As a project manager with over 10 years experience in my PNP, this is how I would define what a project manager does.
So, project managers, we can think of as expectations managers. They are there to manage the expectations of the client around four key areas. First is going to be our scope: what is it that actually has to be delivered? Next is going to be our schedule: how long is it going to take to deliver that? And then we're going to have our costs: how much is it going to cost to deliver that? And finally, is going to be our quality, because if we don't have quality built into the project, it's not going to be successful.
So, project managers work closely with the project team and with other stakeholders to ensure the success of the project by managing these four key areas, using skill sets like communication, organizational skills, being detail-oriented, an array of other skills to ensure the success of the project.
