When working in luxury, understanding the wealth categories of your clients is key to delivering the experience they expect. If you can master this, you'll be able to tailor your approach to meet their unique needs and desires. I'm Paul Russell, consumer behavior psychologist and co-founder of Luxury Academy, and today I'll take you through the four main categories of wealth as defined by the World Bank. By the end of this video, you'll have a better understanding of how to connect with affluent, high net worth, very high net worth, and ultra high net worth individuals, helping you build stronger relationships and deliver more meaningful luxury experiences.

Let's start with affluent individuals. These are people with liquid assets ranging from $100,000 to a million dollars. So, what exactly are liquid assets? It's simple: they are cash or anything that can be quickly turned into cash, like stocks or savings. Think of an affluent individual as a small business owner who's doing very well. They might take premium holidays, buy quality items for home, and enjoy a comfortable life, but they're careful with how they spend their money. They enjoy luxury, but it has to be worth the investment.

Next, we move on to high net worth individuals. These are people with liquid assets between a million dollars and $5 million. Picture a senior partner at a law firm. They drive a luxury car, maybe a Mercedes, and enjoy the finer things in life. They can afford bespoke clothing and exclusive services, indulging in experiences that reflect their success and confidence in their financial stability.

Then, we have very high net worth individuals. These clients have between $5 million and $30 million in liquid assets. Imagine a tech company founder, for example, who charters private jets or owns a luxury yacht. These individuals expect high levels of privacy and exclusivity. For them, luxury isn't just about the products; it's about enjoying the best experiences and services that the world has to offer.

Finally, we reach the top of the wealth pyramid: ultra high net worth individuals. These are the billionaires and global investors with over $30 million in liquid assets. Think of someone like Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk. They're not just buying things; they're setting trends. They're after the rarest, most exclusive items and experiences, like collecting rare art or firing themselves into space for a bit of fun. For them, it's all about uniqueness and prestige.

Understanding these categories is crucial for anyone in the luxury sector. It allows us to tailor our interactions and services to match each client's financial standing and lifestyle aspirations. For affluent individuals, it's about offering a taste of luxury that's accessible and aspirational, think brands like Armani, which combine quality with a touch of prestige. High net worth individuals are willing to invest in quality and craftsmanship. They appreciate brands that reflect their success, like Patek Philippe, which symbolizes status and legacy. Very high net worth individuals demand ultra-luxury experiences, valuing privacy and exceptional service. They might be drawn to exclusive clubs or personalized travel experiences that cater to their high standards. For ultra high net worth individuals, it's all about offering the rarest, most bespoke items and experiences. These clients want something that aligns with their elite status and provides them with a sense of exclusivity and distinction.
