This is the Mossberg [Music] 990, and I suck shooting it. So, the Mossberg 990 is essentially a Mossberg 940 in saw-off shotgun form. Now, I know this technically isn't a saw-off shotgun, but what it is, is a 940 with a barrel cut down and this little doohickey grip, which literally makes it a sawoff shotgun. Not literally, because you would actually saw off a shotgun. I'm getting pedantic, but either way, I know most of y'all are familiar with the Shockwave. And the Shockwave, to me, is one of the coolest, arguably useless platforms on the market.
I know. I'm just, I'm just letting all the screams and the yells of horror stop so I can get to the point. No. All right. So, this is basically a semi-automatic shock. It's, it's a semi-automatic shock wave is what it is. And it's cool as [ __ ]. It's cool. Like, anytime somebody sees something like this, cuz this is actually considered an other. And that's what makes it cool also, cuz you would see this and you would think, "That's got to be super regulated by the ATF, and I got to fill out all this paperwork and all these forms." When in reality, no, cuz it's considered an other. It's not. It's not a pistol. It's not a shotgun. It's not a rifle. It's just an other simply because it has this on the end of it. So stupid. I don't understand it. I mean, I do understand it. It's stupid bureaucracy, whatever the case may be. So, but that aspect of it makes it cool because that means you can just go and buy it just like it is, and you can take it home. You don't have to do all that extra stuff. That's one cool factor.
The other cool factor is, I don't know, Americans are just obsessed with saw off shotguns, and I think it has a lot to do with movies and entertainment, cuz we've seen them so many times, and the things they do with these things is utterly [ __ ] ridiculous. But at the end of the day, even shooting these things, there's something swaggy about shooting from the hip. Whether it's a shotgun, whether it's a Tommy gun, doesn't matter. It's just swaggy. What? Swaggy. What? Swaggy. What? Swaggy. What? Swaggy. What? Swaggy. What? Swaggy.
Now, the problem with it is, I don't shoot it very well. And if I'm going to be honest, I don't think most people shoot this thing very well because it is a hard gun to shoot. But before we get into all the philosophies behind this gun and so forth, I can do a whole another video on it. Let's just talk about this a little bit more. The most important aspect of this 990 is going to be the grip. You have a shitty grip on this thing, this gun is going to super suck to shoot. Now, visually, this gun is kind of intimidating when you see it, cuz you don't know what to expect because, you know, yes, it's cool. We love it, but from a shooting perspective, we all know it's going to kind of suck, cuz this is going to take the brunt force of the, of the, of the recoil sensation. So, this is important. So, you basically kind of have this, you got this polymer plastic, but then you have this soft rubbery texture up here, which actually makes a huge difference because what it does is, the polymer gives you the grip, and then the rubber gives you the cushion, right? And then, of course, we got this little handle right here, this little nylon handle that's literally screwed into, into the actual shotgun itself. But the funny thing is, is you see this handle and you think, "Oh, it's a pump shotgun." But it's not. Even when I get into it, I automatically my brain wants to go, pump shotgun, pump shotgun. But it's not. What it's doing is stopping you from possibly shooting your freaking, freaking hand off, cuz you don't, what you don't want is under recoil for it to slide forward and then get in front of the barrel. And if you're shooting consecutive shots, it can get, it can get a little interesting. Uh, so from here, as you can see, I just want you to watch what this hand is doing here, and it'll show you why this is so necessary. So, as you come here, and I'm inevitably at some point, your hand's going to start riding forward. Um, now I exaggerated it ever so slightly, but more or less that tends to, that ends up happening. And this is going to be your most powerful position when you're shooting this gun, is here. The problem is, is it's a balancing act. Here is less accurate. Here is more accurate. But you can probably see where I'm getting at now, right? Yes.
But about that, the beautiful thing about this gun is, it doesn't recoil to the extent that you think it does. And that's the thing, cuz visually it seems intimidating. It's like, it's already intimidating with a, with a shock wave when you rack it, and you're like, "Okay, this is, this is going to, this is going to hurt." But it doesn't. Here, same thing. It's semi-auto, but the recoil impulse on this gun is not that bad. So, even though, and I'll, I'll demonstrate in a minute, even shooting from here, you're not horribly in danger of busting yourself in the face the way you think you are, even one-handed. And I'll demonstrate it here. Let's start with shooting it how you might intuitively. There's two kind of intuitive ways that you want to shoot this gun, here, and then here. Because naturally, especially if you're used to shooting rifles, you're going to want to see that sight. So, initially, even seeing this, just seeing the gun is intimidating. It, it is. I'm not going to lie to you. However, when you actually go to shoot it, it's not that bad. Now, if you're here with it, that's a different story. You don't get pummeled in the face, but if you do that, you're an idiot.
Now, the other way to shoot it is one-handed. Even now, I'm kind of anxious about it because I'm like, even though I've done it already off camera, I'm still kind of anxious about it. But we've all seen it in movies where somebody comes up. And the thing is about short, about saw off shotguns, the us shorter, but nonetheless, you see them come up one-handed. It's not that bad. It's unwieldy. It's not, it's not practical because you got to hold this thing one-handed, but it's not. And you're probably only going to get one, maybe two shots off. And you can call me, "Oh, you're a little weak." All right, cool. I'll take it, cuz it is what it is. I'm sorry. I don't think you're going to get more than one or two shots off one-handed. However, like I said, from here, it's almost nothing. It's, it's actually really fun. But if you notice something, 10, yeah, about 15, 15 yards, and you're hearing a lot of misses. Hearing a lot of misses because I miss a lot with this thing. Now, granted, I'm, I'm pushing the extent to which this gun was designed. And this gun wasn't designed for these distances. This gun was designed for like, so about here is where you want to be distance-wise. And even this is slightly, ever so slightly pushing. I call this, this is a room clearer. This is like a, like back in call a trench gun. Got a, what else? Like you could make this a truck gun. But these distance here, like, get the [ __ ] out of my room. Get the [ __ ] out of my, get the [ __ ] away from my truck. Those are the distance. Anything that makes you think, get the [ __ ] away, that's what this is, right? This is the shotgun equivalent of the get the [ __ ] off me guns, like the Ruger LCP 380s and stuff like that, just in shotgun form. So, think about it. Like I said, from these distances, things change considerably. It's here, right? And even then, to a certain degree, you still got to think about where you're aiming. You have to understand where your natural point of aim is on a gun like this. Which is why I think if you're going to do something like this, you might want to think about investing in a laser. Sharks with freaking laser beams attached to their heads. And I don't, I don't really ever say that about a particular gun, cuz sometimes I think lasers above and beyond night vision are kind of gimmicky. However, with something like this, I think, I think it makes total sense. I think a laser light combo with something like this would work perfect. And I think they make some that are that will allow you to run the gun without interfering with what's going on, without interfering with what's going on up here, and have it back here where you can actuate it, have the laser, see exactly where you're pointing at, pull trigger, and you're good to go.
Like I, I, I said it's very fun to shoot, but that's not really true. It's just so cool to shoot, I think, is the best way to put it. Something about it that no matter what, it just makes shooting, shooting it feel really cool. I love this. Just the sheer, the, the, just the sheer force that this, which is interesting because recoil-wise, it's not really bad, but when you see it hit the target, you truly kind of understand the devastation that a shotgun round actually has and what it can do. Now, one of the curses that comes with the gift of fun that this is, is it doesn't hold that many rounds. I mean, it holds what? Five plus one, maybe. Well, let's find out. One, two, three, four, five, six. Yeah, six. 5 plus one, which isn't horrible considering what you get off, what you get from it. You get maneuverability. It's incredibly light. Um, yeah, that's about it. That's about it. You get six rounds to do what you got to do. But like again, like I said, it's a, this is a get off me shotgun. That's what this is. More so than even the shockwave because now it's semi, which I think makes it even cooler, which actually makes it more practical if you ask me. Because with the, with the semi, the, the boom boom. Yeah, I guess it's more dramatic. It's more theatrical. But this, this, this makes sense.
Now, the other part of my brain goes, I want to turn this into an SPS. Basically, can add a pistol grip. You, you can take this off and add a little grip with a little stock. You got your little SPS action going on there. That, that to me is what I want to do. But then that completely kills the uniqueness of this platform. So, there's that. So, what I think I'm going to do is, I'm going to try to make this thing as practical as possible. And by practical, what I mean is, I'm going to probably add a, I'm going to add a laser to it. And I'm also going to probably put a rail because you, it is drilled and tapped. So you can add a rail on here. So you can put a red dot if you want to. So if I wanted to go this route, I could do it this route. Put a little, put a little red dot action on up there. Technically, if you really want to be honest, take this, put a rail on it, put a, put a red dot, one of the bigger red dots on a riser so that you don't have to actually bring it up to face as much. So, you can just be here. Yeah, I think that'll work. I think that'll work. But there you have it. See, Mossberg 990, the semi-automatic saw off shotgun. It's not technically sought off, but then technically that's what a saw off shotgun is. Peter's shaking his head. Yeah, that is what it is. That's what a saw off is. A saw off is literally saw off. Yeah, I understand that. And I said that. I made account for that. I said it's not actually a saw off shotgun. So technically it's not a saw off, but in theory it is. But you said technically. Technically you said technically. Well, technically I said technically twice. So technically it's not a saw off, but technically it is kind of the equivalent of a saw off. I've got the tape. You did.
