Hello everyone, welcome back to another video! I missed you all so much last week. Hopefully, you enjoyed the video of Justin filling in and giving you a little bit of the behind-the-scenes of what it's like, a day in the life, especially a Monday day in the life here. If you didn't get a chance to watch that video, I will try to link it up here.
But for today, this is the long-awaited video that you guys have been wanting, which is the start-to-finish of a Whatnot auction. I have gotten this question and request more than any other request since I have started my YouTube channel back up. It has been, "Can you please show us from start to finish what it looks like when you are running one of your Whatnot auctions?" So, I'm going to do that today.
Tuesday is our first Whatnot show of the week, and so I'm going to basically just take you along in the day with me. I've already been sourcing and I went and grabbed some boxes, so I have all of my books pulled in here already. We're going to start going through those shortly, and then I have some inventory on the table from Saturday's show that I'm going to put away. I'm going to show you guys what that looks like, what it looks like when I'm taking photos of my picture, like shelves. Um, how I photograph my shelves. I'm going to show you how it looks like when I'm setting up my auctions, what types of listings I make.
One of the big questions is always things like, um, "How are you running these auctions? Like, how do you do it?" And I want to show you guys what I mean when I say I'm putting a listing in by weight. I think that is like the best way to describe it, but I want to like go into depth as to what that means, 'cause that is basically how I run my auctions. And just kind of give you the start-to-finish. So, that was a bit of a ramble intro, but I'm excited and I don't care. I have a whole notepad of notes. We're going to go through it. It's definitely going to be a longer video. We're going to try to go in it as depth as possible. I want to throw screen recordings in. I definitely want to try to give you as much detail as possible. So, if you are looking at the length of this video, which is, if I had to guess, probably like 45 minutes, but if you are looking at the length of the video and going, "This is a long one," just know I think it's going to be pretty chalk full of step-by-step instruction and information. So, I want to go through my list. I want to make sure I'm hitting every piece of what I do on a Tuesday, basically, right? I want to show you from start to finish how I would set up my auction, how I would run it, and what I do afterwards. So, um, let's go ahead and get into it.
I did divide up the like the notes. It is, I have a pre-show checklist, I have a showtime checklist, and then a post-show checklist. So, we're going to kind of go through those three different levels. All right, so I want to go ahead and let you know specifically what the main like steps or so are that we're going to be doing pre-show to get ready for this auction. I have them listed in the order that I tend to do them in. And the very first thing is organized inventory selection, which includes what we're about to get started on, which is organizing and putting away all the books left over from Saturday. Then we're going to start organizing the books here that we have for new inventory.
Second thing on the list is actually in the back end. This is going to be part of something we're going to do within the app, which is cloning all the items from our past show onto our next show. When you have something listed in a show, you don't have to make that listing every single time you do another show. You can actually do what's called a clone, and it will move all of the items from the past show, or whatever items you want to be moved from the last show, to any other future shows you have scheduled. Along with that, we're going to also clone over our show notes, and we're going to add some giveaways in. I tend to either do giveaways at that point or at the very end. It does not matter, but at some point, get giveaways entered in there.
Um, then the next main thing that we want to do is photograph our shelves. So, I'm going to show you what that looks like. I'm going to basically go around and update all the listings I have pre-loaded in my auction every single show and re-photograph those items. So, for example, I have my adult shelves, and I want to picture all the books that I have over there on the adult shelf, so that while I'm showing new inventory in my show, people can shop those shelves and make requests. Okay?
Um, and then the next and second to last thing that we're going to do is add a thumbnail and a preview video. So, we're going to take a photo of something that's going to show up as people are scrolling through the shows, and that's what they'll see. And then when they click on the show, we can upload a video that gives them more information on what they can expect. And then the last thing is making an Instagram post for your social media presence. You definitely want to try to utilize accessing all the people that are in your network and reminding them, like, "Hey, it's Tuesday, I do a show, this is what you can expect," and maybe they'll see something they want.
So, those are the main like six pre-show steps, and I'm just going to walk you through those to get started. So, let's go ahead and start by putting all the inventory left over from Saturday up onto the shelves. So, these are our leftovers from Saturday's show. We had a couple of stacks, and I'm just going to go ahead and basically start putting those on the shelves where they go. My shelves are quite organized, and I am going to probably do a video on like how I organize my shelves. Part of a good Whatnot show is having a general aesthetic. It doesn't mean you need to have shelves like this, but having one shelf where you organize the books in a way that's really relatable to a buyer and somebody who could easily shop them, it's nice. So, like, you know, I've got all my board books over here, I've got, this is young adult, this is adult cookbooks, things like that, right? So, it is pretty organized. So, let's go ahead and get all of this onto the shelves.
All of that inventory has now been put onto the shelves, and you can see I did do some stuff like I set that up. But what I like to do is before I take photographs, which I'm not there yet, but I like to do it when I'm putting away the new inventory is just make the shelves look pretty. Like, I want them to look full and pretty, and they look pretty good right now, actually. But I'm just going to go through and do like a couple of quick little touches. Here is the before. I'll see if you guys can see any difference, and here is your after. Again, it is not much of a difference, but it is subtle enough that it matters. And I switched some stuff out, moved some things around, and just made it look full. So, even when I, my shelves don't have a lot, like, for example, this shelf has three, four, five, six, it has nine books on it, but it looks nice and full. So, just try to, you know, work with what you have, make it look appealing, show some of the covers from time to time. I'll switch them out. After showing covers for a while, I might switch it and put a different cover out just to kind of remind people that there's still some really great books on these shelves.
Okay, so now that all that's done, we're going to go ahead and start going through the new inventory here that is down on the ground that we just sourced this morning. I'm going to try to explain to you why I'm picking certain books or not picking certain books and show you the pile afterwards. And yeah, so let's just start literally going through it. Okay, so we sit on the floor when we go through new inventory. It's just kind of the easiest way to do it because you have this whole area here to work with. So, here's the two bags, and what I'm going to do is start going through it, and I will just go ahead and show you my, not even my find of the day. This is why it's important to have friends at the places that you source because my bestest friend at the place that I source walked up to me as I was hand checking out and handed me this. She's like, "Did you want this?" And I was like, "Yeah, did you literally just find that in there?" She's like, "Yeah." Um, I'm pretty sure she had it in her cart, which is why I didn't see it because I did go through all the bins, and it does have like some wear on the spine, but okay. This is why we have friends. So, um, this will probably be a book that we do on Saturday. Maybe I'll make it a giveaway, like a buyer's giveaway on Saturday. I don't know. Um, but that's definitely not going to be in tonight's show.
All right, I decided to switch up the angle so you could see a little bit better of what I'm doing here on the ground. So, I'm going to start just going through the bags and the first thing I typically do is just get all the books out of the bags, and I'm going to just be making piles. So, for example, I've got chapter books, board books, little collections here, and picture-style books, just kind of going through, getting everything out of the bag. It's a board book.
One more bag here. We did have a really good haul today, honestly. It was a really solid selection of books. I do still think it wasn't anything like super crazy. The Fourth Wing was probably the best thing, and we didn't even find that ourselves. So, pretty cool. Then just kind of pulling it all out, and that's it. So, now I can see what we have to work with. We've got our receipts, and if you care, on all of this, this was $25.97 for all of these books here. Just push these to the side.
So, now what I'm going to go ahead and do is start picking what I want to have in the show. And to be honest, I'm going to have probably majority of this in the show. Um, I might thin out some of these board books here. Um, so we'll do a little Christmas one. I've been liking to put a couple of Christmas books here and there into the show, so we'll do a couple of these. This one is so cute. We'll save this. We'll do that one, and we'll save these. So, we'll just kind of put these over here to the side. And then I am going to do these little baby board books. These are cute. We'll put that tonight. All right, then let's look at chapter. So, we've got some vintagey stuff here. This is for eBay. I think we're going to do all of these chapter books. Actually, we're not going to do this one. We already have. So, this is part of an example, right? I already have this book on my shelf, so I'm going to pull this one to the side until that one gets sold. Same thing here, we have that book already. Okay, so that's our chapter, that's our board book we're going to do. And then we have these little extra books. These are fun for like crafting, so we'll put those in there too. All right, so same thing, I'm going to check to see if I have some of these books on my shelf. I don't have this, this one, so we'll put that one in our new inventory. Got some crafting books, little vintage bilingual, another book we don't have on the shelf yet, that one, that one. Lots of Dr. Seuss today.
Couple of these little vintagey books. Those will be fun to bring to the table. Kids book, boom, collection here, story book. Yeah, all of these are going to be really good to bring to tonight's show. This is, this is some good stuff here. This is definitely going to work out. Okay, perfect. So, here's how I have it organized now. So, so far, this is all going to be stuff we're going to have on the show. So, I'm going to pull this to the back here. I like to put the board books over on this side usually, and chapter books on this side. So, that's so far the bones of what we have, but we're going to need to get more to add to that. But that is our first initial pull. I think this is a good little variety of stuff so far. Um, and then what I'm usually going to do is take all the leftover, the stuff that I'm not going to take, and I'll kind of just put it over here. You can't see it, I don't think, in camera, but I have a stack right here. I'm going to go through and just see what else I want to grab from there. Um, this is actually going to be like something I'll use as a giveaway, so I'm just going to kind of put this up here. And then, um, I have a couple things up here for personal. We've got our board books, we'll stick those in our board book pile. And then again, the copy of Fourth Wing, that's going to be saved until the weekend. And then we have some leftover chapter. So, just kind of put all of that over here underneath the table. And now we've gone through our initial sort, and we just need to pick out a few more things to add to this new inventory selection.
So, I think I have enough board books for tonight's selection. So, I'm going to pass on all of these. Well, maybe I'll pull one more because I've got a lot right now. Let's do, that's not my, let's do, that's not my lion, maybe. And we can also do an Usborne. So, we'll do two more board books, and then I think that's plenty for board books. And let's just see what else is in here that we can pull out. Maybe one of these workbooks is good. A couple more story books would be good. Um, see, we already have those up there. I think we have enough leveled readers on the shelf right now. I'm not really trying to pull any more leveled readers out. Um, let's see. We have something like this on the shelf already. I think we have stuff pretty much like this all on the shelf already. So, I'm going to restack all of this, and this just will continue to be our stack of books that we will sell eventually. They just aren't ready to come out on the shelves just yet. If we can pull any more chapter books out from over here, we have quite a bit. Um, let's see. Let's pull out something nice, something fun and exciting. And then we have a lot of these books already on the shelf, unfortunately. I know that sounds crazy, but it's just the reality of it sometimes. I pick up books because they sell, and when I have a copy, it doesn't make sense to bring another copy out. But I have backup copies. It's just kind of, I don't know, I feel like most bookstores have something like that. So, like, see, I have two copies of Where the Crawdads Sing in here, three copies of Hunger Games. Like, it just, these are books that will always sell, and I keep them in stock. But I need to, I need to eventually put these next door in my inventory system, like all the shelves I have next door. That's really just what needs to happen. Be a better way to really know what I have so I'm not going through a bunch of books that I can't really sell.
So, if I'm being honest, that is going to actually be kind of it. We're going to just have a really small inventory selection tonight, and that's just going to have to be what it is. Um, I just don't really have any more chapter books. So, this is all we're going to have tonight. And I'm going to go ahead and organize this so it's a little bit more pretty, and I'll show you what that looks like here and how I do it. So, starting off with the chapter, it's going to be pretty simple. I do just like to put the larger books at the bottom and work our way up to the taller books. So, I'm just going to go ahead and do that real quick, just kind of show you kind of how we do it there. Nice little small books on the top. Perfect. So, then just pull all the titles to the front like so, and there is our chapter stack. And then we're going to basically do the same exact thing here. Pull everything out, and you just go through and kind of put it in the order that it is sizewise. All right, and there is our picture stack. And then last but not least, we have our board book stack here. Just pop this. We got next to it. We'll put this on top. Boom, there we go. So, now everything is so much prettier looking.
The next thing that I want to go ahead and do is take a picture of our new inventory and a little bit of our surroundings for our thumbnail photo, and then we also are going to take a little bit of a recording to put as a video preview, so that as people are scrolling through Whatnot, they'll be interested by seeing our thumbnail and then potentially clicking on our on our show, and then they'll see a video pop up. So, I want to show you guys kind of what that looks like. It's really quick, and I'm just going to show you in real time what that looks like doing that. So, I've got my camera app pulled up. I obviously want to have it a nice wide angle, so I have widened out the angle, and I'm basically going to just line myself up. And I actually don't like the way this looks. I want it to be even with my bookshelves. So, find something that looks kind of aesthetic to you, right? Like, I like that this now is kind of lined up with the middle of my shelves here. So, now I can kind of get in there, get a nice kind of frame. Boom. And that is what I have. And you can see here on my phone kind of what it looks like, nice tight frame. Whatnot always will crop into your photo, so some of this is going to get cropped out naturally.
So, let's go and do our preview video, and then I'll show you what it looks like putting those onto our Whatnot show. So, switch over to video again, keeping it nice and wide. What I like like to do is start my preview video with sort of the same image that my thumbnail is. So, since my thumbnail is this view, I kind of like to start my video with this as the view. And I'm just going to do a normal preview, and you guys can see exactly what it looks like. All right, so this is what I would say. Oh, I got to get music going. Sorry, hang on. Vital step here. We got to get some music going. I love to throw a little bit of music on in the background. I like to do music in my shows. I like to do music as a thumbnail or as the preview video. I just think it helps kind of set the mood. So, let's get our playlist going, and I'll just kind of pick a random song that's somewhat fun here.
All right, so now that we have our music going, let's go ahead and start our preview video. "Hello, hello everyone, welcome in and happy Tuesday to you all. We have our new inventory on the ground and all of our books on our shelves, as per usual. If you've never been here before, welcome in. My name is Amanda. I do a live auction on Whatnot every Tuesday and Saturday doing books for all ages. As you can see, I have shelves full of books. You can check out all those pictures of those shelves in the auction tab down there in the bottom right, kind of browse, see if anything's catching your eye, and you can make requests at any time. What we're going to be doing when the show gets started is going through this new inventory down here. I will also have up-close photos of that for you to see. It isn't a crazy amount of new inventory today. It is a lot of vintage stuff as well, and heavy on the board books, so it's a very, very odd selection, I'm not going to lie. But I still have tons of amazing books on the shelves. Most of my books are under $4, like the vast, vast majority are under $4, and I do a lot of bundling in my show. So, pop in, come hang out, grab a deal. I'll catch you guys at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and tonight we're probably only going to be on for about an hour. It's going to be a pretty quick show, but I will catch you guys then."
Music. Shoot, I just thought about it. Damn. Let me, let me listen back real quick. That sucks. I just did all of that. All right, so we just filmed our thumbnail and our preview video. Now it's time to go ahead and attach it to our show. So, I'm going to open up the Whatnot app and go to my upcoming show here, and I am going to click on the little dots in the corner that says "More," and that is going to bring up the option to edit my show, which is going to pull up these two images, the "Add Thumbnail" and "Add Preview Video" images. And we're going to just go ahead and click on those and go to our gallery and add in those images. So, first up, we have the new inventory with the bookshelves in the back there. That was the thumbnail that we took. I'm going to go ahead and crop that in, make it look nice and neat, and then click on video again, go to our gallery, and upload that last video that we had recorded. Go ahead and click schedule. It does take a few moments for that to schedule out, so you'll start seeing the video preview playing in the background, and it'll cut off once it uploads. So, don't exit out or anything, just let it finish loading. Sometimes if you load just the thumbnail first and then the video, it's a little faster, but it works nonetheless.
Okay, so now if we go out, we can go to our shows, and you can see we have our thumbnail there with, um, our image, and when you click on it, it will start playing the video preview in the background. So, pretty solid. Now, what we want to go ahead and do is add in all of our items from a past show that we want to clone over and make available in this show. So, if you see, I click the little store, nothing pops up. There's nothing in there. I don't have anything in the "Buy It Now," I don't have anything in the auction. So, what we're going to do is go over to our Chrome browser. You do need to do this in the desktop format, and you want to go to Whatnot. Let's toggle on over to the main Whatnot screen so you can see what it looks like. What I'm going to do is click these three little lines in the top right corner. So, I click those three little lines, you'll see it pulls up our list of options, and what we want to do is go down to "Shows." This is going to pull up all of our upcoming shows, and if we scroll down past all of our upcoming shows, you're going to eventually start seeing a list of our ended shows. So, right here you can see "Ended Shows," and if I click on the little plus sign, "View and clone items from this show." This is our last show, and I want to view and clone the items from it. Um, here is all the items that were listed in that show. Now, I can't click on anything until I select which show I want to clone it to. So, I'm going to pull the drop-down menu, and this one is labeled "Noow." Hopefully, earlier you saw I made a mistake and had to re-record this part of the video, but we're labeling it "Noow," we're putting it on the "Noow," which is our upcoming show tonight, Tuesday. Um, I'm just going to delete it, and so we have "Select All." We're going to go ahead and select all of the items, and it's going to select everything. We have our weighted listings, "Buy It Now" listings, I have things such as saying "Welcome In," or "We're showing new inventory," "We're ending the show," or "I'm taking a break," right? So, I'm going to scroll all the way down. Clone 104 items. Are you sure you want to clone them? Yes, we do. Now, give it a second. Don't exit out of the screen, or they won't clone. You need to wait until you get the little popup that says that they are done cloning. So, just give it a second. There it is. Click OK.
And what I like about Chrome on my phone, at least, is it does actually pull up that show. So, what I like to do is then work off of the Chrome screen here. It's pretty simple. Um, what I'm going to go ahead and do is I'll show you the inventory that it did pop in there now, so you can see our auction now has items in it. Our "Buy It Now" has items in it, right? So, super cool. I want to click on this little "Notes" option here on the right-hand side. You see a little notepad. It's going to pull up a notes section, and this is something that is going to be pinned on your screen as you're running your auction, that people can click on, and you can tell them whatever it is they need to know so you're not having to repeat yourself too many times throughout your show. Now, there is a little clipboard. You can see, um, I don't know if you can see, but it is, it's a little clipboard right here, and I'm going to click on that little clipboard, and it's actually going to pull in all my notes from my last show, which was on Saturday. And since Saturday and Tuesdays are the same shows, both books, I can just clone over those notes. Click the "Post" button, and now they are posted up. So, super cool.
Now I'm going to go ahead and get out of the Chrome and go back over to the app and kind of show you now what it looks like. So, again, now we're in the app. You can see we've got all of our items listed here. We have our "Buy It Now," so everything's just cloned over. I don't have to relist these items every single time I'm doing doing a show. They're just cloning over. When when an item sells, it won't be able to be cloned because it will have been sold, so it'll disappear from your from your store. Um, all right, let's go ahead and move on to one of our other steps here, which is something you can do now, you can do it later, but at some point you want to make sure you're remembering to put in giveaways. So, if you see here at the top, it says, uh, "Giveaway." We want to click on the little giveaway section there. You don't have to, you can just click "Add Product," but there's nothing listed in the giveaway section. So, I'm going to go ahead and click "Create a Product." I always create a product. I never import from inventory, and I never quick add. I always am creating a product. That's just how I do it, that's what works for me. Um, and what I'm going to go ahead and do is add in a little thank you photo, and the information. I have my image here pulled up that says "Thank You," and I'll click "Complete." So, that is what it'll look like. That's just the image. It's just something cute, and I'm going to put it on books, and then I'm just going to title this "Thank You, Bye SGie," and I'm going to just say, um, "Winner picks one book under one pound." All right, I'm not going to fill out any of that information. I always do three of these on Tuesday. Toggle it on over to "Giveaway." You want to make sure you are toggling it over to "Giveaway," and then I'm going to click this one, "Buyer Appreciation," not "Followers Only," 'cause this is going to be just for buyers. And then I always put it at the lowest weight possible because it just doesn't matter, 0 to 1 ounces, and it's not hazardous. So, I'll just go ahead and click "Publish." It'll always confirm that you are creating a giveaway and that this is a buyer giveaway and you can't modify it, and I'll click "Confirm." And now in my giveaway section, I have all three of my little buyer giveaways there. Every now and again, I will put in raid giveaways as well, and I highly recommend that you do, and I probably will go ahead and put some raid giveaways in here in a second, but normally I like to have those in, and just if we get rated, you can just run it, and I'll say in the description, "Host's choice," so it doesn't have to be anything crazy, it can be whatever you decide, um, based on maybe the size of the giveaway, um, or who even rated into you, depending on, you know, if one or two people came in, or did they bring in 50 people, and that could determine what giveaway you do.
All right, so we have majority of the steps down now. We have organized our inventory, we have taken a thumbnail and a preview video and uploaded those to our show, we cloned over all of our past inventory and everything that we need listed in our auction and "Buy It Now" to run our show, and that's all now in our upcoming show, and we also cloned over our show notes. So, when people pop in, they can find some sort of information on the screen letting them know what's going on. So, now that we have all that done, we have got two more things we still need to do. We went a little out of order, but again, it does not matter the order you do these. It just really depends on your flow and what works best for you. One of the next steps we have to do is create an Instagram post. So, I'm going to just open up my Instagram, go to my story. I really don't post on my actual page, like my grid, very often, but I do love a good story. So, I'm going to, uh, the camera roll on my Instagram app directly, and I'm just going to pop down here and basically just do a quick little preview, and this is what it looks like. "Hey everyone, here is tonight's new inventory preview. It is not very much chapter book, so I do apologize in advance for that, but I do have a good bit of like vintagey stuff tonight and a lot of board books as well. So, come hang out, grab a deal, get your bundle for the week started, and I'll catch you guys in just a few."
All right, so super easy. That's it. And I will literally just post that directly to my story, and that's it. And that's posting. And now I'm reaching an audience of people who know me from Whatnot, but also people who kind of maybe know me from Whatnot but don't really come to my shows often, and it's just a fresh reminder to them of like, "Hey, Amanda goes live on Tuesdays. Pop into her show." So, we can check that off of our list. And we have one last thing we need to do, which is take pictures of the shelf. So, I'm going to show you guys what that looks like real quick, and we will be done prepping for the show. In all of my auctions, I have pictures of all of my bookshelves pictured at all times, and I try to keep them as up-to-date as possible. And that way, while I'm showing new inventory or people are just hanging out in the chat, they can also go to the auction tab and actually see what's on all of my bookshelves. All of these books are for sale, and I want people to be able to access them and see them at any time. So, I have in my auction tab set up a few different categories of my shelves. So, when I go to my auction tab, I have my adult shelves, I have Baron Steam Bears books, bilingual Spanish books, my board bookshelves pictured. I have my chapter books divided up by boy-themed and girl-themed chapter books. I've got cookbooks, drawing, Dr. Seuss, educational. You can see the list kind of goes on and on, and this is just the main categories of what I have, and the best way for people to browse while I am showing what's in front of me.
So, we're, we're going to go ahead and go over here, um, to our very first listing. I usually start over here on the adult shelf, and we're going to just edit this and basically just go ahead and delete all of these photos because these are not up to date. They are partially up to date, but things have changed since our last show. So, we're going to go ahead and re-photograph this. So, let me show you guys what that looks like. So, I like to take one big image of the main section that we're taking a photo of, and then I'll take some smaller up-close images. So, we'll do one here, we got these, then we've got one, two, three. We'll do four and five. And that's it. So, that is all of the adult shelves. We'll click "Complete" and "Publish," and now that shelf is technically up to date.
So, let's kind of just go down this row here. I'll show you guys one or two more times what that looks like. Um, we'll go over here to young adult. So, young adult is down here. Same deal. We're going to edit it, delete all the photos, and retake them. So, again, taking one large photo of everything, and then coming in for a couple of up-close images. There we go. So, it's pretty easy, especially when I don't have to pull anything out. These are easy shelves to take pictures of because I'm just showing you the spines. Picture books, um, can be a little harder because you can't just take a picture of the spine. You do actually have to pull all those books out. I'm not going to be updating my picture books today, I don't think, but it is a lot easier when you're just picturing chapters. So, keep that in mind if you're trying to take photos of like maybe non-fiction books or things that are thin without spine titles, you need to pull them all out and lay them flat. My one main image, and then I just kind of go through, and you'll learn how to play with the amount of photos you can use. I believe, let's see, it's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight photos is how many photos you can take. So, you'll learn how many, like, where you need to point your camera to get your eight photos, but I almost always use all eight photos. There we go, and that's that. So, that's just kind of what the updating shelves looks like. It's not that hard, but it is something you do have to take some time out of your, like, schedule and plan to do so that people can see what you have available.
So, I'm going to go ahead and, um, call it on our first part of this video, which is the pre-show, the all the things you need to get done. So, we've taken pictures of the shelves, we've cloned over our inventory as well as our show notes, we've added giveaways, we've let people know what we have going on tonight by putting out thumbnails, preview videos, Instagram posts, and we got all this inventory together at the very beginning. So, we've done all of the steps, and we are set up as far as we need to be. If you are in a realistic day like me, this would be a good time for me to go grab lunch, or maybe work on some more shipments and getting packages out the door, or answering messages, customer service things like that. So, I am doing things a lot of times between the couple hours before my show that I did all of this pre-show work and then doing the actual show. So, you'll get the rhythm and the flow when you start to implement these shows into your days, especially if you're doing it one singular day out of the week, you're going to find a schedule that works really, really well for you and how that day needs to flow. But I would recommend, especially with books, um, that this is kind of the way that you, you set everything up, getting, getting things photographed in your auction tab, having your listings ready to go so you're not sitting there in the middle of a show trying to add listings manually, and having everything organized is going to help set an expectation. And so that's my pre-show regimen, and we'll go ahead and take a quick break, and then we are going to get into what we do when we start streaming. I'm going to show you guys what it looks like when we go live. We're going to record a little bit throughout the auction. I'll try to throw some screen records in as well as some live footage, and answer some of the questions you guys have been asking me as I'm doing the show to kind of help you better understand how the show actually looks. Okay.
All right, we're in stage two. This is going to be known as our showtime stage. This is when we are getting ready to go live, press "Start Show," and be in front of a live audience selling our items. So, I have one more small checklist I want to go through with you guys, just so that you kind of have an idea of some of the like items that I feel like you need to do a show. Um, some of these are just, to me, non-negotiables. So, these are some things that I think that you need to have available and ready to go before you click "Start Show." So, first up, we did our auction setup, right? That is out of the way. You can officially say you set up your auction. You put in your listings, you put in your giveaways, you are good to go. So, that when you go live, you're not fumbling around trying to put in a bunch of things that you forgot to put into your show and kind of wasting time, right?
So, next up for me, a big one is music or modifying or understanding what your background noise situation is going to be. So, music isn't for everyone. I personally love to use music. I actually have a Spotify playlist just titled "Whatnot." I think it has over 400 songs on it, and it just shuffles through throughout the show, and it works really, really well for me. So, I like to have something for people to listen to, as well as myself sitting here for hours on end, um, just by myself with no one else to talk to other than the chat can be a little lonely. So, I like to have music on in the background. And the reason why I also say background noise is because I think it's just important to remember if you're streaming from home, maybe you have children or pets or other people around you, um, or noises like fans or traffic, whatever it might be, and just making sure that when you're going live, that some of that stuff is either, uh, lowered or in check, or you just kind of understand that people can hear what's going on around you. So, if your kids are playing in the other room, that's totally fine, but people might be able to hear those sounds. And so trying the best you can to go live with a quiet atmosphere or some light background noise or music is going to be your best bet.
All right, next up, couple things you can't live without to go live. First up is going to be a tripod. I think everyone needs just a general tripod. These things are very inexpensive. You can get some as low as like $10. You can pay up for maybe $20 or $30 for certain ones. I believe mine was around the $15 to $20 mark. I'll try to put a screenshot here if I can. Um, it works really, really well. It's got a phone attachment, and I love it. Highly recommend it.
Next up is going to be a phone charger. Whatnot is a huge battery suck. If you are ever just watching a show on Whatnot, you'll notice your battery drains really, really quickly. So, making sure you are plugged into a power source is going to be super important, especially if you're streaming for longer than an hour or two at a time.
Next up is going to be some sort of lighting system. I use this standard little softbox. It works really well. It provides a nice muted but bright light at the same time, and it just stays and lives here in my office, and I just pop it on, and it gives me light even on a rainy, cloudy day. If you can utilize some sort of natural light coming in from a window, that's always great, but as long as it's not too dark and hard for people to see, you're going to be okay. You don't really need any fancy lighting.
It is helpful though if you plan on running auctions like I do. You're going to want a scale so that you can live weigh the items and ensure that you're running them at the right weight. So, I do just keep a scale right here next to me, and anytime I'm running an auction, I pop a book on there just to confirm that I have the right weight.
And last but not least, I really think everyone needs like a notepad, Post-it notes, a pen, something to just write things down. For me, I do a lot of labeling with the bundles or with the auctions. So, I have these tiny little Post-it notes that I use. I buy them in bulk, and I just write down the names on the bundles or the number of auction that it is and put those on the books. I also have just a plain notepad that I use, as well as a pen. So, notepad, paper, pen, pencil, whatever it is, is going to be very helpful. And with that said, I think if you have all of those things, you are going to be completely set up for success to start your Whatnot show.
So, now that we've got that out of the way, let's go ahead and get into the the show. I'm going to go live here and document it the best that I can. Hi everybody. Welcome in, welcome in, welcome in. Here is our new inventory for tonight. We have a fairly small selection, um, but we do have some new books. I'm going to be going through these books one at a time. We'll be having a pretty quick show today. It feels like a whatnot thing too. They're doing a lot of backend updates.
This is the store. This is the shelves. This is what it kind of looks like here. We have books for all ages. And all of these shelves are pictured in the auction tab, which is down here in this little store. You can click that on that and browse at any time or make requests. Um, we are going to have the new inventory down here. Going through it's going to take us probably less than an hour to go through today's inventory and show. We're going to go ahead and get started.
I'm going to grab our first stack of inventory. We really don't have a whole lot here, unfortu- nately, uh, but we do have some good stuff. We've got board books, picture-style books, and chapter books. Um, I think I'm going to go ahead and actually start off with the chapter books today since that's what we have, like, I think the least of. So we'll go through those. Uh, we'll start making piles for those of you guys that are interested in getting a bundle started today. And yeah, we'll take requests from the shelves. Just let me know what I can get for you all.
Yes, I definitely can. "It Happened One Summer" and "Shazam." That one, I believe. Yes, this is a $6 if that's okay for you. It's in really great shape, super clean. So that one is six if that works for you. I'll go ahead and get your pile started. Okay, perfect. So this is a great example. We're starting our first bundle today, and "Shazam" is kicking us off. Um, so I will just write Shazam's name down, put it here on the corner of the book, and basically just place it down here on the ground. And that is our first bundle. So we'll keep adding to that as they see more that they're interested in. Yeah, it looks so good. Let's go ahead and get official started. If anyone has any other requests, drop them at any time. So basically, here's what we're going to go ahead do. We are going to run through the new inventory one at a time. We got "Master Chef Junior Bakes." We had a request in the chat for that one, so let's go ahead and start a lady's pile. Hey, lady, with "Master Chef Junior Bakes." Perfect, perfect. Love to see it. All righty, so let's get rocking and rolling. I'm going to start from the top of the stack, work my way down. As I get to a book, if you are interested in it, just say the title of the book. Try not to say something like "run," "want me," "bundle mine," "add pile" because those are all very vague expressions. Say the title or part of the title, and I'll start a pile for you. Most all of my books today are going to be $4 or less. I have maybe one or two books that are $5 or more, uh, but most everything today is under four bucks. So you guys can think about that as we're going through. Let me know if you have any specific questions, and let's get started.
All righty. Like I said, I've been trying to pick up some of these like vintagey-style books, things that maybe I wouldn't pick up. A lot of stuff for crafting. Um, I thought this one was fun. This is "Pond Life," and it just has a ton of like images in it. So I know you guys have been liking some of these like wildlife-style things. Um, the Buy It Now pictures, no, like the items that are listed in the buy it now, those are just cloned over every single show. Um, but the pictures in the auction tab, I do update. Not every show, but I update them at least every other week. But I update the adult shelves every show, pretty much. Young adult shelves and board books, those are the three that fluctuate the most. But the other, the other ones I update once a week or once every other week.
All right, hey lady, adding "Pond Life" to your pile here. So here's hey lady's pile. All righty, we have a mythology little dictionary. I thought this was fun. It is clearly an X-library. I don't go, I don't have any blister crawly. Au? Yep, no worries. Yeah, the auction tab, adult, young adult, board are all up to date today. Everything else is from last week. So there may be a few things missing here and there, but I'll have those updated for you guys on Saturday for sure. It's been about a week since I've had them updated. Um, so this one's really cool. It is literally like a mythological dictionary. Has all of these mythological like characters and people in it and what they're known for. So I thought that was really, really neat. All alphabetical, comprehensive dictionary of classical mythology with over 2,000 entries. Super neat. Isn't that cool? And like I said, it's probably an ex-library of some sort.
All right, so Amanii, and Aman has a name tag. She is a regular, so we'll get her pile started. And she lives up here in the corner. You get into the habit of putting people in certain spots for sure. We have "Pokemon." You missed it. Yeah, it's over there. You're in the corner in your spot. "Pokemon: The Voice of the Forest." Yeah, you had a, I had to write you on a Post-it note the other day. I don't know what that was all about. It felt wrong. It felt very wrong. This one's really cool. It has picture, like full-color images on the inside. Gotcha. Hey lady.
All right, we have a "Scooby-Doo." And guys, I have so many more of these. If anyone's interested in "Scooby-Doo" chapter, let me know. I just have a ton right now. Now, this one is "Toy Store Terror." Cute little kids' chapter. Let's hope every, I know, guys, don't, don't get all crazy in the chat because we're, because you're in public, you know? It's like having a substitute teacher. You feel like you get to wild out.
All righty, we have our one and only over $5 book, I think. I don't think I have anything else over $5. This one is going to be seven. This is "Snowed In For Christmas: The Fire's A Glow." So let it snow. No, very clean copy here. "The weather outside is frightful, but inside things are heating up in this sexy holiday romantic comedy." So here's your synopsis, uh, for chapter books. I always like to hold up the synopsis so you guys can get a glimpse and, of course, show the condition as well. Hey Mattel, it's been a minute. All right, Becca, I got you on "Snowed In." I'll get your pile started for you. Just working. I feel that. That is totally understandable. Well, I hope you're doing well. I like the new profile picture.
All right, we have "Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault." And this one has some classics in it. I'll show you guys some of the titles. You've got "Little Red Riding Hood," "Sleeping Beauty in the Wood," uh, a couple of classics here. And then it is actually illustrated throughout as well with these really pretty, like black and white kind of illustrations. And just a really neat little collection of fairy tale classics. All right, we have a little bit of wear on this ex-library. You guys can see it does have some bending up here on the corner. So this one's going to be just $2. It still had excellent reviews, so I had to pick it up. It looked like right up some people's alley. "Exile Music," set during World War II, the captivating story of a young Jewish girl whose family flees Vienna for safety in the mountains of Bolivia. And Amanii, I got "Fairy Tales" in your pile for you. So again, just $2 on this one, just a little bit of wear up here on the top little corners, but looks like an incredible story and it had good reviews, so I was like, yeah, I'll take it.
All right, so we got "Fairy Tales" for Amanii. All right, y'all liked these little, like cozy mysteries. I pulled one last week, and I did end up finding another one today, so I grabbed it. This is "Quenching Trouble." And these are just beautiful books in general. They're like gorgeous little hardcover with jackets. I love them. And then they have the little ribbon bookmark as well. Bright, you're just, I thought you were bronze already. I love to see it. Unlocking that bronze tier, getting that $5 off coupon. So here is that synopsis. I'll let you guys get a glimpse here. And this is called "Quenching Trouble," little kind of cozy mystery style. These are all about, um, museums. It's like the gist of these.
All right, and then a couple of vintage books. We have this beautiful poetry book. It's called "Florida Poets." I picked this one up just for you, Ver, or, um, Cynthia. So it says, "Late happy birthday, 1972, to Rose from Genevieve." Very cute. There is some slight breaking there in the spine, and the copyright date is 1931, it looks like. So it's 1931. And let me just show you some of the pages here. They're, oh no, I just did that. A little rip, but they are just full poetry pages. So pretty. And it was older, so I figured you would want that one. Yeah, it says 1931. That's the oldest, the latest date that I'm seeing there. So, yep, you got it. So I'll add that to your pile right here. We have this beautiful, um, "Story of the Bible for Old and Young." And it is a gorgeous book. So I'll show you guys what the inside looks like. Look at this. You have these beautiful illustrations, and then you do have some colored illustrations as well. So it is absolutely gorgeous. And this one has some illust, um, inscriptions too. It does have an inscription for August 2nd, 1928 date, but it's gorgeous whether you want to use it for keepsake or crafting. I think super, super cool. Yeah, like I said, I had to grab some of those for sure.
All right, JC, I got you on the Bible. That is right up your alley. Perfect, perfect. All right, last three chapter books here, guys. We have "The Raven Heir." Three triplets, one empty throne. And also, just a reminder, um, for those of you guys that are brand new or just aren't familiar exactly with how my show works, I want to let you guys know about the cubby. And Jenna, I got you on, um, "Meeting Her Match." That looked so good. But yes, somebody grabbed "It Happened One Summer" already. Um, I do offer something called a cubby. It's a small pile hold system, essentially. And so what I do is starting every week on Tuesday, you can utilize the cubby, which is as long as your stack of books at the end of the day is under 6 inches tall, you can hold your books in the cubby system and come back to one of the future shows and add books to it and then cash out with a larger pile. So for example, uh, we will actually have a couple of book shows this week. We'll have one on Friday and one on Saturday. If you want to come back on Friday, add some more books to your stack and maybe see if you can utilize a better, you know, get a better shipping rate, that's kind of what the point is. So you're not paying shipping every show. You are always more than welcome to do that as long as your stack is below 6 inches. That's all you need to really know about that one. Got you, Jenny. So very whimsical, beautiful, pastely kind of style. Just love that neutral, whimsical vibe. All right, Morgan, I got you on "Wish." Look at how pretty this is. I love it. Um, beautiful little color, not coloring, um, artistic renditions, I guess, of these different animals, just in a very different way. So cute, very artsy feeling ABCs. All right, Emily, got you. "Where's the Tiger Hiding?" and "Can You See a Toucan Too?" So super cute. All right, we've got "Feelings" for Emily.
All right, so that is everything. That is all the new inventory. So I will definitely flip back through these one more time here in a moment. All right, so we raided into this seller, and this is their first show. Um, this is what it looks like. Unfortunately, they don't really have anything super exciting going on in their show for us to like, for people to really want to stick around. There's nothing for them to look at. There's just an easel there. It would be really awesome if they had maybe a bunch of books going on in the background or something that a little more interesting. I like to go to their store and kind of see. So they do have some books. Unfortunately, they must have them to the side. It would have been probably pretty smart for them to actually like lay them out so people could see all the options and maybe call out some requests. But this is fine too. This is very common for someone's first show. But, um, yeah, they're doing a good job. They're just kind of showing, showing the books and stuff like that. Sometimes I'll say hi in the chat. I'm not going to say anything today because I'm not really sticking around. But, um, when you raid into someone, sometimes it's nice to to interact and just say hi or have a good show, and then you can exit out and take a breath. Take a breath. You just did your show. Congratulations, you're done.
So for a little quick recap of what we did, we sold one bundle, which you should have seen me enter there on the screen. So we have one bundle sold. So this is the only thing that we're going to be shipping out. This is the only thing that physically sold in today's show. But if you look over here in the cubby, you're going to see all of these books were claimed. So we definitely had a lot of good piles claimed. It's just that I use the cubby system as a great way for buyers to save money on shipping, and they love it just as much as I do. So, um, they will come back either on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday and purchase those books when they come back in. So, um, with the cubby, everyone has to cash out by Saturday. It starts on Tuesday, ends on Saturday. As long as your stack is below 6 inches, you can hold those books. And this is a great example of just why I do this, just to kind of show you like this book right here. This is a great book, and she really wanted this book, and I don't blame her. This is a really good book. But this is the only book she wanted, and so she could pay $7 for the book and then probably about $4 to $5 in shipping on this single book, or she could come back in on Saturday, which is what she's probably going to do, and add maybe anywhere from one to five or six more books to her stack, cash out, and her her shipping is probably going to still be under like $10. So she can pay one time for one shipping cost versus paying twice, two shipping costs. So that's kind of why we utilize the cubby and how that works.
All right, so we just finished our show. Super exciting stuff. And what I like to do after I've raided into someone, maybe interacted a little bit, and taken my deep breath and felt my happiness of being done with the show, I like to do what's commonly referred to as resetting to zero. Just getting your space kind of back to where it should be so that you can come in and basically start fresh without having to clean up before you get your day started or your next show started. So some of the things I like to do is just like turn off my music. Phone, which we didn't end up using today. Um, so make sure the screen is off because if not, it'll stay on. And then I like to clean up my name tags and my Post-it notes and just kind of set them up here in this little spot so they're off my table. I also take my pen away, and then I tend to move my drinks over here so I can take those out of the office with me. So now all that's good. Um, I want to go ahead and break down my tripod just because it doesn't need to be up and open. It just kind of fills up too much space when it is, and then I can just kind of set this completely out of my way. And then normally I'd have all of my book piles either like on the floor or auction books over here, um, variety of things. But I just have this one pile, and it's the only thing in the order. So I'm just going to go ahead and take it next door and get it out of here. And then the only thing that I had left is to just put these away. But I tend to do that the next day. Um, not always the same day I run an auction. So I won't be doing that today. Those will stay there. I'll come in and put those away tomorrow. But that was a really easy reset to zero. But it's important. It's like simple stuff. Just like get it out of your way. Make sure your space is clean. And then I'll, of course, like turn my light off when I'm done and wrap it up and call it, call it a show. And then if you want to start with the process of organizing your orders and moving them to your shipping station and even shipping out your orders, that's great. I tend to do a lot of that the next day that I come in.
All right, guys, that is a wrap on what it looks like on a whatnot auction from start to finish. I really, really hope that that was as inclusive as it felt like it was. I think that the process from start to finish is fairly easy once you get it into like a routine and a habit. It just kind of becomes second nature. You've got to prep the inventory and get it ready to to sell. You need to give people something to look at in your auction, whether it's taking photos of your shelves or making individual listings or putting stuff in a buy it now. You definitely want to utilize the giveaway system system and overall just be prepared and ready for a show by having all of the utensils that you need, like Post-it notes, pens, a scale, all of that good stuff. Right? And then during the show, hopefully you guys were able to kind of see how it works and runs. I tried my best to really showcase what a true auction looks like. Now, as you noticed in this show, we didn't do a single auction. We ran one, but the person passed as it was running, so we didn't end up running any actual auctions. We did one bundle, and then everyone else put their piles to the side. So not very tangible on the, um, I guess what the purchasing side of it looks like from a buyer, but I think from a seller point of view, you got a really good idea of how it works and runs. And then, of course, you had the post-show, what it looks like afterwards, resetting to zero, and be basically preparing yourself for your next auction. So I really hope that was good for you guys. I think that it is so simple once you start doing it. It is really just getting the first show out of the way. If you have not gone live yet and you are considering it, I highly recommend getting that first show out of the way because the amount of things you're going to learn doing your first show is indescribable. I can't make it make sense to you until you do it. And then after you do that first show, I need you to do four to five more shows and then see how you feel. I always recommend people doing at least five shows because it gives you plenty of time to work all the kinks out and start gaining your following and seeing who your buyer base are and what they like, and if they like the stuff you're selling or if they don't like the stuff you're selling. So get out there and get started with it. I, I hope that this tutorial was a bit of a, a motivator to encourage you that it's not as challenging as it may seem, and you can take all the stuff I did and modify it in any way that you think better works for you. I know that I have a larger space and I have shelving, and so it can seem like, well, I have a whole setup, but you can make a setup like this in your own house, even. You can have one bookshelf with some books on it, and that is really appealing to people. As long as they're good quality books that people desire, you're going to do just fine.
