rebekah.
>> [clears throat] >> The servant brought gifts to give to the bride. Wow. Then the time came. She had to make a decision. Her father and her brother brought her in, stood her in front of the servant with all of his servants and asked the question, "Will you go with this man?" It's your decision. He's come after you. He's given you gifts. It's up to you. "Will you go with this man?" She said, "I will go." She said that not even knowing the man she was to marry. Nothing about his family. She agreed to go knowing that his destination or his home was hundreds of miles away. That she would be with total strangers except for her nurses, her keepers. She would be on smelly camels going through places where thieves rested. Hot days, cold nights, uncertainties with a total stranger. "Will you go with this man?" "I will go."
We don't know how long the journey was, but we know that while she was on that journey, she learned a lot of things about the man she did not know. She learned of him. The more she learned of him, the more she longed for him. And when she started longing for him, she started looking for him. John Phillips is one of my favorite writers, and he said that's the essence of Christianity. Learning, longing, and looking for the one you've never seen but love. Hallelujah. I've been out of work for a couple of weeks, so you don't mind if I let some pent-up emotions come out, do you?
The Bible says, "So the servant took Rebekah and departed." Now, Isaac came from the way of Beer-lahai-roi, for he dwelt in the south. And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening. Watch it. He left his father's house. He went out in the field to watch and wait and meditate. And he lifted his eyes and looked. And there the camels were coming. Then Rebekah lifted her eyes. And when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from her camel. For she had said to the servant, "Who is this man walking in the field to meet us?" The servant said, "It's my master." So she took a veil and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things he had done. Then Isaac brought her into his mother's tent. And he took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. Isn't that beautiful? But it's a shadow of something greater. It's a shadow of the rapture of the church.
When Christ comes to get a bride he yet does not know. A bride who's getting herself ready for someone she's never seen. And the whole thing lines up with God's word. You see, God the Father laid up his own son on the altar. That happened at Moriah. Isaac willingly laid himself down on an altar so that his father could pierce his heart with a knife just because God told him to do it. Now, this son needs a wife. This son needs a wife from a foreign country, a far away country. And the father tells the Holy Spirit, "Go get my son a bride. Go now. Be about the Father's business. There's a bride in that country waiting to be gathered." And so, that's exactly what the Holy Spirit has been doing for the last 2,000 years. Who are his servants? The apostles and the prophets and the writers of the scripture. The Holy Spirit has been wooing and winning souls. The day you got saved, you became a part of this bride. God was working on you a long time before you were saved. The Holy Spirit was after you and his workers, the preachers and the prophets and the teachers, were all teaching truth that would draw you to him.
And so, here we sit today. I've never seen Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ does not even know what his full bride looks like yet, because he is waiting in heaven and the Holy Spirit is busy gathering the bride for Christ. And so, whether you know it or not, you were all asked the same question one day. When the Holy Spirit spoke to you, I don't know when that was. I remember as a 4-year-old hearing about Jesus in a Sunday school class. All my life, I had heard about Jesus. All your life, things came together. God arranged people and songs and prayers and experiences and sermons and churches. God arranged it all for the one question you would be asked, "Will you go with this man? Will you follow this Holy Spirit to meet Jesus in the air? Will you make the decision that even though you've not seen him, you love him? Do you understand that when you say, 'Yes, I will go,' you will go with gifts because God has given the church gifts? Do you know how blessed we are? Look at the gifts that God has given us through the Holy Spirit. He gives us understanding. He gives us discernment, strength, power, knowledge, wisdom, faith. Oh, what gifts, fellowship. Oh, he loaded us down when we said, "I WILL GO." GOD MADE sure that you had everything that you would ever need in this trek to meet the Lord in the air.
Now, you got to understand when you start off, you say, "I'll go," BUT YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE GOING to get into. WHEN WE SAID, "OH, YES," WE PROBABLY SAID IT IN a moment of a great joy. It might have been in a great big service. There was lots of wonderful worship and it maybe even a little emotional hysteria, BUT YOU SAID, "I'LL GO. I'LL GO." YOU HAD NO IDEA that when you said that, he'd put you on a camel somewhat and you didn't know how long the journey was and you didn't realize that there would be some rough days, some days when thieves would try to steal, kill, and destroy you. Some days when family would turn against you. Some days when you'd get homesick and wonder, "Did I do the right thing?" Other times WHEN YOU SAID, "WHAT HAVE I DONE? I'VE NEVER MET THIS MAN BEFORE. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE." But you made that decision to follow Jesus.
And let me tell you what I think must have happened while Rebecca was with the servant and the workers. She listened to them talk about this master she was going to marry. It was then she found out what a humble man he was. He willingly laid his life down in obedience to the command of the Father. She listened as she learned of his tenderness and his kindness. Yes, a love he had for his mother that moved her. She's never seen him. But as she's journeying along this road, she's listening. As she listens, she learns more and more about him. Hey, I almost lost it. Folks, that's the importance of church. Church, you come to listen. Church, you come to learn. Church, you come to fall in love with him more than you ever have in all of your life. I'm going to say it and I know people will be upset with me and they'll try to explain it and justify it. Don't do that. I'm too old. I don't have time. It is not the same sitting at home looking at a screen while we're having church. There's something ABOUT BEING WITH OTHER PEOPLE WHO SMELL LIKE A CAMEL. OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE AS CONFUSED AS YOU ARE. OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAD TO SACRIFICE TO GET HERE. THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT WHAT THE BRIDE-TO-BE HAS TO GO THROUGH THAT MAKES YOU APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT HE WAS WILLING TO SEND THE SPIRIT AND ASK YOU, "WILL YOU GO WITH THIS MAN?" AND WHEN YOU SAID, "I WILL [screaming] GO." YOU HAD NO IDEA, BUT GOD HAS ORDERED EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE AND EVERY STEP THAT YOU'VE TAKEN.
>> [applause] >> LEARNING. Jesus said, "Take up my cross and my yoke and learn of me." You see, you just can't listen without learning. And she learned all the things she heard made her fall in love with him. Not his handsomeness. That had nothing to do with it. She didn't know what he looked like. Hey, by the way, he didn't know what she looked like, either. But it was something about him that made her fall in love. You know, old Brother Peter said one time, "We've never seen him, but we love him." Hallelujah. We've never seen him, but we rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory. That's again, that's what church is all about. We all get together. We've all had our issues. We all have our heartaches and heartbreaks and our joys. And every bit of it makes us love him more than ever. I will tell you today I love Jesus more than I've ever loved him in my life. It's the love of God in me that he first showed to me. You learn of him. You learn that he doesn't talk very loudly. And he doesn't move very quickly. And he's not really moved by your emotions. And you can't threaten him or frighten him or put him in a corner and quote his own word back to him and make him do anything. God does what he wants to do when he wants to do it.
>> [clears throat] >> And it's always right. And by the time you get to be my age and the age of some of these real old people, want me to point them out to you? You're finally getting to the place that you realize, and I know this is worn out scripture, I know it is. You get to the place that it actually has deeper meaning. For we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, who are the called according TO HIS PURPOSE. GOD'S WORKING IT OUT. God's preparing a bride. God didn't tell the bride how long the journey would be or how rough it would be either. It can get rough. I don't know. I think I'll tell a personal story here.
As you know, Sandra and I have four daughters. I don't remember which daughter this was, but it was a long time ago. And whoever she was was about yay big. I want to say four. I know. So, we were on the east side of town. That's where the church was in those days. And she was with me that day for some reason, and I had to take the car in to get it repaired. She wanted to ride with Daddy, and it was in July. And so, I took it in, and and guess what they said. Oh, this is worse than we thought.
>> [laughter] >> Oh, we didn't realize this. This is special. This is going to take a little more work than we thought. You're going to have to leave the car with us. I said, "Can I just sit and wait?" Well, it's going to be a number of hours. And that little girl said, "I'm hungry. I'm thirsty. It's hot." I said, "Well, we can sit right here and wait." "I'm hungry and thirsty and hot." It just so happened, my mom and dad lived about 2 miles up the road on Sharon Amity, east side. I said, "Well, we can walk to Grandma's then, and we can I can come back and get the car later. Grandma's got something to drink and eat." She said, "All right."
Folks, we hadn't gone 300 yards. She said, "I can't. I can't do this. I can't do this." I said, "You have to do it." She sat DOWN ON THE SIDEWALK. AND HERE I AM TRYING TO PULL her up, and I said, "Oh my God, somebody's going to think I'm kidnapping this child." It was an ugly scene, and if people would ride by and go, "What in the If they'd had cell phones, they would have called me in back then. I said, "Look here. Here's what we got to do. Let Daddy pick you up." She said, "Carry me. Carry me." I said, "All right." And I, you know, I said, "I'm an asthmatic. Old Dad's an asthmatic. I ain't got enough air to carry myself, honey. I'll do the best thing I can." So, I carried her for a while. I stopped and I said, "Get on my back." She got on my back, walked a little while, waving at people. And then she said, "I want to get on your shoulders." So, she got on my shoulders and her She was just hot, sweaty. And I said, "I CAN'T I CAN'T DO THIS. I can't." So, we were both moaning and groaning and I put her down. I said, "I tell you, let me make a deal with you. If you'll let me hold your hand and walk with me for a little while, I'll tell you some stories. I'll tell you some great stories." Well, I told her one and then she said, "I CAN'T DO THIS." SO, I carried her a little while and told some more stories. Then I put her down and she walked and she was fascinated. I told her about the time my dad bought us a pony. Remember that, Dennis, Janice? And he was such a small pony that they delivered the pony to our house in the back of a car. It was a mini Shetland pony. And I said, "When he came up the road, his tail was out one window and his head was out the other window. They had taken the back seat out and there he stood. And they drove UP IN THE DRIVEWAY AND OPENED THE DOOR AND SAID, 'HERE'S YOUR HORSE.'" We got out and we said, "Hello." And she was fascinated. But that one wore off and I had to tell her another one. After a while I got to lying.
>> [laughter] >> I just made stuff up. I couldn't breathe. She couldn't take the heat. And we turned the corner and I said, "Looky there." She said, "That's grandma's house." I said, "Yes." She ran to it. I couldn't run. I was just glad I got her to that point. AND SHE SAID, "WHEN WE GET THERE, TELL ME SOME MORE STORIES." HERE'S THE POINT. I didn't realize how long this journey would be when I said, "I will go with this man." I didn't realize how tough and hot and laborious and burdened I could be. And I found out that sometimes the Holy Spirit >> [clears throat] >> will pick you up and carry you. And you can just catch your breath. But there are other times he says, "You're going to have to learn to walk." And he puts me down and says, "Come on." I can't do it. But he starts telling me things. That fascinates me. He starts revealing truths >> [snorts] >> that touches my heart. Supernatural strength comes into me. About the time I think I cannot take another step, the Holy Spirit will say, "By the way, you remember that verse of scripture that says the Lord will take care of those who put their faith and trust in him?" And just goes on and on and on. Do not fret. Do not worry. I am your strength. I am your shield. And I will tell you something. One of these days when we think we can't take IT ANYMORE, ONE OF THESE DAYS, WHEN WE THINK IT'S JUST GOING TO BE another day, the Holy Spirit's GOING TO SAY, "LOOK AT THERE." AND HE'LL BE STANDING THERE.
>> [applause] >> HE'LL BE STANDING THERE WAITING, WATCHING, and EXPECTING US. GLORY BE TO GOD. HE'S GOING TO STEP OUT ON THE CLOUDS AWAY FROM THE FATHER'S HOUSE FOR A LITTLE WHILE. HE'LL BE MEDITATING ABOUT THIS BEAUTIFUL BRIDE THAT THE FATHER HAS ALLOWED THE HOLY SPIRIT TO PUT TOGETHER FOR HIM. WE WILL SMELL LIKE CAMELS. WE WILL LOOK LIKE DIRT. WE WILL BE IN clothes THAT ARE JUST ABOUT WORN OUT. OUR FEET ARE TIRED. OUR TONGUES ARE THIRSTY AND THICK, BUT WE WILL LOOK UP ONE DAY AND SAY, "WHO IS THAT?" AND THE HOLY GHOST WILL SAY, "THAT'S THE ONE I PICKED YOU OUT FOR. THAT'S THE ONE YOU SAID YOU WANTED TO SEE."
>> [applause] >> AND Jesus will welcome us. And notice what it says here. She became his wife. And he loved her. Folks, you have no idea, neither do I, what a joy-filled day is on the way. When we see Jesus face to Notice she put on a veil. She put a veil and ran to him. She lighted off the camel and ran to him. And they embraced. One of these days, God is going to present His Son, Jesus Himself, according to Ephesians 5, is going to present to Himself a chaste and virtuous bride without spot, without wrinkle, without blemish. He will have his bride and he will say to his bride, "Come. We will join the Lord in the tent of matrimony." And he will love us forever. Can anybody do anything?
>> [applause] >> "Come, Lord Jesus. Come. Take your bride away." Christ loved the church and gave himself for it. You might think, "Well, he knows who we are." You know, there are some things that Jesus in his sovereignty and the Father in his glory decided for Jesus not to know. And that one of those is when the Father's going to signal for the trumpet to be sounded. Jesus said, "No man knows the day of the hour, not the angels, only the Father." So, no wonder Jesus sometimes, I believe, walks out and meditates. Jesus wants to see you more than you want to see him. Jesus is just as excited about seeing your face as you are to see his face. And I think sometimes in my mind, my imagination, Jesus is just meditating, "Father, when will it be? Father, how much longer will it be?" But there will be a day when the Father will look at Gabriel and say, "It's time." And the trumpet will sound. Hallelujah! And we will light off our camels. And we will run to meet him. And he lovingly will take us into his arms and love us. We will never be away from Jesus. There will never be a time when you are not in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.
So, what you might say is that what we're doing this morning is a shadow of what's coming. You have bread. You have juice. It's not literal bread and it's not literal juice. Or I should say, it's not the literal blood of Jesus. Not the literal body of Jesus. It's a representation. [snorts] And every time we come together and we see this bread and this little cup and we decide to drink it together, we are saying, "I believe that the one I chose to follow has his eye on me, has a plan for my life, and is waiting for the next signal from heaven." Anybody want to go to heaven this morning? That's not a trite question. Thank you, Tony. I mean it. Do you want to go to I don't mean, you know, someday, you know, when I get old and die, I hope I go to heaven. You know, when the kids get gone or maybe before they are gone, I'd sure like to go to heaven.
>> [clears throat] >> That's not what I'm asking. Is there a longing? See, we are listening. The listening makes us long for him. The longing makes us look for him. One time, years and years ago, I was invited to speak in a foreign country. I'm not going to say where cuz you might be from there. I think it was a bad decision to start with. I think I missed God. From the moment I got to the airport here, it was a disaster. The flight was a disaster. The airport I flew into was a disaster. Huh. The trip to my accommodations, horrible. The accommodations, oh my lord. I walked in and said, "I can't stay here." But I was there for 3 days. The meeting, you know, I preached, but it was just didn't happen. And I said, "I want to get out of here so bad." You'd think a preacher would be so excited, wouldn't you? I was excited about leaving. And so, the last night I preached, I went back to my accommodations. And I stayed up half the night saying, "Dear God, let me get out of this place." I finally got someone to take me to the airport. I get to the airport. I've waited an hour and a half, and they say, "We're sorry to tell you that the plane has a maintenance problem, and there won't be a flight out OF HERE TODAY." ANYBODY EVER BEEN THERE? I almost cried. I called Sandra, and I told her that, and she said, "Oh, well, we'll pray." Pray, come get me.
>> [laughter] >> That's how I FELT. SEND SOMEBODY to get me. I know if somebody at Central got a plane, they can come and get me. So, hours passed, and it was a terrible airport. And then I heard on the speaker, "We're happy to report to you that we have found another plane that will be here in 3 hours. And that [clears throat] plane will take the place of the one that's broken, and you can go home." I'll never forget. I went to that window, and they I knew it was coming from that direction. I can't tell you how many times I squinted. Every dot I saw in the sky, like, God, let it that be that plane. Please, dear God, dear But it wasn't. So, you walk back, and you get another pack of crackers, and another Coke. You walk back and look. And then they said, "Your plane should be arriving shortly." And I stood there, and I saw a black dot in the sky, and I went, "Yeah." Yeah. And that was the plane. And as silly a story as that is, I have prayed, "Lord, let me live my life every day looking for my redemption. Let me be that excited every day about who's coming. Don't let me get caught up in this airport called the world. Don't let me be held down and tethered to this world. Let me with great ANTICIPATION AND JOY LOOK UP AND LIFT UP MY HEAD. LIFT UP MY EYES BECAUSE THIS COULD BE THE DAY WHEN MY ISAAC APPEARS IN THE CLOUDS AND WELCOMES ME HOME. DOES ANYBODY WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN?
FATHER, I thank you now for what this represents. For us on earth in this wilderness to be able to take such a small thing as this square of bread [music] and hold it up and say this represents my life. This represents his life inside of me. And then to hold up this little cup and say, "I would not have this hope had it not been for the shed blood of Jesus Christ." Thank you for shedding it, Lord. You gave your body. You gave your blood. Thank you, Father, for giving your Isaac. Thank you, Isaac, for willingly lying on the altar. Thank you for Moriah. And thank you that we get to go home and live with you. Jesus said, "Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup you remember, you preach the Lord's death till he [music] comes." Come, Lord Jesus. Come. Thank you, Jesus. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all [music] unrighteousness. Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, neither has it even entered into the heart of a man the things that God has prepared [music] for them that love him. But God has revealed [clears throat] them under us by His Spirit.
Folks, the whole world's not looking [music] for Jesus to come. Today, most people in this country are gambling. They're getting ready for an orgy, a sports orgy. They're getting ready for call girls and guys. They are getting ready to either win or lose a fortune. They're going to party as though life will go on forever. I can't do anything about that. All I can tell you is we may not be here [music] when the Super Bowl comes on tonight. I pray to God that Jesus will come and take His bride away. And I mean what I'm saying.
