Before we lift our voices in prayer, let's dwell on the promises of God.
In this life, there is one thing that is clear, and that is life can be very hard. In an instant, it can change from calm to catastrophic. Life is hard. School is hard. Family life is hard. Living alone is hard. Change is hard. And the list goes on. There are unexpected twists and turns. Jesus doesn't sugarcoat what we can expect in this life. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows, but take heart because I have overcome the world. John 16:33.
There are trials that are packed with a forceful punch. Jesus says we will have no one, not two, not three, but many trials and sorrows. It's something we can't run away from—that in this life there will be trouble and challenges that will come against us, and we need help. We need protection. We need power. We need the Lord. And the amazing news for us is that he promises us that he will protect us. He will watch over us. He will keep us safe when the enemy comes against us. He encourages us to take heart. In whatever trouble you are going through, take heart. If your heart is filled with fear, take heart. When you feel hopeless, take heart. Psalm 91 gives us so much encouragement and truth when we are facing trouble. We are given assurance of God's presence in our lives, of his desire to help us.
One of the most comforting things we can know as Christians is that God protects us. Those who live in the shelter of the most high will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety. He is my God, and I trust him. He will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Psalm 91: verses 1 to 4. Those are amazing truths that we can latch on to when we feel secure and alone.
Whatever trouble you are going through must be put into his hands. Make sure that you run to him when things get intense. Don't try to do it alone, or don't depend on anything else the world offers as protection. That's what the enemy will try to trick you on. He will try to get you to hang your hopes on everything else but God for protection or to have a backup plan in case God doesn't come through. That's what he warned his people about through the prophet Isaiah. What sorrow awaits those who look to Egypt for help, trusting their horses, chariots, and charioteers, and depending on the strength of human armies instead of looking to the Lord, the Holy One of Israel? Isaiah 31:1. The Israelites at one point were considering getting help and protection from the Egyptians. Isaiah confronted Judah with two sins: the sin of trusting in Egypt and their military might, and the sin of not looking to the Holy One of Israel. Judah felt they had a reason to trust in chariots because they were many. Judah felt they had a reason to trust in horsemen because they were very strong. But they couldn't seem to find a reason to trust in the Lord. No matter what reasons they had were wrong because God was stronger and greater than any army in the world or than all the armies in the world combined. And God made it clear to them who he was compared to the Egyptians they were considering to trust. For these Egyptians are mere humans, not God. Their horses are puny flesh, not mighty spirits. When the Lord raises his fist against them, those who help will stumble, and those being helped will fall. They will all fall down and be wounded together. Isaiah 31:3.
Nothing else can protect us the way the Lord will. Everything else will fail us eventually, but God will not let us down. So bring to him whatever you are facing and fighting right now. Bring it to him. Put the fear you have into his hands and know that as you trust him to protect you, there is a peace you will receive.
Sometimes we get scared and worry about everything. We allow the devil to have his way with us and to intimidate us. But when we come to Christ and cry out to him for protection, for help, he listens to us. You will trample upon lions and cobras. You will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet. The Lord says, "I will rescue those who love me; I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble; I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation." Psalm 91:13-16. God is good and he's mighty to save and protect. There's no better insurance, no better guardian than God. When we trust him with our lives, we have nothing to fear.
One thing that I want to stress is that God is sovereign and is always in control. We have limitations that include time, physical, finances, etc. But God doesn't share those limitations. He is not limited by anything. If God had limitations, he wouldn't be God. You could use a little "g" to write his name. But God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. He knows everything, and he's in control of everything. Anything that happens is because God permits it. So even if things don't go your way, we have to remember that he is still in control. We don't have to be afraid of anything that the enemy can do because God has promised to protect us. Nothing the enemy sends our way will destroy us and harm us. So let us thank God for how he watches over us.
Now let's pray.
Gracious and sovereign Lord, as the first light of this day breaks through the darkness, I come before you with a heart open and longing for your presence. I quiet my soul before you. I slow my thoughts, my breath, and my spirit to focus fully on you, the one who formed me, who sustains me, and who calls me by name. This day is yours, and so am I. I thank you, Lord, for the breath in my lungs, the beating of my heart, the stillness of this morning hour, and the promise that comes with a new beginning. You are the author of all things good. Even in a world filled with uncertainty and pain, I can still call you faithful because you have never abandoned me. You have never turned away from my cries. You have never failed to lead me back when I've wandered. You remain the steady hand guiding me when my own strength falls short. Lord, you know the weight that some mornings bring. You know the fears that rise before my feet even touch the ground. You see the anxiety that tries to settle in as I think about what might go wrong today, what challenges I might face, and what battles I am still fighting both within and around me. But I choose today to give you those fears before they take root. I lay them down before you, one by one. My future, my family, my finances, my health, my relationships, my uncertainties—they all belong in your hands. Lord, I ask you to surround me this day. Wrap me in your presence like a warm and unbreakable shelter. Be my strong tower when the world presses in. Be my refuge when my heart grows weary. Be my hiding place when I feel vulnerable, exposed, or unsafe. Let your peace flow over me like a river, washing away every ounce of fear and replacing it with the calm assurance that I am deeply known and fiercely protected. Strengthen me to face what I must. Let no discouragement or disappointment steal my joy today. Help me not to be consumed by the chaos around me or the things I cannot control. Teach me to remain rooted in you, to hear your voice above all others, to obey your prompting even when it's hard, and to trust your timing even when it doesn't make sense. I surrender my schedule to you—every moment, every meeting, every interruption, every demand. Use them for your glory, Lord. Teach me to prioritize your presence over my productivity, your whisper over my worries. Help me not to move so quickly that I miss you walking beside me. Cover not only me but the people I love. Guard them as they go about their day. Shield them from harm, from sickness, from deception, from despair. I ask for divine protection over their minds, their hearts, their health, their purpose, and their peace. Where there is confusion, bring clarity. Where there is pain, bring healing. Where there is fear, bring courage. Where there is distance, bring reconciliation. God, remind me today that I am not powerless. You have given me everything I need to stand firm in faith, to walk boldly in love, and to resist the enemy's attempts to pull me away from your truth. Fill me with discernment. Let me see with spiritual eyes the attacks that come subtly through discouragement, through distraction, through false comfort, or easy compromise. Let me choose righteousness. Let me walk in humility and integrity. Help me to speak life with my words today—to encourage, to bless, to uplift, and to reflect your character in every interaction. Let me carry peace into every room I enter. Let people see something different in me, not because of who I am, but because of who lives in me. Let me be slow to anger, quick to listen, and full of grace. Let my heart beat with compassion. And let my hands be open to serve where you lead. Lord, in the moments when I feel like giving up today, breathe new strength into me. In the moments I feel forgotten, remind me that I am held in the palm of your hand. In the moments I feel overwhelmed, remind me that nothing is too hard for you. In the moments I feel broken, remind me that you are the healer. And when I feel like I have nothing left, remind me that you are enough. Even if I walk through hard things today, even if prayers seem unanswered or doors remain closed, I will still praise you. I will still trust you. I will still say you are good because my hope is not in what happens today. My hope is in who you are every day. Thank you for your mercy which meets me fresh each morning. Thank you for your faithfulness that stretches into every detail of my life. Thank you that even when I don't see it, you are working all things together for my good and your glory. I commit this day to you, Lord, and I commit myself to walk in step with your spirit. Let this day be marked by divine peace, by supernatural confidence, and by an awareness of your nearness in everything. I walk forward now, not in fear, but in faith, not in worry, but in worship, not in my own might, but in your everlasting strength. In the name of Jesus Christ, my savior and defender. Amen.
