Today, we are going to be doing vocabulary. Um, our target statement for today is: I can use newly acquired vocabulary expressively. Repeat after me: Identity, pursuit, cynic, defiance, consumed, descended, considered, disdain.
Our first word is identity. Looking at this child in the picture, he looks like he's holding a soccer ball, um, a trophy. It looks like he might play soccer. So this sentence is: "My love of sports is part of my identity." Can anyone raise their hand and tell me what they think identity might be? So identity is who you are. So again, in the picture, he's playing soccer. So we know that's a part of this child.
The next one is pursuit. In the picture, it looks like they're making some science thing, um, documenting it, maybe trying to get, um, what they need and struggling to get it, but they're working really hard. Right. So the sentence says: "In pursuit of the science fair trophy, we worked after school every day for a month." So they're working towards the science fair trophy, and they're working after school every day. So that seems like a lot of work. Um, what do you think pursuit might be? Pursuit means something you attempt to accomplish. So they're attempting, um, to win this trophy at the science fair. So they're working super hard at it.
Cynic. So in this picture, this girl looks kind of mad, kind of angry, kind of like she doesn't really know, right? She kind of just looks like, hm, well, you know. The sentence says: "Everyone was looking forward to the field trip, but as a cynic, Hannah was not so sure." So everyone's looking forward to this field trip, but Hannah's a cynic, so she's not so sure about this field trip. So what do you think cynic might mean if everyone's excited about a field trip, but Hannah is not? Cynic means someone who always expects bad things to happen. So everyone was looking forward to the field trip, but as a cynic, Hannah was not so sure. So she thought something bad was going to happen, or bad things are going to happen, and she's not so sure about going on this field trip.
Our next word is defiance. So looking at this picture, it looks like this, this kid is pulling the dog, and he's just not coming. What is going on? So the sentence says: "In an act of defiance, Buddy refused to come when I called him." So this is an act of defiance, and Buddy is not coming. So what do you think defiance means? Defiance means you know something is not allowed, but you do it anyways. So he is not coming, the dog is not going, and but it's still smelling the grass anyways. It knows it's supposed to go with its owner, but it's not going with him.
Consumed. So in the picture, it looks like they're eating some hot dogs, maybe some chicken wings, a little family hanging out, doing something. The sentence says: "On our picnic, we consumed some of our favorite foods." So what do we think consumed means? So they're on a picnic. They consumed some of their favorite foods. So if they consumed foods, what do you think they're doing with it? It's to eat something. So consumed means to eat something.
Descended. Okay. So it looks like in this picture, what do you think is happening in this picture? Okay. So someone's on a parachute. So when you're on a parachute, are you going up or are you going down? Okay. So he's getting closer and closer to the ground, it looks like. Right. The sentence says: "As the sky diver descended through the air, the open parachute looked like a beautiful rainbow." So he's descending through the air. What do you think descended means? It means to move downwards.
Our next vocabulary word is considered. What is this girl doing in the picture? Okay, it looks like she's thinking pretty hard, right? Maybe she's writing something, but she's she's in thought, right? Maybe even in deep, deep thought, right? So the sentence says: "Megan considered her words carefully as she wrote her research paper." What do we think considered means? So she's considering what she's saying in this research paper. So what do we think that means? It means you thought about it carefully.
Our last word is disdain. So it looks like a group of maybe soccer players are all joined together in this picture, but there's one person that's just not in there. And he kind of looks a little mad, right? He's got his head to the ground. All the people over here are super excited. So what do we think disdain means? Let's hear it in a sentence. "When losing a game, you should always congratulate your opponent instead of treating them with disdain." So if you're not congratulating them, what do you think, how do you think we're treating them if we're not congratulating them? So it's to act as if he or she is unimportant or not as good as you are. So you always need to congratulate them, right, and not treat them as if they're not as good as you.
Okay, our next, um, activity, we're going to act it out. So a word is going to come up on the board. You're going to pair up with your academic partner, and a word is going to show up on the board. You are going to have one minute to, um, decide what action you should do to help you remember that word. And each time we will pick the best one so that we can all remember our words and act it out together.
Our first word is identity. Okay. So remember identity is who you are. So you have one minute. Go. Okay. So I like this, this movement the best. So we every time we hear identity, we are going to do this movement. Everyone do it with me. Identity. Identity. Amazing.
Our next word is pursuit. Hey, you have one minute to discuss. What does pursuit mean? Can someone tell me what pursuit means? To try and accomplish something. Right. Okay. So go ahead and have one minute and decide what you want the action to be. Awesome. I love this action, um, the best. So every time we hear pursuit, we're going to do this. Okay, ready? Pursuit. Pursuit. Pursuit. Amazing.
Okay, our next word is cynic. Remember, if you're a cynic, you always think something bad is going to happen. Okay, you'll have one minute to decide what action we should do for cynic. Go. Awesome. I love the way this group showed cynic. So every time we as a class hear cynic, we are going to do this movement. Okay, everyone practice with me. Cynic. Cynic. Cynic. Cynic. Amazing.
Okay, moving on. Okay, our next word is defiance. Okay, defiance means that you're supposed to do some, when you know you're supposed to do something, but you don't do it, right? Okay, so everyone take a minute and figure out what movement they think is best for defiance. Go. Awesome. I love this group's action for defiance. So every time we hear defiance, we're going to do this action. Okay, everyone do it with me. Ready? Defiance. Defiance. Defiance. Defiance. Amazing.
Okay, our next word, consumed. Everyone take a minute. Remember, consumed means to eat something. So remember, consumed is to eat something. So you have one minute to work with your partner. Ready, set, go. Awesome. I love the way this group did consumed. So every time we see the word consumed, we are going to do this action. Are you ready? Consumed. Consumed. Consumed. Okay, our next word is descended. Remember, descended means to go downwards. Everyone listen, descended means to go downwards. So you have one minute to figure out what you think the best movement would be for this one. Ready, set, go. Awesome job. I love the way that this group did descended. So just like the sentences I gave you with our vocabul, vocabulary word in it, you're going to create a new vocabulary word with your partner and act it out together. Um, there are sentence stems available at the back table to help start you out on your sentences. Um, and you'll have 15 minutes. Ready, set, go.
