Hi and welcome to Crafty Fox Studios. I'm so happy that you're here. I am excited that you have decided to join me and I want to thank all of my subs. Um, thank you, thank you, thank you. I appreciate you.
I just want to be full disclosure, I'm probably only two or three steps ahead of you in the sewing game. I am learning. And another full disclosure, I'm left-handed. Now, here's the caveat. I'm left-handed with some things, like I write with my left hand. I do a lot of things with my left hand, but honestly, I do things with my right hand as well. So, honestly, what I am is a confused person. I'm confused and I have a little bit of dyslexia. So, sewing has been a little bit of a struggle for me. You know, when I'm not on camera, I'm trying to learn something new so I can bring it to you.
So, I want to show you now. I know I showed you this um a while back. I haven't sewn the button on it yet, but this opens up and it's got sandwich bags. Now, these are the Ziplo. Somebody previously had mentioned that when I did this, it would be good to do the Ziploc bags and they're absolutely right. But that project I was doing with a Dollar Tree pot holder. Now, this pot holder came from Hobby Lobby. So, let me show you the difference in size. Okay, so there's the difference in size. This is the Dollar Tree. This is the Hobby Lobby. It's a lot bigger. Okay.
So, when I was looking for bags to use with the Dollar Tree pot holder, these Ziploc bags here did not fit in here. As you can see, they stick out around the bag. So, I had to find something that fit. And the ones that fit the Dollar Tree did not come in Ziplo that I could find. Now, maybe you can find them. I don't know. I couldn't find them. So, I decided to make this one and I put the Ziploc bags in it.
Now, how I did this was I folded this pot holder in half before I put anything in here. Folded it in half and I found the center. And when I found the center, I used this it it's a fabric marker. It wipes down with wet cloth. It comes right off. It looks blue. I found the center. I marked it. Then I went and I got my bags. And these bags are very slippery. Okay. So, I positioned them in the way in which I wanted them. This is bias tape. And I positioned the bias tape and then I clipped it with these clips that I got from the Dollar Tree. I clipped it so that it wouldn't move. And then I sewed it down. Okay.
Now, once I did that, these this is the tops of the bags. The bottoms of the bags were hanging out on the other side. So, I just took a pair of scissors and I cut the bottoms off of both sides. And this is what we've got. Okay. So, I love this. I'm going to be selling this at craft fairs. Uh I have to put a button on it yet. I have to go out and do a little button shopping. I want to find the right buttons for these. Okay.
So, then the next thing that I made was this cow. um makeup bag I guess you would call it. It is about on the bottom. Okay. It's got box corners or box bottom. Okay. If you can see that I put a zipper in it. Yes. And a zipper tab. Okay. So, I've been learning all of that. This is what the inside of the bag looks like. I did not put a liner in it. I thought zipper tab and the zipper and the box bottom was enough new things at once. So, we left it at that. This zipper pull that I added is something that I made and I just added it. I don't know if it'll stay there. Not sure. But anyway, this bag is, if I measured it, the top opening is 13. Across here is 13. And then the bottom is eight. Okay.
So, we're going to go ahead and we're going to make one of these today. I'm going to show you as best I can how to box these bottoms and how to put in a zipper and a zipper um tab right here. This thing here. Okay. So, I hope you'll stick with me. To the person who left the comment about holding the thread, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate that sincerely. Any tips that anybody has are welcome anytime. Okay. Um, constructive criticism is always welcome here. I am learning. Again, I'm probably only a couple of steps ahead of some of you. Then others of you maybe maybe have sewn for years and you're just looking for ideas. I don't know. Um, but anyway, we're going to get into this.
Okay, guys. We're going to start with a Dollar Tree dish drying mat. I picked red today. Um, let me see. I did this one. I just didn't put a zipper in it. This is one, but I did I put a liner in it. I think I showed you this before. And I did I did box the bottom. It's got thread on it. Anyhow, what I'm keeping in here is my punch for snaps, but we're going to use this. Now, the Dollar Tree I'm going to I'm going to cut this little tag off. must have caught on to us using their mats for sewing because they've gone up from $1.25 to $1.50. All right, so you're going to fold this in half. You're going to go ahead and clip the top. Make it as even as you can. You're going to clip the top. Okay, I've got three of them here. And you're going to flatten it out. Flatten it out. And you're going to find the center. And once you do that, I'm going to ask you to cut. You're going to cut this.
I hope everybody's doing well. Um, this weather gets to me. Honestly, it's um cloudy. I looked at the weather this morning. It said it was supposed to be sunny here, but somebody lied. Okay. So, in order to box the bottoms, I'm going to cut out about a 2 in square. 2 in by 2 in out of each corner. Okay. On both pieces. I'm going to take this over to my table. Let me take you with I'm going to take this off cuz I'm going to do this. This is kind of thick. So, I'm going 2 in by 2 in. Let me see here. Go. That was kind of hard to see by 2 in. Okay. So, I'm going to do that. I'm going to cut these out with scissors, too. So, all right. 2 in by 2 in. And then we're going over here. We're going to do the same thing. Okay, we're going to do the same thing here. We're going to do the same thing with this. Okay, guys. So, I have cut two by two pieces out of both pieces. All right, we're going back over to the other table.
Now, we have to find a zipper that we like. Let me see. Um, do I want a red zipper? I have a red zipper. Do we want it to stand out? I've got a green zipper. Let's see here. Red, green. Um, I have a black zipper. Black. Uh, I have Is that color green? I think I may have Oh, I have a white zipper. I have a white zipper. So, what do we want to do? How do we want this to look? Do we want red, green, or white? H. Well, I'm not going to go with green. I think I'm going to go with white. I think I'm going to go with white. Okay.
So, now these zippers came from Walmart. You can buy Zipper by the yard. Zippers by the yard. It is on Amazon and I have quite a bit. They come with zipper pulls, all colors, and I have a lot of colors here, but I haven't broken into them yet because I'm just learning zippers. So, we're going to take this zipper out of its package. This is a 9 in zipper. So, see what happens here. Okay, now we have a 9 in zipper. Now, for a zipper pull, you want to cut a piece of fabric. It how wide the zipper pull is going to be is determined by how wide this is. Um, yeah, I've only done this one other time. So, here we are. Let's get on this.
Okay, so I decided on this fabric. This is the one with the crayons on it. And I cut it 2 and 1/2 by 1 and 1/2. Okay. So, what we're going to do is we are going to just fold this over just a little bit. And I'm going to press it down with my fingers. And then I'm going to see if my zipper will fit in there. If it doesn't, we want to make it just a little bit wider. Okay. Okay. So, there the zipper fits in it. Now, what we're going to do is we're going to go over to the sewing machine and we're going to sew this down. Okay.
So, I went over to the sewing machine and I sewed this down. So, now what we're going to do is we're going to fold it pretty side to pretty side. Okay. And when we do that, we are going to just sew down there. So, let me do that real quick. I'm holding the thread. Oh, not so fast there, darling. Sometimes I have a lead foot. Okay. All right. Going to pull that out. We're going to trim off any of the any of the strings. Okay. So, what we have here now is something like that. We're going to take the back side of your zipper and we're going to Okay. See this end that you this. Okay. You're going to feed the zipper back side to you along with the seam that you see there. You see the seam? It's going to go in here and you're going to take it all the way to the end. All right. And going to flatten it out because once that zipper's in there nicely, see that? You're going to sew a seam across there. Okay. So, let's do that real quick. Back stitch. Always remember to back stitch. Um, it sets the sets the stitch. You don't have to worry about it coming out unless you have to take it out with a seam ripper, which I've had to do. Okay.
So, now this is what you've got. So, you're going to pull this gently right side out. And now you have a zipper tab. Okay. Once that's pulled out, you can sew right across the top of there to seal it off. Perfect. Okay. So, that's what I'm going to do real quick. And there is a seam there. So, you can sew on top of that seam so that you don't have two stitches or two seams. All right. Okay. And now we have a tab. Okay. Got to cut off all the excess string. That's what we've got. Okay.
So, now you're going to come over here. Now, to be quite honest with you, either side is fine. So, there's not a right side or a wrong side with these. So, you're going to Let's move this down here so you can see. You're going to take the zipper and you're going to put it face down. You're going to line it up. You're going to line it up. And yes, it is a little shorter on each end, but you're going to line it up there. I'm going to use my Again, this is trial and error. This is me learning along with you. But we got this zipper in here. All right. And then what we're going to do is we're going to sew right along there. Okay. Now, um, when you get to the end here, your zipper may be in the way. So, if it is, you'll just have to open it up so that it's not in the way. Okay. So, let me go sew this. So, I'm sewing along this here. This I shouldn't say seam. It's not the seam. I'm sewing the zipper to the pouch. Now, this zipper part is getting in my way, so I moved it out of the way. Continue on. You try to keep this as straight as you can. Um I said beginning seist um like myself easier said than done. Let's pull this out and see what we've got. See how badly I messed up or didn't mess up. Okay. All right. So, we've sewn the zipper on the one side. Okay.
So, now we're going to sew the zipper on the other side. All right. So, this is the fun part. I'm going to unzip it. Okay. And then I'm going to this time I think I'm going to use some pins to hold this down for the simple fact that those clips are really kind of um bulky. So what if you can see what I'm doing here um I am sewing this and well you can you can well first what I would suggest is that you go ahead and pin it down pin it down before you do anything before you do anything at all. All right, pin it down. So, we got this. We're going to pin this down. Again, guys, thank you for being here. You have no idea how I appreciate you and how you make my day, especially with your comments and your suggestions. I appreciate you. Okay, so we've pinned it down. We're going to flip it over. So, this is what it's going Excuse me. This is what it's going to look like. So, I know that I've pinned it on the wrong side. So, I have to undo it. That's one way before you sew to check your check your work. Wow. There's my brain again. My left brain and my dyslexia, I guess. So, this is going to get let's see. So, this is the front the top. And we want this sewn in to here. So you want it like this, right? Okay. Let's double check that. No, that is wrong. Okay, guys. I had a terrible brain fart, but I have it figured out now. Okay, so I've got this pinned in here like this. And now we're going to sew it. Okay, let me just make sure that make sure that I have everything as even as I can possibly make it. I apologize. Give me some grace here. I'm learning with you. I'm learning with you. Okay. So, if I sew it down that seam and I close it up, this is what I'll have. A nice zipper. Okay.
Okay, guys. So, I think I messed up. Not with the zipper so much. Maybe a little bit. It's off. But see here, I made this tab. I should have made another tab that went down here and fit onto this end as well. So, there was a tab on each end. I'll do that the next time. But you saw how I made that. You would make this one exactly the way you made that one. Fit it on here and then sew it. Okay.
So, now what we're going to do is make sure that this is inside out. We're going to sew down this side. We're not sewing here. We're sewing down this side. And then we're sewing down this side. And then I'll show you how we are going to use these box corners to make a bag that stands up. Okay. I'm going to go ahead and clip it. So, it's a phone call from my husband. Anyhow, we're going to go ahead and we're going to clip this. We're going to finish this up. This video is getting too long. Um, and like I said, please go easy on me. I am a novice, but two tabs would have been great. I think I'll do another video using two tabs. But let's sew this up. I'll be >> Okay, guys. One quick thing before you sew your bag up, make sure you open your zipper because if you don't, you could have a problem. Um, so remember to open up that zipper. Okay.
So, we've sewed the sides and the bottom. That leaves us with these openings here. So, what you're going to do is you're going to open this up and sew these together just like that. Okay. So, let's see here. You may want to clip them again. I I find these clips. Sorry. Find these clips get in the way somewhat. Let's see. All right, I'm going to grab my thread here and we're going to go ahead and we're going to sew right across there with about a quarter to half inch seam allowance depending on what you want to use. I mean, it's up to you. This is your world. It's my world. We can do what we want, can't we? All right. Now, this little seam here is kind of a pain for my sewing machine. It does not like it. Take that out. Cut the strings. Okay, we're going to do the same to the other side. And I'll meet you guys. This wasn't a perfect video, but we are not perfect. This is inside out. It's what it looks like. Okay.
Now, we're going to turn it right side out. Let's see what it looks like that way. All right. Again, I did make a mistake with the zipper, but this is only the second time that I've done this, so I call it a win for only being the second time that I've done it. Okay. So, and there we have it again. Let's see. Push these ends out. And it um hold on, let me show you. It'll sit. It just sits. Um and it zips up. And again, if I had done the same thing on this end, we wouldn't have this gap. But you live and you learn. And the next bag I do, I will do it on both ends. Here we have it.
