Isn't it frustrating when what you see in scripture doesn't seem to align with what you're actually experiencing in everyday life? Do you feel like you're missing something? If we all have the Holy Spirit, then why does it seem like some Christians thrive while other Christians just seem to always struggle?
The key, the major difference is being filled with the Holy Spirit. And being filled with the Holy Spirit is actually quite easy. Once you learn this truth, you'll go from striving to thriving. It's time to be filled with the Holy Spirit and with power. If you're ready for that, type I'm ready in the comment section right now.
First, I want to show you from scripture the differences between the influence of the Holy Spirit and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Whenever this question of being filled with the Holy Spirit arises, many believers are confused because they say, "Well, I thought I was filled with the Holy Spirit at salvation." Why then does it seem like I have to receive this second experience?
Well, let's make this clear. You did receive the Holy Spirit at salvation. There's not necessarily a second experience. Rather, there's a continual influence that takes place in your life that originates from that original infilling. So the infilling of the Holy Spirit is when the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in you. But often when you see those commands in scripture or when you see the descriptions in scripture of being filled with the Holy Spirit, it's not necessarily talking about the initial infilling of the Holy Spirit where the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in you, but it's talking about that continual influence of his work.
In Acts chapter 13:9-11, we read, "So Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he looked the sorcerer in the eye. Then he said, "You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud and enemy of all that is good. Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord? Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight for some time." Instantly mist and darkness came over the man's eyes and he began groping around begging for someone to take his hand and lead him."
So here we see that Paul the apostle in verse 9 was filled with the Holy Spirit. Look at that again. That's Acts 13:9. So Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit. And of course, the context here is that Paul was confronting this evil person and he was demonstrating the power of the Holy Spirit against this evil person. Now, wait a minute. I thought Paul had already been filled with the Holy Spirit. Didn't we read in Acts chapter 9:17? So, Ananias went and found Saul. He laid his hands on him and said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you might regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."
So, what's going on here? Well, it's not that Paul was suddenly once again receiving the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Rather, this phrase "was filled with the Holy Spirit" is describing a sudden access to power. I'll give you an example. Let's say you have a bank balance. That bank balance is sitting in your account under your name. That's your resources. But sometimes you may lose your debit card. That debit card is your access to what is already yours. What is that debit card in the life of everyday believers? That debit card, that access to power is surrender.
Ephesians 5:18 says, "Don't be drunk with wine because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit." This term "be filled" is a present passive imperative in the Greek meaning it's describing an ongoing influence of the Holy Spirit. You see you're crying out, "Holy Spirit, where is your power?" and the Holy Spirit is whispering, "Where is your trust?" All the power is available to you. So when I talk about being filled with the Holy Spirit, I'm talking about obeying the Holy Spirit, surrendering to the Holy Spirit. For the scripture says Galatians 5:16, "So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives."
Now, at the end of this message, I want to lead you in a prayer of surrender. But let's take a look at the ways that we surrender to the Holy Spirit. How are you to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Well, it's simple obedience.
So, you surrender your feet. You surrender your feet. That is where you go. In Psalm 1:1, we read this: "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers." Proverbs 4:14-15 says this: "Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it. Do not travel on it. Turn from it and go your own way." Galatians 5:16 again, this time in the NIV, it says, "So I say, walk by the spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."
So when I talk about surrendering your feet, that is where you're going, I'm talking about the places you allow yourself to visit. Is where you're going a good testimony? Is it a good demonstration of your character? Now I understand that as we read of the life of Jesus, we see that Jesus would often go to the places that people considered unclean. But the difference was that when Jesus went to these places, he was bringing with him divine influence. He was going for the purpose of ministry and outreach, not for the purpose of enjoying what was presented there and available to everyone.
Are you walking that line of temptation? Think about the fact that if you're struggling with alcoholism, you probably shouldn't visit the bar. If you're struggling with a drug addiction, you probably shouldn't go to those houses where you know you can get what you need or what you desire, I should say. You know, you don't need those drugs. Or maybe you're in a relationship and you're trying to keep it pure. You're dating someone and you want to make sure that you're not entering into sexual sin. Well, it's probably not a good idea to go to that place where you're isolated. It's probably not a good idea to go and visit each other in your homes alone late at night in those circumstances. But many believers walk that line of temptation. They say, "Well, I didn't cross it completely. I just want to step right up to that line." But if you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, then you're going to have to surrender your walk.
Many of us rush past God's timing. God is saying, "Slow down. That's not for now." Or, "Wait just until the next season." Or, "Wait until my next instruction." Yet, we rush ahead. Others stubbornly plant their feet into the ground. God says go, they say no. God says now, they say later. Instead of allowing the Holy Spirit to guide their walk, instead of surrendering their feet to the Lord and allowing him to take them where he wants them to go, they either stubbornly plant themselves in the ground or rush ahead of him.
So, you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit. That is, you want to have that influence. Again, I'm not talking about the initial infilling. The initial infilling, you receive that at salvation, but that influence, that ongoing filling of the Holy Spirit, that comes through surrender. So, you surrender your feet.
Next, you surrender your hands. That is, you surrender your actions to the Lord. What are you doing with the Holy Spirit's hands? Well, think about that. The Holy Spirit has filled your temple. Those hands should be used as vessels of honor and holiness and obedience. James 4:8 says this: "Come close to God and he will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world."
What are you doing with those hands? Are you committing acts of sin? Are you doing things you know you shouldn't do? Are you touching things, handling things that you should not be handling? Are you using your hands for dishonest gain and robbery? Are you using your hands to fulfill certain lust? Are you using your hands to do things that are not honoring to the Lord? These hands that the Lord has given to you should be holy hands. Should be clean hands. They should be hands that are used for the Holy Spirit's power. They should be hands that are used to lay them upon the sick and watch them recover. They should be hands that bring healing, not hands that bring forth sin.
With your hands, you can give generously or you can withhold out of greed. You know that greed, selfishness holds resources, holds finances, holds what it ought to give. But generosity, which is the very nature of God, freely gives what is in your hands. Some of you have stingy hands. And you're saying, "Holy Spirit, use my hands for healing." And you're not even using those hands for giving. You're saying, "Holy Spirit, use my hands to bring freedom and deliverance." Well, you're not even using those hands for the practical means of giving and resourcing. And so, we as believers ought to reflect the nature of our heavenly Father. The Lord freely gives. The Lord releases.
Have you surrendered your hands to the Holy Spirit in the area of your generosity? Or out of fear, do you withhold? Do you tell yourself things like, "Well, one day I'll be a giver, but not right now because my circumstances don't allow me." You know, many believers are saying, "I'm going to wait for the Lord to increase me and then I'll release with my hands gifts of generosity." But while you're saying, "Lord, increase me and I'll give," God is saying, "Give and I'll increase you." You see, it's faith that's required. You got to take that first step. Many believers use the excuse of saying, "Well, God understands my situation or he'll use someone else or he understands that the certain situation that I find myself in right now just doesn't work for giving." No, you as the believer have a obligation, a responsibility to be a giver to the church, to your fellow believer. Don't use your hands as greedy hands. Those hands, as I said, can hurt or heal. They can work or they can be lazy. God blesses diligent hands. He blesses the work of your hands. Well, how is he supposed to bless the work of your hands if your hands aren't working? Some hands are diligent hands. Other hands are lazy hands.
If you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, if you want that influence, then one of the things you're going to need to surrender is your action, what are you doing? How are you allowing the Holy Spirit to move in your life? How are you cooperating with the work of his power? So, first of all, we see you surrender your feet. That is where you go. You surrender your hands. That is your actions.
Next, you surrender your mouth. That is what you say. In Ephesians chapter 4 verse number 29 we read this: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs that it may benefit those who listen."
So the way you use your mouth can either be for honor or dishonor. Many believers instead of building up others they slander them. They gossip about them. You know, everyone you will ever meet has their flaws. Everyone you know, from your family members to your friends, everyone has a character issue. Everyone has something about them that you can point at and faultfind and accuse. Everyone has an issue that can cause you to complain about them behind their back. But true believers who are filled with the Holy Spirit don't do that. We don't participate in immature gossip. We don't participate in slander. We don't speak evil of others behind their back. We don't tear down other people's reputation just because it's fun for us to do. No. What do we do as believers? We as believers honor each other. We as believers speak well of one another.
So here's my challenge to you on that one specific point. I want you to talk good about behind someone's back today. Talk good behind someone's back. Don't slander them. Don't gossip about them. Don't tear down their reputation. Don't highlight their flaws. Don't focus on their character issues. Don't campaign against them in the background. Instead, speak well of them. Speak life into them. That's someone created in the image of God. That's someone who God loves. That's someone who God has called. and you need to make sure you're speaking with honor and not gossip and slander.
Another way that we can surrender our mouths is to deal in honesty. Many believers think it's okay to tell these little lies. Why do believers lie sometimes? Oh, believers lie many times because they want to avoid confrontation. They make up just a little white lie because they didn't want to deal with a conversation. They didn't want to deal with confrontation. They didn't want to deal with potentially upsetting someone or potentially having someone upset at them. So what do they do? They deal in these little white lies thinking they're avoiding controversy when all the while the Holy Spirit sees everything. He knows when you tell those little lies just because you wanted to avoid a simple conflict. He knows when you tell those little lies just because you didn't want to be called on something. He knows when you tell those little lies just because you're afraid of how the other person might react to you. That is not honorable. That's not character. That's not surrender to the Holy Spirit. No exaggerations, no understatements, no deceptions, pure honesty. That's how we ought to deal.
We also surrender our mouths by praising God instead of complaining. Many of us are so filled with complaint that we have no room to praise. Everything is so negative. When something positive happens, it's never about how positive it is. Instead, we automatically switch to, "Well, it can't possibly last that long." Or when something is developing in our lives. Maybe maybe you're entering into a season of marriage, maybe you're about to have a child, maybe you're entering into a new job, maybe a new season of ministry, maybe there's a new goal that you have. Well, are you speaking negatively about that? Are you constantly tearing that down? Are you constantly waking up and thinking, "Well, this didn't go right today," or, "That didn't go according to plan, or that didn't happen in the timing that I wanted it, or yeah, I was blessed with that, but I was missing out on this, or yeah, I did end up having that great experience, but here were some of the little flaws with that great that that great experience." And if you live like that, then you've not surrendered your mouth to the Lord. So, we need to learn to to not complain, but instead to praise.
Also, you can encourage or discourage. Do you tear people down by the way you talk? You constantly pointing out the negativity about them? Are you constantly pointing out their character issues? Are you constantly tearing them down in the things that they want to do, "You'll never reach that goal"? Or maybe someone else has it in them, but you don't? Or maybe God will use someone else, but not you. Are you laughing at people who are stepping out and trying to do something for the Lord? That's not a surrendered mouth. That's not a spirit-filled way of speaking. So you as a believer need to speak encouragement, not discouragement. And so you surrender your mouth to what you say.
Next, you surrender your eyes and your ears. And this is this is key because this is what you hear and see. Now, I put eyes and ears together because really that's the that's the influence that we we have when it comes to these two. And it ultimately comes down to what you're receiving into the mind. Some people call the eyes and the ears the gates of the mind. And so that is what I see, that image that I capture affects the way I think. What I hear can ultimately affect the way I think. So your ears typically work the same as your eyes in that they are inputs for images and sounds. Um, so images obviously coming from the eyes, sounds coming from the ears.
Psalm 101:3, "I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do. I will have no part in it." Now, the devil uses these imprints. You have to listen to this. Listen to me. The devil uses these imprints. So, if you're someone who's looking at pornography with your eyes, what's happening now is those images are being stored in the mind. If you as a child or you recently even because not just children experienced this, maybe you experienced trauma, you saw something horrific, something very violent, you saw something that you wish you never saw, you experienced something that you wish you never experienced, something happened to you that crushed your spirit. And now inwardly there's this trauma. And by the way, when I talk about trauma, I'm not just talking about abuse because disappointment can be traumatic. Loss can be traumatic. A change of plans in certain instances can be traumatic. Now, I'm not saying that we should walk around ready to crack under any slight pressure, but I am acknowledging that there are legitimate traumas that people face and that affects you. Why? Because of what you saw and what you heard that becomes a memory now. And the enemy can cause that memory to affect you in your now.
Some of us develop fear because of the things that we've seen or that we've heard. Some of you are listening to propaganda of the world. And it shows. You're listening to what they're saying about the economy. You're listening to what they're saying about World War II. You're listening to what they're saying about the political landscape. You're listening to what they're saying about disease. You're listening to what they're saying about famine. You're listening to what they're saying about the climate. And you're just taking in these messages. This propaganda machine is pumping out fear and darkness and discouragement and cynicism and doubt and you're just receiving it in the mind. Tell me what I don't want to hear. And it becomes like an addiction. And many believers are becoming addicted to fear-mongering. They're becoming addicted to conspiracy theories. They're becoming addicted to drama. Why? Because of what they're allowing themselves to hear.
Well, this obviously affects you because now the enemy can go in and reach into that memory. He can recall those thoughts for you. He can remind you of what you saw. He can remind you of what you heard. This is why you have to be careful about the things that you watch and listen to. Not just TVs and movie, TV shows and movies and such, but also songs and conversations. How are those affecting you? You have to be careful of what you see and hear. And so to be surrendered to the Holy Spirit, you have to look with the eyes of the Holy Spirit. You have to look through your spiritual eyes. "Let he who has eyes see, let he who has ears hear what the spirit is saying." You have to look through the eyes of the spirit. You have to look and see people and things and situations the way that the Holy Spirit sees them. You have to hear the voice of God guiding you in everyday life.
Surrender your eyes and begin to look at situations and people. I'm going to emphasize that. And people the way that God looks at them. And surrender your spiritual ears. That is begin to hear what God is saying for you in the now.
Now, we're going to talk about the next level of surrender in just a moment. That is going deeper. All of these things I mentioned so far, you know, you have your feet, your hands, your mouth, your eyes, and ears. These are somewhat exterior. But now I'm going into the internal. That is those deeper areas of surrender in your heart that you need to begin to yield to the precious Holy Spirit.
You need to surrender your will. This is so key. But before I go too deep into that, I want you to make sure you've left a like on this video if you're enjoying it. So, in Luke 22:42, we see that the Lord Jesus is coming to a crossroads. No pun intended. He's there just about to face the most painful moment of his life on earth. He's facing the weight of the sins of humanity, past, present, and future. He's facing the darkness of those deeds, the shame, the guilt, the heaviness. He's about to bear it all upon a cross. Motivated by love, motivated by devotion to the Father's glory. He's facing the cross, about to lay up his life. Not only would he experience anguish of the soul, not only would he experience anguish of the mind, but he was also going to experience physical pain. The tearing of his flesh, the nailing of his hands and feet, the wearing of a crown, the sting of the whip. He's facing what he knows is going to be painful. This is where real surrender begins. It's easy to surrender when you're stepping into something that you desire. It's easy to surrender when you're stepping into a blessing. It's easy to surrender when you're stepping into something that you've been praying for. Oh, but when the Lord is calling you to step into something that is painful, to step into something that you don't want to face, that's now where we begin to see the clashing of the wills.
Why don't we hear preaching like this anymore? Whatever happened to the talk of the surrendered life? Whatever happened to the crucified life, sermons on this? We as believers need to recognize that being filled with the Holy Spirit, being under the influence of that Holy Spirit means that sometimes we will face things we don't want to face. And that is where true submission begins. Luke 22:42 says, saying, "Father," this is what Jesus says in that moment, "if thou be willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done."
You want to surrender your will. Stop being so stubborn. Listen, there are things about you that the Lord wants to change and you're not letting him. There are things about you that the Lord wants to work on and you're resisting. We need to find divine life through self-denial. You want power, you need to yield. You want to see miracles, you want to see demonstrations of the Holy Spirit in your life, oh, you're going to have to die to self. That's the key. You've got to die to self. Again, I'm not talking about being filled with the Holy Spirit and as in having the Holy Spirit. I'm saying that as you die to self, now the Holy Spirit has you to where you are yielding to him. The will, yielding to him, those dark areas of your life. Those areas you never wanted to submit, he wants those, too. Give those to him. Do not hesitate.
Next, we surrender our emotions. That is what you feel. In Philippians chapter 4:6-7, we read this: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
So here first we surrender our anxiety to him. Many of us yield to our fear. We give in to our anxieties and we allow that anxiety to rule us and to dictate to us what we will do and what we won't do. I remember when I was struggling with severe anxiety. My anxiety would dictate to me when I could go to dinner, when I could go for a drive, when I could head over to church, because I was always afraid of having a panic attack at the least inconvenient times. Not that there's actually a convenient time to have a panic attack, but that fear drove me. There were times when I decided, and this was a season of my life, where even just hanging with friends, I would never leave a mile radius from my home. It was all right there. The restaurant down the street from the house, the coffee spot down the street from the house. Maybe we can go for a little bit of a walk, but not any further than just down the street from the house. And I lived that way for quite some time because fear had so gripped my heart. And that's where grip really fear backed me into a corner.
One of the things I tell my daughter Arya all the time, I say is once you give something to fear, it's going to want more until it takes everything. So she knows that. She tells me all the time. She says, "Dad, fear wants to take everything, doesn't it?" And I say, "Yes, it does." Because uh she wanted to go swimming last uh during the summer, but there was a frog that had found its way into our pool. And so she was afraid of the frog. And because she was afraid of the frog, she didn't go back inside the pool for several days. And I had to sit with her and say, "Arya, don't let the frog take the pool from you. You cannot be afraid of the frog." And eventually, she worked her way back into the pool. And today, she'll tell me, "Daddy, I'm not afraid of the frog." In fact, we would pray at night. And as I would pray over her and I would say, 'Lord Jesus, help her to not be afraid of the frog.' And just the other night as I was praying the very same, she grabs my hand. She goes, "Dad," she looks at me, she goes, "I'm not afraid of the frog anymore." And she put my hand back on her head. And so I continued to pray. I said, "Lord, okay, thank you that she's no longer afraid of the frog."
What is that frog in your life? That that that thing that hinders you from stepping into what you want because the Holy Spirit may call you to do something. The Holy Spirit may say go, but standing in between you and your destiny, standing in between you and surrender to the Holy Spirit is that which you fear. So you've got to surrender that anxiety.
James 3:16 says, "For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind." You've got to surrender those feelings of envy. Maybe you're not blessing others. Maybe you're not serving as you should. Maybe you're not completely content simply because you're so filled with envy that there's no room for gratitude. Surrender that envy to the Holy Spirit.
Maybe you're filled with bitterness. Oh, and this is going to be a big one. And I know of all the things I say, this one will probably get the most response. Ephesians 4:31, "get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior." Get rid of bitterness. So, I'm going to tell you something, and I know it's going to offend many. That's not why I'm saying it. I'm saying it because I love you and because I want you to know the truth. Whatever happened to you, whoever did what does not change the scripture. I'm going to say this to you now as a bold statement of truth. This is true no matter how you feel. This is true whether you like it or not. There is no excuse for unforgiveness. Period. None. Oh, brother David, you don't know what you're talking about. You don't know what they did to me. How can you say that to me without knowing my story or how dare you? You don't know how wicked they are. You don't know how what they did affected me. I understand. I'm not saying you can't be hurt. I'm not saying you can't feel pain. I'm not saying that you can't set boundaries. I'm saying there's no excuse for unforgiveness.
You want to talk about real surrender to the Holy Spirit. You want to really be filled, that is really live under the influence of the Holy Spirit's power, get rid of bitterness. Many of you are holding on to that that that unforgiveness deep within your heart, that bitterness, and and you're saying, "I'm not going to release this." And you've justified it in your own mind. and you've surrounded yourself with so-called friends who give you bad advice, who pat you on the back and tell you that you're justified in holding on to that unforgiveness and and so feeling justified, having that confirmation bias, being told what you want to hear, that you're the victim, that of course you shouldn't forgive. Again, set boundaries, yes, get out of bad situations, yes, but you have to let go of that unforgiveness. There's no excuse for it. Why? Because we are to forgive even as God has forgiven us. And whatever sin that's been committed against you, it's nothing compared to the sin that you committed against God. And if he was willing to forgive, we ought to be willing to forgive.
So you surrender your emotions, what you feel, no excuses. Get rid of anxiety. Get rid of envy. Get rid of bitterness. Get rid of anger. Ephesians 4:26. "And don't let and don't sin by letting anger control you. Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry." Don't let it happen. These are the emotions that we allow in our lives that ultimately bring destruction. So faith not feelings.
Finally, you surrender your mind. That is the way you think. Philippians 4:8 says this: "And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right and pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."
Now, a moment ago, I was talking about eyes and ears and how they work the same in that they're they're sensory inputs that bring forth information. So, I want to touch on that a little bit more because what you see, what you hear, what you experience, even what you do affects sometimes the way that you think. But ultimately, the way you think will affect the way you behave. And so if you choose to fix your mind on what the scripture says to fix your mind on, that will change the direction of your life.
Now, something interesting about Philippians 4:8 is this, that the command implies that you already have the ability to control your thoughts. I know it doesn't feel like that all the time. Sometimes it feels like your thoughts just choose you, like they just flying through your mind. That's not the way it is. You actually have complete control over what you think. And again, those who struggle with things like um impulsive behavior or compulsive thoughts um or or or what are they called? Um intrusive thoughts. Those types of thinking patterns. I understand they take a while to break and they can create the illusion that you're not in control of your thoughts. But it's only an illusion. How do I know that? Because the scripture tells you to control what you think. And if the scripture commands you to do something, it means you can do it. Again, we are without excuse before the scripture.
You want to talk about surrender? Sometimes you have to surrender your excuses before you surrender the area that's hiding behind those excuses. And the excuse that we use often when it comes to our thoughts is, "Oh, I have OCD." Or, "Oh, I'm compulsive." Or, "Oh, I have intrusive thoughts." Look, I understand those are very real things that many people deal with. But ultimately, the scripture says one thing, and that is that you should choose what your thoughts are. Fix your thoughts. You do that on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable. All of these things are the focal points of our thinking and those create our thought patterns.
So we as believers have a responsibility to allow the Holy Spirit to change the way that we think. And your thinking affects everything about you. You can't have the mind of the spirit if you're living in the mind of the flesh. And so as you surrender those areas of your mind that changes the way you think. Those thought patterns become behavior patterns and ultimately that changes the trajectory of your life. So you surrender all of these areas. So you have to choose between faith or doubt. How will you think? Hope or cynicism. How will you think? Truth or deception? How will you think? Surrender all.
You surrender your feet where you go, your hands, those are your actions. Surrender your mouth, what you say, your eyes and ears. Surrender your will, what you desire. Surrender your emotions, what you feel. Surrender your mind, the way you think.
I want to lead you now in a prayer of surrender. And as we pray this, I want you to repeat after me. I want you even now to prepare your heart, prepare your mind, and just begin to think on those things that the Lord wants you to think on.
