The question is basically, what information is Facebook collecting, who are they sending it to, and whether they ask for consent.
This is Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, which eventually turned into Meta. This company owns the three most important social media applications: Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. And this is what he looks like, drinking water, as a result of the stress he experienced after these questions. And these questions, my sweet friend, were from a hearing, as they say, conducted by the American Senate with the CEO of Meta, or Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. They were discussing several topics, including accusations leveled against Facebook that you, Facebook, are violating user privacy, obtaining data from them like name, date of birth, home address, where you studied high school, where you studied university, and so on. And you take this information and sell it to companies for advertising purposes, and you make a lot of money from this. And the companies also benefit by targeting their advertising campaigns to the exact segment they want.
This, my dear, is one of the harms that can happen to us from sharing our personal data on social media applications or with many companies. This is one of the harms. There are much bigger harms than this, my sweet. Much bigger and more dangerous. Today, awareness is being shaped for communities using social media programs. This is a gateway that will lead you into another world that we must touch upon one day and explain. Many books talk about shaping public awareness, like the book "The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind" by Gustave Le Bon, which we will explain in detail on the channel in the future. Or we will talk about Edward Bernays, the founder of modern propaganda, which he called public relations. We will talk about this huge, big, very dangerous world that has truly, truly affected generations and changed generations, and shaped awareness and dangerous intellectual trends.
Anyway, let's put all that aside. This, my dear, is Meta, which is Facebook. So, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. And as I told you, these are the three most important and most used applications on social media in the world. For example, if you do a search, you'll go to Shopify. And Shopify is a company responsible for e-commerce stores. I think you've heard of it. Shopify released statistics for the most used social media programs in the first quarter of 2024, this year we are living in, and may God grant us and you long life, God willing.
Facebook was in first place, as usual, of course, dominating the scene. Then comes YouTube in second place. And let's skip YouTube for a bit. In third place comes Instagram, and in fourth place comes WhatsApp. Why did I tell you to skip YouTube? Because until recently, YouTube was not considered, and still is not considered by many, a social media application. Yes, it is a modern media application, but it remains not a social media application. Of course, Google is trying to turn it into a social media application, but it still remains today like a modern media television. So, if we exclude YouTube, the three most important and most used applications in the world for social media are all owned by Meta, or formerly Facebook, which is owned by Mark Zuckerberg. This privacy, my sweet friend, we unfortunately share a lot of our personal data by choice on these applications, on social media applications. And of course, there are very beautiful experiments on YouTube that they did on a group of random people in the public. Someone comes and says, "Hello, what's your first name and last name?" Or "Follow us on Facebook, and we'll give you a free cup of coffee." And from there, they start writing on the cup of coffee a lot of data that he shared on his account: his mother's name, his father's name, where he lives, his aunt's name, his uncle's name, the newborn they just had, and so on. So they write his data on the cup that he didn't share with them. When he comes to receive the cup and looks at it and reads the writing, he is completely shocked. He comes out astonished, "How did they get this information?"
And the same experiment was done by the esteemed Professor Ahmed Al-Shugairi on the program "Khawater." He also met people in the street and would say, for example, "What's your name? What's your family name?" And that person would reply, "My name is so-and-so." Then he would say, "Okay. And you have a team in the van who searches by first and last name on Facebook. Then, if they can't find the profile or his page, they tell Ahmed, through the earpiece, to ask him about his age or, for example, when he was born." So he would say, "What year were you born?" He would say, "I was born in 1993." "Excellent." Then the team in the van searches, "So-and-so, born in 1993." Boom, they found him. They go to Facebook and start looking at his private data. Then Professor Ahmed Al-Shugairi begins to say, "And how is your uncle, so-and-so?" That person is shocked, "How did you know my uncle?" Then he says, "How did you know my school? How did you know my university?" And so on. Then he starts to get scared, feeling that Ahmed Al-Shugairi is a detective or something. And indeed, some of them are very upset. "How did you get this private information?" In the end, Ahmed says, "Well, you shared it, my dear, on Facebook or, for example, Instagram, and left it public. Therefore, we know this information, and you gave us access to it."
Of course, there are people who, if you don't know, use something called social engineering. This is also a big, beautiful gateway that I might do a special episode about in the future. But what I want you to know is that we share this data. And the data that we share without awareness, like wearing this watch that I'm wearing. Today, I'm filming this episode. Of course, the point is that the matter piqued my interest greatly, so I wanted to know more about what data it is also recording about me. So I went to an application on the iPhone called the Health app. As soon as you enter the app, this message appears, and they tell you, "Apple, do you want to share data with Apple or not?" Of course, I immediately press "No" and pray to God that they are honest in preserving my privacy. Of course. But I want to show you how this watch even knows when I'm awake and when I'm asleep, deep sleep, or half-deep sleep, or REM sleep. The matter is very, very interesting, my sweet friend. There is deep sleep, and this is my share of deep sleep. They call it light sleep here in the app, "Core Sleep." And this also has two types of sleep. As for my last share, it is from dream sleep, and they call it REM sleep. Of course, above this is the number of times I woke up. And honestly, last night I had many nightmares, which is why my wakefulness was much more frequent than usual, one or two dashes. And this is the number of hours I slept, and this is the number of hours I stayed in bed. So, out of the eight hours and seven minutes I was in bed, I slept for eight hours and one minute. Yes, how did the watch know my sleep pattern like this? Through the electrodes that I told you about, the electrical conductor or the electrical conductor. So, Matthew Walker says, "The science of sleep, with these electrical electrodes, we discovered many great things and made great progress. But the real breakthrough happened at the beginning and dawn of the 21st century, from the year 2000, when the science of sleep began to use brain imaging scanners, or what we call MRI. And we no longer just know the types of sleep, but we know the areas of the brain that are activated and the areas of the brain that are not activated in the five types of sleep. And we also know what is going on in the mind of that dreamer. You, while you are dreaming, they do an MRI, and they know what you dreamed about before you even tell them what you dreamed about. Wow, how does this happen? Let me tell you. In 2013, in Kyoto, Japan, a group of scientists formed a research team and were studying sleep. So they conducted a clinical experiment. Matthew Walker says it threatens danger in the future. He says, "This experiment, ethically, may be a big problem in the future." Why? Because the experiment, in its simplest form, is that they brought three people, and they did MRI scans on them. And while they were recording the MRI, they showed them many pictures: a car, a house, money, an airplane, a woman, an elderly person, a young person, a pen, a phone, and many other things, animals, areas, many natural things, many diverse pictures. And they were watching which part of the brain was activated when they showed this picture. If they showed a picture of a man, this part was activated. If they showed a picture of a woman, this part was activated. If they showed them a cat, this part was activated. A lion, this part is different. A bird, this part is activated, and so on. After showing tens, hundreds of pictures to these people, they let them sleep. And while they were sleeping, they were scanning their brains with MRI and recording the areas of the brain that were activated during sleep, especially dream sleep. So, he says, after several days, they collected a large amount of data and brought these participants and asked them, "What did you dream about today?" And they started asking them about their dreams. "What did you dream about today?" "Well, I dreamed that I saw an elderly person riding a car. I don't know where they went to the pool." Whatever it was, they gave them details of this dream. Then they compared his brain during this dream with his brain when he saw similar pictures to what he saw in the dream. He saw, for example, an elderly person in the dream. They go and look at his brain's activity during sleep and his brain's activity when he was awake and saw an elderly person. They notice that the same part of the brain is activated. And indeed, they confirmed that the brain scan during a dream truly matches the brain scan during wakefulness. He says, and after several additional days, they stopped asking the man about his dream. They would say, "Listen, you just dreamed about this and this and this and this." Of course, they don't know the details. For example, when they say an elderly person, they don't know who this person is. The dreamer knows, but they tell him, "You dreamed of an elderly person, and you dreamed of a car, and you dreamed, for example, that it was daytime, and you dreamed of... something." Imagine, like that. So, he says, Matthew Walker says, "This experiment was applied to three people with the devices available today. So what if science progresses in the future?" He says, "We expect that we might even know who the people are and what things they saw in the dream." Imagine, and then apply that to applications we use a lot, like this. It might reach a stage where, with artificial intelligence, it knows this data that we don't want to share with anyone. In other words, privacy is crying in the corner.

Anyway, this was the great breakthrough in the science of dreams. And of course, Matthew Walker, from 2000 to 2010, was studying dreams. But my job, guys, is to see if dreams have a benefit or not. So he discovered that dreams have two great benefits. One we will discuss in this video, and the other we will discuss in the next video, God willing. Maybe I'll combine them for you in one episode. I don't know. Let's see. Before sleep science advanced significantly due to the use of electrodes, they used to see brain activity and could differentiate between types of sleep. Good, good. They discovered many things, of course. But the problem they faced was that they didn't know which part of the brain was activated during sleep. Okay, they see waves, but they don't know where they are coming from. Then came the MRI, and it started telling them which areas are activated in the brain during sleep or the five different stages of sleep. What they noticed in dream sleep is that the moment you start dreaming, four areas of the brain are activated, and one area of the brain is completely reduced. He says when we look at the brain after MRI, we find this area is completely blue. That is, literally, its activity level is zero. What are these four areas, or five areas, let's say? The first area is the visual spatial areas. It's logical, you're seeing in the dream, so the visual areas are activated. Second, the motor cortex, and this is also logical. You move in the dream, so the motor cortex is activated. The third area is the hippocampus. And we've talked about it before. The area responsible for storing new memories and the area responsible for temporary memories. Good. The fourth area is the deep emotional centers in the brain. This, my dear friend, is activated more than its activity during your waking hours. Imagine, and by 30%. That's why this area is very important, and it's what we'll talk about for the first benefit of dreams. So, pay close attention to it, God bless you. As for the fifth area, which is completely reduced, it is the rational thinking areas, called the cerebral cortex. And this also has a very big role in what we are about to talk about now. But I have a small digression. Don't you notice that the visual areas are activated at the moment of the dream, and the motor cortex is also activated with them? That means you see and move in the dream, but despite this, you don't move in bed. Yes, why? Because the dream comes with an extra gift, which is sleep paralysis. The paralysis associated with dreams. Of course, it's temporary paralysis, and it has a scientific name. The temporary paralysis associated with dreams, its scientific name is "Al-Jathoom." No, I'm kidding, I'm kidding with you. They simply call it sleep paralysis. The sleep scientists, in terms of names, don't bother themselves. But indeed, many of us call it "Al-Jathoom," which is when you wake up and your body is still paralyzed, so you see what's around you, you hear them, but you can't move. Of course, it feels like a long time, even though it's very short, but the glitch that happens here is that it's supposed to end sleep paralysis as soon as the dream ends and you wake up. But sometimes there's a mix-up, so you wake up and sleep paralysis doesn't end, so you feel paralyzed. And this is what we call "Al-Jathoom." So it's not "Al-Jathoom" or a jinn, rest assured. It's just a normal medical condition. But why does it feel long, and why do you feel like you've been paralyzed for maybe fifteen minutes, even though it hasn't exceeded 15 seconds, or maybe even less? This also has an explanation. In an experiment they did on rats, a group of rats. They would take a rat and let it enter a new maze for the first time. And they would record its brain activity through electrodes. After that, when the rat sleeps, they would also record its brain activity during sleep. So, from this large group, there were rats on whom they noticed something amazing, which is that their brain activity when they were in the maze resembled their brain activity when they were asleep. So they knew that their dreams were replaying the maze experience and reliving it. So this is the first thing they noticed. That's why they knew that the hippocampus, or the memory, is activated during dreams. The second point is that they noticed that the shape of these waves is not exactly the same as their shape during wakefulness. They noticed that they are stretched. So, if the waves were like this, then during sleep, their shape is stretched. And this is what explains the distortion of time during sleep. So, in a dream, you might live for hours, but in reality, it doesn't exceed 15 seconds. But because the shape of the wave is stretched, you feel that time is stretched. So, the memory areas are activated, and the MRI told us that the emotional areas are also activated during dream periods. Not only that, but they are activated by 30% more than during your waking hours. The matter requires concentration. So, he says, what they noticed is that the human mind, God be praised, not only replays memories during dreams, but replays the emotional feelings you experienced while awake and are linked with memories. So you have dreams, but they are accompanied by emotions that make you very sad, or even very scared, or very worried. Any kind of emotion that comes to your mind. Good, good. He says the human mind, during sleep, especially dream sleep, when it replays memories, tries to separate the emotional connections from these memories. Ah, what does this mean? Let me tell you something. If you go through a very shocking experience, let's say you lose a loved one. When you sleep, your mind will do one of two things, or both. It will replay these memories, which are the painful experience, and it will replay the emotional feelings associated with them. And it will keep repeating this to you until it separates all the emotional feelings from these memories. So, the experience, for example, when it happened to you, it made you very sad and hurt you greatly. So, after several dreams that repeat to you regarding this matter, the emotional connection to them is broken. So, when you recall the memories, you don't recall the same painful emotional feelings. Wow, wow, wow, on this information. The situations that made us sad in the past no longer make us sad today. Some of them we laugh at. Imagine, do you realize? So, either it makes you completely sad, or it even makes you laugh at it, or it makes you sad, but to a much lesser extent than at the moment it happened. See the great blessing. It's not possible for you, as a human being, to want to move forward in life and continue, and these memories, every time you recall them, affect you emotionally. It makes you cry, or get angry, or worry, or whatever. So this is the first and most important function of dreams. That's why he says, if you've gone through any emotionally difficult experience, you must sleep. And listen, you must get enough dream sleep. Because even if the memories don't come back to you, their emotions and feelings will. So you might have dreams that have nothing to do with the person you lost or that situation, for example. But you will have dreams that evoke the same emotional feelings that this situation evoked. And after a period of time, the brain separates them, God be praised. So, even if the memories come back to you, the same emotions won't come back. That's why the rational thinking areas are greatly weakened at the moment of [Music] dreams.
Well, we dream for at least several different reasons. One key benefit is creativity. Sleep, including dream sleep, is associated with enhanced creativity. Next, anxiety, sadness, anger, embarrassment. The sleeping mind often takes us to places we fear. These are called nightmares.
And of course, Matthew Walker recounts when he discovered this. As I mentioned, he started studying dreams in 2000. So, he says, at that time, I noticed this matter and published a scientific paper that claims that dreams, especially dream sleep, separate emotional feelings from memories, whether painful or otherwise. He says, but I faced a problem. I only have a scientific paper. I need clinical trials on people to turn the matter from a scientific paper into a real-world study. Of course, a study requires cost, requires money. So, he says, I was waiting for this opportunity. One day, it happened by chance. He says, I went to Seattle, USA. He says, so I met a scientist, one of the most famous scientists in the field of sleep, who treats PTSD. And this disease affects those who return from wars, military personnel, and they have recurring, constant nightmares that make them hate the moment they go to sleep. Of course, this is a well-known disease, and I think you've heard of it to some extent. Anyway, he says, we sat down and talked. He says, so I told him that I have a scientific paper. This paper claims that dreams, and especially dream sleep, separate emotional feelings from memories, whether painful or otherwise. And he says, I started telling him about the experiment I did. He says, when I presented the research, I brought a group of students and showed them emotionally charged pictures. That is, pictures that, when you see them, you are emotionally disturbed, whether they are sad, terrifying, frightening, disturbing, or make you feel anger, or love, or whatever. So, he says, we showed a large group of pictures to these students. Then we divided the students into two groups. One group we kept awake, and the other group we let sleep for exactly eight hours. After eight hours of sleep, they woke up, and the two groups met again after 12 hours of the experiment. These were awake for 12 hours, and these slept for eight hours out of these 12 hours. Then, he says, we showed them the same pictures that we showed them 12 hours ago. We noticed that the group that did not sleep had the same emotional feelings repeated in their brains without the slightest change. Imagine, completely as if they were seeing them for the first time. And some of them were even more affected. As for the group that slept, their emotional response to these pictures decreased by 30%. Imagine, my beautiful friend. The matter is terrifying. Anyway, he says, I told him the story of the experiment. He says, and I presented my research, but unfortunately, I need clinical trials. He says, so he asked me, "You need them? Why didn't you do the research and do an experiment and confirm the same claims?" So why do you need clinical trials? He says, "No, no, no. I need clinical trials because there is a more important point." He says, "What is it?" I said, "There is a hormone called norepinephrine, not adrenaline. Norepinephrine." He says, "This hormone is responsible for reactions, nervous system activity, and is responsible for stress." He says, "I noticed, Dr. So-and-so, that when people sleep, especially during dream sleep, this hormone completely decreases in them. Therefore, their brains, when they replay memories, separate them from the deep emotional centers in the brain and don't face any difficulty." He says, "Okay, good." He says, "But I noticed that in some people, the levels of this norepinephrine hormone do not decrease during dreams." He says, "When this hormone does not decrease, their brains become incapable of separating emotional feelings from these memories." He says, "Okay, then." He says, "What happens is that the dream replays these memories over and over again. It tries to find the right moment when this hormone is low so it can separate these emotional connections from the memories." This, he says, explains why nightmares sometimes recur for a long time in a person who is stressed. His dream, poor thing, tries to help him and separate the memories, but the norepinephrine hormone causes a big obstacle. And so they enter this cycle that makes nightmares recur. He says, "God, God, this is a beautiful idea." He says, "Exactly. So I need clinical trials to confirm these claims." So he said, "Listen, my mission is to treat PTSD, which is the recurring nightmares of American soldiers returning from war." He says, "I noticed in many of them that when they returned to my clinic, they told me, 'Doctor, my nightmares have disappeared. They no longer recur.' And I am very happy about this." He says, "Of course, all my life I've heard this from them, and because I didn't know why." He says, "So he suggested to me, he said, 'What do you think we should look at the composition of this treatment? Maybe it really has an effect on the norepinephrine matter.'" He says, "And indeed, my beautiful friend, we checked the composition of the treatment and discovered that the soldier who takes this treatment, yes, his blood pressure decreases, but his norepinephrine also decreases." He says, "And this is what made them experience nightmares for a short period, and then they stopped completely." What made the nightmares stop is that when the dreams recurred to separate emotions or emotional feelings, the norepinephrine was low, so these dreams separated them, and these nightmares no longer bothered them. He says, "And indeed, I was overjoyed. I gathered the papers, and we gathered all the citations, drug compositions, and so on, and submitted this study. And indeed, it was approved. Not only that, but this treatment was also approved for use in solving the problem of PTSD, which is recurring nightmares in American soldiers." Of course, it's not necessarily soldiers who get it, but most who get it are American soldiers. Of course, what does he tell you? He says, "When we thought about why American soldiers are most affected, we noticed that during the war, they are fighting, and every day one of them loses a friend, or kills someone, or other very ugly situations." He says, "We noticed that during that period, they don't sleep well. Most soldiers in the world don't sleep well because it's a period of war." He says, "And when they don't sleep well, their brains are not able to release these emotions at that moment, let alone the quality of sleep and the poor quality of sleep, and so on." So, he says, that's why he says, most who get it are soldiers. Of course, not just American soldiers, but soldiers in most countries of the world. And by the way, PTSD, when it's recorded in history, they discover that it has existed for hundreds of thousands of years and that warriors have indeed suffered from it. So this is the first benefit of dreams. Try, my sweet friend, to sleep. Some people say, "Nasser, we've had many experiences that caused us anxiety, sadness, and stress. And some say we've reached the stage of obsessions, let alone endless nightmares." And many people complain about this, and I know it firsthand. So my advice to them, in the simplest terms, is to sleep. Sleep well, my sweet friend. Sleep a good, complete sleep, my beautiful friend. And when we are talking in this episode about dream sleep, we are talking about the last hours of sleep in which dreams are activated, as I showed you. Of course, yes, you will notice that dream sleep recurs, as it appeared to me in the watch. And most dreams, by the way, we forget. Incidentally, some people say, "Nasser, I don't dream." No, you dream, but you forget it. Because a person forgets 99.99% of dreams. I gave you a percentage just to show you how much they forget. And indeed, this is what Matthew Walker says in the book. He didn't give a percentage, but he says we literally forget most dreams. He says we hardly remember anything except the strong ones, or perhaps the last ones, which are in the last hours before we wake up. So, the point is, yes, you will see dream sleep recurring, but its quantity is more in the last hour and a half. It's the largest share of dream sleep. So, it means you have to ensure a full night's sleep to reach that last hour and a half, and indeed, it will help you get rid of many, many, many things that have an emotional and affective impact on you. Your boss is bothering you, your spouse is annoying you, your children are annoying you, your friends are upsetting you, your neighbors are upsetting you, situations are stressing you out. It's possible they're not even people. It could be events and situations causing you anxiety, causing you stress. Sleep, my beautiful friend, sleep, my wanderer. By God, God has placed these blessings in our lives, and among these blessings is sleep. And one of these blessings of sleep is that we get rid of these emotional feelings associated with memories. This is a blessing, a therapeutic blessing. You don't need therapy sessions to that extent, but rather, I will say it clearly. If you are a normal person, yes, you don't need any psychological clinics. We have treatment, praise be to God, in many things. One of them is sleep, or one of them is dream sleep. This is the first benefit. As for the second benefit, it is creativity. Do you want to be creative? Do you want to invent things? Do you want to come up with new things? Do you want to be unique? Some people, like me, when I do something, I like to be creative with it. I don't like it to be ordinary. I want it to be unique, different, special, just as I am a special person, for example. In the entire history of humanity, there is only one Nasser, Nasser Al-Aqeel. I speak. There is only one Nasser Al-Aqeel. I am unique, and you are too. There are no two copies of you, neither in the past nor will there be in the future. The same goes for me, especially in creative matters. I want to be creative.
