Donald Trump has now weighed in on the scandal that is plaguing the GOP today, wherein Ohio Congressman Max Miller, according to reporting, is accused of throwing hot water at his ex-wife, shoving her, holding a gun to her head, and even breaking his daughter's collarbone.
Now, Miller attempted to salvage his reputation today, saying in part this, "My former wife has claimed that during a custody exchange at my home that day, I assaulted her. Here's what actually happened. And I have the Ring doorbell footage that backs it up. She came to my home in a good mood, and we have text messages to prove it, which you'll have, to pick up our daughter early for a friend's birthday party. She was inside my house for several minutes when she left. The video shows her walking out, carrying our daughter calm, in the same good mood, showing no distress whatsoever. And as they left, you can hear me say goodbye, I love you, and I love you, Ruthie. Literally telling my ex-wife that I still cared for her. Does that sound like somebody who would just walk out and who had been violently thrown a wall and been abused? She didn't call the police after that. She didn't go to the hospital, ladies and gentlemen. Do you want to know what she did? She went straight to a child's birthday party. The very next day, we had a friendly phone call about our daughter's upcoming hospital procedure, and I drove in from Washington to be there for it. 6 days later, she offered to cook empanadas for me for dinner just 2 days later after this alleged incident. The day after that, she invited me and my girlfriend and which you'll have in text messages to join her and our daughter at a playground. And that day, I just went with my former wife to the playground to spend time with our daughter. A week later on February 15th, she wrote to me in her own words, which you will see, "I think it's great you and I are in a friendlier place." She then offered me more extra overnights with our daughter, which I can prove to every single one of you is recently. Every one of these messages is timestamped on our courts sanctioned co-parenting app and is all in the packet. Only weeks later did the story of February 1st assault appear. So ask yourself, if I had assaulted her, would she had offered to cook me dinner 6 days later? Would she have invited me to spend an afternoon at the playground with her and our daughter? Would she have written that we were in a friendlier place? No, she wouldn't have. Ladies and gentlemen, >> yes, great call. If you abused her, why would she come back? That would surely be the first time in history that someone stayed in an abusive relationship. Perfect point, Max."
But Trump has now weighed in on the news saying this. "A lot of people like it. A lot of big supporters of Trump like it." >> "Mr. President allegations against Congressman Max Miller." >> "I just learned about." >> "He should resign." >> "Well, I'm going to look at it. I mean, so far it's accusations. I'll be looking at it."
"So far it's accusations." That's the guidance from the leader of the Party of Family Values. Don't worry everybody, he'll look at it. The guy who bragged about grabbing women by the and who was just found liable in court for sexual abuse and defamation is going to give this a fair look. Thank God we've got somebody in charge who has no tolerance for predatory behavior and has shown nothing but respect to women. Few.
In fact, Trump wasn't the only person to speak out today. Notably, Senator Bernie Moreno, who is the father of Max Miller's ex-wife, Emily, managed to find his tongue, writing on Twitter, "As a father and husband, I can tell you the last two years have been pure hell for my wife Bridget, our daughter Emily, me, and our entire family in the aftermath of Emily's divorce. It has been horrific to watch this play out in full public view, all while knowing an innocent 2-year-old girl is caught in the middle. Our priority has always been protecting our daughter and our granddaughter. Out of concern for the safety of my family, I hope to keep this matter private. But Max Miller's increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior has made that impossible. As he has admitted privately, Max Miller needs serious psychological help. He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter. If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them. He should not serve in the House of Representatives. I believe Max Miller needs to seek professional help to end the clear pattern of abuse that he has left in his wake. I believe he should not be free to continue endangering others until he does. I ran for office because I wanted to make a difference for the country that gave me every opportunity to succeed and to leave this nation better for my children and grandchildren. That sacrifice has been especially hard on my wife Bridget whose big heart and steady support have never wavered. I owe it to her, to Emily, and to my granddaughter to speak the truth."
Now, now look, normally I wouldn't really think that it's my place to comment on somebody's interpersonal family disputes, but considering both Bernie Mareno and Max Miller are public figures, I think it's fair to ask, what took Bernie Mareno so long? I mean, my god, if my daughter or sister or mom or grandmother or aunt or friend was in the position that Bernie Marino's daughter is in, I wouldn't let 5 seconds go by. But because morality is so absent in the GOP, because these people are such shameless, power- hungry fiends for whom nothing is disqualifying to serve in office anymore. Apparently, only now could Moreno manage to speak out. Look, we're not going to suddenly teach morality to Republican- elected officials. I think that ship has long since sailed. But for everybody watching, my best advice here is don't be Max Miller or Bernie Marino. Treat women with respect. And when you see something, don't wait for weeks or months to grow enough of a spine to say something.
Although, frankly, given Trump's reaction, is it any surprise? Again, this is a party that views nothing as disqualifying. Roy Moore was a pedophile. They all supported him. Matt Gates was accused of sex trafficking of a minor. He was nominated to be the nation's top law enforcement official. Hell, Trump himself is engaged in so much corruption that it is impossible to even quantify it at this point, which is to say nothing of the fact that the entire Trump administration is covering up the Epstein files. This is what happens when a rot has pervaded an entire political party to no end. These people have zero moral high ground. They are a cabal of cheats, frauds, scammers, predators, and the ones who manage to be none of those things, well, they're just cowards.
In fact, listen to what George Santos said on the House floor back in 2023. >> "You, sir, are a crook. I know I should direct my comments to the chair. I yield back. My colleague wants to come up here. Call me a crook. Same colleague who's accused of being a woman beater. Are we Are we really going to ignore the facts that we all have past and we all have the media coming out against us on a daily basis? I can go and read about all my colleagues. I'm not going to stand here to smear them. I'm not going to stand here and use the time I have to say ill things about my colleagues. I refuse to stoop to that level."
If he was willing to say that 3 years ago, then that suggests that it's an open secret that Max Miller was dangerous and yet it was just reduced to a casual jab on the House floor. No urgency to do anything about it. Just a easy little insult when the time calls for it. Santos could have, oh, I don't know, done something to protect this woman. But why do the hard work of protecting her when you can just use the alleged abusive behavior as a cheap cudel for a political jab? Am I right?
And maybe, just maybe, the dam might be breaking for even Republican voters. Bear in mind, Max Miller's seat in Ohio's 7th Congressional District has voted for Republicans in practically every race over the course of decades. Except now given Miller's scandal, he's actually down in polling which has his Democratic opponent Brian Point Dexter at 44% compared to Miller's 39%. In other words, perhaps electing the most depraved, shameless, dangerous, and corrupt people in America might at least start to have its downsides.
So, look, frankly, the entire situation is just really sad. It's sad that Max Miller is accused of committing legitimately reprehensible acts against his now ex-wife. It said that his wife's father, Bernie Mareno, in the Senate, only today managed to offer a single public word of condemnation. And it said that the president of the United States, the guy who should be able to jin up an ounce of human empathy, of course, instantly sides with the guy accused of abusive behavior instead of offering a single word, a modicum of sympathy for the victim. And this is the Republican party. This is the conservative movement today. These are these champions of family values. What the has happened to the right in this country? How does literally every person in the story other than the abuse victim managed to get this so wrong? So, I hope voters are paying attention because I refuse to normalize this behavior and this idea that character has no bearing on our politics or our lives. It does and it must. first and foremost because we need to make sure that dangerous, corrupt, predatory people are not serving as leaders paid for by our tax dollars while at the same time being a danger to our communities.
