Potting a Circuit Board

Here's a $10,000 a month side business that involves squirting goop into a box. Oh, YouTube's coming for me with that rage bait. Anyway, allow me 3 minutes to use Hammond part number 1596 Bravo 103. We're going to do proprietary encapsulation. We're going to put this little switching power supply in this box with wire leads coming out. We're going to pot it.

Jason, what magic are we going to use to accomplish this? We're going to use Smooth-On's Onyx Black Fast. This has a 2 and 1/2 minute pot life, cures in 10 minutes rock hard and it's a urethane material. So, what I've started doing is putting a tiny little hole so that you don't get a bunch of air in there. And if you do get air, it's not going to cause the cap to seal to the bottle.

Jason, where do you get a circuit board like that? Well, you could message me and I'll make you one or you could design one yourself in KiCad, use AI to help you learn how to do that, and order it from JLCPCB or like Sierra Circuits out in California. Then your circuit needs wires. So, we're going to come over to our wire cart and this is where I have like multi-strand wire. Let's use like a 24-gauge multi-strand and we're going to use a crimp tool with this little JST XH connector.

Depending on where your little potted widget ends up living its life, you probably don't want to incur that extra liability of having your part fail. So, if you use like the $25 AliExpress crimp tool and not the $350 proper JST crimp tool, you might be setting yourself up for some issues later down the line. Or I'm just a snob. I mean, after all I do prefer Torx. If you're really bootstrapping it and you can't afford that tool yet, you can buy pre-crimped wires from Digi-Key. Right there. You can cut them and strip them. I'm a big fan of this DataShark stripper. Man, I'm using some flagged keywords in this video and it's just simple. I'm just trying to make stuff with electronics.

Now some real talk. Remember cutting, stripping, and squirting goop in the box in the context of this 3D printed files ban that everybody's talking about. Society telling you what you can and can't print on your printer or cut on your CNC machine. Yes, you are going to want a soldering iron. I did say soldering, not soldering. Now our circuit has what we call flying leads and it's ready to be potted. It kind of looks like that UAP.

Next step, take the circuit and put it into the potting shell. That's where it's going to live its life. Now we've got part A, part B, we've got a syringe, we've got two mixing cups. Remember our little napkins we cut? Two popsicle sticks. Because I want to mix it once and then transfer it into a final mix and then use the syringe to transfer it. I'm super careful about this cuz I don't want my finished part to be goopy.

Now my absolute favorite part. We're going to take those flying leads and we're going to snap them into the housing. This happens to be part number XHP-4 and I got these from Digikey. This is so much fun that it's almost worth not even having a real job, making like half your income and just snapping these together on the couch. I did say $10,000 month business.
