Well, hey, um, you guys mean a lot to me. You guys mean a lot to Randy. You guys mean a lot to men who are connected here at Beltway. But, you know, we may be talking to people here today that aren't familiar with our church, or from wherever. So, uh, we're just going to continue a conversation that we had with the podcast that was out. But really, not just the podcast, but it was about things we've been dealing in with the Lord in the last season of all of our lives. And I know that there's unity in this conversation. So, um, but let's introduce ourselves. Uh, we've got Rodney Ritter from Abilene. He'd say North Abilene, Texas, for Abilene, Texas. Uh, Rodney, by traits, a plumber. He's a dad. He's a husband. We have Randy Reese. Randy was the men's pastor at Beltway Park for, uh, for 15, 13 years officially, but was around here for 17. He's, you know, he, he's a, a weathered leader of men here. Is that the right? Is that a good way? Yeah, absolutely. Weathered. And, uh, Chuck Smith is a great friend of mine as well. Chuck's, um, a leader here at Beltway Park and is also a dad and a husband. And these guys are just involved in a lot of things with what we do with men, but not just that, but with marriages, families. But the, the core of this is spiritual fathering, sonship, and, you know, what does that mean to each one of us? We, we, you guys remember we're all in that meeting when Randy was retiring and I was stepping into this role. My name is Zach Vassar. I'm the men's Pastor here at Beltway Park. And, uh, we had this epiphany, thanks to Rodney Hogue, of what you've been doing is fathering men, and we've been huge beneficiaries of that, or however you'd say that. And so I just want to start with that. Like, speak into each one of you guys, maybe tell a story or a way that Randy's impacted your life. And maybe it was in a specific, I know you don't like this, don't, don't tell stories, but at least not some of them. Maybe it's a specific time or something, or a way that that he's meant something to you in your life. So, who wants to go first? Go ahead.

I met Randy. My first boot camp was in 2013. Um, didn't know Randy much from there. We were just kind of getting back into church. I'd lost my dad way back when, and didn't even know that I was looking for any kind of dad. But Randy will suck you in by saying, "Hey, let's go get lunch." Yeah. And that's when the hook is presented, and then it launches when you usually take the bait. And I'm not really sure when I got knee-deep in all this, he just kind of reeled it in. But he was calling me into things that I would have never done, and he put me in places. I've called him a few colorful names for things that he's pulled me into. Um, but every bit of that helped me grow. And when the relationship started really developing through Re-Engage, is when we really first started knowing each other, right? And, um, just working together to Re-Engage, and he pulled me in, and I didn't even know that I was being pulled in, but he was calling me up like a good dad would. Yeah. And I had a great dad. My dad was a good, good guy. He loved me, and there was no hardness in that relationship. But when that was taken, the pride in me was like, I've had the best, I don't need anything else. Father God knew way better than I did that I'd, what I was, wasn't even looking for, he knew I needed, and he placed Randy in that place. So he's one of my best friends, but he's also a spiritual dad to me, and my life has been just the better for it ever since. And there's, I don't know, that's just where we're at right now. Yeah.

So we've done something, and I can speak to this one thing that that I've seen happen as a result of that is there's been a true inheritance of this in that not only have you been fathered, so to speak, by Randy over seasons of life, but you've stepped in and become a father to some, some men. You know? Absolutely. And maybe it starts out as a brother, or maybe with like, y'all heard Rodney mention boot camp. With that, you know, that's where we get guys in small groups and they really get to know each other, and through that, these relationships take shape. And also Re-Engage, you know? And then through the pursuing of these things. And so, you know, that that same thing is beginning to happen in your life. And I know that's, you know, it's a, it's a great, it's a great responsibility. But it becomes a pressure. Maybe talk about that pressure. And then Chuck, you talk to us about your impact by Randy, but just talk about, you know, what, when a guy calls you a spiritual dad, man, like, what does that feel? What does that do?

Oh, it is, uh, immediately and all along the way, incredibly humbling. My first antique instinct is that I want to say, "I'm not sure you want to do that. I've got so many flaws. You'd be shocked to know, probably." And certainly, previous, my previous first 50 years of my life was was not what it needed to be at all. And so, it usually, I have to overcome that in the first few seconds. And then, "Okay, Lord, I told you I'll do what you want me to do. And if this is going to go that direction, and you want this relationship to to be something more than just an acquaintance, then okay." Um, I'll, I'll listen as best as I can. Yeah.

Well, Chuck, you know, I was, I've been thinking, um, a couple of days. You asked the question the other day about Randy and all of my memories of meeting Randy make me really wonder why you ever saw anything in me. I mean, in all honesty, the same thing I've wondered about y'all too. Also, I, uh, that the first few times that I remember meeting you, there was a, a Chuck that was so full of pride and chasing after something that was, um, what I thought I could attain on my own. And for some reason, you, you took that person, and you let me be that. You let me learn that lesson on my own. But, but in the meantime, you, you allowed me to fail and and come to a place that the Lord was able to use me. And then you called me up to what I thought I wanted, but the Lord knew that I needed to be. And I don't know how that works. I, I think that that's, you know, one of the things that we've talked about in this, the fathering thing, is it's being able to see everyone where they're at and and love them in a place that that they're at. And I think that when I think about you, I think about how exactly you did that. Because me coming to you full of pride, saying, "I need to be on this, and I need, I want to do this, and I see myself as this." And instead of you just saying, "Go away," um, I don't, you, you just dismissed it, but you did it in a loving way. And then you came back to me and called me up into the areas. And like Rodney said, you know, there's, there's these, these, "Let's have lunch." And he told the story last night about us sitting at the shed in 2020. And, you know, we didn't know that the world was about to stop. But that you looked at me and said, "I think you would be a great boot camp director." And he said, the look on my face was, "You're a crazy old man." But, but that's the thing about fathering is that you're able to see the potential. Yeah. I mean, you've just seen so much and you listen so well to when the Lord tells you, "Go to this guy who's come to you in the past so full of pride that he pushes himself to a place that he doesn't need to be." And you still have the obedience to listen to what the Lord has to say. And, and I mean, you've, you've been, mm-hmm, without even knowing, yeah, the word father, you were just such a father to me during that time. And, uh, I think one of the greatest stories that I have, if we have time to hear it, was when the first boot camp that I got to do with you, the last one that you did. I rode in the truck with him, yeah, on the way. And on the way, we, we got to a point where, um, he decided to pull over because he wanted to call Donna. And he knew we were about to get out of service, and he wanted to talk to her before we got there. And his conversation with her was so sweet. It was just, "How's your day been? What can I pray for you?" And she was like, "What can I pray for you?" And I thought, "Man, this guy doesn't just tell us to do that. That's exactly, exactly what he is, and that's exactly how he lives." And it just gave me, "I want to be that way. I want, I want to present myself that not only do I, do I tell everybody that that's what they need to do because I know that's what they need to do, but that's because that's the way I am." And you've just been such an example to me. Yeah. And I, I, I can't, I could go deeper, but we'd both be crying, and that would happen. Men can't cry. I'm really sure. It's time to move on. Yeah.

I know I can watch Randy get the feels with this because it's, you know, this is a, it's a, it's a heartfelt concept. I mean, that some guys may be watching this, and they have a hard time even saying the word father, you know? Because you could be listening and having an upbringing, and man, that was just the enemy used that to divide everything you could ever imagine. That's what he's been doing since day one. Has come against the character of God, uh, you know, of a father. We, we've all learned that. But then there could be a guy that's had a great upbringing and a credible dad. You said so yourself, man, my dad was awesome. But being a dad myself with kids, man, I want them to have spiritual fathers and mothers in their life beyond me and Rachel, my wife. Um, so it's, it's a both and. Yeah. But, you know, something that, I can't, you say was, you know, basically modeling. You know, you're, you're modeling. And this is what Paul, we talked about in this podcast. So you guys may listen to get to this. In First Corinthians chapter four, Paul addresses the people as children and says, "You have many teachers, right? But you don't have many fathers." And he goes on to tell them to imitate me, right? Yeah. And so, in other words, "Do as I do. Do what I'm doing." Well, what he was doing was fathering. Empathy is the guy at the end of First Corinthians, in chapter 16, he tells him as he's leaving, "Oh, by the way, when Timothy comes through here, remind him, don't be afraid. He's doing the same thing that I'm doing." In other words, Paul's been fathering Timothy. Timothy's been getting called up exactly how y'all are describing. But also, he's functioning as a father himself, right? Because that's ultimately the endgame is that we're generationally thinking, you know? And so, it is about what God's done in our lives through these relationships, but it's so much not about us. You know, even when Paul's asked somewhere, I'm gonna remember words out in the Bible, you know, "Would you rather die?" He's like, "Well, of course, I'd rather die and go be with my father, but I've got more to do." You know? Exactly. So, just thinking through the lens of that right there, you know, I, when I moved to Abilene in 2015, I'd been saved, I'd been through Freedom, I'd been on a journey with my wife for reconciliation, all that. Um, I had, I had come from being saved, uh, and delivered from demonic and some wild things, stuff that was in me, I didn't even know was real. And, and I was very fertile. But, uh, I was pursuing something, and it took me like a year to find a church home. And it wasn't the church that I found, it was the relationship. I'd been invited here a bunch of times in different places. We're new to town. And, you know, I met Randy, and I just pursued you. I didn't have a reason why, other than I just got to get around men, you know? I'm a former coach, I come up through athletics, huddles, locker rooms. This is just, I'm dying on a vine here if I don't find good men. And I found that, I found you guys in this, and specifically you. But what happened is I went from learning of being saved from XYZ to learning how to live from my identity as a son. Yeah. And that's because you modeled that to me, and you were, I could watch you modeling that to other men. And not just you, because Randy, we can make this about Randy. This isn't about Randy. No. There's a whole slew of men that you represent that are fathers in this, in this body. And, you know, what you guys have done such an incredible job of, and you would say so yourself, accidentally, if you listen to that podcast. Oh, yeah. Okay. We accidentally did this. We've just realized, "Oh, wow, yeah, I'm being pursued this way. What if I intentionally function this way? What might could happen, right? If I actually imitated Paul, right?" So, one, one of my questions to you is, thinking back on your journey, who are one or two of what you would consider spiritual dads for you?

Oh, my, uh, well, certainly, uh, after my, uh, really having an encounter with with the Lord that turned my life completely around, which needed to be turned around big time, uh, there were a number of people that that helped me, of course. And early on, it was, uh, a guy who was, uh, the minister, uh, for me personally, as well as where I went to church for years. His name is Eddie Sharp. And Eddie Sharp was a, he was a great brother that became a father. He probably didn't know that that was happening, and I didn't know that's what, I didn't know how to even call him that. And then, and then frankly, once, once the Lord began to do some really deep things in me, and we, and we came to Beltway, well, then I, I certainly have to say that Ray Templeton, yeah, had to be, uh, the one who, who he did for me, what you guys have said. And that is, he looked at me and said, "Okay, let's go. I need you to help me start Men's Ministry." And it wasn't just start Men's Ministry. He began to follow me, speak to me about some things that that made huge impacts on me. And, and I'll never, ever, uh, forget any of that of what he accomplished in me and called me out of. That I had, not only did I not have any idea if that was true, I resisted. You know, like, "Oh, that's, you know, no, I am absolutely sure, Ray, you have not listened to the Lord." Well, you have not heard. But, uh, but I'm, but I'll be forever grateful, yeah, to those two.

I was thinking about, um, in that, and it's hard not to think about the podcast we recorded, but we started talking about, um, pressures. You've been in this role for years. And while there's three of us sitting here that we could say, "Hey, man, you are my spiritual dad." I even mentioned that in the podcast, man. You know, that's how I feel. So I receive you as a son. But I want everybody to be clear on this. Is we're not saying that Randy's God, or that any man has the ability to do that. No. If anything, it's that, right? The opposite. The world will show you to try to be like God. That was the intention. That's where sin began. Sure. This is about just showing me that it's okay to be vulnerable. It's okay to be weak. It's okay to be real. All the things, you know, that are relationally true, is what the, where the root of this really comes from. And so, you, you have done a great job with that. You guys do a great job of that with men. You know, that was a thing that I saw with Randy first was when we had lunch. We joke about the lunch thing, but his transparency at that lunch and the flaws and the failures of his life made it something that I could relate to. Because then I realized I wasn't the only screw-up walking around. I heard his story and I thought, "Oh, I thought I'll just screw up. I was president of that club." And I love you. I heard his story and I was like, "I'm doing pretty good." But that was the transparency that drew me in. And that was also what he modeled throughout the Men's Ministry. Because guys will sniff out BS, yeah, quickly. And they have enough of that in their life, they don't need more of that. So it's the transparency and the vulnerability that makes that part happen. And that's what drew us in. Yeah.

Which I think about money. I mean, we counterfeit. Oh, yeah. We're men who are listening in. They are, they're not this far along listening to hear some counterfeit deal. No, I'm not. You're not. Not interested in it. I'm to a point in my life where my time's way more valuable than that. Yeah. I have no desire to be sugarcoated any kind of way. And I think that's the relationship a son and a father end up having spiritually. Is, "Listen, I'm gonna, I'm gonna get totally undressed, so to speak, and let you get to know the fullness of me. And I want you to call out my blind spots. I'm hungry for you to rebuke me, correct me." You know, all the things we, we hear in the Bible that are that are true, they're truths. But, but without relationship, rebuking and correcting can be judging. It can seem very religious. And so we're not talking about religion, we're talking about relationships. Amen. And that's the culture that I think has happened here in our Men's Ministry. And in fact, I had a friend come in last year here. These guys have mentioned boot camp. He came, and he's from another church. Y'all know, talking about Cody. And of all the teaching, of all the things, and it was incredible breakthroughs, the Lord doing things. It's like, "Man, the most incredible thing that I see here," these were his words, "is the camaraderie that's here." And that doesn't mean that like, there's, I'm not talking about perfect, right? Like, there's just, there's all sorts of layers to all this stuff. But you can't get that without time, trust, building relationship. And so, appreciate you putting time in because I know that's not an easy task.

Well, uh, yeah, thanks all for your goodness. I don't, I'm glad that part's over. But, but, um, here's the thing though, is that with me, with in there, all the years of when the Lord was really, he was my heavenly father, is the best spiritual father, obviously, of all of them. And he, he was willing to father me. And I, and I knew he had to father me. And it, that's, that's a whole another, that's a whole another story how that happened. But at the same time, when, when Ray began into, and I began to think about, "What in the world are we going to do with Men's Ministry?" Literally, this is no doubt about it. Of all the amazingly wonderful, important, good, uh, just changing the, the part of my life and with so many other men, is when I remember for me, when I, it just like I caught this idea of sonship. I hadn't, yeah, I'd read it and, you know, in the scripture, of course. But when I thought of the adjectives we might use that, that, you know, as to who we are and who we become, we become born-again followers of Jesus. Yeah. You know, sonship's one of those names. But it was probably enough about number 11 in my list of all the ones I would think of first. And which means I never thought of, thought of it really, because I didn't see me as a, as a, as a good son to something I wanted to be. But I did not see me as a son, you know, at any present time. I, you know, disciple, new creation, servant, you know, leader, leader, recall saints, even. I didn't like that one either because I knew I wasn't the same teacher. Yeah. Yeah. All those things. But, but when, when son landed in my heart, everything changed. Yeah. I mean, like, literally, it was like, "Oh my goodness." And from then on, and even, and it has not stopped. I mean, yeah, a year or two ago, things took a, a real, just an escalation of how fast this was going. When I think a number of us realized, "Oh, no, sonship is not just important, it is really the foundational, yeah, foundational piece where everything, all the other adjectives come out of it. It comes out of sonship." Because when sonship is what really is the big piece of driving who you are, then the other things way more easily fall into place. And, and it's not striving, it's not performance, as we tend to do when we want to be a good leader, want to be a better this or a better certain, whatever. When sonship is there, and you know that sonship, a Son of God is something he bestowed, he on me and all of us, we've been adopted as sons. When that becomes for it, yeah, it goes from, "Oh my goodness," and everything else begins to fall into place in a different way. Does that make sense? Yes.

It's so, it's the order. I mean, Jesus came here as a man and established the idea of family. Yeah. Presented God as father, right? And so now we're adopted into that. Oh my goodness. And we talked about that on the podcast. So even we've referenced the podcast a few times. If you're watching this, you don't know what we're talking about, go back, listen to the podcast. It'll give you a real foundational teaching. Because what, what I'm hearing everybody say, and I want to just kind of see what you think, is in other words, what Randy just said is, you had a revelation of the Kingdom. Absolutely. That's what that's what this is. Is a family of God, a revelation of the Kingdom. This is the ruling reign of Heaven. Jesus is the ruling reign of my life. I literally am a part of this family. I'm stepping into the full functioning of who all God is. I mean, 100%. And with that Kingdom, there is transformation that happens all throughout people's lives. They're living to the fullness of who they are in their house, their temple, their body. So, just, what I can see your brains just smoke. Chuck's smoking. He's smoking over here. I think that for me, it's, uh, yeah, when we, when we started meeting and, and just the, the opportunity to be invited in with all of these fathers, um, man, it's just a picture of this big table. And all of a sudden, somebody says, "Hey, come over here and sit with this group." And for me, it was a place of, "You want me to come sit over there? Why would you want me to come sit over there?" And, and I've, I feel like that that God, even this morning, in our conversation this morning, there's, there's places now that, uh, that it's so important to remember that you have to learn how to be a good son before you can ever be a father. Because, absolutely. When, when I live in that doubt of, "Why am I invited to this table? Why?" What that does is it takes me out of the understanding that He has adopted me in as His son. Yeah. And, and just like when Paul's challenging them to live, follow his example, you know, in, in being able to look at guys. I told Rodney this morning that, um, it's been really weird a couple of times the last few weeks. I've been talking to a guy, and he just has this look. He's just looking at me like, "Wow." And I'm just going, "It's, this is just me." And, but, but in that, after that conversation this morning, it, I thought, "You know, the Lord showed me that that's what sonship is. If you understand who you are, then you can tell the world who I am." Exactly. And, and I think that that's, you know, for me, it's just the, the whole word believe that we're talking about now. And, and, you know, Randy also pulled me and my wife, Shelly, in to Re-Engage. And so, and I've been a great part of Man Academy. I've loved that as well. Um, but in a few minutes of talking to me, if you're a man, if you're a woman, or whoever, I'm going to talk about Man Academy, boot camp, and Re-Engage. And I, I tell people it's because I believe in the things that the Lord uses and He used to change my life. Sure. And, and, you know, that's just another area of of fathering is that you, you pushed me into things that, because it was that same conversation that day, by the way, "I think you and your wife would also be great Re-Engage leaders." And, yeah, it was, it was, yeah, full packed lunch, all this stuff. It's like, go ahead. I'm sorry. Go ahead.

Well, I was just thinking when you said Man Academy, some people like Kink. Um, as you're watching this, if you are here in Beltway, um, Kingdom Men is something that we will launch in the fall for guys to to get around small groups. So like, I'm just sitting here thinking as we're coming, um, to end of a conversation, um, you know, what's my next step? How do I really plug into this? And, and there's, there's two different ways this happens. And then I want you to kind of talk a little bit about this because it, I think it's important for guys to hear from you, especially, um, sometimes a dad will identify sons, but most of the time, it's sons who are seeking dads. And really, that's that's where we're wanting men to go. Because I mean, if you just think about the kingdom, seek first the kingdom of God. Okay? I, as a man, have been wired to be a seeker. As in fact, matter of fact, no one had to even teach. Most time, you don't teach kids how to play hide and go seek. They just do it. They just start doing it. You know? Like, so we're wired this way. You can't be a man or woman that sits around waiting to be sought after. Become a seeker. And I'm telling you, there are plenty of people out there starving to want to help and pour out into people. And, and in fact, all that really does is put you in the right vein to seek after the kingdom and the Father to the fullest. Does that make sense? Yes. Like, and I think that's, that's really the boat transition in our men's Ministries is, you know, it's not an any longer father's hunting sons, so to speak, but sons hunting dads. Actually, was a word that was spoken in the very first meeting that we all had when the, when the realization of fathering hit in that vein. Someone sought after you, and it didn't pan out. Sure. It didn't always work. Sure.

Speak into that. Well, uh, yeah, there's no doubt that that how all this works and who really gets connected to who and when and what, what does it look like and all that. It's, it's its own, it's its own, uh, life, I guess you might say. But, but I do know that, uh, still the thing that I think is so interesting to me is we perform. Those of us who, who have become a spiritual father to however many men that may be, at whatever age we may be, it doesn't occur because really me or someone else realizes that this is, "Oh, this is going to be a spiritual father, the spiritual son." That's not, does not work that way. It's a hardship. Let's see if God's in this, right? Yeah. And, and it, and what happens is, there is, this is why it makes it's so wonderful to know that there's nothing but certain sonship that we earn. Yeah. It is, it is about realizing that we don't earn it. And, and I get to surrender my life fully led by Holy Spirit to my heavenly father and his family in the kingdom of God. And when we begin to, even with all the flaws that we, we have, and we're trying to walk that way, when we begin to do that, I think Holy Spirit then just comes in and he, he kind of does what he does and connects people. Conversations happen. More conversations happen. And without question, we all of us here, we want to create an atmosphere here where where that connecting, yeah, process becomes more, uh, prayed into, where we're, you know, in all, all facets of this. Oh, yeah. But, but it is a, it is, it's messy. It's, it's, you know, sometimes people get disappointed. Yeah. I mean, I really thought I was going to have a great relationship with, you know, you know, a couple, three other guys that, that, uh, I might be able to be of, be a somewhat of a spiritual father to, and it really didn't happen. Right. And, and sometimes because they just went completely away, yeah, from everything, or because they've, they found another, which is awesome. Absolutely. Which is, I mean, you guys have been followed by Dennis Greer. Oh, yeah. Equally. Absolutely. You know? And it's like, like we're saying, you're a representation of, I didn't mean to cut you off. No, no, keep going. That's, uh, no, that's good. It's such a big deal. Like, we're not, this isn't Jesus came and he multiplied, right? You know what I mean? And so it's not like work. You can go be the, you know, Dad that everyone on Earth. It's impossible. I think too, though, whenever in this room, when we get to talking about how did you and I become friends? How did I meet this guy? You know, it's, it's so natural that you don't even know it. I mean, it wasn't, you know, people laugh and say, "Oh, you fish." We just became best friends. Well, yeah, it's not, it's not like that. Yeah. I think the, the thing about it is for me, it was, um, it was showing up, knowing that the Lord had said, "You are more than just a good man. Yeah. Go find what that means." And so, you know, I would encourage guys to to show up. Not, you know, we, we can set, like you've said, get around the fire. We can put a group of spiritual fathers and try to connect that, and it might work out. But it most of the time, it's going to work out so naturally that you don't even know it. You look back and you go, "When did you become my father?" Yeah. And I can't put a date. We don't know. "When did you become my very best friend?" I don't know that because it's so natural. Um, so don't, I, I would just say, don't pressure that situation. But at the same time, is God in it? If that's what they want, then they'll show up pursuing. Yeah. Don't, and don't get discouraged if it doesn't work out the first time. Keep coming back. Yes. Yeah. Because seeking, you just continue to seek. You didn't find the person in the game. Doesn't mean you quit and throw a fit. Like, you just continue to go. Exactly.

Here's what y'all aren't going to believe. We've got about 30 seconds. Time flies, of course, we do. This is great. This is a part of a series where guys can can stay plugged in. And I have a feeling this will be something we can continue to do. But just different. You got three seconds to answer this question as fast as you can. What are you reading right now? All three of you. Go.

Outwitting the Devil.

Scripture.

Scripture. Yeah.

I think for me, it's the same thing.

What are you watching right now? You get three seconds. Go.

Suits.

Netflix.

I'm watching Quarterbacks. Got a little language, but man, it's good.

All right. Last question. What's the last place you took your wife on a date to go?

Cyber Street.

Go. Oh, good.

Oh, you're out.

Dominican Republic.

Dominican. Oh, yeah. I'm talking about setting the bar. Actually, we went to Granbury. That's true. I'm kidding. Reese takes Donna. I think we got a good plug. I do want to say one last thing. Hey, Randy's, uh, you know, reign. These guys are all, these guys are business owners, but that's not who they are. It's what they do. I work here. Randy's actually in ministry, doing things all over, really, the world, but plugging in with other churches, helping men's ministries get foundations going. And so, if you have any questions or want to reach out to know more about how to connect to him, then I say, "Let's help you get connected." So, yeah. Thank y'all. Love you guys. Love you. Thanks much.
