Your voiceovers are boring, and we are going to fix that. Welcome back to Vlogging 101.
My number one rule for voiceovers: don't tell me what you're doing, tell me what you're feeling. Way too many people write their voiceovers like a play-by-play. "Come work from a coffee shop with me. So, first I started walking to the coffee shop, and then once I got there, I ordered a latte, and I set my laptop down, and then I did some writing." Yeah, girl, we know. We can see that.
It's much more interesting to tell us how you felt in that moment. Were you excited to try a new cafe? Were you dreading the work that you had to get done that day? Tell us about that instead. If your feelings in any particular moment aren't overly interesting, you could tell us about something completely different. Tell us about something you've been reflecting on lately, your hot take on something in pop culture, or maybe a goal that you're working towards at the moment.
Now, your B-roll doesn't always have to connect directly with what your voiceover is saying. Sometimes, in fact, it's even more interesting to tell two stories simultaneously, one with the voiceover and one with the visuals, as long as the tone and the mood of both align. Like, don't tell me a really sad and dark story with B-roll of you like laughing and joking around.
And finally, but probably most importantly, record your voiceovers and edit the B-roll to match, not the other way around. If you play your video back and then rush to record your voiceover at the same time, that's just going to end up awkward for both of us.
