This question has started real arguments between scientists, mathematicians, and the internet. How many holes does a straw have?

Your brain instantly says two. One on each end. Easy. Done.

But the moment you say it out loud, something feels off. Because when you blow air through a straw, it doesn't split. It doesn't choose a left hole or a right hole. It travels through one continuous empty space. So maybe it has one hole.

Now zoom out. Forget straws. Think geometry. In topology, a straw is just a donut stretched until it's long. And a donut famously has one hole. So where did two come from? From mixing definitions. Openings versus tunnels versus topological holes. You counted entrances. Topology counts continuity.

So the real answer is uncomfortable but precise. Two openings, one tunnel, one hole. And the reason this question grabs attention isn't the straw.
